A place to meet after work.
Great to meet friends after work. Food and service were good!

happy hout to dinner transition
The bar is rocking on a Friday night. I think, am I going to be able to eat dinner with this emphasis on "din"? The hostess leads us to the dining area, where the noise level is more attuned to flirty conversation than boisterous flirtation. I will look forward to new menu items as they settle in, and in the meantime GET THE GUILTY FRIES (maybe to share).

Everything was excellent! The server we had--unfortunately, can't remember his name--is probably the best server EVER. This review is for dinner, but I also had the same server for lunch a different day and he was fantastic!
We had the following:
Pork trotter and cheek fritter
Chuck roast (definitely the favorite of the night)
Pan seared yellowtail
Sticky toffee pudding
All for $96 (plus tip!), which is very reasonable considering the amount of food!

Try the Fries
Tribune Tower's poutine version of fries topped with fondue and pulled pork is indulgent and delicious. A nice addition to Oakland's culinary scene.

Breaking News! Tribune Tavern a HIT
If you like the Chop Bar, you'll love this new gem in Downtown Oakland. The drinks: excellent and inventive. The FancyPants is a wonderful rye drink that looks fancy in its special glass. Beers were good, although they're ironing out issues with their drafts.
The food: again, yummy and inventive. The fried chicken was amazing. Thin batter and juicy, almost as good as mine. The Shepard's Pie was lush with chunks of beef and fresh peas, topped with creamy potatoes. The burger, a blend of brisket and chuck, should've been a winner because it was perfectly cooked at medium but had a strange mouth-feel and wasn't juicy enough.
Although a large space, that quickly fills up, you never struggle to hear your companions. A real treat.

Food = good. Desserts & drinks = ♥♥
Brought my father for his birthday and father's day on the recommendation from a friend. Did not disappoint! I'm-house made ice cream was to die for. The drink mixologists are genius. The decor is beautiful and the staff are sweet and helpful.

The Tribune Tavern is a great addition to the neighborhood. Food and service have been consistently good.

Good for Oakland
This partner group is working hard to get good food, fun spots in Oakland. We need this badly; the city gets an undeserved rep, and places like this will change people's minds.

Great food and amazing drinks--don't miss the guilty fries or the pork belly with currants!!
The service is a little uneven--perhaps the waitstaff is unexperienced, but we are hoping it will improve. We experienced some of the same issues as in the other reviews--bread for an appetizer didn't arrive until partway through dinner (when the appetizer had been cleared) and no apology was offered, and dishes were cleared before the whole party had finished eating.
That said, the food is really good--this was our second visit so it's not enough to keep us away.

As a former newspaper employee, I was intrigued by the location. The food and service were good...a little noisy toward the end because some staff came by to celebrate. A large group was having a great time, couples had quiet time at the bar, and the patio looked inviting. A security guard was very visible. The menu had some adventurous items and new takes on comfort food. I would go back.

Bar food is trending...
Tribune Tavern is in the sweet spot! The wines on tap (including local favorite Rockwall) and their artfully crafted specialty cocktails (especially the bourbon and whiskey drinks) are delicious!
Have the Guilty Fries with a cheesy gravy and pulled pork! Share them with friends and you won't feel so guilty..
Recently had the ribeye and its was so wonderful it's grilled, smoky deliciousness melted in my mouth!
Been there several times and will keep going back!

Great new find! Fun history here..
With limited options for a glass of Chardonnay but excellent spirits choices. I really enjoyed the Man About Town.
My date and I shared several small plates: aragula salad with peaches, goat cheese toast and soup. All were yummy!
Only three stars for ambience because we were inside and very cold. Doors to outside seating were open near us. We did not have the benefit of the heat lamps the patio patrons enjoyed.

Loud bar, intimate dining
We were skeptical about being able to hold a conversation at dinner when we arrived during happy hour. The indoor dining are is at the back of the space, and it is much quieter.
We have been there twice now and have found the service to be attentive and well-informed.
7/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Glad we gave this restaurant a try.
We stopped by for our first visit, and were very pleased. It's a great addition to the neighborhood, and we will be back.

