Diner Reviews
  • "Wait service was poor and they appeared to be untrained: handling utensils at the wrong end; reaching across customer to give bread; never asking how the meal was; we had to ask if there was a desert and were never offered coffee. My Cesar salad was drenched in what tasted like Miracle Whip (I left 3/4 of it). Although there were only 6-7 tables occupied, we waited for over and hour to get our food. Students from local cooking school were suppose to be supervised by a chef although no one appeared to be in charge. A woman was taking ice cream orders from the cooking staff. It is a great location for attending the theatre, however, the total experience was so bad that we will not go back. Great entertainment!"

  • "The Drake Shining Band with Frank Simes, Jamie Hunting and Michael Leasure was the draw for us. Fantastic! The wine list and the food made the evening even better. We had a bottle of Cartlidge & Brown Zin, a plate of Rouge et Noir cheese and Grilled shrimp Caesar salads. Our server was clairvoyant, he was that good. Everything was perfect for a perfect evening. Many people joined our table that evening as well as band members and the waiter kept track of who ordered what and managed to split the tab flawlessly. I can't say enough about the experience. Superb midweek night out."

  • "This is our second time at the new location and although we loved the old location we love this place. The service and food was great. We Will be back!"

  • "Nice spot for dinner and music. Food was good. Brazilian jazz was nice."

  • "Brunch menu is very limiting . . almost bar food. And the "jazz" consisted of a lone piano player struggling with notes and chords. Saturday night dinner was a different matter. The menu offered excellent choices and the food was second to none! Kudos to the chefs. However, the "jazz" consisted of a guitar player and a bass player who started 30 to 45 minutes late. Their "jazz" was non-descript chord-change background music. They were said to also have a singer, but she was waiting to sing in a later set "because the diners were so noisy." Flash to singer . . you command the room and get them to listen to you by the quality of your talent! Go for the great dinner food . . expect nothing else."

  • "Makes sense if going to Playhouse, either beforeor after"

  • "Both the jazz and the food were high quality. What else is there to say?"

  • "Went to RWB for the first time before a performance at the Playhouse. It was late in the week and they were out of the premium Chardonays by the glass. The bar tender opened an excellent bottle from the bottle only list at our waitstaff request; very nice! The food was excellent, service was attentive but not pushy. I look forward to returning for a late night drink during a live jazz performance."

  • "next door to the Pasadena Playhouse so fun to make it a real night out with dinner and theater"

  • "I have been to Red White and Bluez a handful of times at the old location under the old ownership, which was always OK. However, the new owners/management have definitely improved the service and food. I have been to the new location once to the bar and once for dinner. Both occasions were great with great service and great food. The music has always been good which provides a nice atmosphere. My only knock is the dining area is much louder in the new location than the previous location...there doesn't seem to be any sound absorbing walls. Regardless, we will definitely be back and make it a part of our restaurant rotation."

  • "This place is perfect for a very nice adult night out!"

  • "My first visit at this location. Great restaurant and size. The music was too loud for a conversation and it was nice background jazz. The room is so small speakers are unnecessary. The halibut was delicious."

  • "I opted to sit in the bar and have dinner before attending a play next door. Food and wine were amazing but service was terrible. I sat at the bar for 10 minutes and still was not acknowledged by the bartender, I finally waved him down and got a menu. Still worth the experience but the service left a "seriously?" bad taste in my mouth."

  • "The quality of the food started out fine in the kitchen but arrive cold to me. I didn't say anything for the first course, but was surprised that it happened for my steak as well. The chef is presumptuous to assume that we don't need salt and pepper and on the table. It was hard to fine the wait staff to do who had the authority to do just that."

  • "I've been to Red White and Bluezz several times, and the bands have all been excellent. They generally have some jazz influence, often mixed with blues and/or rock influences, and occasionally some international flavor. The ability of the players has always been top tier."

  • "Arrived about 7 - when music was to start according to the website. Musicians did not actually begin playing until 8:15. No recorded music. Service was courteous - but our waiter nowhere to be found for long stretches at a time. Food was good but NOT specrtacular - portions small considering the cost. Musicians that eventually played were competent but 94.7 THE WAVE bland. THIS IS a pretty restaurant but - the pricing is too high when it can't produce SPECIAL in ANY of the categories i judge a restaurant by: food/entertainment/overall pleasure (includes attentive service)."

  • "Went for brunch to check out the new location for the first time, and was looking forward to the jazz duo. The acoustics were so poor that all we could hear was the chattering of the other diners, and had to strain to hear the music at all. Service was unhurried, to the point of being slow. The food was good, but they had already run out of what we wanted to order by 12:30. I will not bother to go back."

  • "This place thinks too much of itself. The noise level makes it impossible to hear the music, or yourself. The steak I ordered was tougher than my shoe and, for the price, a rip off. The portions couldn't feed a child. But, the place certainly has the "cool" factor down. Maybe that's why the cool people go. I won't again. Not cool enough, I guess. All of the ratings above are positive and I could not find one positive thing to say. I filled out "kid friendly so I could complete this review."

