A word from Renee Kelly's Harvest
Renee Kelly's Harvest is a farm to table restaurant aiming to change the food system, one plate at a time. We use local farmers and growers whenever possible. Every dish Chef Renée creates is prepared according to strict code of culinary conduct. "I use only locally grown, farm-fresh foods, organic if possible," she says. "The earth provides us with anything we need at any given part of time for optimum health, nutrition and flavor." Each ingredient is purchased for immediate use.
Renee Kelly's Harvest at Caenen Castle is the only real, restored castle, right here in Kansas City, where you can enjoy fresh cuisine. Like most castles, this one comes complete with a classically trained chef; a wine cellar fit for a king; and a staff ready to fulfill your grandest plans. Not only does Harvest specialize in local, farm to table dining, we also work with corporate retreats, weddings, rehearsal dinners, cooking classes and more special occasions.

Diner Reviews
  • "Food was cold. We ordered biscuits and gravy, we didn't get very much gravy. Not worth what it cost. Worried about this place."

  • "Went for our Anniversary. Fantastic. Wonderful setting. Great food. Terrific service. Ate outside in a beautiful setting, although we plan to go back to enjoy the inside next time, which looks wonderful. We could not have enjoyed our experience more. Go try this place yourself. You'll be glad you did."

  • "Server was very experienced and Renee was very gracious--came by our table and said how appreciative she was that we were there. This is a well-kept secret----spread the word that it's reasonably priced and the food is good!"

  • "We had no idea when we found it that it would be so good. Farm fresh food and castle atmosphere what more could you want."

  • "Over the years have driven by the castle and thought what a cool place. When looking for my 'date night with my wife' place I remembered the Harvest. Wow. I was really surprised and pleased at what we found. This is truly a nice place and the food was really good. My wife afterwards said we need to come back and even if it was just for desert or for drinks."

  • "Our experience here was a pleasant surprise. The building had been beautifully renovated with amazingly high quality details. Yet flanking the fireplace on either side of the mantle were chalkboards with the local farms' names and what's being sourced from. That's what you'll find, upscale yet approachable farm-to-table dining. They also invited us to feel free to look around, how welcoming was that! The back courtyard dining was lovely and large compared to what we expected. Nice wines, great daily specials (wine lovers, go on Wed for $6 glasses and 50% off select bottles, cocktail lovers be there Thursdays, did we mention the weekend brunch?). We went as a special occasion but we'll be back just for the food and to help support this gem."

  • "This may be one of the nicest outdoor areas in the metro, surrounding by trees and gardens. The service is friendly, though a bit unpolished. I enjoy the farm to table food, but my duck was a little tough with not enough sauce, but the rest of the meal was outstanding. Even better, it was 1/2 off wine night."

  • "Our waitress was very polite and attentive, but it's too bad she had to serve food that was not prepared well. My scotch filet that I ordered medium rare was charred on the outside and colder than room temperature on the inside. I told our waitress and she returned it to the kitchen and when it came back 10 minutes later it was not worth eating. Terrible experience and would not recommend going here to eat anything!"

  • "My husband and I took our 13 and 16-year-old granddaughters there for a special evening and it turned out to be that and more. All four of us loved every bite of our dinners starting with the salad. Sadly we were too full for dessert, but are looking forward to many trips back. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. I think brunch on the patio would be wonderful so next time we're in Kansas City, we'll give that a try. I was happy there wasn't loud music playing. The evening was perfect."

  • "Wait Staff young and inexperienced. Beef dishes good . Fish dish skimpy and poorly cooked."

  • "The food was very good, the service was lacking. The server was very nice, hoever, we ate on the patio and we felt like we were forgotten. She did not bring extra bread plates for our bread, no silverware, no ice in our water(it was a warm day). Maybe this was her first day there? Anyway, we will try it again, the ambience was really nice."

