Diner Reviews
  • "Service was horrible. Slow, brought me the wrong entree and then I Had to wait almost 30 mins. I thought it was overpriced for what it is. The place was almost empty so I can't excuse the service based on that. Our waiter seemed to disappear."

  • "We ate a late dinner at Redwood and were able to sit outside. The ambience was magical with the courtyard being lit by hundreds of tiny lights. We tried two of the specials for the night, melon gazpacho to start and the chipotle barbeque ribs. Both dishes were delicious. The soup was sweet but with a pleasant spicy aftertaste from the jalapeno peppers and the ribs were tender and very flavorful. The ribs came with an excellent mac and cheese and a very good potato salad. The service was very efficient and our waiter, Rob, was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. He made recommendations for drinks that complemented our meals perfectly. The three course menu was a great value at $40 for appetizer, entrée and desert."

  • "A great looking restaurant with average to below-average food and a waitress who was inattentive. Ceasar salad was OK, Calamari included deep fried lemons which confused us, and a fruit and jalopeno cold soup special which was good. Despite the restaurant at 70% occupancy it took 45 min to get our entree after ordering and only 4 of 5 entrees came out. The waitress wasn't around to confirm all was delivered for 5 minutes and another 5 before she got the last entree. The skirt steak was tasty once you could cut through very tough veins of fat. The scallops were over seasoned and it seemed like they were cut in half so it appeared we got 8 in an order when we really got 4. Pork tenderloin was so-so. Will never recommend Redwood for food."

  • "I selected Redwood because I had remembered when I had eaten lunch there awhile ago. I wanted a relatively quiet and relaxing place to dine while reconnecting with my guest. We had a tough time deciding between the two lunch menus. The" Pick Two" menu was intriguing. We settled on the regular lunch menu sharing the fried calamari, which was wonderfully crisp. My guest had the salmon entree which she ate heartily. I had the shrimp po' boy which reminded me of a lobster roll in its simplicity of four lightly seasoned large shrimp and lots of lettuce. Only the side of potato chips was underwhelming. What I appreciate about Redwood is its mission to serve organic food. From farm to the table can be tasted. I hope my third time tops this visit."

  • "Being negative is not my style but being honest is. Our brunch at Redwood was very disappointing. I had Caesar salad with chicken. there was no dressing on the salad and a long wait to get it from waitress. My friends had breakfast. The food was extremely cold, eggs, bacon and the other parties pancakes very cold. We unfortunately had to return these, The new breakfasat dish was hot but the "toast was untoasted" and had to ask for toast which came much later than the breakfast was eaten. The pancake breakfast was not brought until the other party had eaten and was exchanged for tuna nicoise salad. The server was very polite but didn't seem to know much about serving."

  • "We enjoyed Sunday brunch. We had a table near the window which was very nice- widow was open and it was a beautiful day. The food was good. Our party of 4 was seated comfortably. Three people had the brunch buffet and one ordered from the al la carte menu. The food was good, service was good. We would definitely recommend this restaurant."

  • "Since we had good experiences in the past, we made reservations for a Sunday dinner. We had to wait longer than usual to be seated; after being warned that "we are going to sit this other group first". As is was starting to rain, we asked for inside seating. It took extra ten minutes to get that done. There were not too many customers present, however it took twenty minutes for us to just get water on the table. We gently reminded the host that we were ready to order. Nothing happened. Ten minutes later they started taking orders from the table next to us, where a group had just been seated. When we hit the thirty-minute mark we decided to leave. We received no apologies and the overall attitude was rude and unwelcoming. We wont' be back."

  • "Had Sunday brunch here, which was fabulous. 3-piece jazz combo playing, attentive service, buffet food was copious and well done, with a nice selection. It was a shade on the pricey side, but I'll be back; i just need to save up for it."

  • "I was at Redwood years ago and went on 6/17 because they gave us a reservation at the last minute, which they did honor. I didn't like it the first time I ate there and don't intend to go again."

