Diner Reviews
  • "The place does not live up to the hype. Menu selections are limited and not to everyone's taste. Some odd, rather than creative, choices. Servers were attentive but the kitchen couldn't keep up - the wait time was slow and uneven - annoying. Without Chef Samuelson's personality and media attention would this restaurant be such a big deal? Doubtful."

  • "After waiting 1/2 hr even with a Tues lunch reservation, the food was a disappointment. The salads were lacking flavor, the fish was overly curried. The mac and cheese was good but definitely needed the bacon. The staff was very nice but the overall experience lacked. Maybe it was because of restaurant week but there was nothing that would make me want to come back....or recommend the restaurant."

  • "Should be on everyone's list of unique New York restaurants. Lively, friendly and yummy."

  • "Having read Marcus Samuelsson's autobiography a year ago I vowed to myself I'd go there my next trip to NYC. Was able to make a reservation about a week ahead. Restaurant is about 60 steps from the 128th st subway station. But for me it's all about the food and this did not disappoint! My shrimp n grits were sublime. My granddaughter ordered their mac and cheese with bacon. It too had great flavor with a Southern style and sophisticated spices. Succotash side was special. We went early because we were 2 women alone. I asked a hotel concierge whether we would be safe going to Harlem. Was assured yes. Overall great experience. They had live music in the bar too."

  • "Been waiting ages to try Red Rooster & it did not disappoint. The staff was amazing. Total white table cloth service, but without the stuffiness. For 3 people we ordered 2 starters, 2 entrees, 1 dessert & a host of sangria & wine (all more than enough). For starters we had the watermelon & feta salad, chicken & waffles (first time for me) & an order of their signature corn bread. All lived up to the reviews. Dinner was shrimp & grits (needs flavor) & oxtail pappardelle (delectable!). To round it out we had their signature donuts for dessert, though would have ordered the s'mores had they not been out. This was probably the only disappointing part of the meal. Highly recommend. We will return for brunch and cocktails in the future."

  • "This is our 2nd time at Red Rooster. The 1st time was on a kind of whim and we were not very hungry. This time, we made sure we brought our appetites! We were immediately seated and at 6:30 pm, the place was packed (inside/out/bar), but not crowded. You look around and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. The attentive service throughout our meal was appreciated. The food was DEE-LISH! Our table ordered the watermelon/tomato salad, cold tomato soup, oysters/wings, deviled eggs and cornbread...for our apps. Everything was so good that we nearly licked the plates. Entrees included the shrimp and grits and the triple/double burger (2) and the corn side dish (on the cob). Kudos to everyone at Red Rooster. Great job."

  • "I dined at Red Rooster with a girlfriend & our 2 tween girls. The dinner was on the last night of our trip. RR had been recommended to my friend, who commutes to NY from Chicago for work. We had many recommendations, and ate VERY well during our stay. Although I have visited NY on many occasions, I had never ventured into Harlem. I'm glad I did on this trip! The vibe at RR was hip, warm and friendly. There was a DJ playing near the front, but we could still hear each other speak. The staff was all smiles and service was attentive even though the place was teeming with patrons. 2 highlights were the shrimp with grits, and the mac and cheese- fit for adult tastes. Cocktail flavors were expertly blended. We certainly saved the best for last!"

  • "Dined here and it wasn't as good as I was told. Our server was not very attentive and the food was not as good as advertised. The portions were small, the meatballs were dry and the service was really bad. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone...."

  • "Marcus Samuelsson does not disappoint in this magnificent Harlem gem. The food was as described - comfort food but with a delicious twist in taste. Even 13 and 11 year old boys dined and loved it all - oysters, salmon and meatballs. Will be returning for sure!"

  • "We ate here during restaurant week and the food was superb, just as described in other reviews. The grilled peach salad and meatballs were luscious. The place was really busy and the service was a bit slow. But seeing Marcus Samuelsson reduced any annoyance with service. Will go back for sure."

  • "Enjoyed my lunch, it was the perfect place to take a friend who had never dined at the Red Rooster and who has spent little time in Harlem. The food and wine were great, service was a little slow, due to the fact that lunch time was extremely busy."