  • "We were really looking forward to coming here for brunch, as I had heard great things about it. I actually thought my meal (aptly named "Pretty Darn Good Breakfast") was delicious, but my husband ordered the Country Fried Steak meal and, although we were only the second customers to walk in the door that morning, they were out of the steak. So, he ordered an omelet because he did not want to pay $11.00 for biscuits and gravy, which is what his second choice would have been. The service was good, but not great. It seemed like our server might have been new. So, all-in-all it was tasty, but I'm not sure we'll be back."

  • "So our family found this treasure of am establishment...it's an incredible building, however it is one large room where sound carries. My wife had this amazing alcohol ginger drink and I had the darkest beer if the house, buffalo sweat, not for the meager if heart. It was a really nice meal but it just seemed like the portions were sized differently. They are unique in how the serve with a lot of citrus on the trout, pepper on the beef, and chicken that was unknown. We did not raise a fuss but the wait staff was really concerned, offered us free dessert. But we kindly declined, we will try it again, we just didn't feel like."

  • "It was our first time visiting, but we dined with another couple who had been before. Overall we we very impressed with the setting and atmosphere. The menu was very exciting, but the service and execution of the dishes, we felt, did not quite live up to the expectations set by the menu and what we had heard about the restaurant. Our dining companions agreed and indicated that the service especially had been better during previous visits. We do plan on dining again and will continue to expect good and hopefully great things."

  • "My daughter had eaten brunch at Renée Kelly's and thought it was quite good so I suggested it to my son and fiancé for dinner. They frequent farm to table restaurants - Farmhouse and Westside Local being two of their favorites. What an embarrassment and waste of money! We should have been forewarned when we saw how empty the parking lot and restaurant were. The French onion soup was so salty it was barely edible. Out of three fish dishes (two trout and one striped bass), two were over-cooked and one was VERY undercooked. The brown rice was also extremely salty. The lack of flavor on the trout balanced it. It was half-priced wine night, but when our bill came, only three of the five glasses were discounted. We will not return."

  • "My husband and I celebrated our anniversary with brunch at Renee Kelly's. What a way to feel like a king and queen! The food was delicious and the atmosphere was romantic. It was a perfect way to start our anniversary! We enjoyed every minute of the time and every bite of our meal! Definitely a place we need to visit again and bring friends!"

  • "My wife and I went to Renee Kelly's for our anniversary. The overall experience was fantastic. The grounds were well kept and inviting from the moment we pulled into the parking lot. The castle has been tastefully restored. They have done a great job of blending the modern while keeping the integrity of the old. Our server was very helpful. You could tell she enjoyed her job. The presentation of the food was creative and the taste was very good! We will definitely go back. "

  • "You would not expect to find a 107 year old castle in the heart of Johnson County and you would not expect that castle to have such amazing food and ambiance. This place is a true gem in Johnson County. I had the signature filet and my wife had the daily special of short ribs. Both of our dishes we expertly displayed and the quality and taste of the food rivaled more notable steak houses in Kansas City. The bar provided excellent drink pairings with top quality cocktails. There is an amazing patio out back that would make a great evening happy hour or dinner spot. In short, skip the drive to downtown, you have amazing, high-quality, farm to table food right in the middle of Johnson County. "

  • "Service was slow. There was only 2 other groups while we we there and the people came at different times. My chicken salad sandwich was 90% bun. 5% chicken with 2 pieces gristle. The rest was runny cream sauce. One of my friends got the duck sandwich. She said was good but once again the bun was most of meal. Another got quich with soggy crust. The trout was okay but a little on the dry side. We all shared the strawberry dessert. The strawberrys where wonderful the cream and chocolate sauce was good. We waited on the dessert a good 45 minutes. The server said they were waiting on the cream. I guess they had to go milk the cow. All in all I am glad we did not have to leave quickly and manly came there for girls luncheon."

