I'm so happy Gioia is now
I'm so happy Gioia is now on OpenTable. It used to be so hard to get a table. As always, the food was fantastic. The arugula salad is delicious. So is the sausage pizza. Yummy!

Have been here many times
Have been here many times before as its right around the corner. This was my first time bringing a large group and they made it work with flying colors. We had a group of 11 and were able to all get full with great service along the way.
Waitress took our orders with a happy and energetic attitude and the food came out quickly.
Great spot to host a casual dinner.

Food is fantastic and the wine list is focused with very interesting selections. Pizzas are deservedly popular, but pastas must be tried. Servers were very friendly and knowledgable about the food and wine menus. Can't wait to go back.

So Good I went back the next night!
A wonderful meal enjoyed outside on a warm evening. I have now had a couple of the pastas and they are delicious. Was surprised to see "fries with eyes" on the menu and since they are a favorite I went back a second night to get more!
The sanwiches and salads at lunch are great. So glad to have this restaurant in the neighborhood.

Great customer service - from the hostess to the wait staff. We had a reservation for 6 people at 8pm. When we checked in with the hostess she said the people at our table had already paid their bill and had their to-go boxes and it would be ready shortly. 20 minutes later, they were still sitting there. (Odd, because there was a line out the door and the place was obviously busy.) The hostess did everything she could to politely move them along - some guests are just rude.
The hostess brought us free prosecco while we waited. When we were finally seated, our waitress brought out free apps and apologized for the wait. I was impressed with the staff - they took a bad situation and made the best of it.

Great vibe but overly burnt crust
Modern/stylish yet warm/cozy ambience. Excellent friendly service. I generally love the food but I have to say that one out of every three pizzas I order from here has crust that is so burnt that it looks and tastes more like charcoal than bread. Frustrating and consistently a problem. Wish they would fix it so I can give them five stars.

Pork Belly... Oh Yeah!
I have liked Gioia since it opened. They have mastered the thin-crust pizza and the crust is never soggy. They have a new pork belly dish that is to die for. Pork Belly, arugula, cherries, and hazelnuts... what more could you ask for? It's delicious! I miss the original arugula salad they had, but this blew it away. Did I mention Pork Belly?
The chick-pea fritters are also very good and the sausage pizza is always yummy.

Excellent pizzas, brunch menu, and salads. The salad and fritta was a great combination to share! As for pizza, the flavour just explodes with freshness. The kitchen is very capable producing such good food. We enjoy it and sorry it is closed Monday's and not open late at night but perfectly understand the hours they keep. It is a "joy".

Short but delicious menu
There isn't a huge menu here like there are at some other restaurants, but what's there is delicious. Great for sharing salads and pizzas. It was loud when we were there on a Tuesday night, so be prepared to strain a bit if you're seated in the middle of the restaurant.

More than Pizza!!
While the pizza is amazing (we had the mushroom with added prosciutto - the crust, sauce and toppings were perfectly harmonized-- it's kind of like a combo between a fire oven pizzas and New York style pizza-- a truly awesome experience -- you must try one), other items on the menu are fantastic and illustrate the amazing skills of the kitchen. We shared a starter of the kale and chickpea fritters perfectly married with a yogurt sauce and fired mint leaves -- again, amazing flavor combinations; and also had the rigatonitti with pork ragu and eggplant -- a rustic dish with perfect balances of fatty, briny, toothsome yumminess. Servers were welcoming and overall awesome. Nice beer and wine selections. We will definitely be back!!

Brunch, lunch, or dinner, Gioia never fails to deliver a delicious dining experience. Service can be really spotty, but the food more than makes up for any waiting. Be sure to go hungry, because you'll want to order one of everything!

A new neighborhood favorite
We recently moved to Russian Hill an have made Gioia our new go-to for dinner AND brunch. The food is soooo good and the people make us feel at home.
Great salads and pasta and of course pizza. Oh, the burger is simple but our new favorite in the city.

Russian Hill Gem
One of those rare places where the food far exceeds expectations in a family friendly, casual atmosphere. The pizza is the best we've ever had, and every item on the dinner menu (which changes frequently) is a winner. Luckiest are those that live in the neighborhood, we drive from the East Bay and do so gladly.

Great Neighborhood Addition
The food here is delicious. I have had almost all the salads and they are wonderful. At lunch you can have a "sando" and currently it is fried fish or chicken parm. You can even order just a slice of pizza.
At night you must get a whole pizza and the choices are good. They also have some pastas on the menu along with a couple of entries.
My only complaint is that they keep changing the menu and eliminating the best items!

Fantastic service. The flavors
Fantastic service. The flavors of the pizzas are great; just wish the crust was a little crisper.

This is my third time eating here and the pizza is inventive and delicious. Great service as well.

Some reviewers have noted
Some reviewers have noted how long it takes to get your food (45 minutes from time of ordering). It's hard for me to knock the restaurant for this ... good, "slow food" (from scratch dough, scratch sauce, baking) pizza takes time and the pizza is delicious and reflects the time it takes to make it this good. Service was fine so the food time reflects a busy restaurant with full ovens and not slow service. Great place for kids, it was half families when we went (we have a 6 year old) so order some bread or salad for the kids to bridge them to pizza.

Very good for casual Italian
I really enjoyed the salads, pastas and pizza at Gioia so I'd definitely return. I found the pours on the wine a little light.

Joy for Gioia
I was finally able to give Gioia a try and now I'm wondering why I waited so long.
Even though I messed up our reservation time (we arrived 1/2hr late), they were very accommodating and gave us a great table in the window fairly quickly (the restaurant was packed on this Wednesday night). Our server was very friendly and enthusiastic and the food was amazing! The heirloom tomato salad was so fresh and delicious and the pizza was fantastic. We all love the crust. I can't wait to return!

Super loud inside for me but that's just a personal preference.

Gioia Pizzeria on Polk St
Friends of ours suggested this place and we were keen to try a new place with our children, who, while not toddlers, are still discerning (somewhat picky at times!) diners. We enjoyed the arugula and proscuitto pizza, fritto of mixed vegetables (cauliflower, acorn squash, broccoli and pomegranate seeds in a yogurt sauce), and the spaghetti with octopus, fennel, and chickpeas, and we ordered a kids pasta for the pickiest child. Because it was a Friday night, I'm glad i made a reservation thru Open Table. By 7pm, it was full, noisy and it looked as if everyone was having a really good time. Service was great - our server was knowledgeable of the wine list, was patient and checked in on us several times. A return visit is in order!

Excellent food in a casual setting. Server was positive, energetic, and responsive
Had lots is appetizers in addition to the pizza and pasta. It was all fresh and tasty
Ordered the roasted veggies because they were so good-- and I'm not crazy about roasted veggies!
The Julian pizza was my favorite. We were visiting SF, but will go back when I can

Delicious healthy tasty good price
Pizza crusts very thin very tasty with terrific texture. perfectly balanced fillings - don't forget extra garlic.. We get 3 small plates With a small pizza and share for two. homemade lemon juice not too sweet
The food is delicious. Big flavors good textures, leaves you satisfied. chefs got it right: mix & flavor, quality = very good. heathy as well, We went to three restaurants in a row over thanksgiving 2013 this meal cost the least and their food was the best by far. What a treat . The small plates can satisfy 4 people if you order about 5 plus a pizza.and will leave you very content. You won't get that cheap cooking oil feeling blahs here . Really need to try their octopus and pasta I bet it will be a treat. Quality quality quality
