Diner Reviews
  • "This is the only Mexican food I will eat so when I'm in that neighborhood, I always eat at Red O and really take advantage of the fresh, gourmet menu. Get anything with mole sauce. That's what the award-winning chef is known for. The decor inside is stunning and the service is exceptional."

  • "I love this place, the food is divine, the waiters are patient and helpful and the ambiance is soothing."

  • "Been looking for a new Mexican food place. Food is creative and not precious, tasty but not overly complicated. Portions are right-sized. I'll be back with other friends, too."

  • "The building and decor are absolutely gorgeous, which must be why they feel comfortable charging exorbitant amounts of money for Mexican food -- Mexican food, I might add, that is really not spectacular. If I walk into a beautiful restaurant and spend $75 a person (again, for Mexican food!), then I think the food should live up to the hype. I would like to be blown away. The $10 guacamole was more gimmick than panache, the shrimp and lobster enchiladas ($22) were dry and bland. The tortillas were great, salsa was fine (but not better than most), and the margaritas were fantastic (the organic, with fresh lime juice and agave was sublime, which is why I didn't mind spending $16 for one. The service was amazing. I wish the food had been."

  • "The Market Margarita is not on the menu - but it is delicious! The food, service and ambiance was wonderful! We will definitely be back!"

  • "The service was great. It was a group of 6 and we're seated right away, albeit I had a reservation but nonetheless there was no waiting. The service was great. The servers were passing and filling cups with water or soda and never let the cup get half empty. Our waitress took the time to answer all the questions and had a great attitude. And the food, that is a Mexican food experience like none other. The pork belly sopes are a must for everyone"

  • "I arrived on time for 7:30 reservation but had to wait to be seated till 8:20. Food was OK nothing to rave about but in my opinion very expensive for the quality of food. I could have gone to a much finer restaurant for the same price $250 for 3 people."

  • "The cocktail menu looked fabulous and their specialty margarita, Topolo, was outstanding. My husband and I shared acorn and goat cheese tamale appetizer; it was very flavorful and not heavy on masa. My scallops were beautifully plated, cooked perfectly and had a lovely sauce. I loved the little starter dish of guacamole with bacon. We talked about moving to the neighborhood so we could stop in for one of their margaritas every night."

  • "Beautiful hand-blown glass chandeliers, outdoor seating available, wonderfully warm ambience for upscale Mexican cuisine including Branzino a la Veracruzana, Carne Asada from prime angus NY strip, and Lamb in Mole Negra, in addition to ceviche, enchiladas and tacos al carbon prepared in haute style. Terrific place for a special night."

  • "Our entire experience was great until the valet guy gave me the keys and said my car was down the street at one of the meters (about half a block down). He didn't even walk us there to open the doors. He sure took the $10 I handed him prior! I was trying to brush it off and not make a scene so as to not ruin our great didning experience but my wife and friends ended up so upset on the way home it ruined the night."

  • "The restaurant is beautiful, food fantastic and outstanding service. It is a very noisy space but, surprisingly, our table was off to the side and the volume was at a tolerable level. We were not screaming but talking at a normal level. It was a wonderful experience and we will definitely return."

  • "I'm a huge fan of Rick Bayless -- and have been to all of his Chicago restaurants -- but was not blown away by Red O. I loved the decor and the menu but found most items "Good" but not "Great." Perhaps it was a bad night but the fish items, in particular, seemed more "fishy" than I would expect them to be and not well trimmed of connective tissue, the service also lacked the attention to detail that I expected. I would go back to this restaurant but it did not make my must-try list."

  • "This place is a very trendy! The host took us through the entire restaurant including the tunnel of tequila which was a fun thing to see. The food was pretty good..Except I would NOT recommend the Mole Enchiladas...Our server recommended those--they tasted like chocolate!!! Gross! I mean, I LOVE chocolate, but not on my fricken enchilada! Everything else was delicious. If you are looking for a fun place to take out of towners, this place is perfect. I took my dad here and he asked for a "trendy Hollywood place" so I took him here. It was perfect!"

  • "I've been here twice now for birthday party dinners (groups of six each time). Most recently we sat on the patio, which has a more casual feel than the interior space. The atmosphere is lively--lots of energy on a Friday night. I really enjoy the food here, especially the ceviche. The service is attentive and friendly."

  • "I felt the tuna ceviche and pulled pork enchiladas we ordered were excellent. Bouchon definitely has oysters that are more fresh. The churros aren't very good. But besides the dessert being not very tasty, I would definitely go back for the food."

  • "A friend highly recommended this restaurant for the food and live music. The Fanny bay oysters were amazing. The Market Margarita was refreshing and delicious. Highly recommend the Pollo en Mole Poblano."

  • "The service is just great. The bottomless brunch drinks were fantastic. This will definitely be one of my go-to brunch restaurant. It's decor is inviting and makes you feel as though you're sitting in a top restaurant in Mexico. Will be back soon."

