  • "After all the hype, my wife and I expected more. It's a fun place with fun food, but the quality of the food is not great. The dishes are interesting, creative, imaginative, and so full of salt and sugar that you'll go through 3 pitchers of water. The Swedish Meatballs were tasty, but overly processed and too salty. Spicy Tomato Soup was delicious, as was the cornbread. Peaches and Cream dessert so sweet as to be inedible. We were there on a Monday, and it was crowded but not insane. That is, till about 9pm when the band started playing. After that, our conversation came to a halt because of the noise. However, once we finished dinner, we went to the bar which was a fun scene, cool crowd, and the band was terrific."

  • "My family and I are from Sweden, so I had been wanting to try Marcus Samuelsson's restaurant in Harlem for a while... When my parents came to town we headed to Red Rooster and had an amazing spread of food. Between the three of us, we split the swedish meatballs, salmon dish, lamb tostadas, chicken wings, corn bread, a side of the mexican street corn, and then the peach tart. It was all delicious, especially the corn bread! I'll be back!"

  • "The place was hopping - reservations are a must. The food was unique (chicken waffles, lamb curry tostadas, or jerk pork chop anyone?) and delicious. We were there on a Saturday, so there was live music that was outstanding. People were standing on the sidewalk just for a chance to hear the music. We were one of three tables there celebrating a birthday, so we weren't the only ones who thought it was good for a rowdy celebration. Not the place to have a quiet conversation. Someone said the portions were small; I think they were just normal!"

  • "They had a last minute reservation for Saturday night, so we sat at the Chef's table and were able to see into the kitchen. It was a really fun environment and I liked the idea of a Chef's/Community table. We ordered the cornbread and it was incredible. Served warm and with butter and tomato jam. I got some to go and ate it for breakfast the next day… that good. For entrées we split the Fried Yard Bird and the Chicken and Waffles. They Chicken and Waffles was one of the best I've ever had! I loved that they served whipped chicken liver with it as a speed. The Fried Yard Bird was also excellent. I can't wait to go back!"

  • "We had a wonderful Friday night dinner at The Red Rooster. Excellent staff, great energetic atmosphere. It was very difficult to get reservation … we are not from New York. But once we got reservations we were delighted with the experience. Chicken and waffles and hot wings appetizers were excellent. Shrimp and grits …. perfect portion and very flavorful. We will be back."

  • "Famous for fried chicken, but it is so "overfried" that the skin is like plaster. Didn't expect that. Front staff extremely cordial: Especially Nicolette at podium & floor manager Chari, probably NY's best-dressed/most stylish floor manage. Would try again, but would ask that the chicken not be fried to a "hard golden black." That said, inside was moist! I saw deviled eggs on menu and thought of the ones Mom made. These were okay, but a dash of relish would make a huge difference. I may be wrong, but I detected a dash of real bacon bits on top. Nice touch. Next time, I'll try the mac 'n lobster. My dining buddy is still raving about that. And he loved the fiery wings."

  • "Decided to try Red Rooster for Restaurant Week only to find out they only have those prices for the lunch menu. Huh? Don't understand that and they actually shot themselves in the foot because my parents and I spent much less on drinks, etc. Then we usually do when we dine out for dinner. I ordered the salmon but although very tasty I had a small piece of salmon gazpacho and about 12 black eye peas, needless to say I had to eat again a few hours later."

  • "I looked at the menu online and wasn't initially impressed. But it wasn't my choice to go here. I ordered the mac and greens with bacon, aunt had the salmon and cousin had the shrimp and grits AND chicken and waffles. I WISH I COULD GO BACK NOW! I mean RIGHT now...at 7:54 am! The food was delicious and our service was outstanding, everyone, but especially our server! Can't remember her name (blame the food) but she was great!"

  • "We were expecting some amazing food based on the buzz about Red Rooster, but were unimpressed by the food. The service was also odd: one bus person kept coming over and asking to remove plates or drinks that were clearly not empty. The server was fast to greet but then disappeared a few times. The food came fast at first and then we felt left on our own. For appetizers, we ordered the deviled eggs which had a bizarre texture (although the chicken skin mayo was good), the chicken and waffle which was very disappointing (way dry chicken, soggy waffle), and a watermelon and tomato salad which was tasty. For mains we had the pork chop which was the only stand out item and shrimp and grits which were meh. The peach pie had soggy bottom."

  • "Food was just okay..though service was great...Went there for $25 lunch...salad was wimpy and unevenly drenched in oil and salt..Mac Cheese with lobster was very good...dry wimpy side salad with a couple of raw vegetables accompanied the mac and cheese-....Dessert was biggest disappointment, 3 non-eventful small donuts sitting in a bit of sweet potato and a dollop of whipped cream....just don't understand the hype....live in the hood, and still trying to find a great restaurant..."

  • "I am lucky enough to visit NYC a couple if times a year. With so many wonderful restaurants in the city, I rarely return to the same one twice. Red Rooster is the exception. It is a long cab ride from where we stay In Chelsea, but the fun atmosphere, attentive wait staff, and incredibly creative food make it worth the trip. I am tiny and normally bring half my dinner home. The blackened catfish was so delicious that I ate every bite and would have licked my plate clean if it wasn't impolite. I enjoy looking at all of the photographs in the restrooms! My only minor complaint on this visit was that it seemed to take a long time for our check to arrive after we finished our meal. However, this will not keep me from returning!"

