This is a restaurant for people
This is a restaurant for people who take food seriously, but don't take themselves seriously. It is fun, food is great and service is both friendly and timely. We had a great time with our friends and the people at the next table.

Excellent menu, clearly explained
Excellent menu, clearly explained by knowledgable service staff. Movies show on one of the walls to give added atmosphere. Food and drinks arrived promptly and were delicious. The restaurant is tucked away in a courtyard but is well worth searching out for the incredible Tapas!

Small plates...Big flavor
Incredible food... The tapas was excellent. Everyone was so nice and provided excellent insight into the menu.

Very nice dining experience
Very nice dining experience overall. Tapas were very good; some authentic while others were modern interpretations. We had the paella- it was very good with excellent seafood and delicious rice but alas no soccarat. Service was good but I actually don't need to be on a first name basis with my waiter.

Authentic and delicious Spanish
Authentic and delicious Spanish Tapas, fun atmosphere. Nice wine selection.
Make sure to try the Chorizo Albondigas (meatballs)

Love the food here and my
Love the food here and my parents did too when we brought them while on holiday visiting. Absolutely wonderful - our favourite are the stuffed dates which are delicious! This also seems to be one of the more buzzing places in the extremely quiet neighbourhood of Carmel - if you're not one of the people who want to be tucked up in bed by 9 then you should check this place out! Service can be slightly erratic - always extremely polite and helpful, but they do often seem to be rushed off their feet.

Every time we go there we feel that have traveled to Spain and gives us a "get away" to enjoy a nice quiet evening. We love it and the food is delicious! Service is wonderful. Can't wait to go back.

Good food, music, wine and drink
We enjoyed our virtual trip to Spain at Mundaka. Tasty tapas accompanied by a tempranillo just about perfectly matched to the food and an attentive waiter, made for a pleasant evening. The live music added a nice touch - but the acoustics of the place made it too noisy for easy conversation -- the hard of hearing don't have a prayer.
4/29/2013 4:00:00 PM
We absolutely loved our evening at Mundaka. It was the middle of the week so it wasn't terribly busy but the food was outstanding, the ambiance was really laid back and it was a great place for a date. Would definitely recommend and go again should we be in Carmel again.

Tapas and more
Our party of three really enjoyed this place. It is casual, yet elegant and European in feel. We started with a chicken sausage and parsnip purée appetizer, plus a green salad with Spanish cheese. Then we shared a big seafood paella. Traditional dishes are given a modern interpretation, which we liked. Wines and cocktails were also of special interest. We'll definitely be back.

Great Service, Amazing Food
The service was outstanding and servers were very knowledgable. Food was some of the best and unique we have had in a long time! Highly recommend!

Tasty and reasonably priced for a town where many restaurants are pricey. Relaxed atmosphere, and friendly staff. I eat at many Tapas places, and this one was a little different...but good different.

If you like tapas, this is the place for you. Mundaka offers a nice variety of plates suitable for two people to share. Quality was very good and we especially enjoyed the fried garbanzo beans and the ravioli. Service was excellent.

The food was great. The drinks are delicious, but expensive. The room can be very noisy.

My first time at Mundaka's, though my friend had been there before. I loved the tapas, very filling and tasty. We had a miscommunication w/ the waiter Robert, and ended up ordering the paella also. It came, very nice presentation. It was a bit disappointing that the rice was overcooked and the overall dish was too salty. The mussels and clams were very very small.
The overall ambience of the restaurant was a bit noisy, but very very cozy! I would definitely recommend this place again and again.

We've been going to Mundaka for the past 2-3 years and have not yet been disappointed. Tapas are sensational, and authentic. Had the best duck confit, none can compare to it. Wine list is pretty good and wait staff is knowledgeable and attentive.

We will definitely be back...again
We will definitely be back...again and again! The food was fabulous - having been to Spain a few times, I was leery as to whether the restaurant would be able to replicate some of our favorite tapas - it does that and more! There was even a little wonderful, unobtrusive background Spanish guitar. Lovely!

A great spanish find
My wife and I went there for our 15th anniversary and we just loved it. The food was authentic, and the staff was fun and helpful. We had a great time.

I love this place
And every time I've been, it's been great. Highly recommend it.
7/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
We loved the vibrant atmosphere and the consistently delicious food - not to mention the interesting and well priced wine list. Such a fun date night spot. The tables were a bit crowded but that would be my only complaint.
7/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
I liked this place. Excellent tapas and very attentive service from Robert, our waiter, who was a hoot. Nice tequila selection as well.
7/10/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great but too close for comfort
My girlfriends and I had a great experience from the food to the Service. Our only complaint was the closeness of the tables. Definitely lots of unintentional eavesdropping going on. Otherwise great experience!

First time visitors
We enjoyed our first visit and would go back again. Carmel seem like a hard place to find a meal that's decent and reasonable. Mundaka was fun, cool staff, interesting drinks, and fairly priced tapas. 5 of us shared some paella which was nice, too. Lots of shrimp, scallops, and clams. Clams were so-so, however.

Food was very good, kept trying new dishes, cause you always have room for one more

Good, but very noisy
The food was great! It was tapas, so small plates were expected, but the ravioli portion was absolutely laughable. It was nice they also offered larger dishes for 2. Mixed drinks were divine, couldn't make a bad decision. Decor was simple, classy, and the walls changed colours every so often. The only thing that detracted from the overall experience, is that it was VERY loud. I was sitting across from my husband at a rather cozy table, and had a tough time enjoying myself because I felt like I was in other people's conversations. Needs some sound dampening panels.

