Diner Reviews
  • "I actually found this to be a really nice restaurant. The food was good. We had the crab cake, elk, chilean sea bass along with the 5 layer velvet cake. They were all very good. The salad was a little heavy on the dressing but as mentioned rest were very good. Strong wine list. Excellent service, would definitely come back when I'm in the area."

  • "We were celebrating a special occasion with family, and enjoyed an evening of lovely dining. Several groups were also celebrating, so the noise level was elevated, but festive. The big groups may have challenged the kitchen a little, as there was a big gap between salads and the arrival of our entrees, but the food was great. We appreciated the friendly service as well."

  • "We'd heard a lot about this place--how outstanding it was, etc. We wanted to make sure to eat here. It is good, no doubt about it, just not great. Service was good, but servers could be more forthcoming with explaining what's on one's plate. Good deal for the four-course menu paired with wine--just $75 (which is a bargain most places.) VERY meat heavy menu. Nothing really wrong, just OK. Heavy decor and a table up against a wall made us feel a bit closed in."

  • "I ordered the rib eye steak and my friend ordered the strip. The rib eye was only about 1/2" thick, so I was VERY disappointed in it. I wanted it med rare and it was barely pink. The strip was great, about 1 1/2" thick and perfectly cooked. Service was acceptable but not great. The server had a large party seated after us and that required a lot of attention. They were out of asparagus and substituted brussel sprouts, not something I would have done. The grilled caesar salad was OK. I wouldn't make an effort to go back."

  • "Although Red Stag Grill is not inexpensive, I believe it is worth the price. They have a wonderful menu, very good food, and great service. We come here every year when we come to Asheville"

  • "We chose Red Stag Grill because we were looking for a "midday date" sort of feel. It was perfect. The hotel in which it is located is quite unique and beautiful. The staff is very accommodating and knowledgeable. This was our first experience in this particular restaurant, but it won't be our last."

  • "Well worth the price for everything except the monkfish, which was bland. We will be back."

  • "We ate at the Red Stag for dinner after touring the Biltmore. It was a nice restaurant with great atmosphere and interesting decor. We had the 5 course special with wine sampling and totally enjoyed it. Our waiter was friendly and very informative."

  • "The restaurant fell far short of the service/quality of the hotel. When you are billed as one of the outstanding destinations in Asheville, NC., one would expect all areas of the hotel to have high standards. Unfortunately, the food was ok at best, but not worth returning to the hotel. The appetizer was fine, and my wife's trout was fine. The wine selection was very good. You fell short on the ambience aspect by not having table cloths. My filet was not disappointing. The wedge salad was a very poor excuse and looked as though it was an afterthought. I almost sent it back, but that is not my style. The mac/cheese looked as though it came form a box, and was not hot nor tasty. Where was the food mgr. for inspecting ea. dish???"

  • " The staff was terrific. The food...plentiful and so very tasty! We had the 5 course tasting paired with wine and everything was spot on. Serving size and flavor was perfect! We also had the mussels as an appetizer...Wow so good! The Bison Ribeye, I would recommend it if you like a leaner cut of meat, somewhere between a sirloin and a strip. Very little game taste. My medium rare was cooked perfectly. However I would recommend getting a glaze on it for more flavor. If you are looking for that buttery fatty goodness of a ribeye, stick with the beef. The braised greens I had on the side were amazing! The Elk tenderloin is a must. And must have the lava cake. Yum! We will be returning!"

  • "Our fourth trip to the Red Stag, each experience seems to build expectations for the next trip. Our server Genee was incredibly friendly and well prepared. Table was ready promptly at our reservation time. Food as always was incredible!"

  • "Four of us dined at Red Stag the other night and couldn't be more pleased. The best of each course were the grilled caesar salad (sounds terrible on paper, but it was delicious), the fried green tomatoes (reminiscent of Joe's Stone Crab in South Beach), the skull splitter beer, the Elk Tenderloin (by far the best) and the apple pie. Other bright points were the wedge salad (above average) and the coffee rubbed steak special."

  • "Food was prepared to perfection with amazing use of spice, however I had food provisioning two hours after. I notified management to remove the sea bass, as I was the only one in my party to become ill and only one to consume sea bass, and they were reluctant and inquisitive. Had different decisions been made by management I would recommend Red Stag, however I am unable to, due to fear this could occur again."

  • "The atmosphere is unique and enjoyable. The service of the wait staff and bar staff was great. Unfortunately the same cannot be said of the experience with the menu. On two consecutive evenings, the menu, which is somewhat limited but appears interesting, had entrée and appetizer items listed that were not available. Additionally, on one evening, a dish that contained pate was served without the pate with no further explanation until we asked about its absence. We were told they were out of pate. The pate was the reason for ordering the dish. The food was prepared well but somehow the supplies were not adequate -- too bad. The Red Stag Grill is one of the reasons we selected the Grand Bohemian, which was also disappointing."

