Diner Reviews
  • "WE have enjoyed the excellent food, service and ambiance for this eclectic lunch group monthly for some time. We are always amazied with the quality service, attention to detail and excellent food preparations and presentations. Each of us looks forward to every visit to Red's and would encourage others to come out and enjoy it as well."

  • "Service was great. Food was good. Wine recommendation was perfect Restaurant is inviting and comfortable. Don't like always being seated at the small tables in back corner "hallway": too close/feels crowded to all the other "2 tops" which is where couples get seated-even with reservations."

  • "I've been to Red's several times and very rarely do they change the menu, however on this occasion they were offering a swordfish entree and it was amazing. The server was also great with recommending a wine that was very similar to one of my favorites."

  • "In the heart of downtown Rockford, Red's is always sure to please. From the complementary valet to the great service inside, the staff is top-notch. The menu has plenty of options for everyone and the food is always fresh and prepared just how I ask. The wine list is expansive and the drink menu is creative while still keeping the basics. This is our go-to spot when we're looking for a nice night out or have family visiting from out of town."

  • "Made a reservation through Open Table 4 or 5 days ahead of time. Unfortunately ended up with table for 2 right behind hostess check in on upper level and felt like I was dining in the middle of a busy intersection. Despite the congestion the food was good but the filet I had was average considering the price. Wine was also good but a bit pricey. Will go back again when I can take advantage of the wonderful river view."

  • "Years ago we LOVED the food at Red's. Then there was a new chef, or new ownership, or something along those lines (not sure on the details, but anyways, there was a change). We went once after the change, spent a little over $100 on a not-so-good meal and decided we may stop going. The thing is, our mom still thinks we love the place and gets us a $75 gift card for Christmas every year. And every year the food disappoints. We thought that maybe since we're going just once per year, it was just bad luck/we were catching the kitchen on an off-day. It's been an "off-day" the last 5 times we've been there. We're telling her to stop getting us gift cards."

  • "Certainly fine for other occasions as well, but add the ambiance to the excellent food and service and we'll be returning to Red's annually for my wife's birthday celebration. And I'll be lobbying to go there for mine!"

  • "6 of us hit Reds for a 2nd weekend in a row. We do love this place. Each of us had a salad (Pear Stilton is phenominal sans the Stilton lol). 3 of us had filets. The other 3 had scallops, a delmonico & swordfish. We all had desserts. The creme brulee is superb. Reds is as good as any in Grand Rapids. The service is first rate."

  • "Had dinner with a business associate, she liked the short ribs …I was going to order the filet as I do everywhere… waitress suggested the Delmonico …. OH YES… it was awesome. Much better than just a filet."

  • "My wife and I have dined at Reds numerous times, and every time we have been beyond satisfied. This trip was no different. We had a party of 6 including 2 children. There wasn't a plate that came to the table that wasn't fabulous. My Delmonico steak (highly recommend) was grilled to perfection as was every item the others had. Our server had great interaction but was not at all pushy. He was great with our children who are only 3 and 5 years old. I will definitely be going back again and again."

  • "Went for dinner on Saturday night. Service was good as was the environment. Food was pretty average and meals strangely paired. My wife ordered the salmon, she eats healthy and seemed like the obvious choice. Salmon was really good and cooked perfectly but the side was a potato grattan that was 90% cheese and butter, she wouldn't eat it. I ordered chili crusted skirt steak, it had good flavor and was cooked perfectly but was a little too hot (and I like things hot). Palenta on the side was great."

  • "Went here with a party of 6, 2 kids, 4 adults. For what I had anticipated as an upscale restaurant is far from that. First the service, for a party of 6 that took our time the service was at best mediocre. Late drinks, no bread, and plates delivered at staggered times...c'mon man. You need to improve. The food was "hot". Is this a southwest restaurant where everything has some "heat" in it? Crab cakes with a hot sauce? Douse a filet with pepper? A fair rating is all this establishment deserves. Nice environment, but needs the food and service to match. I'll give it until late spring and maybe try again. Hopefully something changes."

  • "The place was dimly lit with a warm fire that made for a relaxing winter evening. The service was helpful and friendly, yet unobtrusive. The salad ws fresh and tossed before serving, which was a nice touch. I ordered the sirloin, medium rare with mushrooms, which was done to perfection, slightly charred on the outside and tender and juicy within. It was huge, and a leftover provided another excellent meal the next day. I did not like the bananas foster, which was too large with too much bread. My dining partner had the berry cobbler, which was more palatable and made a better presentation."

