Best mussels in DC
If you love neighborhood gems, mussels and beer, put this restaurant on the top of your list. We had salads, the lobster bisque and a variety of broths; everything was fantastic. We cannot wait to return.

Sur La Place...truly wonderful!
It was my second visit to Sur La Place. I had made reservations for 5PM on June 30th 2013. I was seated promptly and not long after, starting enjoying my first Delirium Tremens as part of dinner. The appetizer (baked mussels with parmesan cheese) was very nice. As for the main course, which was seafood bouillabaise (1/2 lobster, as well as scallops, mussels, shrimp) in a tomato/fennel broth, was wickedly tasty! The staff was very attentive and friendly. My visit to Sur La Place made for a very enjoyable Sunday night dinner. I enthusiastically recommend Sur La Place! Cheers!!

Very Good but no air conditioner
My wife and I went there for the first time. The baguette was perfect with a nice hard crust and soft dough inside. The mussels were perfect (I had the Jamaican and she had the Popeye?). Neither of us could finish the kilo and we couldn't take them home as the next day was a diet day. The service would have been very good except our server didn't tell us the air conditioner wasn't working. They had a fan on in the back but it didn't help us. When I mentioned this to her, she offered us a free drink which was nice but they need to tell customer's what the situation is up front (I feel we weren't told because they were afraid we might leave but that is still no excuse). We will be back though.

Never Let Down at Sur La Place
We've been dining at Sur La Place for years and it never ceases to disappoint us. It feels like we have walked into a family's home every time; Tula, especially, always takes great care of us. The food is delicious and reminds us of our days living in Belgium (more than any other Belgian restaurant in the Washington Metro area). A nice ambience, friendly staff, no egos, just an all around great place and an absolutely delicious menu.

A great Belgium experience
The moules and the belgian beer were treats in themselves. But the food (steak frite, poisson) were exceptional. Service was friendly and efficient.

Great Food and Service
I enjoyed my meal and dessert. The wine was nice, and the Belgian beer list is amazing! The service was great, too! Khea is a great server.

Great Belgian find!
The mussels were out of this world with generous portions!

Easy, Comfortable, and Tasty
This is a small, friendly, inviting bistro. The variety of mussels offerings is impressive, and they all sound good. A friend and I split the Dijonnaise style bucket, and both of us were fully satisfied, what with the pommes frites and baguettes we used to soak up the outstanding broth at the bottom of the bucket. The prosecco was delicious. The moderate noise level and unhurried atmosphere were conducive to lingering in good conversation among friends. The service was friendly and attentive. It was hard on my commitment to a vegetarian diet, however. We have been there 3 times now, and will keep it on our list as a great place to dine with friends, or have a drink at the bar.

A small place worth knowing
A small and quiet place.
Excellent menu of Belgian beers. Good wine list, many by the glass.
Specializes in mussels and other Belgian cuisine (steak frite, etc.)
I've always had excellent service, good beer/wine/food recommendations from servers.
The kitchen has also taken my suggestions to heart, reducing the number of onions in the avocado cocktail, for example.
I go with my wife when we want to have a good meal with nice wine and also hear each other and have a quiet talk.
Some nights it is full and you'll need a reservation, others it isn't and you won't. I can't tell why, so I reserve.

Mussels, Brussels & Chocolate- yum!
We went because they advertised mussels and found the Brussels sprouts and chocolate as well. We will return for more of everything.

Mussels and fish
Excellent....service remains very average and not particularly attentive. They seem to have turnover of wait staff

Belgian mussels in NW DC-Palisades
Very good steamed mussels, large salads as prelude [suggest splitting between 2 diners]. Attentive if sometimes stretched service. Kitchen can be a little slow. Pleasant dining room.

Mussels and frites were excellent.
Mussels and frites were excellent. The broth (provencale) was delicious.

