Diner Reviews
  • "The service couldn't have been better, but it was disappointed The cheese biscuits were overdone and the Cesar dressing tasted bland. I'm chalking it upas a blip, because I've been there before and the food was quite good. "

  • "We ordered a ton of food because we were hungry. It was all spectacular. Portions are not too big. Good was very flavorful. Great waitstaff even if the waiter rushed us to order. I think he did it to benefit us because he knew how things flow when the restaurant gets full ---- and it got packed as we say there. "

  • "I come back to the redeye, again and again. The food is great. Their desserts, outrageous. I always have a marvelous waitperson. this evening I had a great piece of halibut. The salad was good and everyone else enjoyed their mains as well (crab cake, salmon and sushi). My one complaint this evening, for which I docked them a star was the presentation of the warm cookie at the end of the evening. I love this in this restaurant, They walk around with the cookie sheet right from the oven. On this evening, however, the server was shoving the sheet in our faces, making it uncomfortable and awkward to take the cookie being offered. It felt rude and unprofessional."

  • "Our waiter was great we sat in the room to the right and the scene was nice"

  • "While the food is a bit pricey, the place is elegant and the food is superb. Staff was accomodating. We were early for our reservation and were comfortably seated in the lounge area. However, the champagne brunch was not champagne - it was sparkling wine. We were going to have the 1 lb lobster and eggs for brunch as this was shown on the restaurant website; but when we got the menu, it now became a 2 lb lobster and obviously much more expensive. The on line site should change to reflect this. We were not rushed to get out and felt good to eat so elegantly."

  • "The food is consistently well prepared and presented at this mainstay New York fish restaurant. This week was no exception. I come here often for both lunch and dinner. The service is always outstanding. Unfortunately, it was not on this particular lunch day. It won't stop me from going back."

  • "Great for a business/social luncheon. I always ask for the small room on the right on entrance. Oysters are my standby. Their miso matzo ball soup is terrific. My colleague had that. I had the great new England clam chowder. Salads are among the best."

  • "Very disappointed with the food quality for the price. Had the Lobster pot pie and was overcooked and dried out and the lobster was tough and chewy. Service was poor. Would not go back."

  • "Red Eye Grill is in a great location with large windows to look out to all of NYC....you know you are in New York. The service was great. The room is large and inviting and the noise level is such that having a good conversation is possible. It's got a lot going for it but my Caesar Salad was boring......some of what we ordered was good and some was not so good. AND, for me, the prices did not justify the quality.....for that reason I would not frequent this location. However, I would recommend, on occasion."

  • "lunch was really terrific...the quality of the food is fantastic...staff was super attentive and knowledgable about their menu....was really pricey for lunch for two people $158...Yikes...would not go again for lunch unless someone was taking me but it was a birthday celebration. The sushi lollipops were terrific. The New England Clam chowder was good though i wouldn't call it a clam chowder...its more of a potato bacon soup...which was good...clams were lost in there as bacon will pretty much over power anything...calamari terrific and the crabcake with shrimp was great too...creamed spinach pretty tasty...A top notch lunch at a wallet crushing price."

  • "I have been coming to this restaurant for years, and it never disappoints. The food and service are always spot on. The fish is fresh, well prepared and well presented. I usually get the pepper encrusted tuna. It is perfection. The brussel sprouts are excellent as a side dish."

  • "Chose this place based on proximity to the NY City Center. Beautiful new renovated setting and very nice staff including a warm greeting by the maitre d upon arrival. Very seasoned older crowd. Delicious seafood but extremely expensive. Be prepared. $300 for shared seafood appetizer, bottle of wine , 2 entrees, one dessert ( The INCREDIBLE banana cream pie) and coffee. Guess shouldn't have been surprised considering the neighborhood, near Central Park West and Carnegie Hall. But would have to be a very special occasion to return or recommend when so many other NYC options."

  • "We arrived at 11:30 on a Sunday and it was blessedly quiet. We talked for quite a while before we ordered and the waiters were fine with it. Nice atmosphere and lots of good brunch choices. Our out-of-town guests were impressed."

  • "Consistant and delicious! Our experience of eating lunch there regularly before Encores Matinee at City Center has been great. They try hard to please - a server of chocolate with almonds for a sweet when you leave, to a choice of special rolls and bread when you sit down. The menu is so varied that there is something for everyone. We haven't eaten dinner at Redeye Grill, but I'm sure that it would be good. For concert goers at Carnegie, and theater goers at City Center, there's nothing better in the neighborhood -- especially with the quiet elegance of Redeye Grill. If anything, I would like to see some of the prices come down. But that's true of all the places we like."

  • "This is the second time we have been to this restaurant, both when we had tickets to see a performance at Carnegie Hall. It is large and has many tables but the tables are separated a bit so you are not sitting right on top of everyone else. There is a bit of a din once it fills up but not so great that you can't hear the other people at your table. The waiter was pleasant, very conscious of when you needed to be done by to make the performance and was present without being overbearing. The 4 of us ordered a wide variety of food from clams and oysters to fish to pasta to steak. Our son, an avid fish eater, said that his fish was the best he had ever had. My steak was very good, as well. Generous portions."

