A word from Reef
Expertly prepared seafood with Gulf Coast, Mediterranean and Asian influences reflects culinary sophistication never-before seen among Houston’s high-profile restaurant scene. Imagine such delectable dishes as salted slow-baked salmon atop lemon risotto, crispy-skin snapper garnished by sweet and sour chard, grilled scallops aside truffle polenta and tempura batter-bronzed soft-shell crab enhanced with slightly sweet yet also sour vinaigrette. Venturing beyond traditional boundaries, less-known tilefish, triggerfish, wahoo, cobia and Rockport-caught tripletail are frequently showcased with savory brilContinued

  • "We are trying new places we have never been before, and this is not a repeat. Food was average, service was friendly but not attentive, very, very noisy. Neighborhood on the edge of iffy."

  • "The food was fantastic. JJ our server was so helpful and his recommendations were all perfect. We had a wonderful evening. I have been dreaming about the ceviche ever since."

  • "We are frequenters of Reef and when we wanted a seafood option for the Lent season for a nice date night on Friday our first thought was the scallops and snapper carpaccio at Reef. We've gone multiple times and always loved Reef but this night was different. We made a reservation and were sat at the table next to the bussing station which almost made it seem that they forgot about us/afterthought. It took an inordinate amount of time for the bottle of wine and appetizers to come out, then even longer for the main course to come out. The gumbo was almost inedible and the scallops with minted pea puree were overwhelmingly minted. The service was poor and the food did not seem worth the hefty price tag at the end of the meal."

  • "where do I begin, I love love love this place. Came here first time during HRW a couple of years ago, and have been a fan ever since. The freshest mussels, the best fried mac and cheese on this planet, and the most awesome of all fish dishes from the fried Thai fish all the way to Crab Carbonara - no dish goes unnoticed -- The staff from moment of arrival to getting your check is accommodating and right on track. Go here for sure."

  • "I ordered the scallops and it was a pitifully small portion (3 scallops with about 3 sprigs of greens)."

  • "The food was very good, innovative and interesting. The service was outstanding."

  • "I'd been hearing mixed reviews about this place before I booked it for a late Valentine's Day celebration but decided to give it a shot anyway. The environment is a little bit dressy in the evening, but the service doesn't reflect it at all. Very casual/flippant attitudes from servers. The market vegetable & herb salad had very little flavor. The crispy skin snapper was very good. Lots of flavor, nice crispy skin, but a little bit chewy. The grilled yellowfish tuna was a thick piece of meat with little flavor. The brussels really saved this dish! Not sure why this restaurant is so revered, but it was very average. The good thing is that the price isn't too bad for what you get."

  • "I love the feel of this place. The decor is simultaneously sparkling and soothing, the staff is all very friendly & knowledgeable, service is always accommodating and polite. The sweet potato-bacon ravioli, slow baked salmon on meyer lemon risotto with chili oil, and vietnamese coffee tart are all outstanding. The wine list is tremendous, and the cocktails are made at the adjacent bar (delicious!). Tip: If going for an anniversary or birthday, mention that in either your reservation or to your server. You'll get a pair of complimentary mini No Minors Milkshakes. :)"

  • "This is the third time I have eaten at The Reef. The food is OK...but not amazing. Our waiter was excellent and nothing was horrible....but nothing was amazing either. For the price, I expect amazing."

  • "Reef is always great and our recent experience was better than ever. Reef continues to be innovative and all the dishes we ordered were wonderful. Our waiter was polished and made the experience even better."

  • "Shared a wonderful meal with a friend for lunch. Got the "Two for $12" option and had the shrimp lettuce wraps and the steamed shrimp salad. Both were excellent, though the lettuce wraps were a little messy. Great tastes, great ambience, great service! I'll be back."

  • "Service was erratic and slow, not consistent with our previous experiences. Three of our five entrees were much more heavily seasoned than described. One of the entrees was overcooked and dry. This has been one of our favorite seafood restaurants, hopefully our next visit will reaffirm that."

  • "Reef was recommended by a friend and curious to experience food of a former Next Iron Chef competitor. Did not disappoint! Not crazy about industrial decor but that more than offset by the food, service and extensive list of reasonably priced wines. A must do if you're in Houston."

  • "We were very impressed with the Reef. Food exceptional, wine list extensive and fairly priced and our server Sal was the best, not only very personable but well versed on the food and wine menus. Highly recommend the Reef."

  • "I met some clients for lunch at the Reef and was very pleased with the results. I had a house salad and seared tuna with bulgogi. They are very big on presentation and taste. I also had the strawberry cheesecake for dessert, which was excellent."

  • "We were in Houston for two days, concierge of the hotel recommended this restaurant for seafood. We had an excellent dinner, great drinks. We came back next day without hesitation. Oysters were very fresh, tuna was very delicate and flavorful, red fish, scallops and yellow fin tuna were all outstanding, even brussel sprouts were everybody's favorite."

