Interesting menu, creative
Interesting menu, creative and delicious. Would be appreciated if they would begin having a vegan entree regularly. They have a few designated veggie options but often appys only and often nothing of enough substance that is fully vegan - it would be considerate to include some of their good food for this group of humans.
Also though we've come to eat here 3 different times we have only felt beautifully served once. For the 20% tip we leave on the entire bill at the price the bills are here I would expect to receive excellent service - no more forgetting drinks or quick non interactive deliveries of food please.
It's a cozy and comfy space visually - just a bit of tweaking could really hone this restaurant.

We have always loved this restaurant, and are thrilled that they are now taking reservations.

Nice ambiance, small and cozy,
Nice ambiance, small and cozy, friendly staff, loved the food (outstanding bread pudding) but felt it was expensive for the relative small portions.

Had a wonderful dinner on
Had a wonderful dinner on a Saturday night. All the food was delicious, beautifully presented, well seasoned, and portions were perfect. The bread lived up to expectations (must have), and we enjoyed the wine. Service was great - thorough and attentive, but low-key. Will certainly be back.

We had a great evening in Outerlands.
Food is original and prepared with local products.
High prices for small plates however it tastes goods.
Cool ambience - we recommend !!
But do not forget to make a reservation !

My favorite spot
Fresh food straight from farmer's market becomes artisanal fine cuisine all in a down to earth neighborhood beach setting.

Rustic Ocean Dining
This is another great spot that has a well trained Chef opening a value driven local cuisine that literally has the crowds waiting in line-very well thought out menu and drink list-desserts are outstanding as well. I'm glad they now take reservations-excellent and very fun.

Unanticipated but delicious ingredient combinations that are fresh, local, and delicious. Make room for the homemade bread and butter and dessert!

If I had a restaurant ...
This is a great restaurant. I've been going since just after opening and haven't been disappointed on food or service. Love the space and the staff. And you get wonderfully created food served without pretense -- please, use the bread to sop up the short rib juices.

Mussels in pork broth
I had a delicious bowl of mussels in a pork broth. It was on the salty side but absolutely tasty ! There were large chunks of pork, or ham with the mussels and it came with homemade bread that sop up all the broth! Ingredients tasted fresh and flavorful and the broth was clear and clean tasting. I was there with six other friends and we did not feel harried even though there were people waiting outside.

I enjoyed it
Seating was a little cramped, but everything else was wonderful.

This is a surprisingly wonderful place with wonderful food, great servers, and real soul.

Great food but a little expensive
I was very impressed with the originality of the menu, but I thought that the prices were a little high. There were several food combinations and techniques that I will take back to my own cooking to add a bit of extra character.

Worth the trek
I loved this place! The food was fresh, delicious and the flavor combinations in the dishes were perfect. I am usually a short ribs or steak type of diner but ordered the vegetarian entree and it was totally satisfying, hearty and rich. Farm egg!

Awesome. Wasnt a single thing on the menu that I didnt want to try. Felt like I missed out on something by not getting one of each!

Inventive food, mediocre service
Everything about this place was great- the yummy cider, the warm wooden interior, the unique food- except the service. The waiters ignored us for most of the evening, and gave us an unnecessarily hard time when we asked if we could switch tables (to one that was sitting there empty) to move away from the door. Eventually they relented and allowed us to move, but only after much arguing. Anyway, I recommend this place to foodies who are not bothered by spotty service and high prices.

I had heard and read nothing
I had heard and read nothing but great things about Outerlands, so I was delighted to try it. I think the restaurant will benefit from expanding into the space next door. Maybe it's just me, but I thought the tables were kind of cramped (hobbit-like). Someone taller than 6 feet would probably feel like they were sitting at the kids' table. That quibble aside, our waitress was very professional and helpful. I liked that she gave us plenty of time to settle in and look at the menu. My entree, local King salmon, arrived as a beautiful tableau and tasted as good as it looked. My cousin had the soup (sweet potato) and two vegetable sides. Fabulous parsnips, an under-appreciated vegetable. Someone should rethink herbs in every dessert.

