A word from Red Hat on the River
As MH Reed observed in the New York Times in February 2008, “Red Hat is so close to the river in Irvington that when the wind is up and the waves slap the shore, their icy spray covers the riverside path to the restaurant.” The two level, French bistro-inspired eatery is housed in a hundred -year -old factory building that has been transformed to feature an uninterrupted, 180 degree view of the river from the main and loft dining levels. Guests will enjoy the seasonal, Hudson Valley ingredients, as well as French bistro classics. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "I really liked the decor of this place and every table has a wonderful view of the Hudson River. There is also great outdoor seating. It is a little bit more of a wait so if you asked to be seated outside when you make your reservation if you want to sit outside. The service was great. The food is very good especially the salads."

  • "Had a great time. Food was very good. Try the Steak Frites."

  • "We went for the view and the relaxed outdoor atmosphere. But on that night, the skies opened up and the down-pour came. We experienced a typical, almost tropical, torrential rain with high winds and 50 degree temps. So, we spent our time inside and still had a nice time. We sat down stairs, facing the Hudson. Food was good, service was efficient, and the crowd was business smart. We will go back again and try to enjoy the whole experience, with better weather, outdoor dining, and drinks on the roof. I can see why this is a hot spot and reservations are hard to get."

  • "The food was really great. Requested outdoor seating. Was told reservation was only for inside. Outside seating had a 1 1/2 hour wait. The table they gave us was no where near the windows to see the view & it was VERY loud."

  • "Enjoyed a delicious dinner inside, followed by relaxing outdoors and watching the sun set. Very pleasant evening."

  • "If cocktails and a view are most important to you, then come to Red Hat, if food and noise level are most important, then I would suggest you find a different restaurant. The sword fish tacos (4 bite size tacos for $16) was a joke and the hanger steak could not be chewed. The scallops and salmon burger had more salt than fish. The service was great and they tried, but they could only do so much. A special occasion not well spent."

  • " Had a lovely lunch overlooking the Hudson River. Been here for evening dining as well. Service, food, and general atmosphere--very special."

  • "Wanted a place to bring my parents and my kids for a casual yet sophisticated lunch during the summer and this was perfect. The view kept my kids attention and impressed my parents. We all found the food to be wonderful and original. And go for an order of French Fries for the table. They're delicious!"

  • "My husband and I returned here after having had a lovely meal exactly one year ago on Fourth of July weekend. Exactly one year later, it was an entirely different experience - terrible food, mediocre service - disappointing in every way! We started with a soggy microwaved crab cake and asparagus appetizer - both bland and insipid. The swordfish on our entrees was clearly not fresh - displeasing to the palate. Desserts were acceptable but not outstanding. Except for the rooftop cocktails that we had before dinner (that helped numb the pain of the meal), there was little redeeming about the Red Hat. Stroll along the river, wear a red hat, but eat somewhere else!"

  • "Great service. Food was excellent with generous portions. Open airy feeling with views of the Hudson from every table. Can't wait to go back."

  • "We really enjoyed it - even though it was in the middle of a severe T-storm. Which means next time when the weather is good, we will enjoy it even more - can't wait to sit on the roof top bar before dinner to have a drink and look at the river. Nice crowd - jazz music during dinner too - overall pleasant experience."

  • "Thank you for making my birthday a special occasion!! You are the mid-way meeting spot for our daughter and our grandchildren. Extremely kid friendly."

  • "Service slow and had to ask for things (Bread, etc.) Tree different salads all delicious. Although the steak salad had too much dressing. But such a pleasant atmosphere. Always fun. Will return."

  • "First time at Red Hat on the River. I took my girlfriend there for her birthday. We had a great time. The food was excellent. The service was great. Our waitress Stephie was outstanding. We loved the fact that you can dine downstairs, upstairs or outside on the patio. The rooftop for drinks is nice. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. We will definitely be going back soon."

