The food was amazing, but portions are a bit small, especially if you share as they suggest. Overall, a great place I will go back to and refer friends to.

I love this restaurant
This was my 2nd time at Smallwares and I'm sure not close to my last. The food is FANTASTIC and utterly unique. I can't wait to go back and try some more.

I loved the service and the food. Our waitress was so helpful and patient.....great experience.
The salmon app. was a bit on the really tiny side for the price. The duck and hanger steak were melt in your mouth and if you try nothing else, order the chicken lollipops!

Lots of flavor
Smallswares' tag line is "inauthentic Asian food." So if you are expecting real Asian food, go elsewhere. But if you are looking dynamic, fresh combinations of flavor that include different pan-Asian ingredients, this is your spot. Being Asian myself, I can be a bit nitpicky about Asian fusion, but this cool spot impressed me with its creativity. I also expected with a name like smallwares and its menu for small plates, I would leave hungry. But their small plates are surprisingly sizable and I left very full.
Will be returning!

Superb, unusual menu
On this first visit we had a scant hour before a play to squeeze in a meal. It was a great meal from start to finish. The interior is vibrant, very pretty but also approachable and casual. Our server accommodated our schedule down to the minute. And above all, the food was amazing: complex flavor and texture combinations, elegant presentations. Of particular note: oysters; prawns in shell; short ribs; potatoes with roe. We will be back in a flash.

A GREAT Meal!
We LOVED Smallwares! We went on a Friday night at the last minute and had no trouble getting a table. The food was so good, very unique flavors and exciting combinations. Would definitely recommend it highly and will go back to try more of their delicious food. The fried kale with bacon is a must as are the white beans.

Great fun. Great food.
We (4 of us) had a great experience. Our wait person gave us helpful info and advice and was quite pleasant. The oysters were superb. The pork belly, salad with rhubarb, crab soup, spicy noodles were very good. The potatoes with roe and the fried kale were exceptional! We had fun sharing all the plates -- very social. We'll be back.

Exotic made accessible
Delicious combinations - unusual choices turn out to be yummy together. Healthy but not slavishly so. Asian condiments and vegetable selections work well to add lightness to some western mainstays.

A gastronomic find
After much searching to find a decent restaurant on a Saturday evening at short notice, I hit on this gem, not having any experience of Portland dining. It was a pleasure from start to finish, with an extremely helpful server. Our variety of dishes was just amazing . We loved the halibut, pork, chicken lollipops and beef, but really there was nothing we didnt enjoy. I wish I could find this concept and standard of cooking in more places. Portions were perfect to share even between 4 and we had a very nice red wine, dessert and coffee. Lovely evening.

It's always fun to introduce a friend to Smallwares; they are always delighted.
7/20/2013 12:00:00 AM
This is a great restaurant that is easy to overlook. The fried kale was outstanding as were the chicken lollipops. We will definitely be back!

Unique and Excellent Food
Loved the food and will return to try more plates in the future. Highly recommended for groups looking for a good time that enjoy East Asian / fusion-style food.

on our way to PDX to catch the red-eye with time to burn. found smallwares from nytimes write up and couldnt have been happier.
we settled into three rounds of small plates that dazzled paired with local beer and wine. of note were the scallop sashimi, spot prawns, fried kale, short ribs and tuna special. all of these were amazing.
worth the trip!

I took my family to Smallwares for my wife's birthday. It was our second visit and we simply couldn't have enjoyed it more. The food was unsurpassed and well presented. The staff was excellent and supported the enjoyment of a great meal. Smallwares is now officially our favorite restaurant in Portland.
7/26/2013 12:00:00 AM
We shared numerous dishes...each one delightful and unique. We like to go out to eat food we can't make ourselves.
Smallwares is a great place to accommodate our desire for "asian cuisine with a twist!"

A great food find!
Imagine Asia meets tapas. Ox tails in curry, fried kale that's like tempura, only better. Clams and octopus. OK, you're getting the idea. Must try!

Great find in Portland
Creative combinations of food. Fusion that works. Staff and waitress were attentive and respectful of one of our groups' allergy to onions. In fact, the server solicited the chef's recommendations and alterations of dishes on the menu.
We had seen the NYTimes review the Sunday before and made a reservation based on it. Our group was in town for a meeting.
Although staff was proactive getting a cab for us back to our hotel, it did take a while.
Reminded me of Austin eateries. Ambience and creative fusions.
For each in our group of 4, this was our first trip to Portland. Thanks for making it memorable.

