Blackfriars Restaurant

writes...
  • Originally built in 1239 as a Dominican monastery; Blackfriars is the oldest restaurant in the UK and now houses one of the most recognised restaurants in Newcastle. Imagine choosing between a warm and cosy candle-lit interior with inglenooks and charm, or alfresco dining in the secluded courtyard, plus attentive and friendly service and gutsy Traditioal-British menus (indulgent a la carte or well-priced set menu) using seasonal produce sourced from the very best local markets. with an AA Rosette and listings in the Michelin and Good Food guides, it's no wonder the readers of The Observer voted Blackfriars the 'Best Restaurant in the North East' and Metro Newspaper awarded it 'Best Restaurant in Newcastle'! Blackfriars also has conference facilities and hosts very popular medieval banquets.

  • Banquet Facilities: Originating from 1239, Blackfriars is the perfect venue for a Medieval Banquets. They're great fun if you want to dine in true 13th century tradition with a feast of Lindisfarne Mead, spinach pyes, roast sausages, chicken, suckling ‘pigge’, honey-roast vegetables, condiments and sweet Michaelmas Pye - all washed down with flagons of specially made Benedictine ale, fine wine and medieval entertainment and served on large convivial and fruit-laden tables! Using hand-crafted pottery from the Northumbrian Craft Pottery, the dining room is lit with hundreds of candles to create an amazingly inviting medieval atmosphere. The tables are decorated with apples, oranges and bowls of nuts and the only items of cutlery allowed are the daggers, with drinks served by monks and buxom wenches! Bespoke privately booked banquets for up to 80 guests have become immensely popular and we can tailor them to your needs making them as relaxed or raucous as you like! See website for prices.
