Diner Reviews
  • "We had heard that their burger was great, so we tried it. Indeed it was great. Also, the service was fantastic. Friendly and paying attention to detail."

  • "Had I not gone to the Hotel Monaco, I would not have known what an excellent restaurant was hidden there. Very attentive waitstaff, delicious cuisine and reasonable (not low), prices. Elegant."

  • "I did the dining month menu. Adequate starter; I had the beet salad. The brevette steak as my main, and exceedingly average, Dessert was the fried ice cream, which was lovely.. Service was painfully slow. I am a solo diner and was "treated" to a poorly situated table by the door. The best part of this restaurant is that it is connected to the Hotel Monaco."

  • "Great dining experience. Friendly staff, good food, outstanding dessert. Special acknowledgement of birthdays."

  • "I was on the fence between two items. After chatting it over with my server, she made a recommendation that was off my radar, and was I glad I listened to her! Wine selection was easy to navigate, paired great with my entree. Was very pleased to find Red Star and will happily come back!"

  • "I haven't been to Portland for a while and the hotel Monaco was as good is I remember. Had a great dinner with my daughter and two granddaughters at the Red Star and I must confess I had forgotten just how good a place it is. Great and funny waiter."

  • "First time I've been here for lunch. Great menu selection and food, service and ambiance was great!"

  • "Must try the pork chop. Amazingly good and great presentation."

  • "My wife and I used the Red Star for our Wedding Reception two years ago. They took care of us well then, and continue to everytime we come in to eat. I loved how the server was conversational, but not over the top. The food was great as always and we love the atmosphere."

  • "Met a friend for brunch here. The Red Star does a consistently good breakfast; even their oatmeal is good! On this morning I had the red flannel omelet that had wagyu brisket, goat cheese and a molasses bbq sauce. It was very tasty. The fresh fruit that I had with it was a nice mix - not the usual winter melon melange (though there was melon). It was accompanied by a really tasty whole grain toast. Beyond the food, the service was attentive without being intrusive; friendly but not overbearing. All in all a good meal."

  • "The sausage soup very bland. Bread smelled good but no taste to it, did not like salt on the butter it came with. Pork chops were cooked perfected but once again no taste."

  • "We love Red Star. On our last visit, the hostess with the sides of her head shaved was unfriendly to the point of near-rudeness. Good food (despite recent cost-cutting measures), and great service overall, but hosting (especially this time) can be...bleh."
    Dined on 2/17/2014
  • "Although we had to wait almost an hour for dinner to be delivered (Valentine's day rush perhaps), the food really was good enough to be worth it (the complementary dessert didn't hurt either). The staff was able to move us to a different table due to a draft. The burger was excellent. Would visit again."

  • "Dined at Red Star 2/14 for a business lunch (6 people). The ambiance was busy and moderatley loud so it didn't seem like others could hear our conversation. However, it also made it hard to hear one another. The service was fine. The menu was different from the last time I ate at Red Star. Previously, I liked the restaurant for their salads and pizzas made in their open oven. The current menu had neither. The burgers got good reviews from the group but the fish and chips (tasted by 2 people) were mushy. The whole bowl (salad with quinoa, beans, tomatoes, and chicken in a vinagrette), was also mushy. I prefer the street car version a couple blocks away. There was nothing that would bring me back to Red Star, other than the good location."

  • "We are staying at Hotel Monaco. Needed an easy place to eat. This was wonderful. Main dishes were all flavorful. Ice cream was excellent."

  • "Just can't get enough of Red Star's bacon wrapped jalapeños! We ordered off the small plates menu, brisket, wings, everything was really good and the service was awesome! We ended up stopping in 2 more times for drinks and snacks during our weekend stay downtown!"

  • "This was a awesome place went there with a group of friends for my wife's birthday The food was amazing, had the pacific burger!! The service was awesome had a great time."

  • "Rusty was our server. He was very attentive. He was funny, but not in an intrusive way. He was friendly. He gave us some excellent recommendation for dinner. We were not disappointed. If we are ever in Portland again we will definitely visit again."

  • "Have eaten at Red Star before, but they changed the menu and have fewer choices. I found this disappointing. Some people might like that there are fewer choices. The food itself was ok, not great. Ambiance is good."

  • "Went on a Saturday for brunch and it was great! Ambience was nice, food was incredible and service was very good. Overall I enjoyed it and would definitely eat there again."