My fiancée and I came to Sur La Place for her birthday and were very impressed. We were greeted by the manager (perhaps owner) and seated in a quiet private corner of the restaurant near the front window. The restaurant was dominated by rich browns and reds leading a warm earthly feel to the establishment. Smells of fresh herbs, wine and stock wafted through the restaurant. Service was courteous, attentive and friendly. We were pleasantly surprised by the extent of the beer and wine menu, all of which appeared well selected. The food simply put, was incredible, the lobster bisque being the best we have ever had while the mussels were well prepared with a rich savory broth.
We will certainly return.
8/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
I cannot wait to try each item on the menu. The "Popeye" mussels were amazing. I also suggest the Brussel sprout appetizer which was full of flavor. I could have both of these dishes every night!
8/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
I took my nephew, his wife, and their 18 month old son- they were great with him- brought him a high chair and a box of crayons
It did get a bit warm, though!
8/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
Their 1 kilo of mussels is plenty for two with almost a page of preparation choices. Another page of Belgium beers. Delicious!
Free parking on side street after 6:30 pm and 2 hour meters before then which take coins or Parkmobile app.

The potatoe and leek soup
The potatoe and leek soup was delicious, as well as the salmon! we have never been disappointed in our many visits.
8/30/2013 5:00:00 PM
This was a nice little restaurant. Definitely get the mussels. I got the steak frite, which wasn't really anything special, but my husband ordered the mussels and they were outstanding. The beer list is also very substantial, with really delicious Belgian beers. My favorite part about this restaurant was how relaxing and low key it was. The service was great, and it's the kind of place you can stay all night and not feel rushed out of.

Great mussels available in
Great mussels available in a variety of preparations, served with tasty pommes frites. Enormous selection of beer
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
The food here is lovely and we have always had excellent service. There is also a terrific beer list, although we prefer wine with dinner. The only drawback is the noise level.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
We at a Sur la Place Saturday night and found, to our delight, that Sur la Place has improved substantially since previous owners. The charming European atmosphere still can't be beat, but the food and service have improved greatly. My grilled pork chops were succulent and out of this world. My husband loved the mussels. We'd like to see the menu expanded a bit, but otherwise had no complaint.
9/7/2013 12:00:00 AM
Wonderful Neighborhood Gem
We always enjoy dining at Sur La Place. The Avocado Cocktail is amazing as are the Bruxelles Mussels. The mussels arrived before we were done with the salad, but our thoughtful waitress made everything all right. Thank you, Sur La Place!

A little visit to Europe
Like a pleasant bistro in Europe, Sur la Place offers food skillfully prepared and tastefully presented. I'm hooked on the grilled duck pâté appetizer. Mussels are excellent. The beer is fantastic. Always feel refreshed and well-fed after a visit there.

Mussels Better than in Belgium!
Service is great and the staff are just lovely. The place has lots of character and is a bit eclectic, but all in a good way. The food is wonderful, especially the Mussels, of which there are too many to list, but probably our two favorites are the Bruxelle and the Popeye - absolutely delicious! We love the Mussels dishes so much that we tend to only order the mussels... The salads are really good and the salmon/asparagus starter is outstanding! We love this place and are there every month or two...
9/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
I go for the mussels
I would really like to try other dishes besides the pots of mussels, but I just can't not order them. This restaurant has a better atmosphere than its sister restaurant Mannequin Pis in Olney, MD. Same food though. Looking forward to going back!
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
One of our new favorites
Sur La Place is a friendly, neighborhood gourmet place such as one might find in a French town. Food is interesting and well prepared and portions are more generous than some. Our server was attentive, friendly and efficient. And, there were plenty of chocolate options on the dessert menu.

A Neighborhood Gen
We highly recommend this restaurant. It was quiet, the food was great and the servers were very attentive. We'll be back soon!

Good mussels and GREAT beer list. We're there often and there's always attentive service.

A welcomed surprise
I was expecting decent food and ambiance and was pleasantly surprised with the results instead. Being my first time, I ordered a ceviche as a starter. The serving was a bit spicier than I'm used to, but not too extreme. Lots of fish/calamari as promised. For the main course, I went with a pot of mussels in tarragon sauce. The taste was delicious and the texture/aromas were right on the mark. I was surprised by its size; definitely an item to share between 2-3 friends at least. Service was excellent and prompt. I will certainly recommend this restaurant to friends--can't wait to return myself and try other mussel options, perhaps the Dijonaise, Bruxelles, Bebert or Green Peppercorn alternatives (alas, no ceviche next time).
10/15/2013 12:00:00 AM
We all chose beef dishes and will be back for more next time and also to try new dishes.
10/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
I thought the food was delicious. The lobster bisque had generous chunks of lobster and properly creamy. On the waiters recommendation I ordered the roasted Cornish hen and she was right on the money. The skin was nice and crisp and the inside was moist and tasty. All my dining companions had the mussels and enjoyed them. Great selection of Belgian beers. The Bread pudding desert was easily enough for two and very good.

