This was a quaint well-decorated establishment. The waitress was knowledgable, helpful, and kind. During this vist there was a special seasonal lunch offering. We tried a typical russian sandwich filled with meat on a large home-made bun. Also, we sampled the orange salad, and a rolled beef dish. The salad was crab and salmon with a sour cream dressing served in an orange with red caviar for garnish. It was tasty. The rolled beef had gorgonzola cheese inside, a mushroom sauce over top, and was served with buttered egg noodles. The flavor was good but the meat a bit tough. We also tried a blini with nutella. This was a bit disappointing, since the dessert was served with two of the tiniest dollops of nutella for two crepes.

Delicious food and great variety! Huge vodka selection too

Good food, not so good ambiance
The food was very good and so was the service. My only complain is that the bar is next to the dining area an the music is absolutely annoying. It is too loud and not appropriate to have a nice dinner. It's like trying to eat in a disco. At the beginning you barely notice it but after a while it can drive you crazy. Anyway, the menu is extensive, everything we had was delicious and the service was great.

I have spent a great deal of time in Russia. This was as authentic as it could be in the USA. I very much enjoyed the vodka, caviar, wine, and beef stroganoff. I will visit again during one of my next trips to Austin.

We had a blast at Russian
We had a blast at Russian House. It was our monthly GNOMES meeeting (20+ years of once a month dinners) and it was fun. Most of our food was great with a few things being average or not to someone's taste. The free vodka shots to start the meal, the eclectic menu and the fun waitstaff made it a place I would go back.

I loved the ambiance. The dining room is like eating in a Russian house. I would like to try the 70+ flavored vodkas. The service is excellent.

Keeps getting better!
Awesome place, getting better and better with improved service, food selection and ambience. Busy at night, but private rooms make it perfect if you need quiet time.

Take a quick trip to Russia
Awesome food with great flavor, wide selection of ethic food, atmosphere makes you feel like your visting a family home in Russia with sister servers. Great selection of infused vodkas

It was a very interesting dinner, very different. from the regular menu. Had a great time. The waitress was very helpful with the authentic menu choice. Would certainly go back.

We went to their Sunday brunch for Mother's day and absolutely loved it. There was an extensive assortment of main dishes sides and desserts all of excellent quality. Highy recommend it for anyone looking for something different.

What a surprise!
We consider ourselves adventurous eaters, but we're unaware of this restaurant until finding it on Open Table. Who knew you could find authentic, traditional Russian cuisine right in the heart of Austin. Our Russians peaking server gave us great suggestions for our meal, a shot of vodka to kick things off, and was very attentive despite the packed dining room. We sampled the caviar, specialty soups, and an outrageous salad with fried duck and cooked pears over greens. Our entrees were delicious too, all enhanced by the nearly fifty flavors of houses fused vodkas we could choose from! Definitely a gem, and one we'll be back to soon.

A little trip to Russia
What a find! A cultural experience with so many things to try. The servers were very helpful, the food was interesting and fresh, and there was quite an extensive drink list.
5/16/2013 4:00:00 PM
What a treat!
The evening started with a complimentary shot of vodka and appetizer brought to our table. We had the smoked fish and appetizer and the herring and potato appetizers. They were outstanding! The friend I was with was hesitant she hadn't tried Russian food before and doesn't venture out side traditional food often. After one bite all her hesitations were gone and so was the food we cleaned our plates! We finished our meals like we started with another shot of vodka. These we choose off their infused vodka menu of over 75 infused vodkas. I highly recommend the Mint and Lime infused vodka the perfect way to end the perfect meal.
This is now one of my favorite spots in Austin!

We found this when trying to try something different. It was different and the everything about The Russian House was wonderful from the food to the staff. I would recommend trying this place to anyone.

Something a Bit Different
The Russian House has a notable brunch, with a number of traditional slavic choices. Newbies may be a little intimidated by unfamiliar looking dishes, but it is a great place to try something new. The space is divided between a restaurant/bar; some may find the "family" dining space a little small. The servers are very accommodating to families with children, though.

