Diner Reviews
  • "Food was very good especially the Roast Beef. Wide assortment of breads and salads. Limited desserts. Ambience was what you would expect of a grand hotel. Service was good. Overall much better than expected. Reasonably priced at $24."

  • "Excellent food, service, ambiance. Can't beat it for the best in dining as well as special occasions. Consistent quality."

  • "We ate in the Regency Room for lunch while attending a major event held at the hotel this past week. I was quite disappointed, as well as the rest of my party. It was the first time I had eaten there, usually just going to the Pine Room instead. Our reservations were at 12:15. The buffet food was picked over, and they began shutting it down about 1:00. Vegetables and their famous spoon bread were cold. We asked for a new, hot tray, and were told they were shutting the buffet down. So as a result, we couldn't have any. Fish was desperately undercooked and pink. We could not eat it. The dining room was rather full, and I feel that they really missed out on an opportunity, with a huge crowd staying at the hotel, to make some fans for life."

  • "Dinner was not impressive. And took 2 hours when they weren't busy"

  • "Remembered eating here years ago and went on line and liked the menu. We were celebrating our Anniversary and the meal was outstanding. We cant say how the wine is as we are not drinkers of wine. Everyone was very attentive, pleasant and the food was excellent. Just wish we both had bigger tummies. Would highly recommend a visit here."

  • "I've been to the Regency Room for brunch before and I've never been let down. This time, my boyfriend and I decided we would go for dinner on a Friday night. We made reservations because we both (wrongly) assumed that on a Friday night they would be slammed. The reservations were not needed. The restaurant was half full, at best, the service was friendly and professional, but painfully slow. Most notable, my boyfriend and I who are in our mid-thirties were the youngest in the restaurant by far."

  • "This was a wonderful wonderful experience! The variety and quality of the food was excellent! We'll remember this brunch for a long time! We have talked about how special that brunch was over and over again. Superb!"

  • "My wife and I chose to celebrate our 22nd anniversary in the Regency Room. What a great experience! The service was impeccable and the food fabulous. There were several special "touches" such as Happy Anniversary written in Chocolate on our dessert plate that made the event very memorable. Good ambiance, great service, good food and special touches. Well done."

  • "Great, friendly and knowledgeable gentleman who seated us and made us feel special. Server (Nina H) was super in every detail throughout the evening. The food was excellent. The chefs did special little items to make our experience memorable as this was our 49th Wedding Anniversary."

  • "It's always a pleasure to have a meal or celebrate a special occasion or holiday at the Regency Room."

  • "Even though part of my party was about a half-hour late and our entire breakfast lasted almost two hours, the staff was courteous, attentive and patient. At no time did I get the impression that we were overstaying our welcome, nor were we at any time rushed. The food was wonderful, although one member of my group felt that the hollandaise sauce was considerably spicier than she was used to. Everyone else was very pleased with the food and the service. We would definitely go back and visit when in the area again! "

  • "A touch of class and wonderful service does make up for the rather mundane food. Great place to meet folks and enjoy conversation. "

  • "Waiter was fantastic, highly professional, and did not any slight detail missed. His name is Craig W. and we will ask specifically for him next time. We look forward to our next visit. "

  • "The Regency Room is steeped in southern charm and elegance, and its ambiance evokes a time gone by. We wish the quality of food and service were given an equivalent measure of attention. Our table of three ordered salmon, a seafood medley, and filet mignon. All judged their meals good, but not spectacular. Our server was friendly, but made multiple trips to the kitchen to retrieve forgotten requests. The final insult came when she declined our order of Bananas Foster because the restaurant was too short-staffed to prepare it. On only one of our last four visits to this eatery was the dessert available. We love the history and elegance of Hotel Roanoke. We wish The Regency Room echoed that tradition."

  • "The Regency Room is a Roanoke stalwart that receives justifiable accolades for service and ambiance, but even with a new chef in residence, it's the same tired, old menu. Even in the tradition-soaked Hotel Roanoke, some acknowledgement of contemporary cuisine would be welcome. On this night our food was adequately prepared and presented, and we were afforded the sometimes-unavailable Bananas Foster, but we found ourselves lamenting that something was missing. A new chef should assert some authority and spice up a menu burdened by years of merely acceptable."

  • "We have enjoyed The Hotel Roanoke's Regency Room on several occasions - Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve for several years and have always enjoyed the food, the warm, friendly service, the ambience, and the piano. We are fortunate that we live in the area."

  • "Outstanding food. Attentive service. Fantastic live music. The filets were great as were the Caesar salads. Don't tell your male guests to wear a tie though. NO ONE DOES...and if you do, you're aggravated they don't enforce the rule! "

  • "Once again, we enjoyed a relaxing brunch to celebrate a family event. The food is great....the atmosphere perfect."

