This was my second visit --
This was my second visit -- first time pastrami, second time pastrami-smoked salmon. First time rocked! the pastrami is perfection (if expensive). Second time, less so. The honey in the Montreal bagel is distracting; they probably use a smaller flatter bagel to compensate for the fact that the salmon portion is a little skimpy, but there is so little salmon it can't stand up to the sweetness. A flagel would be better and give the salmon less competition. (Though it is nice to have a Montreal bagel in DC.) I would still go back for more pastrami and the chopped liver and the definitely-not-your-mother's kasha varnishkas. And the cauliflower is also very tasty, why not go ahead and get a vegetable?

Love DGS! The service is always welcoming and efficient, and the food is terrific! Terrific chopped liver, excellent matzo ball soup and tasty pastrami!

Food: Very good. Noisy.
One visit, so I'll vouch for pastrami sand-
wich and matzoh ball soup only, but no
reason to doubt quality of other dishes.
Noisy at lunch time -- hard to hear friend

We got a bunch of food and it was all delicious! The service was on point--just the right amount of attention. I would definitely recommend getting the cauliflower as a surprisingly tasty side. Also the pickle plate; you will have fun guessing the flavors. The taste is pretty authentic Jewish as well.

My friend and I really enjoyed our meal at DGS. The hostess was extremely friendly as was the manager who greeted us at the door. Our server was very friendly and good and all our food came out quickly. Our tables were bussed quickly and our water was always refreshed which was very much appreciated. The staff anticipated all our needs and we didn't have to ask for anything except our check at the end. My friend and I shared the potato latkes and the seasoned fries which were good. We also shared the pastrami sandwhich which was outstanding. My favorite dish was the matzo ball soup. The decor and the images on the baking pans were a particularly nice touch. I had a great experience at DGS and will absolutely be making a return visit.

Brought in my father-in-law from Philadelphia, who was raised on old school jewish fare. He loved everything he ate.
5/17/2013 4:00:00 PM
The pastrami sandwich is worth the trip by itself. The take-out counter is an added bonus. The service was attentive and prompt.
All the food was tasty, fresh, and the hot dishes were hot.

DGS = THE BOMB!
Great restaurant! Celebrated my birthday there. Quite fun!
5/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
DGS deli reinvents and reinterprets the classics. Everything about the place is smart-- almost too smart for its own good. We LOVE the brilliant cocktails, the classics like corned beef and Reuben, and the reinventions like the child cucumber soup--not tradtional but rather like a sorbet only not frozen. Bright creek, pure cucumber essence, just delicious!!!
5/24/2013 4:00:00 PM
Great food. Great service. Reasonable prices. I'm definitely coming back.
5/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
How a Deli is supposed to be!
I had the Corned Beef Sandwich and a pickle plate. All of the items on the pickle plate were delicious. The sandwich was thick and juicy and the mustard was a just right compliment to the flavor. I highly recommend DGS Delicatessen to all.

Really Good Deli Food
Went here and had the charcuterie-type plate to share and the club sandwich. All the meats were well-seasoned and extremely moist. My club sandwich was huge but did not come with any sides. I was full from the sandwich and sharing the meat board. The portion sizes were good, not huge but you definitely got a lot of meat in your sandwich. The drinks were okay, like any other craft cocktails served nowadays.
6/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great meat and bread!
The sandwiches are delicious and they are just the right size!
I would like to be able to call in for order to go food
6/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
More to come; meets expectations
Aside from the black currant flavored iced tea, promoted as plain home brew, the lunch was quite good. Not NY thin deli sliced, but thicker cuts of pastrami on tasty rye with home dressing after good tasting, home pickled platter with wonderful mushrooms and other delights. Cobb salad with corned beef was quite taste as were the fries with zatar...good Middle Eastern touch. While some may quibble with "kosher style," there's always Loeb's for the pure of heart...

