A word from Red Hat on the River
As MH Reed observed in the New York Times in February 2008, “Red Hat is so close to the river in Irvington that when the wind is up and the waves slap the shore, their icy spray covers the riverside path to the restaurant.” The two level, French bistro-inspired eatery is housed in a hundred -year -old factory building that has been transformed to feature an uninterrupted, 180 degree view of the river from the main and loft dining levels. Guests will enjoy the seasonal, Hudson Valley ingredients, as well as French bistro classics. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Excellent food, gorgeous view of the river. We always have a lovely meal at Red Hat. Make sure to get a table downstairs close to the windows."

  • "The Red Hat is one of the most inviting and delicious restaurants in the Hudson Valley. A true find - and labor of love clearly for its owners mary beth and Jimmy. Food's great. Service very good and extremely affable."

  • "This was another great experience at Red Hat. The staff could not have been better and the meal was one of the best we've ever had."

  • "The Red Hat is a gem. The food, the ambiance, the energy, and the location all come together for a terrific dining experience. It is highly recommended for anyone wanting a special dining experience. "

  • "Weather was wonderful but meal was outstanding. Wait service-Margaret-was friendly, helpful, attentive and gave us lots of history. We will be back and will bring friends."

  • "Winter is finally over!! Returned to Red Hat as we enjoyed a great sunset and dinner. We had a special bottle of wine from our cellar and they were cool with a corkage fee. Great table in the corner overlooking the water view. The staff has turned it up a notch and were all very attentive. Food (Bistro style) was very good. We'll be back regularly. "

  • "Ambiance excellent. Upon arrival, we were going to be seated upstairs....not my favorite spot. When I requested a downstairs table, the staff was polite, asked us to wait a few minutes, and we were seated at a table by the window :) Couldn't be more accommodating and friendly. Told the owner as I was leaving....."one of my favorite places" - winter, spring, summer or fall.""

  • "I have been here several times before and have never been disappointed. To start the ambience is great, nice decor, brightly lit and a great view of the Hudson River. Cocktails are great! Very professional bartender and friendly. Wait staff are knowledgeable and attentive. The food is simply marvelous!! Good variety of courses to choose from including appetizers. They even remembered it was my mom's birthday! Prefer tables on the main floor for the view. We have never had a bad experience there ever and have brought friends to dine with us and they have loved it. One of our favorite restaurants by far!!!!"

  • "Between the excellent service and delicious food it fit the occasion perfectly. With views of the Hudson and the night lights it was definitely worth the price."

  • "Dependable, affordable, and one of my favorite places north of the Westchester County line."

  • "I cannot imagine where Mary Beth and Jim Dooley found the stamina to rebuild their riverfront restaurant after superstorm Sandy tore it apart, but the former ad industry duo are so committed to producing appetizing meals with seasonal ingredients and a memorable dining experience that it still warrants the 55 minute trip north of the city. Dining in the high ceiling brick shell of a former green-house factory with unobstructed views of the river is a special treat. Even though their menu has a concentration on Franco-Pescatarian favorites, they deliver on carnivorous offerings as well. Just like the peekey-toe crab cakes, the duck and pork rillette (served as more of a terrine), with a creamy-mustard and shaved cornichons is a stand-out hit"

  • "Even on a busy Saturday evening, the quality holds up. The food is excellent, although not quite at the foodie level. The service is friendly and attentive with no hovering. We didn't feel rushed even though the bar was full of people waiting for tables. The sunset was gorgeous."

  • "Great view of the Hudson. Crowded, noisy, high energy spot. Excellent food. Friendly service."

  • "Celebrating being out of bed for three months! We had a late reservation (8:45 pm), the placed was packed! The receptionist was the only cold person we encountered the whole evening (both arriving and leaving). We waited at the bar and were treated like royal guests. The bartender was amazing, personality and talent. Another person came by with appetizers to keep us happy. The sweet potato chips at the bar...not to be missed! Each person's food was ooolalala! Culmination of all this: great food and the servers, those who were there to help and assist, we truly felt like royalty!"

  • "My wife and I loved this restaurant the food was very good as well as the service. It has a great view of the NYC Skyline. On the weekends the place is packed and noisy but if you want to have a good time try it."

  • "I had a wonderful time celebrating, congratulating and reminscing with a business associate who is about to move away from the area. We sat at a window table at sunset at 6 pm and remained until closing or there abouts. I couldn't tell you, because time was not an issue for that one evening. What a priceless gift!! I regret that we had not gotten together over the past two years and wanted to make this special. To Red Hat, I can say Well Done! Thank you so much for the fabulous seating, fantastic service and for helping to making this a memorable occassion."

  • "As this was our first date, I wanted everything to go perfect. The servers were very attentive, and professional. The food was great as well, and that made it easy for me to just focus on my beautiful date in front of me. I would definitely recommend the Red Hat, and can't wait to go back again!"

  • "We chose Red Hat to celebrate a birthday and we were not disappointed. The service was wonderful and food delicious. I chose Red Had because in addition to having "brunch foods" they had a lot of other option as well. A member of our party is gluten intolerant and brunch can be tricky— waffles, pancakes, etc. but they were very happy to see steak frites!"