Enjoyed the bountiful spread
Enjoyed the bountiful spread on Father's Day. Several of the staff wore Russian costumes and a violinist played in the background. Liked the lace tablecloths and curtains. Fathers received a complimentary house-infused shot of delicious vodka. European atmosphere was charming. A great variety of Russian entrées, soups, salads, and desserts at the buffet ($25), and complimentary coffee or tea. The knowledgeable servers could answer your questions about the food. Because of the special occasion, diverse family groups arrived, and several tables took a photograph or two. The restaurant surprised my partner, whose heritage is part Russian.

Authentic Russian-Austin fusion!!
I found the initial walk into the restaurant very confusing, after having reviewed the website obsessively for a few weeks. It looks a bit more refined through the website than it is. Once we settled in with our welcome shot of vodka and took in the atmosphere, we decided it was a very austin take on an authentic Russian experience. The cozy, kitschy, ironic/iconic decor was balanced by a truly welcoming staff that guided our dining experience and engaged in our occasion, a wedding anniversary. We felt welcomed not only for the evening, but truly welcomed into their community. I highly recommend the food, which was consistently ethnic and authentic and well done. The vodka infusions were delicious, and the wine selections truly fit the menu.

We were unsure what to expect from The Russian House, especially after reading some reviews regarding poor service, but were pleasantly surprised to enjoy a fantastic meal with a wonderful server who attended to our every need and was very excited to be sharing her country's food with us. When you first walk in, there are different Russian costumes you can try on and take pictures on and get you in the mood. The bar offers maybe 100 different infused vodkas, and the ones we tried were delicious. We ordered 3 different appetizers and 4 different entrees, and everything we ate was delicious. There was a polka-style band playing covers (think The Doors and Led Zeppelin) in the bar, so we had another drink and watched. I will go back!

The real thing
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the ambiance. It took us four years back to when we made several stays in Russia while adopting our child. We felt like we'd stepped into a Russian home like the one where we were hosted. The food was excellent, as was the service. We were especially pleased that the menu selection had many healthy choices, including many gluten free options.
We look forward to many return visits.

Delicious food of Russia and
Delicious food of Russia and beyond, and a great combination of a comfortable restaurant and an interesting bar separate from the restaurant, with live music and tango dancing on the night we went. Large infused vodka selection. Attentive service. There's nothing else like this place in Austin!

What a treat! Can't wait to go back
Absolutely love this restaurant! We went on my husbands birthday when it decided to pour rain on us. We didn't have an umbrella and my husband being the gentleman he is gave me his raincoat. He arrived at the restaurant soaking wet and hostess, manager, and our waiter were all very attentive in making sure he was going to be comfortable. They gave him a free shirt, which I imagine they usually charge for and offered towels and a chair for him to put his wet cloths to dry out. Talk about great service. And of course the food is great. The Vodkas are amazing...AMAZING! We tried ten different ones I believe. The Christmas Tree infused vodka is one of a kind and surprisingly delicious; I wasn't sure what to expect with that one but I loved it.

Two halves make a whole
I actually found this place through google maps. While headed to another place I spotted the name and immediately was eager to find out if there was actually good Russian food to be found here (and fun vodka). In short, yes. Yes there is. Do you want a crazy Russian club with lots of techno? Good, come at night. Prefer a quaint-to-the-point-of-kitsch dining experience? Reserve a table. The food is lovely and very authentic. Eat something made with cabbage or beets. You won't regret it. The vodka options won't leave you longing for much. The service is wonderful, friendly, and warm.

