Delicious tapas style food, good for sharing a bunch of little things. Everything on the menu was delicious! It had a very nice ambiance and is very quaint. Took my mother there for Mother's Day and she loved it! Definitely going back.

Basque country tapas style in Soho
This is a cute little French Basque Country restaurant hidden away on Thompson Street (between Prince and Spring) in Soho.
The decor and ambience is very European and stylish but cozy. Great for an intimate date night or to have a relaxing evening with friends. The food comes in small tapas-style plates. It is more like a tasting menu as opposed to entries. The braised beef dish was deliciously flavored and moist. The chicken potatoes dish was a little too creamy and rich without much flavor, thus my least favorite. The menu selection is not large so view the menu online before deciding whether to go.

All about the service
I enjoyed dinner/late night food more than Sunday brunch. Fantastic wine,
incredibly nice, attentive staff.

Everything from the owner welcoming us with his natural French charm, to the service, the presentation of the plates and the quality of the food, was outstanding. We are French and appriciate authentic French dishes well prepared. The concept of small plates is fantastic, it creates "une ambiance conviviale" and allows everyone to taste different things. I look forward to returning and having a great time again!

Great relatively new place in Soho
Looking for a new place near where we live, and wanting availability on Sat at 8:30 (done on Sat at noon!), found this place on OT. Based on excellent reviews, we tried. Glad we did. Really nice space (former Cuban resto) with good noise level (one could converse). Southern French/French basque. Soups were really quite nice, and 3 small plates (stuff mushrooms, sauteed potatoes and assorted peppers) were excellent, as was the chocolate tartine for dessert. Only slight disappointment was the braised lamb (okay but not memorable). After a new place we all say whether will keep on our list. Three very positive yesses. I only hope they stay busy enough to stay in business but not busy that I cannot get a reservation for Sat. at a popular time.

lots of potential
for a restaurant that is only a few months old, it was fantastic! very impressive. loved the food and atmosphere. glad we found this place on Yelp :) will definitely be recommending Cocotte to friends!

My daughter and I went to Cocotte for lunch and found it a lovely dining experience. The lunch menu has a very interesting array of French/Basque cuisine, perfect for someone looking for a light but satisfying lunch. The service was friendly and informative, and the atmosphere is charming. Even though you walk down a short flight to enter, it feels bright and cozy, not dark and gloomy. My favorite food was the "al dente" carrot dish (thinly sliced and briefly sauteed in cumin oil), but everything was good, and there was a very nice selection of wines by the glass. My daughter's poulet en cocotte was perhaps a little bland for my taste, but she (who doesn't like spicy food) thought it was delicious. We will definitely be back.

Great new small resto
Our second time there. Everything first rate except the menu is a bit small and had not changed. But a wonderful evening with scrumptious small plates, lovely service, nice noise level and overall really nice ambiance.

Great Food and Location!
Looked romantic from outside. Went in at 7pm during a weekday and we got seated right away.
Dishes are small sized but very good! Highly recommend the squid and pork cheek dishes!!!

Great little place, I'm excited
Great little place, I'm excited to go back. Everything we ate was delicious and we loved the wine list. Just a touch on the pricey side given the portion sizes but not for the neighborhood. Fun to do with a group.

Cocotte Fabulous for Small Plates
Three of us stormed Cocotte after a steamy day in NYC, and we were greeted warmly by friendly staff. Service was attentive without being rushed, and the small plates were presented beautifully and tasted delicious. Not one plate was disappointing, right down to the vanilla panna cotta with pistachio brittle and strawberries for dessert. We'll go back!

A super evening. Thanks Cocotte!
We were a group of 5 plus a baby. From the beginning to the end we had a fantastic experience: greeted with smiles, outstanding tapas/family style courses, the most friendly staff I have ever experienced in NYC and a great atmosphere. My daughter and her fiance live in West Texas and they will miss Cocotte when going back to Texas. They even upgraded our drinks and as a result we stayed there for almost 3 hours: mind you with a 8 months old baby! Thanks again Cocotte and we'll be back soon!

