The menu choices are ample, especially the tapas. I particularly liked the shrimp in garlic sauce. The asparagus salad (no white available, but the green was just fine) was excellent. I love lamb and the chops didn't disappoint. The ham and cod fish croquettes were grease free and delicious. The waiter recommended a wine (by the glass) that was just perfect. I'll definitely go back and try more of their dishes.

New York trip
We wanted a nice place for tapas, we found this restaurant on opentable. The food, service and wine were all great. It felt like stepping into a welcoming home! We even took my 6 year old twin girls. There were no other kids but it was fine and the staff were all very friendly. I like that it was quieter and had a real neighborhood feel. I would go back when we visit new York again.

Solidly Reliable Spanish Cuisine
Well prepared traditional Spanish cuisine, nice selection of Tapas and main courses, friendly service, reasonably priced wine list with a variety of Spanish reds, whites, and Cavas, quiet enough for conversation but with a low-level "buzz" so the dining room has a lively feeling.

All of the food was first rate
We shared the mussels with white wine and garlic as an appetizer. This was an excellent dish.
I had the trout stuffed with ham and potatoes. I could not find the ham, but the trout was simply exquisite. A perfect piece of fish.
My wife had the seafood paella, which she enjoyed very much.
The Basque desert sampler was just okay.
We ordered wine by the glass and were not impressed, but we don't know much about how to select Spanish wines.
The service was very accommodating and just attentive enough through most of the evening. At the end, when we were ready for the check, everyone seemed to be paying attention to some regulars and they seemed to forget about us.

We traveled to Spain last fall, so we're primed for good food that would remind us of the trip. Alcala did not disappoint. Very reminiscent of restaurants in Madrid. Delicious food and dignified service. Will go back.

Taste of Spain
Quaint little neighborhood gem offering traditional Spanish cuisine in both full plates and Tapas. Found the best approach was to start the evening with a pitcher of Sangria. While in the sharing mood we continued with several Tapas and shared two full dinner plates. Service was top notch and very personable. Truly reflective of a Spanish dining experience!

Delicious, close to our hotel. Excellent wine recommendation.

Excellent tapas. For five people, we also supplemented the tapas with two entrees--a vegetable platter, which was a welcome complement to the meal since there were not so many vegetable dishes, and the meat paella, which was delicious. Everything else--especially the chorizo with red wine and onions--was delicious. And very pleasant ambience--small and quiet.

I would just like to comment on the efficient manner in which my reservation was acknowledged. I asked for a quiet corner, and received just that. The food and service were excellent!

Alcala has a convenient location
Alcala has a convenient location in Midtown with comfortable deco, dependably excellent menu, great selection of Spanish wines, and attentive servers. We try to go there as often a possible on our trips to NY.

Very enjoyable lunch and plan to return one evening for dinner. Did not check out the wine list this time but will in future.

This restaurant has an excellent menu and outstanding service. It is particularly recommended for a business lunch since unlike many in mid-town, it is quiet enough to hear your colleagues. I

Looking for a fare from Spain?
This is the place to have the best spanish from Spain meal

Midtown was fortunate in keeping this gem of Spanish cooking when it had to move out of its premises on East 46th St near Fist Ave. Now at East 44th near Second Ave, it has none of its flavor & excellent food & service.

Good Spanish cuisine
went there with a friend. Had some excellent tapas, especially the garlic shrimp. The wine was excellent too. My friend had the steak which he felt was very good. My fish was a bit fishy. Overall we liked the place. The ambience was nice. It is a quiet place fit for conversation.

I have eaten here so many times it is like a second home. Had events here as well for a few organizations. The food is always delicious. It is a little noisy when very busy , which fortunately, it was.

Restaurant was in a good location, walking distance to Metro North.
The table while close to the one next to us, was next to a wall.
Food overall was very good with the trout entree outshining the appetizer.
Price high however most tables ordered the price fixe.
Service while attentive, was hard to understand the waiter's thick accent.

Great time at Alcalá
It's a great restaurant, and I'm happy it has been able to find new premises in the neighborhood (Midtown) when it moved out of its 46th St (near First Avenue) location. The food and the service are excellent! I recommend it! The noise level is moderate, even at busy hours (lunch).

Another very good meal
Alcala does not dissapoint. Although being from out of town, I only am able to eat here once or twice a year, the meals and service are always very good. Every thing I have ordered here has been very enjoyable. (You do have to like garlic if you order any of the dishes indicating it is one of the ingrediants.) While service on my recent visit seemed a little slower than usual, that was not a real detraction. I especially appreciated the assistance of the staff in helping my guest, an elderly lady, who has mobility difficulties, even assisting when we left and accompanying us to a taxi. I look forward to my next trip to New York and another visit to Alcala.
