Girls Night Out Winner!
Great addition to Williamsburg, loved it. I had never tried it before I took a group of ladies for girls night out, all eight of us loved our food. Presentation was beautiful, seafood was fresh, french fries perfect. Lovely, charming staff that made us feel welcome. We all will return and introduce other friends to this new and exciting place.

We ordered the fried oyster
We ordered the fried oyster appetizer and it was the best we have ever had. My husband ordered a steak and again it was one of the best he has ever eaten.

An amazing place with an incredible
An amazing place with an incredible menu. We are from NYC and know good restaurants and will deeply miss having a place like this to go to. Casual, great service and everything and anything you want, both in seafood and steak. Any don't even forget about dessert, as they have an amazing pastry chef who did this best Apple Carmel Pie. BEST EVER!

This recently opened restaurant
This recently opened restaurant is a welcome addition to the Williamsburg area. The food is excellent and the wait staff is well trained. It also has one of the best selections of single malt scotch.

New favorite place
Decided to try this place based of reviews on Open Table and I was very happy I did. The place was very inviting with the color scheme and lights and appeared to be very clean. Upon review of the menu and some suggestions from our waiter we decided on the Ahi Tuna entrée and Crab cakes With House smoked wings to start. The wings are by far the best I have ever had and the house made hot sauce gave heat and flavor which is a rare thing. Entrée’s arrived in a timely manner with me and my wife splitting entrees as she likes to do. I really enjoyed the Ahi tuna cooked med rare as it should be and the crab cake was made with big pieces of crabs and little filler. Our server was very at tentative and kept us entertained at times. Williamsburg's Best Kept Secret
From the delicious and moderately priced menu to the attentive wait staff, Holy Mackeral is a true gem! We got to meet the owners who were featured on tv's " The Travel Chanbel" for their incredible ability to create amazing concoctions from the bar. Fabulous experience!

We were pleasantly surprised
We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. Don't let the strip all location fool you, the food is great, they have a lovely wine selection and a game room and bar for fun nights.

Good food and excellent service.
Good food and excellent service. We appreciate how the manager makes his way to each table to see how the patrons are enjoying their meals or if they have any concernes. They also have a great selection of wines and local brews (draught and bottle). The stuffed flounder and grilled salmon are very good.

Welcome to the neighborhood
My wife was a little apprehensive about going to Holy Mackeral for Mother's Day, the friends reviews were mixed. The visit was quite pleasant, She had snow crab legs and an order of steamed clams. She was impressed. The Alaskan crab legs were meaty and sweet and the clams some of the best she has ever had. I had blackened Ahi Tuna that was very good. The service was outstanding. The ambiance is that of a fish house. It is not a tablecloth place. If you want good food and service, go.

Enjoyed first visit 2 Holy Mackerel
I met some friends at HM's Saturday early evening.
It was my first visit and I was very pleased with the restaurant, food, and beer selection. I hope they get more craft brews in for selection. I had the steamer plate with crab legs and shrimp because I was trying to keep down the carbs (man I wanted the fish and chips!!). The steamer plate was good. I hope to come back on a Monday evening when they have all you can eat crab legs (and an option for shrimp too). My buddy got the oyster po-boy and it looked awesome!
The oysters on the half-shell and steamed clams we got for apps were very good too.

Great food and service
We went for lunch back in May. The favorite at our table were the fish tacos. Though everything
Was tasty. Two of us had the sangria...at the suggestion of the server and we were not disappointed.
5/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was our first visit but not our last. We were first seated in a very noisy back room. We asked and received a booth in the front opposite the windows. Much better. I will request a table in the front from now on.
Food was very good and service was fast.

This was our first, but certainly not last visit to Holy Mackerel! The oysters were the best I've ever eaten, and everyone at our table really loved their meals!

Amazing Food, Great Service
My friend recommended this restaurant to me, she has been several times and is always impressed. I have read some reviews describing the food as average and I couldn't disagree more! I have lived in the area for many years and can't remember the last time I have been to a seafood restaurant with reasonable prices and Fresh Quality Flavorful Food. This restaurant is not a chain and it shows. The staff and management go out of their way to make sure you are well taken care of and you just don't see that anymore. This is by far my new favorite place to eat.
5/30/2013 4:00:00 PM
Had a wonderful meal with great service. we went at 5:00 on a Sat. so it was not crowded at all which meant the noise was very low. I had the crab legs--1 lb serving was about 3 large clusters--very nicely prepared. Husband had raw oysters which he loved and followed that with bbq platter--he said the bbq was great. It was a huge serving; he couldn't even finish it all. We will definitely go again although the prices on draft beer were higher than most places--$7.50 for a craft beer down to 3.50 for a Bud (and who drinks Bud after sampling craft beers.