The brunch is a great deal.
The brunch is a great deal. There is a wide array of food and the staff is willing to explain the various dishes. Everything was very tasty and fresh. There was sometimes miscommunication between the various people waiting on us. I want to check out the dinner menu now.
8/3/2013 5:00:00 PM
I was taking my Polish mother out for a special birthday dinner and was looking for something authentic. The Russian House delivered on that. The ambience is a little retro, but makes you feel like you are not in the usual trendy downtown Austin club. Antique plates, furniture, & decorations from former Soviet countries really are charming. The food was what really surprised me. The menu was huge and there were many dishes that sounded very good. Our waitress was incredibly knowledgeable. She knew the whole menu in great detail and I followed her recommendations. Both of us enjoyed our dishes and I am looking forward to going back to try more things on the menu. This restaurant was a great find if you're looking for something different.

Over the Top!!
My experience at the Russian House was incredible. Thanks so much to the staff there for providing guidance and information on the food and drink. Everything recommended was great and the vodka infusions were so tasty. I can't wait to come back and try some more. Thank you owners and staff!!

It was a pleasure to eat at the Russian House - the food was fabulous, the service was great (our waiter was able to recommend a lot of choices for us to consider) - will definitely come back!

A trip to Russia
Delightful. The whole experience was one to chat with the neighbors about. The ambience was probably close to a diner's experience in the Ukraine. More infused vodkas line the bar than one can imagine. Decor and music transport you to a dining parlor miles away. The extensive menu would be daunting were it not for a helpful waitstaff that offered perfect suggestions. The food was robust and savory. I will definitely return.

Was in Austin for Labor Day weekend and wanted to try the Russia House. In my humble opinion the food is on par with the Russia House and Mari Vanna in DC and less expensive. My family is from Kiev and found the Lamb Shashlik (bone in), Golubtsy, & Beef Stroganoff delicious. The complimentary vodka was a nice suprise. We tried the infused vodkas as well & all were great. I would have liked to order a Nemiroff (home favorite), but didn't see it, hopefully next time. Our waitress spoke fluent Russian and took care of our table very well. We will go back the next time we are in Austin.

Great Food: Unique for Austin
Enjoyed our evening here. The bread with sauerkraut and a shot of vodka is a nice touch. I am full blooded German and the sauerkraut here was the best I have had in a restaurant. Most German restaurants get it out of a can. I ordered it as an appetizer. This is made on site. About 100 different infused vodkas and I had a Martini from a garlic and juniper infused vodka. My lamb entree and wife's beef Stroganoff were both very nice. Unique fun place for Austin. They had Tango lessons there that night.
9/2/2013 5:00:00 PM
I can't believe this place is in Austin! I have to admit that I'm not a huge fan of Russian cuisine, and I was dragged to this restaurant. This place did not totally change my opinion of Russian cuisine, that's my personal taste/issue, not the fault of a whole culture/nation. The place is intimate and so, well, Russian in ambiance that I forgot I was still in Austin. We started off with shots of vodka, bread and sauerkraut -- not my favorite. We ordered an appetizer of cold halibut and salmon which was pretty good. My entree was a Russian version of chicken kabob with vegetables and boiled potatoes -- both were simple, somewhat plain, but still delicious. Even though this cuisine is not my favorite, I still intend to go back!

A must try
Excellent service, a nice variety of food and wonderful flavours of infused vodkas. A must try.
9/12/2013 5:00:00 PM
This is the first time I have ever had what I would call "authentic" or "old world" Russian food. I was accompanied by my 9 year old and 13 year old daughters. They loved it! We all ordered the Russian Pelmeni with Deer, Elk and Wild Boar. It was very tasty! We had Blini and hard boiled eggs with red caviar for appetizers and the Kiev cake and Babushka's Treats for dessert. Everything was absolutely delicious! We all drank Mors - perfection! Our waitress was very friendly and patient! We definitely want to go back and try out other dishes. The complimentary vodka was nice too!

Try this place!
Something different even for Austin! The food was fantastic and authentic. So nice to have another option that is unique.
9/19/2013 5:00:00 PM
I would have never gone into this restaurant just from the look outside. I am so glad I read through some of the reviews and made the reservation. What a nice surprise. The food is wonderful and the service is great. The selection on the menu was impressive and so much to try. We had the stuffed eggplant as appetizer and tried two of their soups. All are excellent. We had a lamb dish and a hunter plate for main courses, both were good but not as unique as the soup. Definitely worth a visit.
9/19/2013 5:00:00 PM
They're vodka list is quite amazing, I highly reccomend the lavender infused vodka, the apple cinnamon is pretty amazing too. As far as food goes everything we had was awesome. My husband had the beef strogonaff and I had the goultsby, both were out of this world! This is one of our new favorite places!