  • "I chose to eat at Red Star for my final meal before surgery and celebrate a late Christmas with my family in town from Idaho and it was fabulous. The muscles were steamed to perfection to start our meal. My father and I chose to share the Porterhouse steak and it was one of the best steaks I have ever had. The Bourbon Apple Tart was divine. The service was a bit slow especially since the restaurant was not full. The only small mystery to our experience was when a martini arrived in a vintage champagne goblet. I wpuld highly recommend Red Star to any foodies!"

  • "We say at the Monaco when in Portland and Red Star is their in-house restaurant. Great local beer and food. Friendly service."

  • "Good food, great atmosphere and diverse crowd. The menu was very well priced for the quality of food. Extensive beer and wine list and attentive staff."

  • "I've always found Red Star to serve enjoyable food, with good service at a convenient downtown Portland location. I would recommend it for lunch, after work drinks, or dinner."
    Dined on 12/19/2013
  • "The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. They honored our coupons, and made us want to go back to Red Star again soon."
    Dined on 12/17/2013
  • "We were staying at the Hotel Monaco and thought this was the hotel restaurant. It is not. Instead, its a tavern type place with finger foods and small plates, some of which are not good at all and some of which are just good. A young group's place, fairly cheap, but not a date site, a business dinner, or sit down nice dinner with the wife."
    Dined on 12/14/2013
  • "This is my second time here. The brisket was great the first time and good the second time. The beets were a bit over cooked but still good. The same waiter was with me both times and was wonderful the first visit. The second visit he started out weak (not very friendly and didn't explain a dish that my friend asked about) but as the evening continued he warmed up."

  • "Food is good quality, but fairly expensive for a lunch compared to other similar places all over nearby. I would recommend, but not somewhere I would go on a weekly basis due to the high price for a normal lunch."
    Dined on 12/13/2013
  • "So very glad we were able to dine there. Considering that they were without power for at least three days the staff did a marvelous job of bringing everything back on line so seamlessly. We were very fortunate to have a wait staff that was well informed and had a marvelous sense of humor. My guess is that is the type of personality that is employed by Red Star. The small plates were excellent -had both the octopus and mushroom with a rib eye for the entree."

  • "We were seated on time. Table service was fairly good but nothing extraordinary since the restaurant wasn't near full. Kitchen service was very slow considering there just wasn't that many people in the restaurant. Menu is just plain odd."
    Dined on 12/7/2013
  • "Although the service was a little slow getting started, and between courses on a lightly attended evening, everyone easily found several items of interest on the menu, and sharing a broad selection from the menu family style resulted in happy smiles and taste buds all around. Drinks from the bar (lemon drop, Spanish coffee and hot Toddy) were tasty, if a little light on their alcohol content according to those who tried them. The menu used to be more adventurous, but everything was well prepared and tasty for our family. All agreed our desire for comfortable surroundings and comfort food on a cold wet night were met!"

  • "It was quiet - but also not unexpected for a Sunday night dinner. However, the steak was highly recommended, and the two diners that ordered it thought it was very fatty and overrated. I had a small plate of brisket which was not well paired with cabbage; the best dinner was, by far, the hamburger and fries! It just did not seem very lively or exciting to have a nice dinner with friends."
    Dined on 11/24/2013
  • "I felt fooled by reviews and online presence. Not comparable to all the wonderful restaurants in Portland. But it did have seating available."
    Dined on 11/25/2013
  • "My husband and I went to dinner with my aunt and uncle. We were early so we opted to eat dinner in the bar. Food was delicious. We shared several plates, but wedge salad, the chicken wings and the steak were delicious. The only problem with sitting in the bar was the service was a little slow. I would eat there again."
    Dined on 10/24/2013
  • "Kimptons always have great restaurants. They have a November special of three courses for $35. There are very little menu restrictions. This is the restaurant for the hotel Monaco. Great value and more than enough food. It tasted great."
    Dined on 11/2/2013
  • "Thanks for making our first anniversary celebration even more exciting with a surprise champagne toast. Red Star is always my choice when my husband wants to go to a steakhouse. It's one of the only steakhouses to offer actual vegetarian options--not just mashed potatoes or a side of asparagus. Service is always fantastic, whether it's a special occasion or not."
    Dined on 10/26/2013
  • "We got the share plates: brisket, lamb, and steak with a side of mashed potatoes. The steak was excellent. Half of the small portion of brisket was all fat, and the lamb portion was enough for 4-6 bites and left a lot to be desired on flavor. Our wine was good and the service was excellent. The bill was not worth it for the food we ate. Not sure we will go back."

  • "Good food but the lunch menu is better. Dinner seemed mostly thick enormous slabs of dead animal. The sides were delicious. Miss the old skillets of cornbread that were a regular feature years ago"