Inner peace at Outerlands
A thoughtfully crafted culinary outpost, bravely located where few diners have gone before. An artful cocktail begins your journey along a tasty path through locally sourced, freshly conceived simple dishes. Everything is well constructed for taste and color, with a sophistication that belies the simple output. There's a well curated wine list that suits the menu without stinging the wallet. I can't wait to go back! Walter and Dory

Absolutely wonderful food, made with great care. We were in SF on our honeymoon and ate at several nice places, but this was the best. I would recommend this to anyone who truly appreciates good food.
7/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
We ordered one of everything on the menu (there was four of us) and that was a lot of really good food. This is the best way to experience Outerlands. One dish may be your thing or not, but the combination will provide a series of Wow! moments, and depending on your palette a couple of Not for Me moments.
The thing about the dishes is that they are unique. The ingredients are someone rare, but the combinations and the balance in that perfect bite are worthy of any foodie.
This is a foodie place. If you are a foodie, it's worth the trek off the beaten path.

Great food, mediocre wine
3.5 stars rounding up to four because they now take reservations.
Pros: The food is fantastic - inventive, fresh, delicious. I love that they're now taking reservations - 1 hour waits in the chilly, foggy night are a thing of the past. The beers are quite good. You can usually get parking within a 3 (long) block radius. Lovely homey feel.
Cons: Small portions on the mains. Supplement with sides and bread. But the most disappointing part about Outerlands is the mediocre wine list. Either bring your own or go with beer or cocktails. Which is too bad given how great this place is otherwise and how easy it is to find decent wines in the $9-12/glass category.

Outerlands Pushes Boundaries
On my fourth or fifth visit to Outerlands it is clear the Brett Copper is a culinary force of nature - Uni with New Potatoes, hand cut pasta with barely warmed right of the water striped shrimp, sumac spiced berkshire pork tenderloin and olive oil poached octopus with charred cherries were all winers.

LOVE IT!!--JUST ONE SMALL REQUEST
Absolutely love this place and have eaten here almost since day one!! My only small request is: when they first opened, there was always at least one such dessert that was a traditional pie or cake and they were amazing. As of late, while the desserts are definitely organic marvels like all their food, they sometimes leave me wanting just a good old fashioned dessert. Some of their desserts are so organic they seem to be verging on savory--for example, deconstructed versions of traditional desserts using cilantro, plums, etc, while absolutely divine in their elements, leave me with the feeling I ended the dinner on another salad--rather than the decadent feel you want from a dessert. Just a thought--wouldn't stop me from coming!

Delicious Food on the Edge of Town
Stopped back to visit Outerlands in my old neighborhood... Food was great as usual - the squid dish and carrot and kale salad were my favorite items. The one main dish we ordered (lobster mushrooms?) was a bit overly complex - too many flavors all at once, but still tasty. The bread was as delicious as I remembered it so definitely get the toast!
The place is still busy but does accept reservations now so that's your best bet to avoid a 1-hour wait outside (small dining area means no waiting spot or bar to hang out at). Definitely a cozy ambiance and they cannot cater to large groups so your family reunion may need to try elsewhere. However, for a romantic date night - your foodie significant other will be head over heels!

Wonderful, fresh ingredients put together in original ways.
Some items much more memorable than others.
Lovely staff - especially the hostess - what a personality -
we were seated near where she greeted the guests. There
was no problem that she did not solve - everyone seemed
content even when she could not seat them.

Great food, great service, great venue. And now they take reservations for dinner!

Worth the Trip
Outerlands was a gem. Having dined at some of the "better" restaurants in San Francisco, it was nice to find this place which was far from the main downtown area. We came to San Francisco with friends and they were leery that we were traveling so far from the downtown area to get to this restaurant in the outer Sunset but the effort was worth it and our experience was amazing. Several times the statement of this was one of the best meals we have ever had in San Francisco echoed in our crowd. We were seated by the door and it was a bit drafty but with croqueted throws we were most comfortable. Innovate, creative, delicious food. Definitely worth the effort to get here.

The food was good as expected.
The food was good as expected. But I was quite impressed with the wine list. They carried wines and varietals such as Jacquere from the Savoie and Savagnin from the Jura in France. If you never tried these wines it's time to get adventurous.