  • "My husband and I had the pleasure of visiting Red Hat since we were in the area and had read the reviews here on Open Table. The experience more than met our expectations. The location and it's stunning views of the Hudson on a warm and sunny summer day set the atmosphere for what was a lovely evening. Arriving a bit early for our reservation allowed us to enjoy the roof top bar view and vibe. We were seated outside as requested for dinner and were impressed with the menu selections, food and service. As the sun set and the temperature dropped it was lovely that the hostess came to the table to offer me a pashmina, red of course, which allowed me the extra bit of comfort as I finished dining."

  • "Tasty fare and a beauriful river view. The Red Hat is a neighborhood gem located on the Husdon River. However, if you don't live in Irvington, I suggest you move or at least dine at the Red Hat. Wonderful for brunch, lunch and dinner. Have cocktails on the roof top garden over looking the River and dine inside or outside. Limited seating outside."

  • "Took my wife here for birthday lunch. Perfect views.Food was outstanding. I had the steak. Cooked as ordered. My wife had the fish and she raved about it. Definitely going back. Although there is no service during lunch, we were allowed to go up to the outside rooftop deck and it afforded a wonderful view of the Hudson River."

  • "I am from out of state and was meeting my best friend for lunch to celebrate a very special birthday milestone. There were four in our party and our table was ready and waiting. The outdoor setting is breathtaking. From our table upstairs, we had a wonderful view. The service was excellent, as was the food."

  • "Red hat by the river is no longer a secret. This French bistro along the scenic Hudson makes up for average food with great service and a very scenic view."

  • "We arrived early and went up to the rooftop bar for drinks and a stunning twilight view of the Hudson. When seated, we enjoyed two great entrees - scallops and salmon. Wait staff was very attentive and friendly. We dined while listening to live jazz. Overall, it was a completely divine experience for a summer evening dinner. Red Hat is a new favorite."

  • "We all ordered the fluke entree, a fish two of us had never had before, and it was outstanding. Fried golden brown and sweet-tasting, it was one of the best dishes I'd ever eaten. The vegetable accompaniments were expertly prepared, especially the green beans. We ordered a cone of crispy French fries to nibble along with the fish. I'd come to The Red Hat often if I didn't live in Montana. Friendly staff with uneven service, but our requests were always attended to after a bit of nudging."

  • "The view, atmosphere, ambience and especially the service were all awesome - but honestly the lack of variety in the entrees and/or the 2 fish entrees we ordered we good but not great. Perhaps we had too high of expectations for the food as it looks like the lunch menu/sandwiches available seem to offer more variety. Anyway, we had an excellent overall experience and I would recommend."

  • "An evening that surpassed all expectations. Knockout vews of the Hudson to the North and the City to the south.attentitive and professional waitstaff ecclectic menu has something for everyone and a wide range of price points. We were a happy bunch, indeed. Bonus was it's walking distance to metro north trains, making it possibe to enjoy an evening in the country. What a find."

  • "The view here is awesome and so were the drinks. My main dish was really good, I got the swordfish and my boyfriends dish was pretty tasty, he got the steak salad, but the portions are so small and over priced! For an appetizer we got ONE crab cake that cost $14 and I can't even say it was the size of a tennis ball. It was a little smaller. My bfs salad was more like an appetizer and my main dish also small. The atmosphere is really nice, beautiful view and great drinks. I loved the rooftop bar/lounge. If the prices matched the portions I might go back but the portions were way too small for the price you pay. The burgers looked pretty good in size but that was the only decent sized meal I saw pass by."

  • "Beautiful river view from outside and many inside tables, and his will be enough for many diners. However, the food is a little disappointing - not bad, but of mixed quality, and a little bland. Wine list is very limited. Service is eager, but can be a touch "hearty." Spectacular bar area on third floor."

  • "The Red Hat is exceptional in every way -- food, service, ambience, river view, convenient parking, easy access, different types of seating (such as roof top), and jazz on special evenings. They even accept out-of-date gift certificates, so what's not to love!"
