We had an awesome evening at Red Light. The food was amazing and the service was great. The music is more clubby, so not great if you are looking for quiet, romantic, initimate dinner.

We came because of the TravelZoo deal which was an excellent choice. We ordered everything that was offered to share. Favorites: Short Rib & Mac n Cheese and Sweet Corn soup and the Jalapeno bread with the honey butter. I love the intimate seating areas and the bar looks quite inviting for Happy Hour time. I will definately be back to try their other dishes.

With a menu that changes monthly, the chef at RLD shows off his expert composition of dishes with wonderful balance and excellent execution. Every ingredient on every plate is masterfully executed to bring a beautiful balance to each dish and complement the flavors of every other component of the dish. I've never had a bad dish there, and this has become my favorite restaurant in San Diego. For a real adventure, ask for a tasting from the chef; with a few guidelines (price, likes/dislikes) the chef will pull together a one-of-a-kind meal for you.

Thoroughly enjoyed the 4 course meal- found The Red Light District using a Travelzoo deal voucher. The food, the ambiance, and the staff made for a great evening. I would absolutely go back time and time again, and will be sure to do so next time I'm in San Diego!

My husband celebrated our 25th anniversary at Red Light District. Our server, Josie, was very helpful and attentive. She offered great suggestions and knew the menu very well. We tried the Calamari Steak and Pork Belly appetizers. Both were incredible, the calamari was not breaded which was a pleasant surprise. The pork belly is served with prawn meatballs in a kimchi broth which is devine. Dinner was the Seared Duck and the Duo of Prime Meats. Both were cooked perfectly with an incredible medley of baby vegetables! Finally, the chef sent out a beautiful trio of desserts that ended the meal perfectly. This was such a great experience for us. It was our first time here, but certainly won't be our last!

We were not happy with our experience at all. Our server never came to our table to check on us and the food was WAY over-priced for the quality. Upon ordering a $12 glass of wine she came to the table with the bottle to fill my glass and there was only a half pour left in the bottle so she said she would open a new bottle and top it off. She never did. She was never in sight when we needed her and the table next to us came and left before we had our entrees (they had the same server). The macaroni and cheese appetizer was AMAZING... I would go back for that if I didn't have such a bad experience the last time. The entrees were cold when they came out and the food was just ok. I will make sure all my friends know not to try this place.

I love everything about this place! This was my third visit and I can't wait to return. The food is delectable; fabulous flavors, creative presentation, and portions are perfect. The interior design is beautiful and classic. You could dine here for any occasion; a date, birthday, anniversary, or just because. The vibe is upbeat and there's people watching from almost every seat in the house. The handcrafted cocktails are always superb and reasonably priced. The Chef is extremely talented and very down to earth. Everyone should check this place out!

The pork belly small plate and the duck fat fries are quite tasty. Other than that, everything was pretty mediocre. Service was spotty. Also, we were sat right in front of the kitchen, which in other restaurants can be fun and different. This was just noisy and ugly and annoying. All in all, not the greatest meal for my buddy's 40th.

Really liked the overall experience. The food was good, but a couple of things kept it from being great - the lobster was bland and mushy, but the scallops were very good. The Ribeye was a bit gamey for my taste, but my friend loved it. I adored the amuse bouche, which was a tuna, sesame oil concoction - Yummy! Didn't have room for dessert, even though it was my birthday. The waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable, but maybe should have been a little more forthcoming about the lobster, when we were ordering. The chicken livers were a wonderful start....

The BEST dinner we had all week in San Diego was at the Red Light District. ALL parts of our meal were well prepared and tasty. Service was attentive and polite. Atmosphere was pleasant, including the 70's/80's music that was playing the night we were there.

I love this place. It has a unique sort of upscale feel. The decor is interesting and unique. The main dining area is open, however for a more romantic feel there are cozy booths on the far side of the bar. Pricing is just what you would expect for great food. I have tried the rabbit, 48day aged steak and their special foie gras menu (no longer available). The rabbit was delicious. It came prepared six (If I recall correctly) different ways. The steak was definitely in the top five best steaks I have had. The flavor was incredible and it had an almost melt-in-your-mouth texture. The staff and chefs are all super friendly and helpful. Overall, a perfect place for a special date or even a few delicious cocktails.

The food here, as always, is excellent. Execution in the kitchen is spot-on every time. The combinations of flavors are unique but well balanced and innovative, tho the menu may not be as accessible to those not as familiar with terms like "sous vide". Regardless of the language used on the menu, the dishes are innovative (if a bit on the rich side). For example, right now they have a seasonal asparagus and onion soup; it is wonderful to see a chef realize that, just because it's a soup, it doesn't have to be blended into a totally uniform mix. I love being able to get a little more asparagus, or a little more creme fraiche, in each bite.

A new restaurant with a small but unique menu whose excellent items are very creative and avant garde without quite crossing the line into "pretentious." Ambiance is very nice; an homage to the neighborhood's checkered past. Service, unfortunately, was poor (on a not terribly busy Saturday night!). Our waitress tended to disappear for 15 - 20 minutes at a time. Fortunately, the bar was nearby and the bartenders kept the drinks coming to our table. Portion size is on the small side of small. Normally my complaint about portion size is in the other direction - way too much, however, I ate four dishes ("conversation starter" + unshared appetizer + entrée + dessert) here and left hungry. I was pretty hungry, but I'm not a huge guy or anything.

Every dish I have tried here is truly spectacular. That said, don't come if you're on a diet; duck-fat potatoes/fries feature on a couple of dishes, as do well-marbled cuts of meat. The squash soup is to die for. The chef shows a remarkable ability to create balance in his dishes and showcase truly unctuous flavors. One downside: I've never managed to save room for dessert.

    OpenTable Diner Since 2008

We were disappointed with RLD. Entrees featured a peculiar combination of favors, were poorly executed, it was freezing inside the restaurant despite requests to close the door (50 degrees outside at the time), and service, while attentive, was riddled with mistakes. I wouldn't recommend this place for anything other than a quick bite & a drink at the bar. Better off with more traditional choices if you're looking for fine dining and you're about to spend $150+ on dinner for 2. The restaurant simply has no identity. It's a second tier establishment trying to pass itself off as a fine dining restaurant, while also attempting to cater to the riff-raff walk-in crowds from the gaslamp looking for a place to grab a drink.

Main things that could use some help: bring in more people for a better vibe midweek dining times, prices on entrees/drinks are pushing it, and need to partner with Mogl! We wanted to try a new restaurant in the Gaslamp so I went to Open Table to read reviews. I thought the reviews for Red Light District were good and the menu looked good. We weren't disappointed! We started with the special foie gras appetizer that was very good, combining dark chocolate and foie - very nice. The mushroom, brussel sprout hash was well done and butternut squash soup amazing! We split an entree, the prime meats. We could cut the steak and short ribs with a fork, they were so tender. We enjoyed this meal more than any of other new restaurants we have visited - and we paid less! We will be back!