  • "It's always a treat dining at Red Hat. Most times we go out we book on the spur of the moment, which due to its popularity, is not an typically not an option for Red Hat. But this time we were able to get in for brunch with a little planning and forethought. As is the norm for Red Hat, they did not disappoint. Between the 3 of us in attendance, we had the quinoa burger, Eggs Benedict and the Italian egg sandwich, each of which was brilliant. Service was crisp and congenial. Though the weather outside was somewhat frightful, the experience at Red Hat was delightful; a highly pleasant Sunday afternoon!"

  • "We initially chose the Red Hat for its great location, right on the banks of the Hudson River. It has super views of the Tappan Zee Bridge and the city in the distance. The restaurant itself is lovely and the food delicious. Service is excellent. We have since gone there for several special occasions as well as more casual dining. I highly recommend the Red Hat."

  • "We love Red Hat and will keep going back. The food, service and atmosphere are all fantastic. Can't wait for warmer weather so we can enjoy the rooftop bar and outdoor dining again."

  • "The food and service was great enough for me to go back. Also, since it was for my mother's birthday, the surprise they give according to the special request I made in the online reservation. All in all, I would definitely go back. Also, the restaurant prices were great!"

  • "The setting can't be beat, the atmosphere is comfortable and charming, and the cuisine ranges from the imaginative to the expected for the upscale French Bistro that it is. We attended for a Restaurant Week lunch. Best by far, and offered on the regular menu , were the rillettes ( duck and pork confit, with a side salad). The salmon entree looked lovely, and the key lime pie for dessert was terrific. The mussels, although plentiful, were not as flavorful as I had anticipated, despite the intoxicating smell of sauteed garlic and wine that permeated the restaurant. Overall, a great experience. On a second trip, I tried their burger with blue cheese dressing, which was outstanding. A great choice for a special occasion!"

  • "I had dinner here with friends a few days ago, and highly recommend it. The menu is full interesting dishes as well as specials, nice wine list, great view and attentive service. It was a wonderful evening. Added bonus is arriving by train from Grand central in 35 minutes, a 2 minute walk from the restaurant back to the station..I plan to return in the summer to visit the rooftop bar."

  • "The food was amazing. I had written that it was my birthday and I wanted a great view since I had never been there before and it was a special day, but that request was ignored and I was told that every seat had a good view - not true. I was seated upstairs in the back where I could barely see outside, and what I could see was through the window screen. I wish the service and ambience was as good as the chef."

  • "This was my first time at Red Hat. There were two of us in the party and we went for lunch. We had a seat by the window and had a great view of the river. In the warm weather, there are tables outside. The food and service were top notch. They offered a French onion soup made with a vegetable broth (instead of beef broth) which I really enjoyed since I am a vegetarian. The salmon was delicious, cooked just right and a generous size portion. The restaurant was quiet when we arrived but by the time we left it was full and kind of noisy. I would definitely recommend Red Hat and I will return, probably when outside seating becomes available."

  • "We went during restaurant week and had a fine meal. Onion soup was served a bit differently than usual. Both the salmon and the short ribs were excellent as was profiterole dessert. The river view at sunset was spectacular. For those not facing the river there were mirrors behind the seats facing so all could see the river. On a Thursday evening at 7:00 the restaurant was packed and there was a very active bar, not far removed from the ground level dining area. The noise level really detracted from the overall experience. The restaurant is in a former industrial building and the brick walls decorated with paintings does not do a good job absorbing sound. Were it not for the noise level we could have also checked "romantic.""

  • "Two of my friends and myself went to the Red Hat on the River for lunch for my birthday on Wednesday. I can't say enough about this restaurant. It was Hudson Valley Restaurant Week and the selections for lunch were wonderful -- everyone's dishes were so delicious. The view is beautiful right on the river and the staff was off the charts terrific!! I unfortunately spilled a glass of water and they were on us in a minute and so nice about cleaning up asking if we wanted to change tables or stay there and changing the table immediately. Our waiter was helpful, sweet and funny and I couldn't have asked for a better b'day lunch."

  • "This visit to the Red Hat was not too good, only OK"

  • "Although the view and ambiance remains one of the best the rest of their game has slipped dramatically. Food is fair, serving it hot might help. Asked for Salmon med rare arrived well done. Everything served cold, unforgivable. Wait staff is caring so someone fret into the kitchen and shake them up"

  • "The appetizer was a duck salad with pickled onions and horseradish dip, it was delicious. Then it only got better with Short ribs that were so juicy the meat fell off the bone, outstanding. We will definitely go again in the summer when we can enjoy the outdoor dining and views."

  • "On a chilly day, the greeting was warm, the seats at the window and the service immediate. The Restaurant Week menu was offered along with the regular menu. The offerings were so varied, we chose the Rest. Week. The duck & pork rillettes was delicious as was the Italian salad, a beautifully composed salad of greens, beets, blood oranges and mozzarella. There was salmon, short ribs, chicken pailliard salad and Angus burgers to choose from and we had the juiciest burgers and crispy frites. Everything was so fresh and delicious, not what is common on Rest Week menus. The service was amazing given the place was packed. The profiterole dessert was a decadent way to end a perfect meal. We've been there before and will definitely be back."

  • "Everything was great except that the waiter put down the special pastries on our plates and then told us there was an extras charge for them. We should have been told the charge and asked before we selected them and they wre on the dishes"

  • "The beef was amazing, I have not had a meal this good in awhile. I couldn't normally afford to eat here, but I was glad to be able to try the food during restaurant week."

  • "Went during restaurant week. Food was great, so was service. Noise level is very high though. If you want a quiet spot to eat this is not the place. Views of Hudson River are amazing."