Great new place in downtown Oakland
How nice to have another very good option downtown, where choices are slim, especially one that serves until 10:00 during the week and 11:00 on weekends. It is in the lobby of the Tribune building, and utilizes the old press materials to create a very nice ambiance. The goat cheese toast w/vegetables was excellent. My husband's burger was also very good, except the fries tasted like the oil was a bit overused. My fried chicken was tasty, but the crust was way overcooked, almost burnt, but it was still very juicy; the accompanying chow chow was nothing special. Try their own made cola; delicious! Good and reasonably priced wines by the glass. Our server was very nice and attentive, as were all the staff. We will definitely be back.
7/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Form follows function
The open bar area is nicely separate from the more private dining room in back. Side booths more cozy and front window tables have views. Interior has urban warmth from history as Tribune Building. Food: inventive yet simultaneously comfortingly familiar. Divided into ""big" and "small" offering a range of options including veggie
The fried chicken is moist and crisp; the soup with greens delish. Carbo splurge--get bread with the soup, the butter adds a decadently homey touch.
Plenty of beers to stand up to the pub food; the food not heavy, despite the menu's tilt towards typical British fare.
Whatever you do, order the Welsh Rarebit. An alluringly creamy cheese sauce gently blankets a crispy toast square; you will want to lick the plate.
7/22/2013 12:00:00 AM
First visit for lunch was outdoors on a sunny afternoon. It was too cool outside for dinner but had a chance to have the fried chicken dinner which was excellent. This time the kale salad was not as tasty as the one we had for lunch.
7/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
The menu is eclectic but fun for a tavern type place. Atmosphere is great and the place is lively. Excellent wait staff.
7/30/2013 12:00:00 AM
As a native Oaklander, I am happy that we have kept a part of Oakland's history!
8/2/2013 12:00:00 AM
On our visit Tribune tavern touched all the right bases: menu variety (veal saltimbocca at a tavern!), food quality, service (knowledgeable servers) and atmosphere. We'll be back.
8/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great meal on a Sunday afternoon @ 2. Tool my dad and the family as my dad was a copy boy at
the Tribune in the 50's! Food was delicious. Excellent burgers/fries and the best homemade scones
with plumb jam. I had some big salad which was huge and full of great stuff, roasted cauliflower, small
potatoes, cheddar cheese, walnuts...yum! Staff was super nice and friendly but forgotten daughters order
so it came late. Also had to be reminded about our scones. Very quiet on a late Sunday afternoon but
looks like it would be full of energy in the evening.
8/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
This was my first time here and we went with a group for a work lunch. Reading the menu, I wasn't to thrilled about going here. I ordered a burger and my friend ordered the fried chicken sandwich. Both were really good!! The restaurant is very spacious and it didn't feel cramped inside. I really liked the bar area, which makes for a great happy hour one day.
I would come back again.

Best place in downtown Oakland for lunch. Highly recommend.

Excellent time at Tribune Tavern
Have only been there once for dinner with a group of Five. The food, atmosphere, wine , and service exceeded my expectations. We all thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Can't wait to go back!
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great for Lunch
Two of us had hamburgers, cooked exactly as ordered, and good quality. The fries were also quite good. Friendly and efficient wait staff. Decent draft beer. Very pleasant experience on a sunny afternoon - we sat inside to avoid the potential for panhandlers.

Have been here a couple of times for lunch and continue to be impressed. the food has been generally excellent. The Bar looks like a happening spot and I would expect in the evenings it is a great place to go after work.
Have not tried dinner but on the basis of the lunches, I would expect it to be a great choice.
8/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
GREAT services, GOOD food.
Food was very good. Yellow tail tuna moist and delicious. Unfortunately only steak choice was rib-eye, but I believe this changes as it was listed as "featured". My date really wanted a filet. Arugula salad was a delight except for the rock hard peach slices included (should have just skipped them). The goat cheese toast with pasilla peppers was an absolute star.
The service was refreshingly good, attentive. I mean really good. Nice!
8/28/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great new place in Oakland - good beers and burger. Guilty fries awesome.
8/31/2013 12:00:00 AM
Food was great but one of guests did not enjoy the Cobb Salad. Other than that - everything was great!
9/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
Tribune Tavern is top notch and now one of Oakland's best restaurants. So many good things about this place--great outdoor seating, best waiting area, lounge of any restaurant ever, beautiful bar, specially at night, and of course good food. Should be on everyone's list!
9/6/2013 12:00:00 AM
All about the Guilty Fries
Big space with lots of tables, so should be easy to roll in and grab a table quickly. A bit loud, but some might say energetic. Had a couple of drinks that were pretty decent. Great menu, and food selection. Entrees we got were ok to good, but the best things we had were the guilty fries, which come with pulled pork and some kind of cheese sauce and was amazing...same with the ice cream sandwich for dessert. Service was a bit slow, indifferent, tho the hostess and bussers were surprisingly nice and cordial.
Definitely will check it out again.

New energy 4 great old building
Have wanted to visit since it opened. Great food (Pork Trotter Crepinettes & hubby had the Tavern Burger) & lots on the menu I'd like to go back & try. Charming, warm & welcoming hostess, server gave great info on the dinner & bar selections. Bit on the noisy side but the patio was open & a perfect night to dine out!

Smooth for happy hour table of 10
Every one of the 10 at our table enjoyed the food, drink, vibe, and convenient-for-BART-commuter location, and is excited to return. Staff were very accommodating, prompt, friendly. A good mix of people frequent the Tavern; for example, we were a group of the 50-65 age range, but there were a lot of young professionals there, too. Burgers are huge and were tasty and perfectly cooked to order. Kale salad was great. The fries are excellent and addictive.
9/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
The hustle and bustle
Been here a few times, but this was the first time not for happy hour. really enjoyed the meal, the food was as described in the menu (no surprise changes, subtractions, sauces, etc.). Place was rocking on a Friday night.
Despite the crowd and the noise, service was great.