Good stuff, but...
Most items were decent to very good, but I can't stand places that practically refuse to let you dictate what order you get your food. And, when the order in which the dishes comes out is kind of whacked out, in terms of flavors and intensity, it is less than ideal for us. One item was amazing, one was totally wrong, everything else was very good.
Service was friendly, though it took awhile to get our initial drinks. When it's a hot day, which it was that day, you want a cool drink right away. I think she forgot to order them, or they sat at the bar awhile, and she forgot to pick them up...When that happens at a restaurant, especially at the beginning, it kind of taints the rest of the experience, but it was all fine.

This is food that you can't
This is food that you can't really get anywhere else in Portland. Both times I've been here the quality and creativity of the food has been excellent. The menu changed drastically since the last visit, and while I was slightly sad I couldn't have some of the same dishes, every new one I tried was outstanding so I can't complain.
I brought my 20 month old son and the staff is very accommodating and attentive. He also likes the food, which is a massive plus.

One of 2013's Best Meals
My family group of four had a fantastic meal at Small Wares
on 8/10/13. We shared a wide range of dishes and
each had were executed perfectly with layers of
flavor and texture. The menu also does great job of
combining east and west.
The dishes are too long to recite here, but
spot Prawns, cherries, yuzu kosho, shiso and
pickled shallots is an example.
As the long time President of a large culinary
school, I give Smallwares an "A"!

Excellent food and great service
This place is a gem. The small plates can easily be shared between two people. The selection is varied and EVRYTHING we picked was fantastic. They had a Salmon Tartar on special which was awesome, th eoxtail was fantastic and so was teh Mapo. Corcage fee at $15 is reasonable an dthe staff is very helpful. Definitely will be going back.

Unique fare with taste
Not just trying to be unique but delivering on delicious flavor combinations as well.
8/13/2013 12:00:00 AM
One of the reasons I joined OpenTable was to find interesting, but otherwise obscure restaurants when I travel. Unless you live in this neighborhood I suspect you may not know this place exists. The food was eclectic. Unusual flavor and ingredient pairings. Very interesting wine list simply because there were many bottles you won't see other places. It all works wonderfully together. Well worth the trip. I will go back the next time I'm in Portland.
8/17/2013 12:00:00 AM
Limited, but very creative menu. Everything we had was excellent.
8/19/2013 5:00:00 PM
We had stopped at smallwares about a year ago and enjoyed some small plates outside. We then read about a kids menu and decided to take our children along for an early dinner. While there is no published kids menu, children can choose from rice or noodles, with or without broth and add chicken or vegetables. My wife and I opted for the more adult fare and started with deep fried kale with bacon, stuffed padron peppers and we each had a noodle dish ( the pork belly ramen for me and the crab noodle soup for Staci). A wonderful balance in the soup. The only item lacking was the kale that came as too much food compared to the description. Kale still tasted fresh with a light dusting of tempura. The ramen was cooked to perfection.
8/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
Original and wonderful
Smallwares is such an unusual dining experience it is hard to classify. The tag line for the restaurant is " inauthentic Asian fusion". That gives the first time diner a starting place but it does not begin too describe the uniqueness of the dishes.
The spot prawn dish is so elegant in its presentation, that one is reluctant to disturb the artistic plating - but dig in- its delicious !
The mapo dofu is so luxurious-silky, salty and warming that I would love to have one delivered to my home while I'm sitting on my couch wrapped in a cozy blanket.
This is a restaurant worth discovering!

Interesting & fun food/drinks
The Octopus plate was cooked to perfection and delicious. I usually don't like sweet foofoo drinks but decided to order the Mai Tai and it was perfect - not too sweet. The dinner and drinks were a little overpriced. If it were a little cheaper we would go back more often.
8/23/2013 12:00:00 AM
Love this place!
Go with a group so you can order more of the small plates! Dined with group of five, we ordered 80% of the menu, and were only disappointed with two dishes. They have a great sake selection and really interesting wines as well. Service was friendly, ambience nice(a bit dark-bring your readers). Skip the crispy kale and chicken lollipops-the coating is not crispy, not tempura, just weird.
8/29/2013 12:00:00 AM
Creative food, perfect for sharing
We love this place! Order a variety of different dishes throughout the night and share them with your friends. She comes up with some crazy mixes of foods and flavors that you'd never think of putting together - but they work!
9/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
Our entire party was happy with the service, wine and especially the food. Each smallplate was good some of the plates were totally delicious: like the Momokoko(sp), Seared Tuna, spot prawns and the fried kale. We also enjoyed the wine list which had choices to pair with the menu items.

Smallwares big on Taste
My wife and I tried Smallwares for the first time. We were blown away by the bold flavors and spicy combinations of food. The Padron peppers were especially good. The clams in black bean sauce also exceeded expections. We will be back.

