Diner Reviews
  • "We go to Red Ox from time to time and are always happy to go back. The limited menu had enough variety for us and Karen, our waiter, was very knowledgeable and willing to provide an informed opinion. We've always been happy with the food, service and ambiance."

  • "The food was not spectacular, certainly not enough if someone is hungry. We were celebrating our anniversary and we were there out of curiosity, hoping to be awed. The wine was okey. The beet salad was unique (very small portion) The soup presentation is very good. My lamb was miniscule, nothing spectacular about the taste. The dessert was very overpriced."

  • "Treat yourself to a stellar dining experience. We brought our teenage daughter, who normally is picky about food, but trust me, she gobbled up everything, and then some! (It was a fight for the outstanding lemon tart.) It was our first time, and can only say it all in 4 little words: We will be back!"

  • "It's been a while since we have dined at the Red Ox Inn. Returning to celebrate an anniversary reminded me; they really do superlative work with the food: fresh ingredients, interesting combinations of flavours, perfect preparations. The setting was simple, relaxed and intimate. We observed that there is no art on the walls; presumably to keep attention focused on the art on the plates. The restaurant was not very busy on a sunny weekday evening when we dined. The service was attentive and friendly. We enjoyed a great bottle of wine at a decent price point. Overall, another excellent meal; we will return, sooner this time."

  • "If you want excellent food book a reservation here. Just the right portions and unlike anything you could make at home."

  • "The beef tenderloin was excellent, but the bread pudding with mushrooms was extremely salty ! Spoiled my supper and actually made me feel ill, I hope you can adjust that recipe !"

  • "Red Ox Inn came highly recommended and lived up to its reputation. We had a great table, excellent service (every little need met, very knowledgeable about the menu, accommodated request for need to be out by a certain time) and excellent food."

  • "My new fiance and I celebrated our engagement here and was it ever lovely! I had mentioned in the reservation that it was to celebrate our engagement and we were greeted with champagne and a congratulations after we were seated. They have a nice little menu, but they know how to cook the most amazing meals you'll have had in your life. It is in a neighborhood and is a smaller venue but the quality is top tier. I'd love to visit again!"

  • "Every thing was a tasty as expected. I have been one time before for my fortieth birthday and was so impressed I couldn't wait to share with other folks who enjoy good and interesting done meals. My date and I shared our meals: the beef tenderloin and the chicken and couldn't decide which was better both were excellent."

  • "Another great experience. I had a "Tribute to Grace" California Grenache with a strong strawberry flavour. Along with that I had the fresh tomato soup, and Halibut with mushrooms and scallops. All were excellent. The dessert of Cheese with walnuts, grape jelly, and butter crackers was the highlight. Eating the dessert in different combinations along with the wine created distinct experiences. Of the cheese plates in Edmonton this is easily my favorite."

  • "A friend and I spent Thursday evening at the Red Ox Inn! The food was amazing and the service was excellent! The wine list was also very descent... Shawn was our server and he really made sure we were well taken care of! The restaurant is small but really great!"

  • "We had a beautiful meal at the Red Ox. Every dish was fresh and flavourful. The service was outstanding."

  • "Overall the food was just as good as ever, but my Husband "tried" to order an appetizer that had jalapeño emulsion on the base of the dish. We asked to omit the jalapeño and was told by the waitress that it was better with the emulsion, so we should order it and eat around it. No,he said, I simply don't like it. She was adamant , so we didn't order it at all. I have to say that's a first for me. Most restaurants will allow the customer to order what they like. This wasn't something that was cooked into the scallop, it was placed there before the scallop was plated."

  • "We had a great experience. Except for the fish that was a bit overcooked, all the food was amazing."

  • "Had the opportunity to try the Red Ox Inn again for the first time in about 10 years. The food was excellent and our server was wonderful and engaging. The restaurant has undergone some interior upgrades since our last visit and it is a more modern feel with the white walls and black booths. I'm not sure if the 'new' feel of the restaurant is better or not, but I would definitely go back and I'm not going to wait another 10 years!"

  • "This was my second time to Red Ox Inn for dinner; it is one of my favorite places to go in Edmonton. Our server was very knowledgeable, easily able to suggest which wines to have with our meals. She made us feel very comfortable and had a great sense of humor!"

  • "We frequented Red Ox Inn a few times a year between 2007 and 2011, at that time it was the best restaurant we'd ever eaten at. Since then, we moved to Calgary and have eaten at many of the "top" restaurants. Nothing compared to Red Ox Inn. We ate dinner at Red Ox Inn the other night for the first time and 3 years and the food and service are still as excellent as ever. Quality of food and service is excellent. Also, I generally follow a very clean diet and often find that restaurant food will upset my stomach. This has never happened for me at Red Ox Inn, which I am attributing to the quality of ingredients used in their dishes. If you try one new restaurant, make it Red Ox Inn; you won't be disappointed!"