Best-kept secret in Palisades
This restaurant is a gem! We've been there for numerous special occasions and some not-so-special.
Soups are fresh, rich and excellent -- Potato leak and lobster bisque are outstanding. Salads are fresh with many to choose from. They have an excellent array of imported beers and wines (once you have Belgian, you won't drink American brews again!)
The 1 kilo of mussels is served in a huge choice of styles -- we are working are way through the list.
Save room for dessert. The pot au chocolate is rich and velvety.
Service is European-style -- leisurely, with no glitz. They are very flexible if you want things made a particular way.
I wonder why they don't serve Waterzooi on the menu -- if they did, I know it would be divine!

The beer and mussels were good as usual, as was the soup.
But the service was very slow for some reason and the place was not full.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
So much ambience and delicious food! Salmon, perfectly prepared, and pork chops, tender and yummy. Good and friendly service.
10/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
The mussels were fantastic and there were so many preparations to choose from. The server was honest in telling us one mussels dish with appetizers would be enough for the two of us. The bread pudding was wonderful, especially the vanilla and caramel sauce accompaniment.
10/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Sur La Place does mussels right!
We enjoyed a lovely, quiet evening mid-week in celebration of my wife's birthday over a delicious liter of "Pop-Eye" mussels with an artful side of brussels sprouts sauteed with leeks, onions & bacon . . . mmmmmmm . . . and the trademark pomme frites! The Belgians definitely do mussels beautifully!
10/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
A taste of Belgium
Sur La Place has a very European feel. The atmosphere is like a local Belgian bar with Moules et frites and a wonderful array of trappist and abbey beers (with unique glasses or goblets for many). It expands the menu with a variety of wonderful dishes such as escargot and grilled pate appetizers, and very tasty bread pudding. Overall, a very pleasant evening out.

Stepping into the Old World
Walking into Sur La Place was like entering a sweet neighborhood in Belgium! Full house, bustling, with delightful, old world ambiance. The beer list is extensive -- pricey but so it goes! I enjoyed the seafood bouillabaisse and my husband enjoyed the Flemish stew. The service is excellent. Eating here is an event - - go to relax, to be well served and fed, and to enjoy a long evening with a friend or loved one.

Comfort Food Done Well
Sur La Place is one of my favorite restaurants because it serves delicious Belgian comfort food along with it's extensive menu of steamed mussels. The Flemish/French dishes are authentic and I've never had a bad dish. Nice unpretentious atmosphere.
11/12/2013 4:00:00 PM
This restaurant has delicious food, a welcoming ambiance and tranquility. We enjoyed our soups and our entrées. We had no room for dessert. Coffee was terrific. What more could anyone want in a dining experience??!!!!!

Perfect dining spot
Following a shopping trip to Macarthur Beverages, Sur La Place was a convenient stop on the way home. Good choice. The atmosphere is warm and cozy, the staff friendly and efficient, but not rushed. The wine list was well chosen and very reasonable, but it was the food which will have us returning. My wife ordered fish and I had boulubaisse. All the seafood was fresh and delicious and the sauces were excellent. When we return we will have to try the mussel pots. They looked really good. All in all an great neighborhood dining spot.

Good food, pleasant and quiet
Good food, pleasant and quiet atmosphere, very welcoming staff. All in all, a very pleasant experience.
11/25/2013 4:00:00 PM
This restaurant reminded me of the little bistro's along the Grand Place in Brussels complete with the Mannequin Pis decked out in his sants hat! The pot of mussels were delicious and the variety quite rare. The lavender and ginger was to die for and a great side of pommes frites made it just like the real thing out of Belgium. Touche' sur la Place!