  • "The seafood platter was delicious. We shared this as a main course and thoroughly enjoyed the selection of clams, oysters, crabmeat, jumbo shrimp and calamari. Redeye is always super busy on evenings when Carnegie Hall has a performance, but the staff always makes sure that you are able to enjoy your meal at the pace needed to get you to the performance on time. They have some lovely touches like the warm cheddar biscuits and cookies they come around with. The bar area is also a lovely spot since it was redone - a great place for a drink with nice sitting areas as well as seats at the bar. Great choice for an evening out."

  • "Excellent dining experience for celebratory event. Ordered a bottle of Dom Perignon to be delivered to the table on arrival, and it worked, and arranged with server to use my credit card with added gratuity so there would be no fuss about who would pick up the bill The food was excellent, and the Dover sole was especially good. Service was attentive always, but never obtrusive. The noise level is always high before 8, when the theater/concert crowd begins to flood out, but after that a comfortable conversation can be had. Recommend a booth for that reason before 8 PM."

  • "My wife and I dined at the Redeye Grill before a concert at Carnegie Hall. We were asked if we preferred a quiet spot and were put in a nice room at the back. Even after it filled up, it was pleasant. The service was excellent and the food was very good. It WAS a bit pricey, but I had expected that. I had lobster & crab lasagna, and my wife had crusted tuna. Both were excellent but, like entrees at most restaurants these days, came with little or no accompaniment. Of course sides could be ordered. The chocolate almond cake for dessert was good too."

  • "Third time there, and I won't be going back anytime soon. I think they clearly cannot handle the crowds of diners that warmer weather is bringing. We were seated in the back, and the waiter ignored us repeatedly, had to flag him down for water, bread and to take our drink order. When the took the drink order, he suggested we make our dinner selection at that time. Didn't know when he would get back. Every other time I have eaten there, service was impeccable....perhaps you don't sit in the back."

  • "The restaurant on a Monday at noonish was not crowded, but filled up after 1:00pm. The table was good and the service excellent. The waiter gave us plenty of time for our drinks before we ordered. We both had the same thing….Cobb salad with chicken. The portion was huge and perhaps the waiter could suggest we share one and have a different main to share too.as we would have had variety and enjoyed the sharing. I also thought the salad was ice-cold showing it had been made in advance..only the dressing was tossed at the table. Wine was good. the chocolate was seres in a big covered dish, but there was no implement to take it with…….it would have been more p.c. to have a tongs.Noticed the shoeshiner, the mouthwash with cups,,good touches"

  • "My guests and i enjoyed every minute, dining at the Red Eye Grill . I would recommend this fine restaurant to everyone i know. Every employee has such great passion in what they do and the food is outstanding, it blows top steak and seafood houses of NYC out of the water."

  • "What an exceptional dining experience! Returning to Redeye after a not-so-positive experience, we were treated like royalty. Everyone from the Maître D (Alessandro) to our server (Maureen) rolled out the red carpet to make our lunch special. Even going so far as to make an off the menu request from scratch. The food was excellent as usual. My wife loves the fish and we never miss the banana cream pie. We’ve always had great service at all the Fireman Hospitality restaurants and this was no different. Also a special thanks to the General Manager Fabien. We are New Yorkers (by heart and spirit if not location) and we will always make Redeye a ‘must stop’ on our travels."

  • "Dinner for two plus two glasses of wine ran $200. A bit pricey (even for New York City), but the food was excellent and we had a great time. I guess that's what it's all about!"

  • "Fish cooked perfectly--service great, except when the bus boy brought the choice of bread with only 3 little pieces on the tray-must say he did come back later with more choices-"

  • "we went here for a special occasion, and we had a great time. the menu is solid (not the best if you're a vegetarian, but then the name of the place should be a warning of that), the decor is great, and best of all the wait staff & bartenders are trained to a T."

  • "It had been several years since I last ate at the Redeye Grill. Now I remember why. This reliable Carnegie Hall neighbor was pleasant and the food was fine. But, the price tag was significant for what the restaurant represents. Overall, it was good, but watch for the sticker shock at the end of the meal."

  • "We have had dinners at the Redeye Grill many times over the past year. and have continually had an excellent meal, enah nced by a terrific and friendly waitstaff. The fish dishes were prepared to order and consideration was given to food allergies. We would highly recommend Redeye for anyone wanting a truly great meal, without feeling that they are in a tourist restaurant."

  • "While everyone in our party loved the food, service, and ambience, we all agreed that the fish selections were prepared and presented in a "perfect" way. The miso cod was amazing, and the tuna was almost beyond description. Perhaps the best clam chowder I've had in NY. And the host periodically appeared with did-bits of joy from the chef ranging from cheese toasts to chocolate chip cookies at the end. A DEFINITE return for us!"

  • "The food was excellent but the prices are rather high. The drinks were small and very pricey. $16 for what was little more than an ounce of bourbon is off the wall. Our service was excellent and very attentive. The main reason for our being there was the location close to Carnegie Hall. Probably a fine place to dine for out of town visitors."

  • "Even though the name of this place may evoke images of a greasy-spoon diner next to a truck stop, it is actually a very elegant and convenient restaurant. The menu is eclectic, definitely something for everyone, including comfort food as well as some exotic. Excellent food, very friendly staff, and congenial ambience. For a Carnegie Hall event it is absolutely the best place, before or after the concert. Delightful experience."

  • "The Redeye Grill is across the street from Carnegie Hall and is a perfect pre-concert dinner location! A bit expensive but the food is delicately prepared and you do have to pay for location !"