  • "My husband and I are never disappointed when we come to Red Ox Inn. It is one of our favorite fine dining spots. As usual the food was excellent--my husband had the lamb entree and I had the pork, and we shared the chocolate dessert after. Our wine recommendation was also spot-on."

  • "Tremendous food. The tomato soup was nicely balanced with acid and tomato flavour. The tenderloin was rare just as I requested. The matching of the meat with a mushroom bread pudding, an exceptional sauce Bordelaise and a savoury custard worked well. The cheese plate was underwhelming, fine but not up to the level of the soup or the entree. We had a nice Malbec and enjoyed our meal. The service was a little over the top. When I commented that the cheese was "fine" but not as good as the rest the server replied "Excellent!". I would never have thought that they were aiming for a last course drop off. It is a little on the pricey side but my criticisms are minor. It was a good meal that we both enjoyed."

  • "A quiet hidden gem with a simple atmosphere and limited menu. Decisions made quickly. Food is tasty, well portioned, and beautifully presented. Unique combinations of protein and carb. Service was excellent. Definitely recommend the halibut and tenderloin. Whipped cheesecake for dessert was to die for."

  • "My girlfriend and I are big fans of Canteen (Owned and operated by same people who runs Red Ox Inn), so we finally decided to try this place out. The restaurant was located in a residential area, so it was a little tucked away, but by golly, am I glad that I went there. Halibut I had there was the best I have ever had and everything we ordered there were all top notch. Highly recommend this place."

  • "Beet salad is so flavourful and presented so beautifully. Tortellini was very Tasty. But more of a fall feel to the combination of Butternut squash and veggies. Halibut was the better dish, with the fish cooked perfectly on a bed of mushrooms and quinoa. Whipped cheesecake with berries was divine."

  • "I have dined at the Red Ox quite a few times. The waiter each time has always been a notch above other independent restaurants- ie well-informed- sense of humour- vigilant, but not ' in your face'. Therefore we felt well looked after. The food has always been great. In years of dining there, I have yet to experience a 'miss', so will definitely be back. Thank you for a pleasant evening!!"

  • "Had high expectations due to previous reviews but left underwhelmed. Food was, for the most part, innovative and enjoyed, especially the mains, though my beef tartare starter was probably the worst adaption I've ever had. Atmosphere was dictated by the noise which was loud enough to require our party to shout at each other on occasion. As we had the corner booth table it seemed that the corner attracted the noise from the rest of the room. Although our meal and evening was enjoyed I doubt that we will be returning customers. The price alone dictates a better quality atmosphere and a no faults menu. I know it is well supported however for those of us that had made a one and a quarter hour drive there is better available for the price. "

  • "I enjoyed my entire meal very much. I was attempting to prove to my friend that restaurants in general could do a far better job of providing more flavourful, well thought out dishes and Red Ox did not let me down. Thanks! All the courses had blissful moments for me. The staff was very attentive but one more person on the floor would have given them the two that were on a bit more time to interact and improve upon what was good service, enabling it to be great service. There was a couple times where we waited a bit longer than what we should have but it did not ruin the experience. It was just a bit too bright and I think slightly dimmer lighting would create a nicer ambiance. "

  • "Had a wonderful evening at Red Ox with our family. Five adults with appies, main dessert and drinks for $600 with tip. Every dish was wonderful (we shared tastes!!). Can't wait for next visit!"

  • "Red Sox Inn has been a staple on the Edmonton food scene for many years. I was glad to see it is I diminished in its quality. I had the pork belly, lamb, and chocolate tort for dessert. All was flavourful and none overpowering. The service was excellent and attentive without being pushy. My only complaint is that there is a very limited wine list for those who would not drink an entire bottle. But given the size of the room, I can understand their reluctance to open too many bottles. "

  • "Red ox inn is that place you want to go relax and have some spectacular food. Gull valley tomato's dressed and seasoned properly with whipped goat cheese, so good. You won't find fresher halibut in the city either. Service is perfectly paced for enjoyment and our waiter was wonderful and had some amazing wine knowledge. Price is inline with other places in the city. Can't wait to go back."

  • "THE best dinner I have ever had in my life. Superb lamb, and the ingredients make you wonder when you read them on the menu, but your palate will soon agree on your first bite. The dessert was delicious and the appetizer of mac and cheese was to die for. Who thought to put a dash of nutmeg, with apple in mac and cheese? Frickin genius! Do not put this restaurant off on your list, try it out this weekend. I promise you won't regret it. Cost $$$$ out of 5"