Kudos to Cocotte!
Cocotte was a great find! A small intimate, busy and bustling venue with fab small plates that were inventive and satisfying. Even though one in our party was lactose intolerant, our server made sure we had wonderful choices! From the stuffed mushrooms to the pork cheek and potatoes every dish was a well thought out quality experience. I would without hesitation recommend this restaurant to those who enjoy the small plate experience. The wines were outstanding as well and served by the bottle, carafe, half-carafe and glass. I really wanted to try the lemon tart, but deferred to my non dairy partner. Service was warm and friendly as well. Maybe I will sneak a solo visit in and try it!
Kudos to Cocotte!

Hits the Spot in Sweet Spot
Great find in Soho, a basement level taverna serving Basque specialties with a lighter touch. The Brandade in cocotte was very good and the veal in cocotte looked excellent. Favorite dish - farcis of stuffed squid with romesco aioli. Well-edited selection of Basque wines.

Excellent food, great and friendly service, reasonable price.
I will.be go back to cocotte again and again.

Love it here
My husband and I love our regular trips to Cocotte. Everyone is just so friendly and knowledgeable, it's extremely clear that food is a passion there. We love to try anything and everything that is recommended - food I never thought I'd like is made deliciously there. Trust what they recommend! Everything is so tasty and the small plates are perfect to share around the table.

Small and intimate space
French Basque food, small plates -- but larger than tapas, and exceptionally fresh, interesting and flavorful. We felt very well taken care of, the server was very attentive and helpful, and the manager came by the table several times, once bringing us a small taste of something we'd asked about but not ordered. Above and beyond.

Fabulously Authentic French Bistro
What the proprietors have done with this unique space is truly amazing. They have created this wonderfully welcoming and comfy feel with a menu of small plates to satisfy any and all palettes. Having an open kitchen offers dinners the pleasure of seeing how food is prepared in their supremely clean kitchen. Cocotte is so good I battle with keeping it a secret and spreading the word just enough that the business thrives.

Third time back and we just love the restaurant more and more each time.

tiny neighborhood gem
This tiny restaurant is quite a neighborhood gem in every sense. The design and ambiance is very appealing at first glance. We were tucked into a corner table (which was a little tight for my large husband, but he had such a great time that he did not complain). Our server was professional, friendly, and helpful ordering the various small plates to share -- definitely go for the daily specials. It as fun to sample various dishes and take our time enjoying each before continuing with the ordering. Something as simple as fresh vegetables and balsamic vinegar placed in a mason jar not only looked good, but was a tasty treat. Looking forward to returning to this tiny neighborhood gem during our next trip to NYC.

Interesting menu, attentive service
Liked this restaurant a lot. It's cute and cozy. Small dishes were fun, great for sharing. Interesting French/Spanish cuisine. Service was attentive, possibly over-attentive since we were with friends we hadn't seen in awhile and wanted time to talk. It kind of felt like waiters were not leaving us alone. It was loud, noisy and frenetic on a Friday night. I guess they're getting popular. We probably would have had a more relaxing experience during the week. I will definitely go back.

delightful french basque bistro
unusual mix of French and Basque cuisines. Small plates served in a delightfully unpretentious bistro with gracious service. Loved the duck confit and the veal.

What a treat
I never had basque style food before and this was a find. I highly recommend this small and delicious restaurant. The servers are informative, efficient, and add to the fun of the place. The food is absolutely delicious and most dishes are shared. GO!

Great meal, loved the owner
Great meal, loved the owner coming and chatting to us and the fact that we were able to taste some different wines before we chose a bottle - nice touch. Felt very personal and fun vibe. The pannacotta was incredible! Well done

Great Food, Fantastic Service
The food options were all great, with deep, rich flavors. We had five plates between the two of us. The food was only outdone by the service. Very attentive, but not overbearing staff from the moment you enter until you leave. Great spot!

Homestyle Basque in NYC
Cocotte offers hearty, rustic Basque cooking in a hip SoHo space. Since the menu includes both French and Spanish items, the selection is more interesting than at the increasingly ubiquitous Spanish tapas places in lower Manhattan. Each item on the menu has a unique and different taste. The wine list is somewhat limited and rather overpriced (we spent significantly more on alcohol than we did on food), and the space is very small, and can get loud after 7:30 or 8. Best to come for an early dinner: the service will be better and you won't feel crowded by people waiting for an empty table to open up.

This is a real Bistro from Paris!
You can enjoy what is hot in Paris now even in New York.