  • "I'm not opposed to expensive meals when the food matches the price. The cowboy ribeye $47 was overcooked. My wife ordered ribeye medium and I order medium rare. They came out backwards. That wouldn't have been big deal if the steak had any flavor. Very bland, not dry aged or salted very well. Go to Ruth ' s Chris just down the street if food is really important. Appetizer (mussels) and dessert were very good though."

  • "The server gave himself a $25 charge tip over and above what I wrote on the bill. Still under investigation with VISA. He was more interested in watching the World cup Soccer game at the bar than taking care of the patrons. Brought the wrong salad with nuts after being told that my wife was highly allergic to them. Never brought a bottle of wine we ordered and thus loss the charge for the bill"

  • "Two of my colleagues from neighboring states and I meet quarterly in Asheville for a business lunch and/or short retreat. We have chosen various restaurants and hotels around the city, but when it comes my time to host, I prefer the Grand Bohemian. The atmosphere is pleasant and beautiful and the staff is efficient and accommodating. We are always able to relax, meet and enjoy the occasion. The food is good and the service is great. We all three recommend your hotel and restaurant to friends and associates, and I especially hope we return very soon to the Grand Bohemian and Red Stag Grill. Thank you!"

  • "My wife and I went for a special occasion and enjoyed our leisurely 2 hour dinner. The service was impeccable and the food was interesting, tasteful, and well presented. Though expensive I felt the value there was reasonable. The only issue was that we were seated close to the bar so the noise level was a bit higher than expected."

  • "This is a game rich dining experience reminiscent of noble dining in the castles of Old Europe. The food was simple but excellent, with a generous variety of steaks, fish, and game. My family's meals ranged from the Grouper to Grass Fed Filet to the Elk and finally the Bison Ribeye. We were all very pleased. Restaurant decor and setting get very high marks. They have an excellent selection of locally raised meats and vegetables and in this regard are true to Asheville's eat local roots. Sometimes food at its simplest is best. This was an excellent dinner, our second time at this restaurant, and we will be back. Our only gripe is they did not have any chicken or other fowl on the menu that evening which would be a welcome addition."

  • "I have always enjoyed the food at Red Stag, but felt there was nothing on the menu to set them apart from the other fine restaurants Asheville has to offer. I also felt the dollar to food value was too high relative to the menu selections. After lunch on Father's Day I ahve been converted. My wife I enjoyed a fine a lunch as I can recall. We started with the Morrocan Style Calamari app which was very unique and perfectly prepared. I had the Meatloaf and my wife had the "Double-Down BLT" (one of best sandwiches either of us have ever eaten). The meatloaf was paired with the Swiss Style "Hash Browns", Mushroom Gravy and Asparagus, all perfect. The BLT had too many ingredients to list here, go to the restaurant and order it now."

  • "My wife wanted to eat at this restaurant the last time we were in Asheville but we were staying on the other side of town. We made reservations and walked from our hotel and hoped for a good meal. We couldn't have found a better place!! The salads were fabulous. .. I had the short ribs and she had the lamb chops. More food than we could finish. The vegetables were fantastic and the cheesecake although unconventional was also great. Michael our server cared about our meal and service and it showed. All in all dinner was a 10! Can't wait to go back."

  • "Went for a special meal to cap off a week of vacation in Asheville with my wife. Waitress was congenial and eager to be helpful. Service was quite slow even by Carolina standards but that was OK for us. They offered some very nice wines by the glass which was a plus and were happy to touch up a mixed drink to make it just right. Unfortunately, one dish came lukewarm and the other hot, I would guess so we could both be served our next course at the same time. The more straightforward dishes were the best while a couple of items that seemed more oriented to foodies didn't quite make it. Overall, we had a very nice time and would consider going again."

  • "I come to your restaurant at least once a month just to have the hamburger and truffle oil fries. Oh, my! It's a wonderful treat. The other people in my group loved their salmon salads-quiche-and huge meatball. Our waiter was charming and fast to fill glasses. It was all just wonderful."

  • "Our server (Eric) was wonderful. He was informed and helpful with suggestions and special request. The meal was perfect. We had the Hayes Omelets and they were fantastic. Not at all greasy or overstuffed. Just perfect! Great coffee as well. We have had dinner there often but this was our first brunch. We will return soon."

  • "Amazing restaurant with an alpine hunting lodge decor inside a hotel. The menus are lighted similar to an iPad (not interactive). Service was pleasant and attentive. The atmosphere a little formal. Quail appetizer reportedly excellent. The elk was superb as was a filet mignon. Seafood available as well. A selection of local craft beers rounded out the experience. A nice bar for drinks and an enjoyable evening overall. "