  • "The Melrose St. shopping vibe totally changes once you walk into the lovely Red 'O patio. It is a pleasant, comfortable atmosphere. The staff is friendly. The special champagne margarita is just "ok", opt for the regular margarita or the caipirinha. Guacamole is enough for two. The duck appetizer is also good and enough for only two. The skirt steak tacos were excellent, served rare and the perfect portion for one. We finished with the soft serve ice cream and amazing cajeta sauce - OMG, sooooo good. Restaurant is a fun spot at Sunday Brunch. Still haven't gotten here for dinner, but our brunch experiences have all been so delightful that we always say we should. For us, though, it is a long drive in traffic so evenings are a hike."

  • "We love Red O and pop in to get their spicy Margarita - the best in town. We brought foodie friends in from NY and they absolutely loved the restaurant. The decor is modern with a touch of Mexico. The food sublime. The succulent pork dish stole the night. The brazino was also tasty. They have something for everyone. Healthy and upscale - calling it mexican would be an injustice - cause there's not a burrito on the menu. Also the cerviche trio is amazing!"

  • "I came to Red O many years ago and it definitely had a face lift. It was great before but I see they made it even better. Food and service was great. I felt like a celeb. I will definitely go back!"

  • "Wonderful place to dine; Great atmosphere, relaxed and full of energy at the same time. Loved the piano bar, music was great from old classics to contemporary in Spanish and English! The staff were accommodating without breathing down your neck. They sat us down right away -- no wait whatsoever. The food was delish -- The ceviche appetizer is a must! Although it's called Trio of Ceviche, it had 4 types (I'm not complaining - soooo good). We all loved our entrees. Not your typical Mexican restaurant. We've been wanting to go there for 3 years, and it did not disappoint. Can't wait to go back and try another dish!"

  • "I've eaten there before and the food remains quite inventive, the ambience superb. I utilized a voucher from living social, 2 cocktails and 3 appetizers for $39 and was charged 30% tip, the tip was on the tax as well so $39 became $62. The voucher asked us to kindly tip on the full value but nowhere was there mention of such a forced atrocious amount."

  • "First time dining at Red O and we enjoyed the experience in it's entirety! The ambience was great; the piano bar was fun, the food was good and the server was attentive and personable. We overheard their brunch offerings on the weekends and we plan to return!"

  • "We were seated promptly at our reservation time. Restaurant was beautifully decorated. Our waiter was very knowledgable about drinks and menu and made recommendations which we loved. The spicy margarita was amazing. Everyone enjoyed their food and would defiantly recommend this restaurant!!!"

  • "Love the ceviche sampler! And fabulous guacamole! We enjoyed everything we ate and I had the best cocktail ever - La Paloma! omg - they should offer them by the pitcher! LOL - It's a beautiful restaurant, with great staff, live music and delicious food!"

  • "I love dining at RED-O! First of all it's a beautiful restaurant and the food and service is fabulous! The food is a delectable experience and the staff has always been friendly and so available. There's a certain romantic, relaxed and unique ambience that makes me feel like I've traveled out of LA!!"

  • "Dined here many months ago and remember it being outstanding. So, with a friend from Denver, dined here the other night. Big disappointment. Very slow service. I had a 7:30 PM reservation and even though we were seated promptly, didn't get our check until 10:40. Don't know why it took so long. We waited and waited for our food. The restaurant was only about 25% filled as it was a Monday night. It was a mediocre night all around. Will not return or recommend."

  • "Wonderful, flavor food with a wife variety of menu options. Service was attentive and helpful. Not a place for a leisurely sinner or an intimate conversation. Felt like an oasis in Beverly Hills which is great for a night out with inventive cocktails."

  • "I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant and our dining experience! We had a fantastic server, Chesiree, that made our experience all the more enjoyable! The food is amazing and the Mole' is TO DIE FOR!!! The Topolo Margarita should not be missed either!! There were five of us dining and every meal was spot on! The service was over the top good and we will definitely will go back over and over again!!!"

  • "Good drinks, bland food.. (at least the lobster tacos and the ceviche trio). This is supposed to be a GREAT Mexican food place, it's not. Very disappointing, since Rick is one of my favorite chefs! Very expensive after all. Save your money and your time, because they are a lot of Mexican places with great food."

  • "Everything was delicious! They offer a skinny margarita. Everyone agrees that the short rib enchiladas were amazing."
    Dined on 3/6/2014
  • "Incredible food. A margarita is just a margarita? Not here - it's the best. Guacamole fresh. But the distinction with Red O - Mexican dishes done differently and menu selections not found most places. Beautiful decor, good service, and great food."

  • "Food was tasty but the service was terrible. We waited 20 minutes just to get silverware. We were there in a Living Social deal. If we had been paying full price, we would have walked out."

  • "The placed was incredibly loud from the bar to the more secluded dining rooms, each table having to yell louder and louder to hear each other. it is not the spot for a romantic evening out. Food and service were good but not outstanding. I expected more from a place that is owned by Rick B. Some of my food was overdone (shrimp) and overall was just good not great. By no means inedible but on par with food from upper end chains. Appetizers were wonderful and I would return again to order just apps and drinks but I don't know that I would come back for a meal here."

  • "Red O is best with groups, so diners can order lots of appetizers. Everything was great, but the tables were a little too close....which made for a tight squeeze."