To die for
There are no words for the meal we ate at Smallwares. We got the tasting menu and set our price. The tempura kale with fish sauce and bacon blew my mind. The egg custard mapo dofu was beautiful. The custard had the texture of silken tofu with a deep rich flavor. They had the best octopus salad I have had in years. Each morsel of octopus was so tender you could cut it with a look. I highly recommend this place to everyone. The price is decent and the alcohol list is done by flavor profile so it is easy to pick something out if you're not sure what you want.

Food was wonderful and fun. Great place to share many small dishes

A great surprise!
Had heard from a friend it was great place. Parking wasn't bad. Thursday night. Glad I made reservations. Very user friendly web page. Depending on what you get the portions are small or large. If you're really hungry, ask! Took my girlfriend and her sister. All loved it. We will be going again. Prices decent. Bar bill always adds extra. Nice crowd. All walks of life. Staff seems to know the right time to ask if you need anything. I always like that.

Yummy and Different
We all loved the variety of items offered -- some of course more than others but all delicious in their own way. The service was attentive although it did take a very long time to get our last dish -- the ramen noodles. Good drinks - albeit different than other restaurants.
Will definitely return and put it on my recommended list
It was great that we could make a reservation even for a party of four

A really nice night
Dined here with friends, the cocktails were very good. The fried Kale is not to be missed. We ordered a bit of everything, and there wasn't a bad dish among them. Winners were the beef + plums, mustard seeds, cashews, and the fried Kale. I think the lobster mushrooms was just so-so. I'd come back again!
10/5/2013 12:00:00 AM
I'd recommend it!
This is a fun place with really good food. I've eaten there twice, once on a date night with my husband and once on a girls' night out (at my suggestion). I'm not a foodie, but I enjoyed the interesting food combinations and beautiful presentation. If it's your first visit, be sure to ask the waiter to explain how the menu works...it's simple, but if you don't know, you won't be able to order well.
10/18/2013 12:00:00 AM
The octopus was delicious. The kale was crunchy, interesting, a bit of a punch in the face with salt. We had the popcorn panna cotta. Possibly the best dessert I've had.
10/19/2013 12:00:00 AM
Variety is the spice of life...
A group of four of us ate here, for the first time, on Sunday. We sat in the Barwares side and ordered a variety of dishes to share and every one of them was delicious. Our wait-person was very helpful, giving our group tasters of Sake and describing the various dishes to us. Don't forget to ask about the specials, we tried one that was described as "poor man's porridge" and it was great!
We noticed that Barwares has a late night Happy Hour from 10pm-1am so we are going to keep that in mind.

Dining for Women
Drove down from Seattle, secured a reservation with open table, highly recommended from several friends. Stellar bar, found a fab Cremant to pair with our dinner. I little disappointed in the oysters, we both felt the oysters were overwhelmed by the fish sauce. The kale was excellent, with a slight sweet, salty, crunchy execution. The clams were delicious with the chorizo and broth, could of included a few more rice cakes, which we could count on one hand. Our favorite dish was the stellar hamachi starter, paper thin sliced hamachi, nestled atop creme fraiche and chili jam, excellant finish with the crunch of the fried shallots. Will stop by for happy hour again.

Small dishes, Big flavors
A great selection of small dishes that focus on Japanese fusion flavors. Nice cocktails, interesting wine and beer and sake list. We made a full dinner with about 11 dishes for 3 people. We ordered mostly vegetarian and seafood, with the exception of the tasty short rib. Favorites were the kimchee selection, the excellent fried 6-minute egg, sweet raw scallops with yuzu aioli, and the potato salad. Desserts were no letdown, although a little more corn flavor would be nice in the silky and not-too-rich pot de crême with caramel sauce. Atmosphere is pleasantly minimalist with a lot of black. We prefer the bar area as it feels a bit cozier than the front. Very friendly and helpful service.
10/27/2013 12:00:00 AM
Loved the food here. It was definitely very busy on a Friday night, but we were able to get a table quickly.
11/1/2013 12:00:00 AM
Great joint but...
Love the kale, scallops, and the oxtail! Although, the server did not recommend that I get rice with the oxtail curry because it was very rich. I wished they had roti to go with the oxtail instead. Also, the dessert did not pair with the Asian flair of the food. There should have been some sort of fried plantains or mango with sticky rice dessert. I ended up going to a Cuban place around the corner to get some dessert.

A must try
I've been on a mission to try a new restaurant each week, but smalwares is a place I'd love to return to, and soon. Every dish we tried was perfect - the flavors, presentation & execution. The drinks were also great - strong and well balanced flavors.
11/15/2013 4:00:00 PM
Even in Portland few restaurants seem to nail it with every dish served. We had the chicken lollipops, fried kale, black cod, short rib and oxtail curry. Each was attractively plated and delicious. We sat in the barwares section next to the fireplace. Our first visit will be the first of many.