Hidden Great Places of New York
We now have returned enough to be categorical - while perhaps not to everyone's taste (no BIG bar scene, no BIG cars idling outside) it certainly is ours!! Great wine, great food, and great people!! We found it accidentally and did not return by accident. Thus far we only have had lunch but expect to remedy that in the near term

Wine & Tapa Love
My friends and I ditched a class to go here, we plan to go back. It is a French/Spanish fusion place. All the food and wine was delicious. The place is small, try to get there before 7pm on weekdays. It fills up, make reservations. Love the creative decor w/ chalk.
I ordered the butternut squash soup, heavenly. The thickness and seasoning... PERFECT. I also order a sort of cannoli w/crabmeat. It was so good, but the only thing is that it was served cold. I don't remember if the menu mentioned it being cold. I would have loved it more if it wasn't 55 degrees out side.
My friends order stuffed mushrooms, the burger, salmon, cauliflower... everything was good and no complaints. Especially from me!

Small Place - Huge Flavor
The place is small but perfectly quaint, the plates are just as cute and the flavor and variety is HUGE - all together it made this experience perfectly amazing! The atmosphere is cozy and the staff makes sure you are comfortable. The service was the best I have ever had....anywhere. They were happy and energetic about the food, wine and the people. Going down as a special spot in my book.

Expensive Basque tapas
The food is great, the portions small, and the price high. It's a nice little place.

Good food, service, rude host
Our food was very good and our server was funny, sweet and knowledgeable. She and the food were complete delights. The experience was ruined, however, when the host picked our check off the table while we were still drinking our cofee and insisted that "we need to take care of this" because he had another reservation. When I asked for time to finish our coffees, he came back 5 minutes later and again insisted that we leave. I understand that the restaurant is small, but we were not dawdling, and there is vast difference between offering to buy your patron a drink at the bar and twice rudely pushing diners out the door. At $200 for dinner for two, such rudeness should not be tolerated.

If you ask for a bottle of
If you ask for a bottle of wine at the cheaper end dont include an expensive wine when offering a tasting of two.
I chose the one I liked most assuming it was at the cheaper end and then got stung on the bill with $57 bottle of wine - not cool and has made me consider not returning and not recommending to friends as I have been doing.

Unpretentious and cozy, great energy excellent food and wine.

I never before had the experience of making a reservation on Open Table without the requirement of a credit card guarantee, only to find the day before that my reservation made weeks before was going to be cancelled unless I put up a credit card. I felt that was a low blow, so I went to the restaurant with some trepidation. The restaurant is run by Raphael, who is at once charming and tough. He would kick you out the minute that he felt you were not going to order anything more. He literally told people to leave! We watched this take place at several other tables before having the same experience ourselves. The food in this tiny restaurant was lovely, and the wine options were very nice, but in the future I would only go on a weekday.
11/8/2013 4:00:00 PM
What a fantastic little Restaurent! We will definitely go back and recommend it to others. There is a small but superb menu and a real taste of France. Go and find out for yourself, you will not regret it!

Cocotte is a wonderful little nook with homey, perfect-for-winter dishes. The service was incredible, everyone (it was somewhat unclear who our server was as all the servers were helping our table) was friendly, helpful and attentive. The food was delicious, and despite what some reviewers have said I thought the portions were perfect considering how rich a lot of the dishes are. I had the butternut squash soup, which was the best I've ever tasted, and the pork cheek with potatoes was perfectly cooked, with lots of flavor. The place is very small, I would not recommend coming here with more than 4 people, and definitely not without a reservation, but the coziness really adds to the experience. Fantastic find!

Fun place, although a bit uneven
We really like Cocotte: it's a place everyone would want to have in their neighborhood, especially if you like French country & Spanish cuisine. Our only complaint is that the dishes are quite uneven: some are great but others were really bland. You don't want such inconsistency in a place that focuses on small plates. Standouts include the beef, the cauliflower gratin, and the tortilla. Bland dishes included the chicken and a crab pasta dish. Brandade and burger were good, as was the lentil dish (although it felt like a side rather than a standalone dish). Dessert tarts were disappointing. Red wines: great; whites: not so great. We really love the vibe of this place, the chef just needs to crank up some of the offerings to the next level.
