A word from Red Hat on the River
As MH Reed observed in the New York Times in February 2008, “Red Hat is so close to the river in Irvington that when the wind is up and the waves slap the shore, their icy spray covers the riverside path to the restaurant.” The two level, French bistro-inspired eatery is housed in a hundred -year -old factory building that has been transformed to feature an uninterrupted, 180 degree view of the river from the main and loft dining levels. Guests will enjoy the seasonal, Hudson Valley ingredients, as well as French bistro classics. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Know what the best kept secret in Irvington is? It's Red Hat on the River! From the shimmering late afternoon sun on the Hudson to the amicable staff to the amazing food, the Red Hat has it all. We surprised a friend with a birthday dinner and by the end of the meal she said she couldn't think of any place she would rather be. That comment says it all. Grab your honey, a few friends and enjoy a great evening on the River. MaryBeth and Jimmy went out of their way to make us feel like regulars, when in fact, we were first timers. What a wonderful dining experience."

  • "Red Hat is a river-town gem, and never disappoints. We had a lovely meal - everything cooked well and served quickly and efficiently. I learned on this occasion that the prosecco split was an especially good choice in the summertime - cold and festive, and a good buy."

  • "The food (we had swordfish and salmon). Crab cake was delicious as we'll. not to mention the chocolate base dessert. Service was warm and the ambiance was great. Must try!"

  • "I specifically requested a downstairs table (NOT upstairs) or possibly outside if not too hot. When we arrived on time there was no table downstairs available for us. They said they had a couple of wheelchair needs which affected the tables. It was much too muggy to sit outside so we had to go upstairs. It was not too hot but is indeed too noisy even at lunch. The hostess was rather condescending about our request and it not really being important. Our actual waitress upstairs was very good."

  • "The Red Hat is a find for Westchester folks as it really has everything: very good food, a beautiful dining room where it and the large outside deck have direct views of the Hudson, and pleasant service. It's also dependable."

  • "for is good, staff is polite and attentive, meals tend to be overpriced"

  • "Beautiful view of the Hudson, imaginative food for lunch, and pleasant staff. I would recommend it, especially in nice weather."

  • "The setting is just spectacular and the food is very good. Love the old factory buildings and of course the river. The Arugula and Jersey Peach salad with chicken was "summery" and delicious with an ample portion of well seasoned grilled chicken. Perfect spot to share a lovely couple of hours with friends."

  • "Service was attentive although maybe a bit pushy and could have been more professional."

  • "I really liked the decor of this place and every table has a wonderful view of the Hudson River. There is also great outdoor seating. It is a little bit more of a wait so if you asked to be seated outside when you make your reservation if you want to sit outside. The service was great. The food is very good especially the salads."

  • "Had a great time. Food was very good. Try the Steak Frites."

  • "We went for the view and the relaxed outdoor atmosphere. But on that night, the skies opened up and the down-pour came. We experienced a typical, almost tropical, torrential rain with high winds and 50 degree temps. So, we spent our time inside and still had a nice time. We sat down stairs, facing the Hudson. Food was good, service was efficient, and the crowd was business smart. We will go back again and try to enjoy the whole experience, with better weather, outdoor dining, and drinks on the roof. I can see why this is a hot spot and reservations are hard to get."

  • "The food was really great. Requested outdoor seating. Was told reservation was only for inside. Outside seating had a 1 1/2 hour wait. The table they gave us was no where near the windows to see the view & it was VERY loud."

  • "Enjoyed a delicious dinner inside, followed by relaxing outdoors and watching the sun set. Very pleasant evening."

  • "If cocktails and a view are most important to you, then come to Red Hat, if food and noise level are most important, then I would suggest you find a different restaurant. The sword fish tacos (4 bite size tacos for $16) was a joke and the hanger steak could not be chewed. The scallops and salmon burger had more salt than fish. The service was great and they tried, but they could only do so much. A special occasion not well spent."

  • "Wanted a place to bring my parents and my kids for a casual yet sophisticated lunch during the summer and this was perfect. The view kept my kids attention and impressed my parents. We all found the food to be wonderful and original. And go for an order of French Fries for the table. They're delicious!"

