Diner Reviews
  • "Brought my friend from out of town on a return trip as we couldn't wipe the memory of the magnificent dessert of our first visit from our mind. I only am slightly saddened that the Heirloom Rice Porridge was no longer (maybe seasonally) on the menu, as I often dream of inhaling that dish as well. We opted for the Tasting Menu this visit, as it encompassed the most mouth-watering pieces from the regular menu, and it didn't disappoint. Dish after dish was a delicious and whimsical vision, completed with the much photo-lauded SHAVED ICE OF REDWOOD STEMS dessert. It's a perfectly curated culinary journey of complex and perfectly proportioned flavors. The most beautifully unique dining experience in LA."

  • "We had the tasting menu, very unique flavors profiles and presentation. We like the trout roe but thought the ice shell should be a bit thinner, 2nd course was delicious, loved the walnut marzipan. Crab was good with the greens but a bit too salty for me, lamb is never my favorite but my husband likes it so we tried it, it was nice, just not our favorite (was not gamey at all which was a plus) My favorite was the dessert, really different textures, flavors. Something you can't duplicate at home and that is why we go out to these kind of restaurants! We ate most of it even though we were full. It was overall delicious and we would go back to try other items on the menu."

  • "So I'm new to Cali, and wanted to have a different type of dining experience out of the norm. Little did I know this was going to be it then some!! Great creative food & drinks. It's a must see."

  • "The visual challenges one sense, while the taste experience rewards you with unbelievably "bold" yet "delicate" flavors. Abstract art, that we totally "got" !"

  • "Dishes were served at intervals - we'd finish one, & the next would arrive - each one a complex, interesting blend of textures and flavors. Just a lot of fun, enjoying every morsel"

  • "I've been trying to get into Red Medicine and never made it until last night. The place had so many restrictions when it first opened that I was turned off. A few years running and competition softened their managers, I guess. Anyway, I had the scallops, sweet potatoes, and green blueberry dessert. The portions were very generous and the flavors was uniquely appetizing. The service was also very good. I could see that the rest of the diners were enjoying themselves as much as I was."

  • "The menu was too strange. We got up and left. Every dish was a very strange combination."

  • "The cuisine in this restaurant is eclectic and very unique. Very much on the healthy side. If you are looking for a different dining experience drawn from various sources, this is the spot to visit.Your palette wont be disappointed."

  • "The food is always great and the menu changes regularly which is nice. Not your everyday food. Chef combines really interesting flavors to make solid tasting dishes."

  • "Food was great, was looking forward to eating here for a while. Worth the trip from NJ."

  • "The tasting menu was horrendous. Having eaten at the finest molecular gastronomy restaurant in Spain, I would hate for any diner to think he had sampled this style of cooking at Red Medicine. The idea is to savor and marvel over each flavor the chef has created. But cramming about 8 different flavors or foods into a fishbowl and covering them with a tart foam or powder is not pleasing to the palate. I am disappointed by the LA food critic who steered me here on this visit. One high note: the lamb shoulder was the most tender I have ever eaten."

  • "Food surpasses Ink with far less drama. Dumplings, beef, wagyu brisket and sweet potatoes are all must haves"

  • "Be ready to see food in a new light. Chef Kahn pushes the boundaries of technique, presentation, and flavor with components such as buttermilk ash oil, freeze dried soy salt, and pistachio marzipan puree. The cocktails are fun and mixed expertly. Red Medicine is a definite must try if you're in the Hollywood area."

  • "We came in for the tasting menu and it was superb and intriguing. The array of flavors and textures in each dish were both surprising & delightful. The presentations were a joy to behold and piqued the curiosity. I enjoy cooking, so when I go out I am looking for something I don't prepare at home. The standouts, in our opinion, were the Dungeness crab concoction and the dessert based on redwood granita. As a kid in the 70s I used to read Euell Gibbons books and forage for miner's lettuce back home. I truly enjoyed being exposed to new flavors. The painting on the wall by the bar seemed to be an apt illustration of the pleasing contrasts and combinations of the tastes & textures of the dishes. Recommended for the adventurous and open diner."

  • "What we have here is an experience. I would compare it to an opera or great play. A spectacle to be enjoyed once a year at most but a spectacle that is non the less amazing. I had a hard time determining what was being done on purpose at this restaurant or were actual flaws but I will say service was robotic and soulless. There was a great lack of lighting, and a everyone seemed to talk as loud as they could. But what really shines is the food: artistic, transporting, adventurous and unique. Like any good piece of art, you undergo a roller coaster of emotions, cognitive intrigue and experience which will leave you thinking. And for this I return to my original statement, a spectacle or play to be happily enjoyed once a year."

  • "This has got to be on of the top restaurants in LA for those looking for really creative food and drink. Go with friends because you'll want to share many of the small format dishes along with at least one of the large format dishes. This is a restaurant that really has its act together."

  • "everytime we try impressing a friend we bring them here. We tell the the story of how on a trip last year to Philly, we met young chef training under Georges Perrier at Le Bec Fin chef who asked us if we had been to Red Medicine when hearing we were from LA. On another trip to Chicago, chef at Alinea asked us if we had been to Red Medicine in LA. When we said no to both, we thought to ourselves, how the hell did two chefs from two highly ranked restaurants know about this place when we did not. Since then we come every couple of months with out of town friends."