  • "Had a gift certificate and it all sounded good. Local sourced food which we support. Reservations for eight got there 15 minutes early. No one at the door so we migrated to adjacent bar area. I have been ignored before but this was not even being seen and they didn't care. Fifteen minutes go buy still no one at door. One patron kept going to the bar ordering drinks and bringing back to his table. I asked him what it took to get a drink and he replied that you have to be very aggressive. He also said that if you can't get any food you might as well drink. At that point we were about to leave when the door person showed up to check our reservations. "

  • "Food was great, presentation was fantastic the wait was almost intolerable. Sat us down 25 minutes late -we where on time- early as a matter of fact. The appatizer took 30 minutes to get, everything just took so long to get. That being said the food was excellent. The only way I would go back is if I have an extra four hours of my life to eat dinner again."

  • "This was a terrible restaurant. Our server was an amateur who did not know the ingredients or what was in stock. We ordered the ribs to find out they were sold out ( at 6:15 at night). Our soup was so cold we had to send it back to be warmed up; when it was returned the garnish was missing and we were told the kitchen had run out of garnish. My chicken was so dry it tasted like sandpaper. I sent it back and my replacement dish was never served. The server cleared our table and NEVER brought me my entree. She did not even know she missed it until I spoke to the manager. He was flat and barely apologized. I was completely embarrassed having brought a group of six to Renee Kelly from Canada. They could not believe this was fine dining"

  • "Each of our dishes were unevenly cooked, and unevenly seasoned. We went once and will not be back. Menu said an item was to be included and was not, even when requested. "

  • "Harvest would be worth a visit just to see the building but do yourself a favor and stay for dinner. The selection of entrees is unusual, varied and well-thought-out and sourced from mainly small, local growers and producers. Portions are ample and the flavors blend nicely for a great dining experience. And don't leave out dessert! We'll be back!"

  • "We've had dinner at RK's several times so we decided to try lunch. It was disappointing. Service was extremely slow. My wife ordered quiche. It was an individual quiche and it was mostly crust with very little custard. I had a short rib sandwich. The meat was tasty, but it was sandwiched between 2 thick slices of focaccia; too much bread. Both dishes came with the same side salad. The raspberry vinaigrette was nice, but the lettuce was wilted, as if it had been dressed well before we ordered and was allowed to sit."

  • "We three friends expected an outstanding dining experience in this historic, beautiful restaurant. What we got was not worth the money! The bun on the two (dry) sandwiches ordered was extremely thick and stale. The "fresh greens" in the two salads should have been discarded....brown edges and very limp. Needless to say, we could not eat either. The trout that one person ordered was an extremely small portion, but was deemed "okay". We chose not to order dessert as we feared another "disappointment". There were very few diners there, which should have been our first clue of what was to come."

  • "This restaurant is set inside of an old castle. It is incredibly romantic (they will even take you to tour their wine cellars). The menu changes each season, plus they offer a chef's tasting menu which changes every few days. This restaurant is in the middle of a neighborhood where you would not expect to find it, which makes it all the more quaint and unique. I can't wait to go back again."

  • "The local farm to table was interesting, the only problem is that depending on the season and what you like, there may only be a couple of choices for you. "

  • "I went to Renee Kelly's Harvest on a date with my boyfriend. We both loved the healthy choices of food and enjoyed exploring the house and garden area. The music was noticeable, but not loud. I saw people on dates as well as families dining. It was a great experience and I would recommended this restaurant to both friends and family."

  • "Came with our family for dinner to celebrate our anniversary at the place we had our wedding reception three years ago. Our waitress was incredibly inattentive. When we told her we were celebrating our anniversary and that we had our reception at Renee Kelly's she didn't even say congratulations. We were a bit surprised. She was slow to check up on us and refill our drinks. Maybe she was new? Our food was excellent though. Everyone ordered something different and everyone's meal tasted great. Maybe we'll think about coming back to celebrate our anniversary again next year. "

  • "They didn't have our reservation but plenty of tables open. This was lunch and it took an hour to get our food and 40 minutes for our drinks. The good was wonderful so that was the only positive."

  • "The food items on the brunch menu are interesting and different. The main draw is the castle-like exterior and stone and wood interior."