Happy we Went
We made a reservation and arrived a few minutes early. We were seated promptly and our drink orders were taken almost immediately. My husband ordered the special, Fried Catfish, with a side caesar salad. I ordered the Tuna sashimi with shrimp and the steamed clams. The food was excellent! The steamed clams were amazing and the sashimi was very well done. It was served with an Asian slaw that was very different and very good. The dressing on the caeser salad was very garlickly. It was easy to tell that it was made in house. I will be ordering one of my own next time. This is a great local spot, away from the tourist areas. The focus is one good fish and seafood. We will definitely eat here often.

Simple menu with well prepared
Simple menu with well prepared fish.
Shrimp and grits appetizer was flavored well without being spicy.
Salads were big and fresh. My wife had the pan seared scallops and they were done just right, very moist without being overlooked and dried out. I had a creole dish in a skillet that was well seasoned but could have used a little more sauce.
Service was friendly and attentive.
All in all a relaxed evening with good food at moderate prices.

Friends had previously recommended Holy Mackerel, but it took having some friends in town before we actually tried it. We shared the Fried Oysters, steamed Topneck Clams and the Tuna Sashimi & Shrimp. I didn't try the tuna but the clams and oysters were wonderful. For dinner we enjoyed the crab cakes, the all you can eat crablegs and the N'awlins Skillet. We will definitely return soon!
6/16/2013 4:00:00 PM
This is my second time taking a group of lady friends to Holy Mackerel grill. Both groups agree this is a new found treasure. The atmosphere, cocktails, food and the attentive, friendly staff are the best in town. Can't say enough about this great place. Thank you to the staff for their kind, smiling faces and acomadating our requests.
6/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
Was very surprised at what a good job the new owners did with this location after several failed attempts at a restaurant. I had the Wings to start and then the crab cakes both tasty and worth going back for. We will put this in our rotation of places to dine.
6/27/2013 4:00:00 PM
Made a last minute reservation and staff was very helpful in getting us a table on a Friday night. We split a shrimp and grits and loved them. We decided on the special that night which was a steamed pot with crab legs, oysters, shrimp and clams. We both enjoyed the selection along with the very well dressed salads. We will be back.
6/27/2013 4:00:00 PM
Very good seafood
We had shrimp and scallops and both were excellent and portions were large. The selection of fish was limited, but there are enough entrees to make this a neighborhood regular for us.

The food and service was excellent. Good people doing a good job.

Worth hitting up
We were staying at the Williamsburg Plantation. It was right next door. We liked our food and this is worth going to for a quick dinner.

Great Fish Find
We had grilled salmon and it was some of the best I have ever had. The she crab soap was the same, absolutely excellent! I am going back soon.

Holy Mackeral is right on!
Menu was inviting and varied, staff attentive but not hovering, food delicious, what should have been cold was cold (like butter and sour cream) and what should have been hot was hot (like the plates and food). Raw oysters were freshly shucked and served on ice, with sides of seafood sauce and extra horseradish. Crab cakes fell apart with large chunks of crabmeat. The asparagus was grilled --never finish my green veggies but these were yummy. Fried oysters? To die for!! No need to travel east or west to get better oysters--these are scrumptious!! Finished our meal with a shared chocolate mousses in a huge martini glass. It doesn't get any better!

New restaurant at an old location. We were two couples trying this out for the first time. We were very pleased. All Dishes were presented well and very tasty. Very good selections. Certainly well worth checking out.

Our new go-to seafood....
We spend about a month at Ford's Colony each year and were delighted to discover this restaurant last year. We had a lunch and then a dinner that trip - this trip we were only able to have a dinner there. Brenda did a WONDERFUL job bringing us anything we asked for everything we forgot to ask for. Fried shrimp platter - excellent. Fish and chips - excellent. I usually ordered broiled fish but wanted to sample what our grandchildren might order. Crispy french fries were hot and perfect. Cole slaw mild and yummy. Shrimp golden brown and delicious. Next trip we'll be sure to schedule at least one lunch and one dinner here....Highly recommend !!

A Must Try When in Williamsburg!
We gave this place a try b/c of other reviews. So glad we did. They had great appetizers, food selection, and kids meals (only $5 & $6) came w/ a toy they could pick out! There is an attached game room w/ arcade games & pool tables which kept them occupied while we enjoyed cocktails and the rest of our meal. We started w/ clam strips and cheese sticks (for the kids). My hubby and I had the Ahi Tuna which was sizable & superb! My mom had the crab cakes and loved them! What's not to love? Good food, good drinks, good time had by all!