Dinner at The Tribune Tavern
Highly energetic!! The menu has a mix of British Pub food like Shepard's Pie, Bangers and Mash, and Fries. Also in the menu includes American and French inspired food. From Fried Chicken to Frisee Salad with Figs and Duck Confit. You can also order steak for only $36. Overall, very good experience at the Tribune Tavern. Great selection of wine, beer, and spirits. Great place to go to after work to dine.
9/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
Not your average tavern
This is the upscale version of a British pub. The food is much more flavorful and thoughtful. The ambiance is more like an after-work watering hole. By work I mean office work. I'd think twice before strolling in here in my torn up weekend jeans.
The Guilty Fries sounded amazing, and were. I'm always a sucker for some pulled pork though. The Bangers and Mash weren't the best I'd ever had but decent. I tried some of my friend's Shepherd's Pie which was well seasoned and delicious. The goat cheese cheesecake was sumptuous.
They have a good selection of local beers here which is refreshing. For the number of craft breweries we have in the bay, I'm frequently disappointed in the selection in restaurants.
9/25/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is a fun place to go for a casual evening out. The staff is uniformly happy, accommodating, friendly and helpful. The food, though not for those on a health kick, is yummy & unique - bar food with a twist. There is an extensive selection of wines and beers to choose from . The servers did not miss a beat. Terrific place!
9/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Lunch menu was very good, Pork sandwich was moist, flavorful and savory! Root Beer was to die for!
10/3/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great burger, lousy fries
The good: fine Shepherd's Pie. Tuna/Egg sandwich open face, marvelous housemade bread, exquisite baby arugula side--a perfect summer variant of Nicoise salad. The burger was marvelous, magnificent--almost as good as Vault 164/SMateo (needs a brioche bun for that extra step up). The bad: service amateur (why write down a cup of soup if you only forget about it?). Kitchen painfully slow: took over half-hr between starter and entrees altho place was almost empty and we were there early. Fries are absolutely terrible; dry as dust and inedible when cold. Pork on poutine was tasty but grossly oversalted. Parking difficult here; noise is ear-splitting. But yes, we'll come back for that burger and pie--yummy!

The place was great for my group of 12 to celebrate a couple birthdays. We enjoyed the food, it was great and the restaurant has a very cool vibe to it.

Good Pre-Show spot For Dinner
We went to a show at the Fox just up Telegraph a few blocks from the a Tribune Tavern. This was a perfect place for a nice meal, offering a little bit of something for everyone before a short walk up to the Fox. If you are going to be in downtown Oakland for dinner, it's not a bad choice.
10/11/2013 12:00:00 AM
Nice layout, dark paneling. Recalls the old newsy days. Very quiet the Saturday lunch that we were there, but the BART strike was going on and it was a beautiful day, so most folks were probably out on their bicycles. Great place to meet friends. Bar drinks were imaginative and good. Easy location and parking on the weekends. Appreciate the revitalization of downtown Oakland.

Downtown Oakland has a new winner
Great spot for dinner before heading over toi the Paramount or The Fox. Interesting menu, good wine list and a very solid bar.

Eat Where the Journalists Eat
I loved the Tribune Tavern - the place has a great old fashioned men's club feeling about it. Superb cocktails made by someone who really knew what they were doing, food was good enough and the staff could not have been nicer. I will definitely make this one,of my go to places in Oakland.

Great place to have a nice meal
We've been to the Tribune Tavern a couple of times once for dinner and once for brunch. The food both times was very good and the service was excellent. It's not located in the best neighborhood in Oakland but it is close to BART and in a very nice art-deco building in down town Oakland. I plan on making this one of my regular hang outs.
11/9/2013 4:00:00 PM
Bravo, Tribune Tavern!
First off, a lot of love goes out to Brad the awesome bartender. He was knowledgeable about both the bar and the food selections. Steered us in a great direction and we couldn't have been happier. The food was delicious and the beer was icy cold and tasty. (Nice selection on tap!)
I will make this a regular stop for lunch, happy hour, and dinner. I love it when Oakland has a great place to spend time...Tribune Tavern is a gem.
11/14/2013 4:00:00 PM
Delicious with great service.
We are regular diners at Tribune Tavern and have written a few stories about them for a local website. It's been a very solid dinner spot and we love the cocktail menu. Our server this time was just incredibly warm, funny, and enthusiastic about the menu and the drinks. Mind you, we've had several good servers at Tribune, but C. was a great guide and host.
Our guest, who had not been to TT before, loved the cod/chowder dish she ordered and the wine she chose. We all love that the sides and starters are highlights. We order the kale salad almost every time and enjoy items from all parts of the menu.
11/20/2013 4:00:00 PM
My family went for brunch to celebrate a birthday. All of us enjoyed the food, especially the polenta pancake. It was a great experience for our first time. Not many people at 2 on a Sunday.