  • "A good choice to try for NYC Restaurant Week. Would Probably be less noisy and crowded another time. Food good but not gtreat. Service and staff friendly and accommodating. Ambience very lively and decor fun"

  • "I'd heard about Red Rooster and had been curious for a while. So finally, I went today, alone, during Restaurant Week, and had the $25 lunch special. I had a delicious roasted peach and argula salad with a special peanut paste so good I wanted to lick it off the plate. Then came the salmon, so cripsy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. Certainly among the best I've had--and I've eaten at the best places in the New York, SF, Paris and Tokyo. The donuts, while ordinary, helped end the meal on a sweet note. But you know what was also very special? The service. Friendly, outstanding and discreet. Thanks RR! Will come again and again."

  • "Excellent food with good service. Only problem was a salad served on a warm plate. Noise level was high. Staff is pleasant and courteous."

  • "This is a place I always come to whenever I'm in NY. The athmosphere is great from the decor, to the Bar with live music and a good place to just watch people. The good is good, the service OK, the only thing is it's a little bit too noisy. I would certainly recomend it!"

  • "I took my boyfriend here for his birthday on a tuesday night and the place was PACKED. We had missed our reservations but thankfully we were seated within 20 minutes. We sat at a small table in the corner and we had a perfect view of the entire dining area, the kitchen, and the bar. We even saw Marcus Samuelsson! There was a live band that night so the noise level was pretty high but we really enjoyed the music so we didn't mind. We ordered the red rooster sangria and aged rib eye dinner for two. AMAZING. The only thing I will say is we only saw the waitress that took our order once, several other different servers gave us our food and checked in on us, so we really don't know who the tip we left went to. Overall, amazing experience!"

  • "The food was delicious and nicely presented with art and soul. The space is pleasant, modern and filled with live music. The service was friendly and accommodating. To top off the experience, Marcus Samuelsson himself came around to each table and wished us a good meal. It was a treat!"

  • "Foods always good, but I ended up sitting at the bar for happy hour this time. Cocktails were lovely, but the "happy hour" wine is the same price as it regularly is so there's no deal there. The bartenders and servers mean well, but have a ways to go in terms of providing the prompt, polished service an establishment like this should have. I've had this experience repeatedly, whether dining or just drinking. I love you, Red Rooster, but please train your FOH staff more thoroughly."

  • "Had an amazing time celebrating my BFF bday today. The staff were attentive to details and service was great. The food was very tasteful and plentiful. After dinner, went to the bar for drinks and had a great time with the bartenders especially kamal. He worked the bar very well and did great drinks. I will definitely return since the food, customer service and vibe of the restaurant was great."

  • "I ordered the spiced tomato soup and applewood smoked salmon. My dining partner had the market salad and meatballs and both were excellent. When I placed my order for the salmon the waitress asked me how I wanted it cooked and I replied "however the chef suggests." She then said, "Well then let's go with medium" but I did suggest a little more toward medium rare. The salmon arrived pink on the outside with no hint of smoke or a hot pan. Just under the pick outside it was raw. I asked for it to be redone and it came back cooked OK, but the sauce it was sitting in was too acidic and no taste of smoke. The waitress never came back to ask if it was OK. I did not eat the donuts for dessert. You can get the same think at Dunkin' Donuts."

  • "We had the corn bread, deviled eggs and oyster/chicken basket. All were great. The most surprising was having chicken skin mayonnaise with the deviled eggs which we definitely recommend. The bar was nice and open and the outdoor patio looked inviting although it was a bit hot for us so we stayed at the bar. The food and drink prices were a bit more expected, on par with downtown, but mostly worth it. The service was outstanding and everyone was very friendly. Highly recommend."

  • "First time here, after it was recommended by a friend. We loved the place, had a reservation in the back, but stayed at the bar (we normally like dinning at the bar area instead of sitting down by a table)). The bar area is great, friendly, vibrant, cool and relaxing. We loved the interior design of the bar! The bartenders, Patrick and Dion, did a fantastic job. We started with Grandpa’s Gravlax and the Chile Rubbed Lamb Tostadas…..excellent taste and portions for both….then we went for the 30oz!!!! Dry Aged Ribeye (for 2 p)……its was fantastic. We left with huge smiles and had a perfect evening! We will be back for both the bar, food and friendly bartenders "

  • "Great cocktails. Fantastic ambience. Delicious dishes. What a phenomenal dining experience we had at Red Rooster Harlem. It exceeded our already high expectations and we cannot wait to return. From the friendliness of the staff to the quality of the food, it was, hands down, one of the best dining experiences we've had in a very long time. Red Rooster Harlem provided us with a terrific and very memorable evening."