Quaint and Fresh
Don't miss this gem. Service great, friendly staff and food fresh and great quality. Creative dishes!

A superb dining experience--excellent food, wine, and service. I have eaten at Outlanders 3 times now, and each time have had a different and imaginative menu. Very creative chef and food is fresh and imaginatively presented. Great bread and butter! And I appreciate being able to make a reservation and not have to stand outside in the cold!

Bring your wallet, not your appetit
I had 3 courses and one side dish. I would rate them from good to very good when it comes to taste. For 2 dishes the presentation was only fair but for the other two it was very good maybe even excellent. It's a small place and I'm sure the all the staff front and back of house does what they can given the limitations. I knew going in that this was not a cheap restaurant but still it was a pretty big bill at the end of the night. Service was very good but getting our second glass of wine took too long. So we lingered uninterrupted & enjoy the wine. (Nice for us but this doesn't help them turn tables and I know there were people waiting.)
One BIG PLUS given the cost -- no charge for splitting dishes! Excellent.

The perfect ending
Outerlands is a rare treat- amazing food presented in a simple, but comforting space. Fantastic cocktails come from a tiny bear while wholesome toast slices are topped with rich cheeses. The duck was perfect, the octopus was light and flavorful and the service was fantastic. I hesitate to say it's a must visit, only because I don't want it to lose its simple magic.

fabulous forward thinking cuisine
Outerlands has a warm interior made of wood creatively utilized as a decorative form. It feels like you are dining in a far off forest somewhere in Scandinavia rather than a beach community on the outer lying area of San Francisco. The food is impeccably prepared displaying an interesting combination of unique flavors. The service is knowledgeable, warm, and unpretentious. I would highly recommend this restaurant for an intimate date, catching up with an old friend, and trying out some new flavors.

Failed to shine at dinner
We started with awesome cocktails & spot on appetizers. Kale salad, uni, & the tomato soup ( which wasn't hot ) were all executed well. The entrees included Cod and Pork. The cod was bland & the corn fritters that accompanied the fish were luke warm. The pork was overcooked so you lost the juiciness that pork delivers. The flavor profiles were good but with the meat being tough it was hard to enjoy. We had a fancy rice pudding that had their version of a homemade rice crispy in it. The crunch was good but the flavors were muted. Overall, I wouldn't rush back for dinner. The service was adequate but nothing to write home about. To come out to 45th Ave and wait in the lines that this places demands the food need to be elevated a few notches.

We went for my husband's birthday--we both thought of Outerlands right away. We wanted (and got) great food that was genuinely prepared and served by people who cared about the food as more than sustenance. This may sound airy-fairy but it's true; I felt we were being nourished. We had the duck breast (the largest I've ever had in a restaurant) and accompanied it with the green beans. The flavors were complex but not overwrought. For dessert we had the monkeybread which had fresh Asian pears, toasted almonds, coconut, and cream. It was sublime and delightful. The setting is a funky, plain vibe and suits the food and the Sunset neighborhood.

It was a bit of a haul to Sunset from the City, but it was worth every Duck, Octopus, Black Cod bite of it.

Can't wait to go back!
Amazing!!! Food was creative, and flavorful with nice sized portions. Cocktails are delicious and inventive and the ambience is very comforting and relaxed. I can't wait to go back! Food was SO good.

We were rushed between our
We were rushed between our appetizer and main course. It was intense and not relaxing, not the kind of experience I was seeking. Perhaps it's because we chose an early seating. It made sense to do so after watching the sun go down on beautiful Funston Beach.
11/12/2013 4:00:00 PM
I think I dreamt about the sunchokes, they were that good. The soup was also a winner - a good-size portion, amazing flavors and warm on a cold outer sunset night. The bread is a must - try it with one of the cheese. The only downside to Outerlands is that the wines by the glass are mediocre at best. Opt for beer or cocktails, though and you'll have an incredible experience overall.
I wish they didn't ask for a credit card to hold the a reservation.
Parking is sometimes a bit tough but we've always had good luck one block over on Kirkham.
We'll definitely be back.

What a great place. And the food is remarkable. The turnip soup was lovely. Carmelized sunchokes were beyond wonderful. And the seafood stew was perfect.