  • "We had a perfect birthday celebration at Red. The wine list is varied. The food is amazing! The service was spot on. Every little detail was well tended to. Highly recommend you book a table and enjoy a fantastic mean at Reds."

  • "It took awhile for our waitress to arrive with water but overall she was good. I've never had a bad meal at Red's. My only "cons" - it was cold in the restaurant, I felt somewhat rushed and it could not have been because the table was needed. Finally, when I go to Red's I dress up. It was disappointing to see people in jeans and hooded sweatshirts. That part of the restaurant ambiance has changed and not for the better."

  • "First trip to Red's for Mom's birthday. She needed to use my iPhone flashlight to read the menu. Very good variety on the menu. All 4 of us chose fish (salmon, seafood chowder, swordfish) and unanimously voted the food outstanding. Server never brought bread and let the drinks stand empty after the first round was gone, but the place was crazy busy on a Friday night. I'd go back for the food."

  • "Our family dines at Red's a few times each year but this past holiday season was a disappointment. My Mother and I both ordered the scallops with mushroom risotto. My dish was so salty that I couldn't take more than a few bites. The scallops were also overcooked so they were hard. My Mother finished hers but said the dish was marginal at best. Now I should have talked with the waitress but everyone else was happy with their steaks! The waitress was very busy did her best. The server couldn't get anyone's dish right. Now the drinks were excellent and we always enjoy the calamari. With so many great new restaurants in GR, we won't be heading back to Red's any time soon. So sad."

  • "Six of us went to Reds for a special evening. It's a beautiful setting and there is no doubt the restaurant wants to provide a top dining experience. I have two comments that detracted from that experience: 1) The food, though fresh and beautifully cooked, was LOADED with salt. Such a heavy hand that the risotto, the blue cheese bread pudding, some of the scallops and one lamb chop were eatable but quite unpleasant. 2) In an effort to insure our good experience, staff from the restaurant visited the table to ask time and time again. The chef came twice, the manager or owner came, the waitress of course, and someone else. I felt interrupted rather than cared for."

  • "Always a great meal with great service. Sit by the fire pit in the winter or by the river or outside in he summer. Everyone is friendly, great atmosphere and wonderful service. Not inexpensive but overall a wonderful dining experience."

  • "Loved the experience EXCEPT, the portions were small. My friend had four medium sized scallops with four asperagus (she did not want the potatoes). Her entre was $38. My husband ordered lamb chops, got two. The food we got was well prepared and tasted good, we were all disappointed in the portion sizes for the price."

  • "Food and service were great, and we will return regularly. I just want to note that they automatically add a 20 percent tip, even for our party of two. I bet lots of people don't look that closely and tip on the total. Also, we would have tipped more generously if that hadn't annoyed us, so the wait staff lost out."

  • "Good times had by all . Our group of 4 were greeted at the door and quickly seated. Our server introduced herself and reviewed the specials. She offered up a great wine that everyone was pleased with. Our meals were prepared perfectly Chef Glen came out and checked on how everything was. After dinner we sat and chatted with friends for a little while and the wait staff continued to be very attentive. I Very highly recommend Reds on the River"

  • "Food and service were very good. However, from an ambience perspective, I called early on the day of our reservation and asked for their "most special table for 6" to ensure our team felt extra special for our holiday celebration. The receptionist said she would make a note of it. However, when we arrived, we were seated at a table right by the hostess stand and far away from any of the windows that provide such a beautiful view. When our waitress arrived, I mentioned my request and asked if the table we were seated at was considered "special" for some reason. She replied that the seats by the window were often too cold to be seated at during cooler weather. If you're going for the view, make sure it's during warmer weather."

  • "Overall, we were very pleased. It was not busy on Monday night and our party of four celebrated a birthday with salmon, swordfish, filet and Delmonico. Unfortunately, both the salmon and Delmonico were undercooked and the steak was sent back. Otherwise, the service was excellent, attentive but not fussy."

  • "First time here. Our server was excellent and very knowledgable. I asked her to pair a wine for my dinner selection and she was spot on. The Chef's island chowder was very good but I felt it was a little bland, the squash bisque my wife had was excellent and perfectly seasoned. The main courses were both very good and the deserts, especially the blueberry cobbler were the perfect ending. I would dine here again without hesitation."