  • "My husband is from the South, so I thought this would be a fun place to celebrate his birthday. He loves comfort food and the menu looked really interesting. When we arrived on a Friday night, the scene was vibrant and patrons appeared to be having a very good time. There was a mix-up with our table, but after a short wait the hostess gave us the next available private table (request this if you don't want communal) and the restaurant brought over some complimentary appetizers. The food and cocktails were excellent. We particularly loved the ceviche and the watermelon salad. Best part was the service - our waiter, Ryan, was outstanding. He took great care of us, knew the menu well, and was passionate about his recommendations."

  • "We treated a friend visiting from Chicago (birthday weekend) and were promptly seated upon arrival (warning: parking is sparse, so arrive early). We chose to sit indoors although they have seating outside; we were seated on the main level (there is another dining area downstairs). The noise level was energetic and our booth abutted the bar area (but we were still able to hear each other). Our waiter was engaging and immediately got our drink orders. The appetizers followed--the ceviche was deliciously chunky and served with plantain chips. Entrees included rather meaty pork chops and steak. All the dishes were tasty and presented well. For all the hype surrounding this establish, you can't go wrong with a meal at Red Rooster!"

  • "This was my first visit to Red Rooster (having been a Marcus Samuelsson fan for decades). It was an incredible experience on every level. I was greeted by several people when I entered the restaurant. The host was just lovely and while I waited for my friend, the host recommended her favorites from the menu. I had the exquisite watermelon heirloom tomato salad followed by the delicious Caribbean BB Roo chicken sandwich. While I was having an already wonderful experience, Marcus came over to the table to welcome us, shake our hands and ask if we were having a nice lunch. What a thrill! It's obvious to see what a treasure Red Rooster is for its neighborhood, and I would contend it's a treasure for all of New York City. Bravo!"

  • "It was first time for all diners at our table (6), and we were all pleased. The food was delectable, the portions were worth the price, the service was on point and the staff was excited to explain the menu items. We had no complaints and talked about it for the next few days. I grew up in Harlem and have since moved away so it was a great homecoming. I had the chicken and waffles as an appetizer and it was large enough to be a meal, but I didn't stop there. I then enjoyed the Shrimp and Grits and I tell you - I have had shrimp and grits before but those tasted as if a kid made them in comparison to the Excellence of this dish. Great Restaurant, don't go to Harlem and pass it by, Stop, Eat, Live and Love."

  • "I've been to Red Rooster several times, for different occasions, with different friends, and at different times of the day. I've never been disappointed in either the food or service. Staff is gracious, friendly, but I appreciate that no one hovers over the table. I'm personally trying to work my way through the entire menu, so I have many more visits to come! This is a terrific addition to the neighborhood and to the city! Love the ambience."

  • "We had a RRH tasting menu at an event recently, and couldn't believe how fantastic the food was. We read some reviews that complained about long wait times even with reservations, so we decided to make an 8pm reservation assuming we'd get seated at 8:15 or 8:30. We arrived about 5 minutes early, and were told it would be about 20 minutes. It was a full hour before we were seated, and then the server didn't come to take our order for about 12 minutes. Even though we were starving at this point, the food was surprisingly just not that great. The courses were paced well, but at the end, we had to wait 20 more minutes to get the check. The live music was WAY too loud. We both have good hearing, but literally had to yell to hear each other."

  • "We had a great time at Red Rooster. We thought the star of the night was the Swedish Cloud dessert. I don't recall eating anything so delicious in a very long time. However, we were not exactly blown away by the main course (blackened catfish & Mrs HP's spicy chicken). We thought both dishes were on the drier end and, since we were looking for a unique dining experience, we were slightly disappointed. We loved the watermelon and oyster&wings appetizers though. The restaurant has a unique vibe and was completely full and alive. The one-hour latino music intermezzo around 9-10pm made it little difficult to talk but we had already had enough good wine not to care about that too much."