Everyone must go!!
We loved everything about it! The food was amazing! Especially the homemade Pelmini. Drink choices are divine! The atmosphere was perfect. I loved the decor. I would recommend this place to all my friends. (I already have!) Very enjoyable. The staff is pleasant and helpful.

I found the employees all very happy and professional. The Manager on Duty even assisted me while my companion, who was to meet me, couldn't find it and she finally contacted the restaurant by phone, and he brought me the phone so I could direct her to the restaurant. My companion didn't arrive as a result until an hour had passed ...the reservation was for 7, companion didn't arrive until 8, but the employees waited patiently to arrive. The service by the waitress was impeccable. The food was superior!, they even brought complimentary appetizers along with a shot of delicious vodka. The decor and ambiance was very comfortable, (I am Polish and the similarities between Russian and Polish food was a welcome treat. Everything was wonderful!

Very authentic- turn of the century dacha decor. Prepare for Grandma's authentic delicious cooking. Service a bit slow but food and friendly staff certainly worth the wait.

From the greeting (a free shot of vodka) to the delicious food, to the fun bar, this place is great. The service was wonderful. Don't be afraid to try Russian food, it's delicious!

When I learned Austin had
When I learned Austin had a Russian restaurant, I knew I had to try it. When you walk in, don't be surprised by the stuffed black bear & the enormous open bar area; the dining room is an intimate area behind it. Quickly seated & served by a sweet waitress who capably handled the four tables seated during lunch. Tried a vodka shot (they infuse their own), then a lunch special. Blini was very limp, unlike any I've had; okay with red caviar, but wish I'd chosen another appetizer. Stuffed vegetable entree (one green pepper and one large yellow squash, each filled with ground beef, pork, seasonings and vegetables) was wonderful and reminded me of everything I love about Russian cuisine. Everything tasted freshly prepared which I appreciate.

Russian House was delicious! What a great idea to bring food and culture from such a far off land - what a treat for Austin! Highly recommend for an all around great experience!

First, it was great to find
First, it was great to find a Russian restaurant in the heart of Austin. The ambience was casual and fun, leaning toward the offbeat. The service was very good and our waitress quite informative and pleasant. The food was excellent and would have made my grandmother think of home. We were a party of three but I would not hesitate to bring a larger group of people. This would be a restaurant I would seek out no matter what city I was visiting.

What is Russian food like?
This the question I am asked repeatedly. Why do we live so many years and not explore various cultures through their foods? Food is one of the most direct and fun ways to explore a culture and Russian House has done a great job preserving theirs by not giving way to "fusion". Upon entering you are met with a big Russian bear adorned with Russian military clothes. The dining area is similar in appearance to what you would find in an older Russian house. All of the staff are either from Russia or speak the language. The food. My last roommate was Russian and he loves it. So what is Russian food like? It's dense and warming. It's your mother bringing you warm stew on a winter day. You will not leave hungry and you will not be disappointed.

I grew up with traditional
I grew up with traditional Russian food and went to many Russian restaurants. Russian house takes the traditional al and gives it a little twist. The food was filling but not overwhelming and everything tasted fresh. Oh and their dessert! Home made chocolate biscotti sort of thing that I have never tasted. Amazing!! Plus excellent service. Our waitress, Sophia was a sweetheart and knew so much about the food.
I recommend this spot a lot!!

A genuine step out of the ordinary
Great food with an authentic foundation, at fair prices and backed up by fast and friendly service in a novel but not over the top setting made dinner at this unusual restaurant enjoyable and memorable. Iny opinion, a place to keep on a 'gotta go there again' list.
