A word from Red Newt Bistro - NY
Red Newt Cellars Winery & Bistro is located just outside the bucolic hamlet of Hector in Finger Lakes wine region of NY. With a focus on Finger Lakes regional cuisine, chef Brud Holland crafts regionally expressive menus with ingredients sourced directly from local farmers. The Bistro boasts an all Finger Lakes wine list that offers well over 200 selections from top producers in the region, and has been awarded the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. In regions where the culture of wine and food spans centuries, the interplay of wine and food forms a complex and elegant dance. In the Finger Lakes, this interplay of wine and food is just now emerging. The most exciting element of what we can hope achieve in this evolution is to express and influence the development of wines and of cuisine—together. Red Newt Bistro cuisine delivers the excitement not with complex, intricate recipes, but rather through straightforward, sincere preparations that focus on fresh and local inspiration.

Red Newt is a winery Bistro in the New york State Finger Lakes Region. It is a little isolated from most things but good as a drop in point if you are on a wine tour. Service was good but more family restaurant oriented than bistro or upscale restaurant. Had some initial seating issues- first beside a serving station then in the middle of a line of 3 tables with diners on either side but when we requested a quieter area to one side there were no issues seating us there. Unfortunately there was a draft every time door in adjoining winery was opened. Food was tasty with soup and salad for both of us.

Food was good, but not great. We dined at better places in the Finger Lakes and even in Trumansburg. The restaurant boasts that it uses local food, but served this plain, cold white bread. Most of the other restaurants had homemade bread that was delicious from "Wide Awake Bakery". Nice place to eat, but better finds in the area.

Very nice dinner at the Newt! Tried the Gewurztraminer Flight with my fruited Duck breast and Duck sausage combination. The Gewurz was nice and spicy and drier than I expected.. very nice pairing.. Menu has been updated. My husband enjoyed his meal as well. Beautiful view of the lake and foliage!

It should be noted that the regular chef was not on duty that night. It was southern night special, with limited southern menu. The food was good, but not up to par when I ate there last year with the regular chef preparing the meals. Service was good. Prices were in line with the area. Have a very good local wine selection.

Service was excellent - the wine (at 1/2 price per bottle on Thursday nights) could not have been better. Red Newt has an extensive quality Finger Lakes wine list that cannot be believed. Been to the Red Newt for dinner twice and it is such an experience. The food is fresh and perfectly portioned. You can get a small flight of wine that compliments your meal. They offer a pre fixe menu with wine pairings as well. I ordered the Chevre Gnocci with pesto bleu cheese sauce and a flight of Lemberger wines, the pairing was a match made in heaven! Highly recommend!!

We went for Labor Day lunch and enjoyed it very much. We were quite grateful for the kid-friendly menu options (both of our kids had the pizza and loved it) as well as the elegant "grown-up" options, and, of course, the wine flights with the generous pours! The view is wonderful and the ambiance lovely. We sampled some wines in the tasting room, had a great lunch, and bought some bottles to enjoy later. We plan to return for dinner on one of the live music nights.

The food was great and the emphasis on locally grown is a big plus for us. We enjoyed the presentation too, but were too enticed to eat it that we forgot to take a picture until it was too late. And we enjoyed the personal interaction with the waiter. When we noted that we live locally, he related his local heritage which added to the local experience, which we value.

Honestly, we are BIG Red Newt fans. But Friday night was not a good experience for us. We felt they pushed an autumn menu way too early. It was a very warm, sticky evening and it was difficult to find a lighter entree or even appetizer for it still being August. We were also seated in the corner window of the restaurant right next to the door leading outside to the patio which became full during our meal. This meant all servers, bussers, etc. had to squeeze by us and open the door allowing the hot air, bugs, etc. right into our table space.

Interesting menu and most of the meal was excellent. Meat a bit overcooked but still tasty - sides were perfect and well thought out. Had the Red Newt Riesling and price was same as in local liquor store (a very good deal) - they also offered an extensive Finger Lakes wine list. Music was a bit loud but adjusted after someone requested they turn it down a bit - very good local Bluegrass band (Rebecca Colleen ??) made for an unexpected nice touch as did a beautiful sunset over Seneca Lake.

I would recommend Red Newt Bistro. The service was excellent and they have a great wine list--not only their own but other Finger Lakes wines as well. It was my partner's birthday and they were right on top of it and we got a free desert. I was not happy with the vegetarian entree which was vegetable manicotti; the eggplant was tough--perhaps undercooked? It was very tasty but the eggplant made it not very enjoyable. Prices are very reasonable; limited menu.