  • "Red White and Bluezz had a nice duo over our drinks and a really good trio over the later evening. Service was good food was good as well, they could use a few more simple eats. We sat for hours listening and taking in drinks. No crowd in the restaurant but the bar was full. "

  • "The res options were 9:45, 10:00, 10:15. I chose 10:00. We arrived on time. When we got there, the mgr rushed us to our seats saying that they were keeping the kitchen open for us. When my husband arrived a few mins earlier, she said "You're here for drinks right? Our kitchen is closing." Not very welcoming. Service was sporadic. We had to ask for bread, water wasn't refilled quickly, & the food is very inconsistent. Turkey burger was very dry & I've had to send food back before. We wanted dessert, but they said the kitchen staff had gone home! Didn't even offer us coffee! & THE MUSIC IS ALWAYS WAY TOO LOUD! There's nothing to absorb the sound. There are so few good jazz restaurants. We used to love this place but I hesitate coming now."

  • "The venue is too small for the volume of music played making it difficult to have a nice dining experience. We asked to be seated as far from the music as possible and still had difficulty having a conversation, my ears were ringing when we left. The food was OK. The waiter apparently forgot about us, we finally had to go find him to get a bill so that we could get to theater on time."

  • " Red's appetizers and small plates are wonderful and their attention to the entrees is as careful and imaginative. The bar area looks spectacular and the mixologist is superb. A great place to date or meet up. The view from the dining room after dark of the bandstand with Eliott Caine on Trumpet (the night we were there) and backlit by the glass wall with clear shelves and the shimmering liquors created visual magic. And the Pasadena Playhouse is right outside the door. We loved it."

  • "Went to the bar waiting for my guest. Ordered a drink, and the bartender was most friendly. My guest arrived. We were seated at a fairly small table, not much of a romantic seating, but ended up nice to have sat there because surrounding company was fun to dine with. The fish plate was excellent. My pork plate was almost room temperature when served. Music was quiet appropriate, not too loud. We ordered a cheese plate with some seasonal fruit to go. The waiter was accommodating in helping with the cheese selection by providing samples. Enjoyed his services. Perfect waiter! At the end of the evening, I left with a good feeling that that was a good choice to start our evening off. Thank you!"

  • "The food was good and the service was great, it was a loud room because of the high ceilings but the live music was great and not overpowering."

  • "It would be great if it were not so noisy! Location is perfect for a pre-theater restaurant, if you're going to the Pasadena Playhouse. It would also be great as a Jazz place if the clientele were there to listen to the music. They were not. The ambience, i.e., décor, etc., could have been so cool for a Jazz spot if not for the noise level -- screams from the bar area, etc. Food and service was good. So this should not be called a Jazz club - just a nice restaurant with mediocre entertainment in the background behind the noise."

  • "Next to the Pasadena Playhouse, this is a wonderful find that I hope will be around for a long time. The wait staff was attentive and helpful. The food was delicious--I had the pork shank and ate my fill and still had enough for another meal. We were there after an afternoon performance at the Playhouse. They weren't open, but allowed us to come in and sit at the bar (with a drink) while waiting for 5:00. They have live music every night--sometimes a group, but on Sunday it was just a violin. It was a wonderful accompanyment to a very satisfying evening. Go and eat! You'll have a wonderful time and help keep this place there! NO, I'M NO A SHAREHOLDER, FAMILY MEMBER OR RELATED TO ANYONE THERE--I JUST REALLY ENJOYED THIS PLACE! :)"

  • "The calamari, garlic mashed potatoes, bread and wine were all good, though we were very disappointed in the main dish. The fish was small and tasteless. We may only go back to this restaurant if we were seeing a show next door, but only to have appetizers and wine. Also, the band did not perform until well after it's start time and only played for a short while. We thought they would play blues, but it was more like jazz. The service was exceptional. It was as if all the servers helped each table instead of assigned areas, leaving us never without water or attendance."

  • "This is a very convenient place for a dinner or a drink before a performance at the Pasadena Playhouse but it doesn't come cheap. Entrees are in the mid 20's to 30's range - most is ala carte. A little pricey for food that is OK but not really great. But it is nice to simply walk a few steps to enter the Pasadena Playhouse."

  • "Bad first impressions from the off I'm afraid. We spoke to a guy at the desk who struggled to hear us over the noise (which became a recurring theme), who looked at us as if we'd asked him for one of his kidneys. He called a lady over who I assume was the manager, or his wife maybe!? We had booked a table. The place was half empty. Yet she again looked as if she was doing us a massive favour seating us at all. We sat down and ordered drinks and I proceeded to read the only menu on which I've ever been unable to find a single dish of interest on. The live act was absolutely average (but that's not their fault), however it was way too loud and located on a makeshift stage right next to door. We finished our drinks, paid the bill and left."