Restaurant very accommodating
The reservation started for 6, and then they agreed to expand for 8. After we arrived, they expanded it again for 10. I had been concerned about the size of the party, but the host, manager and server all made us feel comfortable. One of the benefits of a large party was the possibility of sampling most of the menu!
6/8/2013 12:00:00 AM
Not a typical deli!
This is a modern take on the delicatessen with twists on some classic dishes. They do all their own smoking and pickling and everything we've had has been very delicious! Additionally, the beverages are great - both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. We highly recommend it.
6/16/2013 12:00:00 AM
Love this place! Can't wait until the chef writes a cookbook. Especially love the smoked salmon, french toast, chicken soup, mahi mahi, chocolate egg creams, and the always-fantastic noodle kugel (which would have been a side dish, not a dessert, in my home). (The latkes, however, need some work.) The service--especially the host--is the best! Go there, go often.
6/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Love this place
I am a New York Jew who thinks the pastrami, chopped liver, and lox (among many other excellent menu items) are sensational. But you don't have to love deli food to love the excellent sppetizers and entrees this place offers. Just went with my family. We shared delicious appetizers, had our own entrees, and left a smidgen of room for the melt in your mouth babka pudding which we also shared. The service is excellent and friendly.
6/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
Excellent all around!
Friendly staff, nice upper level seating area. The chopped liver was a hit with the whole table...main dishes were solid as well...cant wait to go back!

A great find
My wife and I had tried unsuccessfully to walk-in and get a table at DGS a couple times. Finally, I made a reservation on a weeknight and ironically it was quiet and we didn't need one. BUT, we found out what all the hype was about. The food was great. The latkes were awesome, I really loved the pickle plate and the matzo ball soup was perfect. I highly recommend giving this place a shot - if you find it's not too long of a wait.

Very enjoyable experience
We didn't know quite what to expect with this new deli. It is definitely a step up from traditional deli food. The meats and salads are all made in house and are delicious. We had the corned beef and it was wonderful. We also tried the cole slaw and kasha -- both very good too. The sides are all separate and are priced separately -- not like a traditional deli where you would normally get one side with your dish. However, the quality and size of the sides make it worthwhile. Overall we had a lovely dining experience at DGS -- and I'm from Brooklyn so that's saying a lot!

Ironing out some kinks
Fabulous deli food with some interesting twists. Pastrami hash was outstanding! All the usual deli staples with a few surprises. All excellent. Dessert list was great. Liked the bread pudding especially. Our waitress had just started and needs more time to get things down. But the food made up for any other shortcomings.
7/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
Important to understand what this restaurant is. Not quite the wild side of deli some might lead you to believe. The twists are playful yet minor. Sumac mustard on corned beef sounds exotic but doesn't change sandwich noticeably (corned beef was on fatty side too). At the same time, a very good house salad--miles beyond iceberg and bland tomatoes. Also fresh and tasty whitefish salad, clearly made there. One miss among all of our dishes was the cucumber soup: too salty and small. All in all a good step above ordinary deli, much welcome in DC, but with prices to match.

Always a Hit
We love to take out-of-town friends here. The variety of food is perfect and it's always a hit with foodies. We order the Schmutzy Fries almost every time. Delicious! The cheesecake dessert is one of my favorites in the city.

DGS....."D*** Good Sustenance!!"
Having a hankering for some eastern European-inspired food, I decided to try the fare at DGS Deli last, Friday eve. The menu had many options for sandwiches, dinner entrees, etc., however, I decided on one of the all day breakfast items offered. O-M-G for DGS! Who would have thought that eggs scrambled with matzo, leafy greens and sauteed chicken livers could induce a state of nirvana?! This dish was amazing in its simplicity yet combination of unexpected ingredients. DELICIOUS!! For dessert, I had a rustic tart of blueberries and peaches with a side of ice-cream placed on top of some of the best granola/nut brittle that I have ever eaten. Needless to say, I WILL definitely return soon..maybe even this week! Oy vey...there goes my diet!

Recommended by a friend and I loved it! Cool place...would recommend it to anyone!

Very good service and food. A bit too noisy upstairs once the dinner hour got going.

Special event barbecue
It was the best barbecue I've ever had. A melt-in-your-mouth rich and subtle smokey flavor. Not over-sauced. Sides -- grilled corn and schmaltzy greens -- were delicious. We were seated in the Private Dining Room [PDR], small and cozy. Loved it!

The DGS Cobb is my absolute
The DGS Cobb is my absolute favorite!!! Thanks for a yummy lunch as always!

Excellent food and excellent
Excellent food and excellent service. Noise level is a little on the high side so it was hard to hear across the table at times but once the food came no one was talking.
8/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
The pierogis, latkes and stuffed cabbage were great, though the orzo that came with the stuffed cabbage was mad salty and I don't mean it got played.
8/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
I had been meaning to check out DGS for awhile and was not disappointed. My friends also loved it, and we utterly destroyed those pastrami fries.
8/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
If you're tired of being served Boar's Head as a substitute for true deli pastrami, DGS is the place for you! The house-made pastrami is served thick cut on perfect rye bread. The grilled asparagus we tried as a side was also nicely prepared. My only complaint is that the $14 pastrami sandwich comes with a slice of pickle and nothing more. Adding a side dish will push the cost of your sandwich lunch up to or over the $20 mark :-( Nevertheless, as a special treat, it's absolutely worthwhile.