  • "My husband and I returned here after having had a lovely meal exactly one year ago on Fourth of July weekend. Exactly one year later, it was an entirely different experience - terrible food, mediocre service - disappointing in every way! We started with a soggy microwaved crab cake and asparagus appetizer - both bland and insipid. The swordfish on our entrees was clearly not fresh - displeasing to the palate. Desserts were acceptable but not outstanding. Except for the rooftop cocktails that we had before dinner (that helped numb the pain of the meal), there was little redeeming about the Red Hat. Stroll along the river, wear a red hat, but eat somewhere else!"

  • "We really enjoyed it - even though it was in the middle of a severe T-storm. Which means next time when the weather is good, we will enjoy it even more - can't wait to sit on the roof top bar before dinner to have a drink and look at the river. Nice crowd - jazz music during dinner too - overall pleasant experience."

  • "Service slow and had to ask for things (Bread, etc.) Tree different salads all delicious. Although the steak salad had too much dressing. But such a pleasant atmosphere. Always fun. Will return."

  • "First time at Red Hat on the River. I took my girlfriend there for her birthday. We had a great time. The food was excellent. The service was great. Our waitress Stephie was outstanding. We loved the fact that you can dine downstairs, upstairs or outside on the patio. The rooftop for drinks is nice. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. We will definitely be going back soon."

  • "My husband and I had the pleasure of visiting Red Hat since we were in the area and had read the reviews here on Open Table. The experience more than met our expectations. The location and it's stunning views of the Hudson on a warm and sunny summer day set the atmosphere for what was a lovely evening. Arriving a bit early for our reservation allowed us to enjoy the roof top bar view and vibe. We were seated outside as requested for dinner and were impressed with the menu selections, food and service. As the sun set and the temperature dropped it was lovely that the hostess came to the table to offer me a pashmina, red of course, which allowed me the extra bit of comfort as I finished dining."

  • "Tasty fare and a beauriful river view. The Red Hat is a neighborhood gem located on the Husdon River. However, if you don't live in Irvington, I suggest you move or at least dine at the Red Hat. Wonderful for brunch, lunch and dinner. Have cocktails on the roof top garden over looking the River and dine inside or outside. Limited seating outside."

  • "We have been here many times and always enjoy the food, drinks, service, and view. I recommend downstairs seating, the view and ambience are better and sometimes you get large tables of loud drunk jerks upstairs that make conversation impossible. Drinks will come faster downstairs as well. The menu is great and changes seasonally. I've never had a bad meal and particularly love the scallops and the steak frites. The cosmopolitan is not to be missed. My only real complaint with this place is that it's so IMPOSSIBLE to book, particularly in the spring and summer. You must plan weeks ahead for a prime Fri/Sat booking. When I do score one, I feel I've won some kind of challenge."

  • "Took my wife here for birthday lunch. Perfect views.Food was outstanding. I had the steak. Cooked as ordered. My wife had the fish and she raved about it. Definitely going back. Although there is no service during lunch, we were allowed to go up to the outside rooftop deck and it afforded a wonderful view of the Hudson River."

  • "I am from out of state and was meeting my best friend for lunch to celebrate a very special birthday milestone. There were four in our party and our table was ready and waiting. The outdoor setting is breathtaking. From our table upstairs, we had a wonderful view. The service was excellent, as was the food."

  • "We arrived early and went up to the rooftop bar for drinks and a stunning twilight view of the Hudson. When seated, we enjoyed two great entrees - scallops and salmon. Wait staff was very attentive and friendly. We dined while listening to live jazz. Overall, it was a completely divine experience for a summer evening dinner. Red Hat is a new favorite."

  • "We all ordered the fluke entree, a fish two of us had never had before, and it was outstanding. Fried golden brown and sweet-tasting, it was one of the best dishes I'd ever eaten. The vegetable accompaniments were expertly prepared, especially the green beans. We ordered a cone of crispy French fries to nibble along with the fish. I'd come to The Red Hat often if I didn't live in Montana. Friendly staff with uneven service, but our requests were always attended to after a bit of nudging."