Great find. Simple, well-prepared Spanish favorites that highlight seasonal offerings without breaking the bank. Thoughtful wine list and knowledgable sommelier. The atmosphere is hip mixed with homey Iberian touches.
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
I've been to Mundaka several times and it is always consistently excellent. Tapas are a delight and wonderfully inventive. I've had the paella twice and it's fantastic! The challenge is in not eating too many of the small dishes while waiting for the paella to come. :-) Love the gingerbread dessert too. Haven't had a real 'cake' gingerbread since my childhood. Love the energy and the extremely friendly staff.
8/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is one of the restaurants I always recommend to visitors from out of town and my own guests. Delicious. A great place to visit even after dinner. Reservations needed for a table. Loud but lively, joyful, hospitable. Excellent service.

Go Here for Something Special
We had a reservation prior and upon arrival were quickly seated. Its a little hard to find (behind liquor store), but in a cool little outdoor plaza. The waiter was very gregarious and professional but things got pretty busy and he got side tracked later in the night. The food was amazing. We ordered the Spanish fried peppers (not on menu). Looking like a fired jalapeño and tasting like a very mild hatch, they were served with a bit of salt... perfect with the bottle of Sangria we ordered. Now, I don't really like rice, and am lukewarm on Paella, but i have to agree with other reviewers - this was amazing. Altogether a great experience, probably one of the best dinners i have had. And all for around $100!

We were very nicely surprised
We were very nicely surprised by finding this little gem in Carmel - we made the reservation after reading about them on Urban Spoon. Very good food and atmosphere - hip and vibrant , with lively bar scene and interesting choice of music and movies projected on the wall. Nice place to people watch too - artistic and bohemian atmosphere... still the food manages to shine through it all at very moderate price. Highly recommended.

Excellent quality and innovative
Excellent quality and innovative food. Pretty casual atmosphere. Plates come out of the kitchen a bit too fast not allowing sufficient time to savor each unique meal.
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
We were in Carmel for the night and wanted something a little different so we made reservations for 8:30 pm. Ambiance was great, hubby said he felt transported back to Spain. We took our 8-year-old, who had a great time, but this is not generally a bring-your-kid environment. We ordered several tapas ( olives, bravas, croquetas, coliflor, bacon-wrapped-date whatevers) and the paella. Our favorites were the bacon-dates and croquetas with the paella running a close second. Coliflor was very good, bravas were just average but sauce was great. Paella was great, but a bit salty and light on the saffron. It was a lot of food for the three of us, paella serves 4+, even though it says "paella for two". We will be coming back!

Great things in small packages
Mundaka was a great find for our trip down the coast. All small plates in a small cozy (if a bit loud) environment. Very easy feel with excellent and varied tastes. Staff was attentive, informative and comfortably informal.

this restaurant has not only outstanding food but the service is just as Outstanding. there is absolutely nothing that I can say that will give you the true experience unless you go there yourself and take part in the wonderful variety of choices of tapas and simply marvelous service. The atmosphere is quiet and charming.
their menu and enjoy the total experience? it was just marvelous?

A little bit of Spain seaside Calif
Creative combinations of traditional and new Spanish tapas. Skillfully prepared using fresh authentic ingredients. A great night in Carmel!

Comfortable neighborhood restaurant
We have been to Mundaka before and really enjoyed it. We are just 3 blocks from the restaurant. This time my husband and I were by ourselves to enjoy an evening of talking and enjoying each other. We had the Duck confit. To die for. I will come back just for that. Having the small plates with delicious wine is perfect for us. My husband loves the lamb slider and fries. The bravas are wonderful and the cauliflower is wonderful. Dessert was sherry that the chef picked and we had a sweet to go with it.
10/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
We had the paella. It was wonderful. The chef came out and spoke to us about the dish and his plans for a new dish with sanddabs. Our waiter was very personable and caring. We will definitely go back.

Great food but distracted service
Not sure if their involvement in a new room was the reason, but our service was very distracted. We got there at 6:15 on Wednesday night. Sat for 20 minutes before someone brought water or asked us about anything. The tables are very close (and maybe why a new room being added?). It wss difficult to have a private conversation.
The food, however, made up for the discomfort and distracted service. Be sure to get the bacon- wrapped figs stuffed with goat cheese, sardines and garlic, cauliflower with gruyere cheese. I liked the sangria but didn't love it.
I would return but hope the other room is open and the waiter is more attentive. Be sure to make a reservation before going. Locals flocked to this place.

Charming little restaurant tucked away among shops in Carmel. Two of us ordered several plates and shared except I ate the entire plate of white anchovy with crisped garlic coins. Fresh, perfectly served, and not to be passed up. Cold duck breast, outstanding; traditional tortilla yummy; amazing shrimp in creamy sauce we mopped up with bread. Next time it's definitely Charlie's raw goat cheese trio for dessert. Food for the foodie with outstanding service and a charming environment adds up to a lovely evening out. It's a taste and linger cafe, on the expensive side but with no pressure to get up and leave. I will go back often and bring friends from out of the area to show off Monterey Bay food.

Ambiance Ambiance Ambiance!!!
We love Mundaka!! It is a fine dining experience and we really enjoy the atmosphere. We will go there often...Prices are high, but I think it's worth it mostly

Fun and entertaining
Our experience at Mundaka was fun. There was plenty to entertain including the live entertainment and the showing of a Clint Eastwood movie on the wall (appropriate for Carmel). The food was creative and good. We didn't want to leave.

Wish Mundaka was open when I lived in Carmel! It's delicious with great service and loads of energy! A must dine for locals or when visiting. Enjoy!