Just like bubbe
Always great food. Service is always great. Get the schmutsy fries!
9/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great drinks to start. Good starters. Burger outstanding as the other sandwiches!!! Will be back

Good food, excellent service
You've got to have the schmutzy fries--they are fantastic.

nom nom nom
I love cured meats and good home cooking - this place was right up my alley. great menu selections - i was torn between five things and the server recommended them all so i went with the smoked salmon "pastrami" and it was terrific. fast coming out of the kitchen, and the pickles were the best i've ever tasted.
9/19/2013 5:00:00 PM
menu combines tradition/innovation
sometimes not easily, but often very well: worth working one's way through to find favorites. Space is not as comfortable as one might wish, but it is bright and light. Lots of nice small touches... a few odd ones.
9/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
The non-meat eaters in our party had the eggplant reuben and the pickled vegetable plate. Delicious. The matzo ball soup and latkes are great. Friendly service and comfortable atmosphere. We would definitely return.
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Love the new fall menu
Took my friends there for a birthday celebration and to try the new menu. Always a problem trying new entrees when you want to keep ordering what you already had -- Fri nite chicken was fantastic. But I shared with my hubby who had the flounder schnitzel. Lots of sides -- brussels [the greatest], squash and fries. Hard to leave room for the great desserts, but it was a party!

First timer: Birthday Dinner
We loved most of the food. Burger, Potato Salad, Matzo Ball Soup and Mushroom Barley Soup were great. The Benedictburg would have been sublime if not for an intolerable oversalting of the latkes. We didn't eat the latkes but the rest of the plate was so good that we will definately have it again with a no-salt request.
Service excellent. Wait staff was patient and attentive to our every whim.

DGS - a GREAT deli in D.C.!
Check DGS out. It is not your "cookie cutter" so-called deli that have been popping up various places. This is the real deal. Some things are their own "twist." That said, the "twists" are all good. My favorite is the pastrami. Also, don't miss the pickles.
10/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Only 2 minor negatives about this truly wonderful place: the chairs were a bit uncomfortable, and it was hard to hear our own conversation over those of our neighbors (we were seated upstairs). The food is incredible and the service excellent. The decor inside is very attractive, and when the weather is warm, they have a great outdoor terrace.
11/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
Best pastrami between NY & Miami -- and upscale, imaginative dishes way beyond the typical deli realm
11/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
high end deli actually exists.
high end deli actually exists. Been eating NY deli for 30 years, and DGS is the best.
11/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
Not a NY Deli -- Far, Far Better
Don't confuse DGS with any other deli, unless it has an unusual and affordable wine list and an award-winning bar program [best happy hour in DC according to Food and Wine. Oh, and a French-trained chef. DGS is a mecca for house-cured, smoked meats and fish. But it's also a top-tier [mid-priced] dining room that modernizes old world traditions to please contemporary palates. Flounder schnitzel, short rib stroganoff, grilled cod with black olive vinaigrette, and stuffed cabbage on the same menu? You bet.
Flavors are true and precise; presentation perfect. My favorites: Saturday Prime Rib Special [prix-fixe steal at $29.95], Pastrami Hash, Friday Night Chicken and of course, pastrami and corned beef. For dessert: babka bread pudding -- wow.

Took my dad to dinner for his birthday. We were a party of 5. We were sat immediately. Hostess was perfect. Server was helpful and attentive. The ambience was bustling and energetic. A fun place to dine. The food was excellent, everyone in our party was enthusiastic about returning.

chairs very uncomfortable. A bit cramped but service was great and food very good.

Food and service were excellent, though sitting near the door got a bit chilly! Try the pastrami, pickles, and chopped liver.

Interesting Menu for a "Deli"
This is not your typical deli. Most of the dishes would never appear on the menu of any real (NYC) delicatessen.
There are some very interesting choices, however - such as the "eggplant Reuben" sandwich and black bean soup.
The service was attentive although our waiter admitted to being relatively new and not 100% knowledgeable about some of the menu items.
The space is well designed.
One negative: the metal chairs are not very comfy.