  • "Some dishes were so amazing, out of this world that you couldn't get enough (Crab, Green Strawberry, Chocolate Ganache), others were interesting and complex, but were one step below (Pheasant, Scallops - who wants to put perfectly cooked scallops in lettuce wraps?). The server was pushing the sweet potatoes on us. This was my least favorite dish. Sweet potatoes sitting in a pile of frozen coconut. No seasoning. Very unappealing. The cocktails, as usual, were amazing. I think this would be the perfect place to go for drinks/appetizers. Skip the full meal. (I do hear the pork belly is one of their best dishes, unfortunately we didn't order it and should have). Regardless, an interesting meal and worth going at least once."

  • "My husband and I love the creativity of the food. The food however is not presented at its best; simple white plates rather than the fish bowls and deep bowls would make it look so much better. The service is at a bare minimum; the waiters were cold; nobody bothered to ask us how the food was! The setting also at a bare minimum."
    Dined on 6/7/2014
  • "Every dish had waaay too many components/ingredients. Too complex to really get a handle on the main ingredient. Creative? I guess so but only for foodies think that is fun."

  • "The two of us had the chefs tasting menu and I appreciate that this chef likes to take risks, but the food must be good. The worst course was the dungeness crab which was over salted to the point of being inedible. The lamb course tasted like pastrami. This place is trying too hard to be unusual and not measuring up. Our server was the worst I've had in years. Two person table, offered a drink to my guest and did not ask me if I'd like one. Ten minutes later when I told her I'd like a drink, she forgot what I ordered in the 15 second trip the bar. She was miserable all around and we wont be returning."

  • "This has been our daughters favorite restaurant, we have been going there since the week it opened. We took a group there Monday night for her birthday. It was totally empty except for one other table. My husband asked for some bread and butter which they reluctantly brought. They charged us $12.00 for it!. I don't mind paying high prices for quality food but $12.00 for a few pieces of bread is just wrong. We won't be hurrying back."

  • "The food here was really inventive and interesting...almost every dish was unlike anything I'd had before. We chose to do the tasting menu with the beverage pairings, which made for a great, easy experience. We loved that the "pairings" were not all wine. Our server was great about asking about any dietary restrictions and making sure they were accommodated via the dishes we ordered, etc., and the one substitute dish we got (halibut vs. the crab) was our very favorite. The only odd thing was that the server said nothing when she brought the check nor when she picked it up. Only one of the four of us had put in a card and without asking, she charged him for everyone's meal! "

  • "Pros: I'm so amazed at how incredible the food is at Red Medicine. Chef Jordan Kahn definitely knows what he's doing. I've tried almost everything on the Menu and Every dish was mind blowing. From the presentation, to the flavors, down the very last bite, simply phenomenal. I recommend this place to all my foodie friends BUT I warn them, the service is wretched. Cons: The entire waitstaff is cold, never smiles, and acts like they don't want to be there. I seriously felt like a burden the few times I've been there. Every time I asked for a suggestion, I was given attitude and It sounded like it was a burden to ask. It is such a shame that such a talented chef has such a horrendous waitstaff serving his food. "

  • "The food at Red Medicine could be likened to your tongue throwing a party for your senses, mind and spirit. With each mouthful of each dish of the amazing 6-course tasting menu, so many delightful flavors and textures alternate, combine and vie for attention! It is a breathtaking experience of a meal...one that every food-lover should experience at least once!"

  • "Favorite place to bring friends and colleagues to from overseas and anyone who hasn't been there yet. No matter how I describe it or what they think, it's always a wonderful surprise. Everyone has loved it. The combinations of items is imaginative but not pretensions. The levels of flavor is not to be beat. Even the drink. Strawberry dessert.....I'm craving it now. "

  • "My partner and I met up with two friends for a catch up. The food was excellent. Our unanimous favorite was the wild yellowfin tuna. The beef brisket was delicious like meat candy and was a very large portion. We even had to take some home. Chicken dumplings were great, too. The one dish that didn't impress us was the foraged mushrooms. That dish didn't have as much flavor as the rest."

  • "Went there for my birthday, which I put in the request box of my reservation. Everyone at the restaurant was so nice and they had a great booth upfront reserved for us! We had the tasting menu which was amazing. The trout roe dish was like a terrarium of yumminess!!! OMG...everything was beautiful and tasty. #88 drink was fantastic, not too sweet and spicy! Love this place. The service was excellent...they really made my birthday special! Thanks!"

  • "Creative, but the flavors did not meld, nor did they enhance each other with their differences. Too much reliance on creme fraiche and other bold strokes that detracted from the rest of the dish. Everything was in a bowl, and by having to dig it out you could not enjoy the artistry or keep the flavors you wanted together. The menu was poorly written and did not describe the dishes. For example, no prices or explanation of the "Large Plates." The drink list was limited and confusing, as was the wine list. Too pricey for the rummage sale flatware. And the staff acted like their mothers told them they had to go to work that day. "

  • "I love this place. It's always a real treat to come here. The food is adventurous and unique. The chicken dumplings and crab are one of a kind. It's a special place with a chef who is a real artist. "

  • "This restaurant was recommended by Chef David Hawksworth in his Little Black Book. We thoroughly enjoyed the complex flavors and molecular gastronomy. Had the tasting menu for 2, six courses with beverage pairing, but did not walk away feeling over full, just pleasantly satisfied. Really enjoyed the trout roe course, they were out of dungeness crab but grouper substitution wrapped in spinack with a multi-layered cream sauce was divine. The potatoes with rice dumplings and wheatgrass and chive sauce was suprisingly good considering I never ever eat potatoes. Also, we could have eaten at least one more goldfish bowl of desert, it was delectable. Would definitely go again, if just to have another cocktail # 90."