  • "My 13-year-old had lunch at the Red Rooster on her summer "to do" list. Even though we showed up 30 minutes ahead of our reservation, we were seated promptly and politely. Also, while the Rooster is obviously a destination for the influential, business minded and sophisticated crowd, the wait staff treated my daughter as they would any diner. Our server, Martina, engaged my daughter in conversation and made her feel welcome even though she was the youngest person in the restaurant by far. As expected, the food, ambiance and service was great. We went during Restaurant Week and was not disappointed."

  • "When we arrived we were offered seats at a common table surrounded on both sides. I demurred and after about a 10 minute wait we were given an actual table in the dining room. I had brought wine and expected to pay a corkage fee for its decanting and serving. After we ordered, we sat and waited and finally the waiter told us they were seeking a decanter. Then the salads came (he neglected to ever bring the corn bread) and I insisted he open the wine so we could drink it rather than wait for the decanter (which NEVER arrived). The salads were excellent and the main courses came without the french fries ordered. I asked for them and they were delivered undercooked, a pale white color instead of GBD. No corkage or charge for fries."

  • "All dish presentations were lovely, as was the decor. Spicy chicken was the most tender restaurant chicken I've ever had; the spiciness resided in the rest of the dish. The shrimp was also cooked to the right consistency. For a non-chocolate dessert option, try the Swedish Cloud: very complex. Table neighbors described their s'mores dessert as "awesome" and "rich." Lots of staff. Folks were packed at the bar waiting for a table to open up. When I was there on a Mon night they had live music."

  • "The service was pretty good, but not stellar. Took longer to place the food order, but then each dish (except for dessert) came in a timely manner. Waited a little long for the dessert, but it was worth the wait. Wait staff was very friendly and engaged in delightful conversation. We were seated near the kitchen and rest rooms, and often had other patrons waiting to use the rest rooms. Went during Restaurant Week and ordered meal off the RW menu, but ordered the 2nd off the regular menu. Nice to have the choice."

  • "Went here for the third time. Food was delicious as ever. Shared plates with my friend so we could both have a taste of everything. Two remarks on the evening though: 1. the live music became very loud at some point, we could not even hear each other anymore so that was a bit much for me (this was on a Sunday). Also, at the moment we finished our dinner, our check was brought without us asking for it, which gave me the feeling that we were requested to leave. Both these comments were not valid for the first two visits here though, so I will definitely return!"

  • "bar vibe is great. but two issues: 1) cannot transfer a tab from the bar. we arrived 30 minutes early to have a drink and enjoy the bar scene. took ~ 5 minutes to get a waiters attention to get a drink. then at the time of our reservation we were told we had to close with the bar, and so we waited another 5+ minutes to get someone's attention so we could close. terrible experience not befitting a fine restaurant 2) we were seated at the communal table next to the bathroom. worst seat in the house and it simply should not exist. for the duration of our meal we had people lined up within arms reach of our table waiting for the bathroom. pure stupidity. clearly they are willing to sacrifice the experience of the dinners seated there."

  • "My positive experience started with commander-in-chef sighting at the outdoor, all-umbrella'd/shaded tables, and sat at the wide-enough-to-eat-at copper-topped bar for a glass of wine. The personal decor was interesting, and the hostesses were extremely friendly and accommodating. It's got a neighborhood vibe and I ended up engaging with 3 other tables along my banquette-a family from GA, a pair of XX friends from NJ celebrating a birthday, and a Mom and daughter in from Detroit to check-in on status of their brownstone rehab. Restaurant Week menu was delish-green salad then salmon, and doughnuts as my necessary indulgence. Waiter was average."

  • "Unofrtunately, this place was a disappointment. First off, we asked if we could be seated out doors. One of the two hostesses went to check but never returned (we did see her taking time out to socialize and take photos so I guess finding us a seat wasn't a priority). We then eneded up at one of the 'communal tables'. This type of seating is not my cup of tea. Next, we dined off of the lunch/restaurant week menu which was very limited. My husband had the salmon which was very good. I had the catfish sandwich which was very bland although the tomato soup was tasty (would have been even better hot as opposed to a cold)."

  • "i've been here twice for lunch only. it's a lovely space, a visual treat, and the food is delicious and fresh. the service is relaxed, if your time is limited let them know. limited choice of excellent beers. the staff is friendly and solicitous in a good way. if you're not from the neighborhood it's easily reached by the 2, 3, 4, and 5 subway lines, many buses, and metro-north 125th street... there's a lower level space as well which i have not experienced but looks intriguing and fun."

  • "Red Rooster was quite a scene. Small menu with variations on Southern food staples....nice combinations of flavors. Shared Green Papaya Shrimp appetizer...too small to share, shy on shrimp. Pork chop a real winner. Catfish very popular..blackened, nice succotash . Great cornbread with tomato jam. Saw a monumental seafood for 2 being served as well as a fried chicken waffle appetizer and those little lamb tacos ...lots of cocktails going by, too. Skipped dessert, decent wine, good coffee...refill was cold. Very helpful and friendly waitstaff . Music at a level that still allowed conversation in the dining area. Nice experience. A refigured Southern cuisine in decorative setting. Would have to travel elsewhere for the Real McCoy."

  • "I order the $16 Shrimp with Papaya salad, which was extremely over priced for 1 shrimp, 5 3cm size papaya, 1 plum tomatoe split in half and shredded cucumber. I felt I got robbed, for $16. However, I ordered the yardbird, with a side of Mac and Greens, that's was extremely tasteful..."