Just what we wanted
Very good food and service. Not expensive, but fine dining for sure

Great place for elevated pub fair
We had a group of 8, including 1 vegetarian & 3 picky eaters under 12. There were plenty of tasty options, including a blue box/Kraft Mac & Cheese for the youngest. The shrimp and grits was well-seasoned & the grits were silky goodness. The cod for my fish & chips was lightly battered & not greasy. The side plates of vegetables that we ordered were cooked to a nice al dente & tossed in a nice salty butter. Even the side salads had fresh ingredients & weren't treated as an afterthought. The veg version of the pasta had an abundance of veg & the flat pasta noodles were well seasoned & delicious. The Alaskan King crab legs & the scallops were fresh & tasty, a far cry from the usual overpriced/poor quality seafood buffets we've had in the past.

Great addition to Williamsburg area
Visited for first time on a week night after reading reviews in local media. My wife had the seared scallops that had been previously reviewed as outstanding, and she was not disappointed. The other lady of our party of four had the crab-stuffed flounder which was the special of the evening, and enjoyed it as well. Her husband and I each had the Nawlins' skillet, which I have to say was one of the best Creole dishes I've had recently. A generous portion of Jasmine rice covered with a thick, spicy Creole sauce with shrimp, scallops, and Andouille sausage. The sausage was particularly good with a nice smoky flavor. Overall, everyone enjoyed their meals as evidenced by four clean plates (something I personally am rarely able to do).

Nice place for a seafood dinner
We all enjoyed our dinners. I had the taryaki salmon which unfortunately continued to cook in the hot skillet they serve it in. I will have to try some others options next time. The restaurant offers nothing for the celebration of an anniversary or birthday as some others do, so might not be the best place for a special occasion.
9/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is my 3rd visit to Holy Mackeral and it has not disappointed on any occasion

My husband and I lived in
My husband and I lived in Williamsburg from 2008-2010. We visited this past weekend for the first time since we left. We decided to try Holy Mackerel, since it was not there when we lived in the area. We are so glad we took a chance. I could have eaten the shrimp and grits all evening! The flavors and texture were perfect. Delicious! My husband ordered the Nawlins Skillet for his entree and I had the crab cake dinner. I'm from the Eastern Shore, so I'm very picky about my crabcakes! Holy Mackerel did not disappoint. Plenty of lump crab meat and not too much filler! My daughter enjoyed the smoked ribs. We will definitely return to this restaurant the next time we visit the area.
9/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
We have eaten there before once for dinner and another time for lunch as usual it was great. When we arrived they had out table ready set with waters, napkins and table ware. The lobster special was cook perfect and just the right size tail. With the option to purchase another for about 1/2 price if one was still hungry that would be a good idea. Ours got fried shrimp which is a large serving fried just right. Salmon was the please of the other guest and one plate was completely cleaned and the other taken home in a box for lunch. All in all a great place to eat good, fresh seafood.
11/4/2013 4:00:00 PM
My scallops were scrumptious, cooked just right with yummy sides.

Nice selection of food and beer! Good food and good service. We will definitely go back.

Best kept secret in Williamsburg VA
We stumbled on this restaurant in an unimaginative-looking strip mall near my sisters house just after Thanksgiving. It was GREAT! We weren't expecting much, but didn't want to battle the crowds of the historic area, so thought we were 'settling.' Our party had a variety of dishes, ranging from scallops to crab legs to fried oysters (and we are all pretty picky 'foodies'.) We were delighted with everything! AND, it was quiet enough to be able to chat (becoming a lost art for restaurants these days.) The seafarer's ambience works well, as does having ae separate bar area. Try the eggnog-tini for the holidays...it was sublime!)
A wonderful find...we'll be back and will make it part of our regular annual Williamsburg pilgrimmage.

fishing for food
We found this place hunting on open table so we decided to give it a try. We going to newport news on sunday and this was just off longhill road and close to rt. 199. I had the scallops and they were done just right, asparagras was fresh and cooked over a open flame. Wife had fish and chips, fish was flakey and large with great flavor. Only negative I saw was a empty place as we were the only people besides the wait staff. This place needs to do more advertising as it's a great place and it's back in a strip mall with no signs on the road that I saw. Please don't let this place die for lack of customers.

We'll be back!
We went to the restaurant because we always use OpenTable when we are out of town. We were not let down! The food was very good - we had a variety of seafood appetizers and a salad for dinner. Everything was very good.

Holy Mackerel was great. Their Fried Lobster was outstanding and the Fish and Chips are the best in the area.
