This place was stellar. The service was great -- I showed up quite a bit earlier than the rest of my party and the staff was super friendly, checking on me a few times to make sure I had all I needed instead of making me wait since my party wasn't all there. The ambience is incredible, and I was so impressed with the presentation of the whiskey flights and the food.
Great spot, definitely going back.

Go here. They asked if we wanted bacon and jalapeños on our Mac and cheese. If that doesn't indicate greatness I don't know what to tell you.

Hogwash Rose and Ribs
Southpaw was recommended by a friend of mine and I absolutely loved it! Fancy food meets real BBQ! Loved the drink specials, loved the bourbon flights, and love the fact you have a dry rose (Hogwash) with BBQ. Somehow warm weather, dry rose and great BBQ work really well!

Friendly, accommodating staff
I called the day of the reservation and asked to change it from 6 people at 5:30 to 10 people at 6:00, and they were incredibly accommodating. We had a great time; all of us were hankering for BBQ, and Southpaw hit the spot! The mac'n'cheese was perfect, the pulled pork was tender and flavorful, and the drinks and beer list were a very pleasant surprise. The mushrooms and sweet potato salad were so-so, but the meat and multiple bbq sauces made up for that.

Lived up to the hype
This spot was recommended by a southern chef that is serious about his barbeque... The food was delicious: dry rubbed pork ribs, fried green tomatoes, coleslaw, fried pickles, hush puppies, mac and cheese and bacon mushrooms; the servers were courteous; the decor was comfortable and welcoming; the prices reasonable.
Absolutely look forward to going again soon, but this time try the 4-course Chef's tasting menu!!

Good BBQ in the Mission
I've eaten at Southpaw a few times now. I've also been to most of the BBQ places in the City. Southpaw is my favorite do far. There are great Happy Hour drink and food choices, a full bar with an emphasis on good whiskies (and knowledgable bartenders to support it) and good BBQ and sides. This is just a well rounded place that I keep returning to for the service, the food, and the classes on brewing, pickle, and sausage making.

all the food is good, but any place with pickles like that makes it onto my list of 'yes'. love the beet salad, love the mac and cheese. i have eaten the brisket both times and it was better the first time...a little dry the second time, but still good. the ice box pie was UNREAL. soooooooooooo good. peanut butter pie also good...but that ice box pie was next level. will definitely return!

Love the fried pickles!!
This place is great! all the sides are really yummy. I really enjoyed the pork ribs. I will be back!!

Loved Southpaw! The service was very friendly, the food was GREAT! Ambiance was relaxed. Would definitely go back.

Several different BBQ plates including excellent Tri-tip and pulled pork. The Beef Ribs were a bit overdone, but the others were great. What really makes this place are the sides and the drinks. They have delicious sides including grits, macaroni, multiple types of beans, rice and beans, chopped brussel sprouts, etc. The drink menu includes a couple beers brewed on site and a large selection of whiskeys.

Loved it! Great ambiance, great food, great time all around. I would love to come back sooner than later!

loved every minute!
A dear friend and I get together annually to celebrate our August birthdays and never know where to go. I'd been wanting to try this for ages. Our waitress was personable and professional as she steered us to delicious cocktails with imaginative names (and I don't even drink!) She recommended dinner options and again we were delighted with her suggestions. We even went whole hog and shared a slice of peanut butter pie. Over the top! Was glad not to have gone with my boyfriend (who doesn't drink and doesn't eat red meat) and would definitely recommend this place for anyone interested in upscale BBQ!

One of our favourite places
One of our favourite places to go as a group - as long as you make a reservation as the place is popular. Staff is friendly and fun; drinks are good and tasty; wonderful choices for food from 'shared plates' which can easily be one's entree to sides to actual entrees. Chips with habenaro sauce is most definitely a winner!!!! Easily accessible by BART and MUNI.

Solid BBQ in the Mission
We have a solid but not spectacular experience. Food was overall quite good, but also very pricey. The brisket was nice and fatty, although they gave the option of a leaner cut which my wife appreciated. The sides we had were good but not mind blowing. The mac & choose was full of cheese but, and I don't say this often, too cheesy. If I'm not mistaken, one of the cheeses used was a blue that completely overpowered the other cheeses. My wife enjoyed her sazerac, and I liked my cocktail quite a bit; it was a spicey house cocktail whose name escapes me at the moment.
Overall, the food was solid, the bar was great, and I would probably return. The only thing holding me back is the price, but since when isn't that the case in SF?

Best BBQ in San Francisco.
Best BBQ in San Francisco. And I am from North Carolina! Only BBQ I will eat in the city. Also, great beer and whiskey lists.

I'd had their food brought in for a company event and really loved it. So, had to visit the home base. My friends and I really enjoyed our dinner. It's a pretty loud room, so be prepared for that - and it was packed on a Wednesday night. Fun place.
9/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
Everything I ordered was great (tri tip, potatoes, corn and hush puppies).
10/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
Definitely worth the price! The fried chicken was fabulous, the hush puppies very tasty, and it was difficult choosing ONLY 2 sides to go with the entrée! Definitely go with friends so you can taste all of them, and be prepared to be stuffed to the gills when you leave. And definitely have a drink - had one of the best lemon drops ever!!!

AS always, loved it here. SO yummy. SO amazing. I will definitely be back!

I took a friend out of a birthday dinner. He is originally from North Carolina and he was very impressed with the quality of food and the authentic taste. The portion size of the main dish is quite large. We started out with the warm potato chips with blue cheese. OMG they were amazing. He got the pulled pork but had to take some of it home due to the portion. I got the buttermilk chicken which was 2 large legs and thighs. We both could not finish the food on our trays...yes trays...no plates.
We were told Thurs-Sunday 7pm to closing it's packed.
The only thing my friends was surprised at was the lack of Sweet-tea...a very southern beverage.
We will definitely go back & definitely make room for dessert.

My boyfriend and I have been to Southpaw a handful of times and are never disappointed. We got a reservation booked about an hour in advance which was very fortunate as they were extremely packed when we arrived. One thing that always amazes me is that not matter how packed the place is, they are always timely and attentive with service. We have never had an issue with service which I can not say for most restaurants during a busy Friday night. The food, as always, was mouth watering and we found ourselves loath to leave a single bite left over. I highly recommend to those who like barbecue and southern style food, or really anyone for that matter. We recommend it often.

duck fat squished potatoes
We made a reservation for two. I think they only have one table for two otherwise it is bar stool seating. With reservation, we waited over 30 minutes--reservations for 2 are meaningless even for early dinner seating. They seem to have reservations for larger groups--several tables of 6 or 8 people. Food&drinks were creative. The 'dinosaur' beef bone was great. Turkey leg was terrific, albeit overwhelming as it is huge & meaty. The side dishes made this bbq special: brussel sprouts were torn up into the bacon(?) cream sauce, rosemary potatoes with duck fat were squished making them flavorful and easy to eat, okra was deep fried and crispy, cole slaw was tasty--I inhaled it, but not memorable. Staff were very accommodating once seated.

The food was awesome and original. Things keep popping up on the menu that you don't see anywhere else and the place tortures you with good food. I was so full, but I desperately wanted to keep eating so I could continue to enjoy the amazing flavors. During this last visit we had the brisket, fried chicken, duck fat potatoes, okra, mac n cheese, brussel sprouts- I can't even remember what else we all got, but we couldn't have enough of it!

BBQ AT IT'S BEST
Great modern BBQ, excellent waitstaff, fine beer selection, and massive bourbon selection. Good for groups up to about 10 - make reservations. Casual dining at it's best.