  • "Not sure I can finger exactly why -- the very common food with a lack of originality and/or seasoning, the sense that, while helpful, the staff was bored, or the failure to use the space in a way that enhanced the dining experience or maybe the boring -- to the extreme -- brunch buffet, but the place just misses. Too bad. Enjoyed some good meals early in this restaurant's run but after a period away came away this time feeling flat."

  • "We had a wonderful dinner at Redwood. Notwithstanding a bit of a "service-with-a-frown" attitude from an underdressed (skinny jeans; her cohorts wore skirts paired with nice tops) and shockingly unprofessional lead hostess, we had a wonderful time. Our waitress was truly first rate: fun, personable, just attentive enough and well versed in all aspects of the menu. Three of the four of us were very hungry and opted for prix fixe selections, which were fairly reasonably priced. We had the pork loin (truly delicious), the rockfish special (melt in your mouth) and the filet mignon (quite good for that cut of beef). Starters: tuna tartare and calamari. Desserts were excellent as well, particularly the thankfully small-ish sundae."

  • "We loved this place and can't wait to come back. Two things that must not go unmentioned. my hubby had the honey panna cotta dessert...it was made in a solo cup! We could tell because the solo logo was on the top of the dessert...a little tacky! I had the smores. It needed more marshmallow. If you did not call it smores- I would have been happy with the choc. dessert but since it was called - smores- I expected marshmallow."

  • "We have eaten at this restaurant a number of times but they may have changed their chef. Most of our food came out either overcooked or undercooked or burnt. We had to send back our entrées twice. I would not recommend it to others"

  • "The food and service were OK, but not outstanding. Great place to spend some time dinner in the outside tables on Bethesda lane."

  • "Martini left much to be desired. I am not even sure it was a Grey Goose Martini. Son-in-law ordered a Manhattan. Both drinks were extremely skimpy to say the least. Meal was very rushed. You better not put your fork down or your meal will be swooped away. Had to stop the bus boy several times from taking a meal away that was not finished. The food is very good, but you are hardly given a chance to enjoy it. "

  • "Love the setting - we had an outside table, which was ideal for being able to enjoy conversation ~ service was fine ~ the only downer was the food. From salads to main course, it was just so-so. But we were in downtown Bethesda and for that reason I would recommend Redwood. Go for drinks and if interested in a good meal, go elsewhere"

  • "Really nice! Our table was in a corner, nice and intimate. Cory was an excellent waiter, the food, cocktails and wine were great. Not inexpensive, but would def go again for another special occasion. "

  • "Although we live in Virginia, we often come to this part of Bethesda. There are a few really good restaurants and this is certainly one of the best. We have been there a few times and we like to bring company over also. We love the cheeses and charcuterie. It's great to share. Rockfish was really nicely done."

  • "Went for lunch and chose the pick two, which is a great bargain at 16.00 as you get regular portion size. Loved their beet and goat cheese salad, fish tacos, and burger. Also highly recommend their dinner 3-course meals. "

  • "We celebrated our 24th wedding Anniversary with a younger couple at Redwood- It's a restaurant that I've wanted to try for it's American fare. We did the Prixe Fixe menu and then forgot that we should leave room for dessert! Our waiter was great, she knew the menu inside out. I had salmon (cooked well not rubbery), my spouse flat iron steak, a beautiful Med. rare. The rest of our party had the filet and burger, both raved how much they enjoyed the food (french fries) and despite the rain we had an enjoyable evening. Coincidentally- my spouse was on the USCGC Redwood when we were married. We'll be back again."

  • "Everything was great about my visit... from the service to the food. The menu is somewhat limited, but everything we ordered we really loved. It's a bit pricey, but worth it for a special occasion or a casual night out. I had the mussels, they were fantastic (although i did have to ask for bread as they came with fries instead.)"