  • "There are Sundays where I want a traditional buffet, where I can eat a ridiculous amount of food in pleasant surroundings. The Hotel Roanoke can be counted on to provide that tradition. Excellent piano music, mountains of good quality food and elegant table settings. I wouldn't change a thing."

  • "Rare these days to find a good mix between youthful energy and old world elegance; I think the Regency does a fantastic job of combining the two, both in ambiance and food choices. Dinner music is an especially good addition to this lovely room, along with soft lighting, gracious staff, and tried and true Southern cuisine. Especially nice to revisit tradiitons which never grow old, and for which HR is famous for. Elegant, but not stuffy, The Regency is inviting to the younger set, as well as comforting to those of us who have been visiting the hotel for years. The staff and chefs do an excellent job of combining the old and new. Thank you for continuing tradition and gracious dining!"

  • "Food was artfully presented with enough flair to be special, and enough "ordinary" to fit in the range of comfort food. All the staff, from the dining room receptionist, seemed unusually friendly and helpful. Vegetables were perfectly prepared to tenderness, and meat offerings were quite flavorful. One of our absolutely favorite places."

  • "I felt like my overall experience was very good. I was a little shocked at the prices however. I understand that you get what you pay for but I have had many good meals that didnt cost me an arm and a leg either. An entree, soup, and salad with water shouldnt have to cost $60+tax for one person. That feels almost criminal. Everything tasted very good, presentation was good, but the indigestion I experienced over the total cost for 2 people to eat made me think twice before ever going back."

  • "Went for the first time to celebrate my husbands birthday. Very nice, excellent service, romantic and excellent for a special occasion. They called a few days before since on my reservation I had put first time, and told them we were celebrating a birthday. Right after the meal, the waitress came and asked whose birthday it was and wished him a happy birthday, then they brought out a special dessert for him and the piano man played happy birthday! We will be back, great food!"

  • "The Regency Room at the Hotel Roanoke is a great place for a quiet lazy Sunday brunch. The food is excellent with an omelet bar and and carving station. Plenty of breakfast or lunch choices abound and the wait staff is very friendly and accommodating. While you likely can get a table if you walk up I would recommend a reservation because it can get crowded. The price is amazingly low considering the overall quality. If this were in a New York hotel it would likely cost 3 or 4 times as much with no better quality."

  • "Wonderful evening for two on a great evening in The Star City. The Regency Room at The Hotel Roanoke was vibrant with the American Songbook providing a special ambience. A smiggen of peanut soup and roast lamb (for her), She crab soup adn Appalachian trout (for me), and a brulee rice pudding concoction (for us) were perfect in all respects. Nicely seasoned, rightly portioned, and evenly cooked. Our server understood our need for a special evening without any rush...and Ken delivered. Wine pairings were appropriate and complimented the meal. Definitely one of the better dining experiences in Southwest Virginia."

  • "The Hotel Roanoke has a storied past and sharing in that history is The Regency Room. It remains the grand dame of eateries in Roanoke, and the ambiance is one of dignified southern style. Our recent experiences have seen the quality of food and level of service retreating from its glory days, and our visit on this occasion followed that trend. Among our six guests, food quality varied widely from plate to plate, and the service was abysmally slow. There were so few available servers that the labor-intensive Bananas Foster was declared unavailable for lack of time to prepare it. Special recognition for three birthday celebrants was a nice touch, but we came away thinking this once-special place has lost some of its luster."

  • "We loved the overall ambiance of the evening. The music trio playing in the background added to the overall experience and we didn't realize that we had been seated for 3 hours. Two individuals in my party had the New York Strip Steak, One had the Duck and Scallops, One had the Crab Cake and I had the Surf & Turf with a Fillet and Salmon which were exceptionally well. Everyone said their selections were great with the exception of the crab cake that had a "bite" to the seasoning and they could not finish their meal."

  • "This was a family gathering to celebrate a birthday. My daughter had been a guest there for a wedding the night before. We enjoyed a wonderful brunch! The service was great, there was beautiful piano music, and the food was wonderful!"

  • "Excellent hotel with great service. Dining room experience was very bad! My wifes steak was tasteless and way over done. Too bad cause service was excellent and my salmon was very good and the peanut soup was excellent. Overall the experience would have been great but who wants to pay $35 for a steak that's basically inedible."

  • "We went to the Regency Room for an anniversary dinner and it delivered beyond our expectations. Our Friday evening experience was one of great food, wine and service, all tastefully backdropped by a jazz trio playing the right music at the right volume. Both the restaurant and the Hotel Roanoke are unique gems that combine classic (story book!) ambiance and excellent value when fairly compared to the alternatives. We will not wait for an anniversary to return."