  • "Wednesday night, bit of a dinner rush. Every time we asked the waiter for recommendations on apps or mains, he basically recommended everything. "The red fish is really good, so is the snapper. The tuna is excellent, the oysters are my favorite..." and so on. Well the red fish wasn't really good, it came out over-cooked, dry and everything on the plate was cold. The waiter never came by to check on us after the food was delivered, my friends had all finished their meals and I took one bite of the fish and fried mac and cheese (big let down btw) and waited for the server to come by. Returned the food and didn't have time to wait around another 45 minutes to re-cook anything else. Ended up eating a slice of pizza from a spot down the street"

  • "Great restaurant in Midtown Houston. Had a reservation for 9pm and we were seated right when we got there. It was busy but there were still some open tables. The waiter got there quickly when we arrived, however his attention seemed elsewhere after that. He may have been busy but there were long waits between table visits and when he was at the table we felt very rushed to make decisions. We had the fried oysters and calamari for appetizers and both were very good. For dinner we had the baked salmon and the grilled yellowfin tuna. The salmon was slightly bland but still good. The tuna was excellent! We were so full we didn't try dessert. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and I expect to return."

  • "My wife and I went for our 21st Anniversary. Arrived at 7:20 for our 7:30 reservation. Place was about 2/3 full. There were a few seats at the bar so we waited and had a drink while they got the table ready. The hostess can and found us around 7:45. She said she had texted us but neither one of us received a text. We were having fun at the bar and were in no hurry so the extra few minutes worked out great. The service at the table was excellent. Very attentive without being overbearing. Wine list is not the size of "War and Peace" but it is plenty big. The wine prices are very good. Just a few dollars ($5 - $10) above retail. Food was very good. Can't wait to go back. FYI - The place was packed by 8:30/9:00."

  • "We love Reef. I think it's the best seafood in town. This time the service was very slow. I have been there at least ten times and have never had that experience before, so assume that it was an unusual event. But everything was very slow arriving. But the food was still fantastic!"

  • "The food was exquisite. Especially given the price. Six of us on a "guy trip" for a Rockets game ate there on a recommendation. Got in at last minute (Saturday at 5:15) but don't chance it: they had 400 reservations that day. We had a variety of fish dishes and appetizers plus sliders. I will be going there again."

  • "The service was stressful. The waiter was running all over the place and talking too fast. We could not ask him anything without him leaving before we were finished talking. When dinner was served, we didn't have any cutlery to eat with so we waited 3 more minutes... The place is a bit noisy but the atmosphere is nice and the food delicious which compensates for the poor service."

  • "My dish was better than outstanding, if that's possible. I had the mixed grill seafood with couscous. Oh my... heaven."

  • "The grilled tuna is the best in town! The only reason I didnt give it a 5 star is the cornmeal fried oysters we had as appetizers were a little on the tough side, but overall great food! I wish I had our waitress' name, she was over the top awesome!"

  • "Had out of town guests--took them to Reef for fantastic food. The food did not disappoint; however, our service was very poor. The waiter barely checked on us--seemed irritated by simple questions regarding two dishes etc. We expected more from a top-rated restaurant like Reef!"

  • "the food was amazing. we started with oysters on the half shell and the beet and goat cheese salad. then we had the mahi mahi and yellowfin tuna. Tuna was my favorite but both were delish. Topped everything off with a nice wine. only disappointment was our server - having been in service industry i feel i have reasonable expectations. had to flag him down several times (our reservations were at 5:45, so was not busy in the restaurant), and his attitude was borderline surly."

  • "Our waitress was very friendly and casting. She made due we got what we wanted quickly and she made sure we were satisfied with everything. It was overall pleasant. My boyfriend and I were celebrating our anniversary so it wasn't as romantic because it was constant noise and talking from through out the restaurant. But it wasn't as disturbing to make me uncomfortable."

  • "Food was great, we enjoyed the calimari as an appitizer, and both the tuna with brussel sprouts and the mahi mahi with bulgogi potatoes were VERYYYY good. We finished with the viatemeese chocolate coffee tart, with condensed milk ice cream. Everythign was extremely good. Our waiter was very attentive, until we ordered a lower priced bottle of wine. Then he was pretty short with us, but we still got everythign we needed. Other than that, extremely postive expreience."

  • "Outstanding fish dishes. Great variety of different types and styles of cooking fish. Also has good meat options for the non-fish eater in your party. Overall a nice place to enjoy a meal. Wine list is extensive and reasonably priced."

  • "This was our first visit to Reef. I was disappointed in our waiter. He was very nice, but slow. He did not get one of the orders correct (the side). He did not serve bread with our meal/wine. He told us that it was available only on request, but I found it interesting that all the tables around us had bread served. Maybe they were aware of the policy. For such a very nice, upscale restaurant, that seems really poor. I mean really? A bit surprised."