  • "I don't understand this restaurant. A few months ago, four of us had dinner here and it blew us all away. Every dish - apps, entrees, dessert - fantastic. The drinks were great. This visit - just OK. And that's how it has gone over the years. It is usually just OK and then sometimes, they hit the heights. Which is why we return. Hoping for another one of those amazing meals. It is a beautiful restaurant, particularly in nice weather when the huge windows are open. The service is always good. But the cooking is just inconsistent. You expect this sometimes - chef on vacation, an off-night, whatever. But this place is so variable that you just never know what to expect. "

  • "Went for lunch/brunch following our son's First Communion. The food was excellent and the service was fantastic. It was easy to reserve a table for 6 on relatively short notice. I have walked past Redwood several times over the past couple of years and always thought that it looked interesting - I'm sorry we waited so long to try it. We strongly recommend it."

  • "Lovely space suitable for meeting friends for a good conversation. The windows were open to the walkway out front which was lovely the noise level was low, so we could hear each other. The food was mixed-- really good hamburger, but rockfish with fiddle heads was so-so. Salads were over dressed. Ice cream was delicious."

  • "Love the warm weather setup with outdoor tables facing the Bethesda Lane pedestrian mall and the huge windows opening up so that, even if you're eating inside you feel like you're partially outside. James, our server, was very good with a great, sardonic sense of humor and professional. The cheese/meat plate we had for an appetizer was very good, especially the pate campagne (made in-house!) and the coppa made in PA. My entree of roast chicken was ok. The chicken was overcooked and not much in the way of spices rubbed onto the skin but the accompanying wild rice pilaf with pickled ramps was very good as were the fried brussels sprouts that we ordered as a side. I had the sundae dessert which I could have made at home. Good though."

  • "We went to Redwood during restaurant week and ate from the special menu. Unfortunately the food did not have anything special. We did not like it, bad quality. Nevertheless it's a nice place"

  • "The place was incredibly loud. It was hard to hear the staff and they could not hear us. The food was nice but not incredible. The wait staff always seemed to be scrambling instead of moving calmly. "

  • "We had an 8:30 reservation on a Saturday night. We arrived at 8:25 and was told that it would be another 15 minutes because tables were slow to turn over. I again approached the hostess at 8:46 and she had no response as to when a table might be available. At that point, we left without having dinner. I will never go back to that restaurant. When the restaurant is at fault for not honoring a reservation, they should at a minimum be more sympathetic and give you a reasonable estimate when a table might be available."

  • "We've dined at Redwood a few times. The food is variable. It has never been poor, but while it has sometimes been excellent, other times it has been been, well, pretty good. Our most recent visit was one of the "pretty good" times. I had the pork tenderloin, which was delicious, but it tended to be overpowered by the sauces. Still, we intend to return soon. "

  • "Awesome restaurant. The food was excellent and the service is very efficient. The way they bring the food out and place it before you without even asking anyone, who got what, is very professional. They never get it wrong. Thanks for a great experience."

  • "My friend and I spent approximately $50 on the Easter jazz brunch buffet with bottomless mimosas. The bottomless mimosas kept coming, but the food was hard to find. When we first went to the buffet, there was a long line, but not because there were a lot of people there, but because people were waiting for all of the empty trays to be refilled. Almost everything on the buffet had run out and no one had come to replace it. It took quite a while."

  • "Had good food and great service. We were there early and the restaurant was not crowded at all. Imaginative food, great service in an pm upbeat setting."

  • "Redwood is nestled into Bethesda Row, although the map and instructions had us looking for "Hagar Lane". We have always seen the restaurant while shopping (across from Le Creuset store) and wanted to try it out. Without trying to, we ended up inside. We went on a Spring evening with the sun still shining but a cool breeze. The shelter of the complex cut off the breeze and only affected the sunlight later in the evening. The big, open windows were great for people watching at all times. The menu choices reflect their attempt to set their cuisine apart from the other restaurants, with twists and differences that sent us looking up some items on our cellphones. Yet, all four of us (2 Boomers, 2 Millennials) were happy with our selections. "
