Diner Reviews
  • "During our dinner at the restaurant, as well as our stay at the Inn, we experienced exceptionally friendly and attentive service. That made our visit to Middleburg all the more enjoyable."

  • "I took my sweetheart here for a special occasion hoping everything would be perfect and it was. The food, the atmosphere and the service made for a great evening."

  • "4 of us thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. Two of us had the pulled pork sandwiches - the abundant pork was tender and the sauce had an excellent "vinegary" pop. The crab cake platter and the trout were also enjoyed, and the grits that came with the crab cakes were devoured with gusto. The service was friendly and attentive. We hadn't been to the Red Fox Inn for a year or so, and I'd have to say that the food was better than when we'd been there before! We will be back."

  • "My wife and I found the Red Fox to be an outstanding destination for lunch. We drove from Annapolis to enjoy the Virginia countryside and enjoy lunch at the Red Fox, Our lunch was among the top 5 lunches we have ever had ... anywhere. The trout entree was superb. Our waitperson was terrific, as well."

  • "Everyone was friendly. Service was spot on. The food was very good and the atmosphere was perfect. We plan to return for another great evening."

  • "The Red Fox Inn is a great country lunch/dinner spot. The crab cake platter with cheese grits was delicious as was the pecan pie and carrot cake to finish it off. The building is from the early 1800s and it's cozy and very comfortable. Middleburg is also a beautiful town to explore"

  • "Having dinner in Middleburg's historic Red Fox Inn is a treat. We stayed overnight and had a quiet, delightful room in the heart of the village. There were not many diners on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, and we had very attentive service. The breakfast was hearty and prepared as ordered. Our dinner of crab cakes and filet mignon, the evening before, were delicious."

  • "Was overcharged for a salad ordered ($10 vs $7). I called the restaurant and they provided a refund (I hope). Some time back I ordered a side Cesaur Salid for $4. I was asked if I wanted anchovies and I said yes. Many people consider anchovies to be as much a part of this sali as lettuce. To my dissapointment I was charged $5 for 5 small anchovies. When I questioned the waitress she said anchovies are considered to be a "side" and are listed at the bottom of the menue. I said I was not expecting this as I have NEVER been charged extra for anchovies. I guess next time Lettuce will be a side!!! The anchovies were more than the salad cost!!!"

  • "We sat in the back room by the fire and my guests were very pleased with the new arrangement of tables (old booths removed) and the fire and general atmosphere. Food is always excellent and we lingered over lunch."

  • "My wife and I went out with another couple for a special occasion. We had appetizers, salads, wine and a desert and everything was very good. The service was prompt and polite. The my wife had the beef spare ribs which were fork tender and delicious. I had the ribeye with shredded brussel sprouts. The brussel sprouts were outstanding and are highly recommended for your side. We had a great evening with our friends and will definitely go back again on special occasions."

  • "We enjoyed the small, cozy environment, the lower noise level and the "village feel". The menu matched the environment: interesting basic choices prepared creatively , including some local fare--a number of the options can be personalized to taste and attention to taste was clearly evident in the preparation. Loved the shrimp and grits -- my first clue that this would be a great dining experience. My steak was done to perfection and my partner savored her fish option, made all the more interesting because of the preparation with an unusual mix of vegetables and seasonings. Although it was crowded (reservations a must on a Saturday), the service was courteous, unhurried and attentive. The only disappointment was the creme brulee,"

  • "Matt was our waiter. He was great and very knowledgeable about the restaurant, the food, and the area! The food was delicious, the service was good and dinner was served a a good pace. It was a bit pricey but you get what you pay for, It is a nice place to go to celebrate a special occasion or when you feel like some really good food!"

  • "We dined at the red fox for our anniversary and it was as perfect as always. The crab cakes are absolutely delicious and the short ribs were fabulous. Our server was attentive and knowledgable when it came to the wine selection. We love staying at the red fox and dining here as often as possible, but this night was definitely stellar."

  • "We had a fantastic time and dining experience. It was a going away luncheon for a dear friend, a small group of five women. The weather was rainy and cold but the ambience and roaring fire took the chill away. Wonderful waiter, very attentive and he made a great wine recommendation. The food was outstanding, I had the Rueben and I have never had a better one - perfect with all the ingredients! We have decided to make this a ritual as everyone is so friendly! Kudos."

  • "We had six visitors from Dubai and wanted to give them an American experience of dining. They were all charmed with the ambiance , history and food. It was a perfect town to walk around before the dining. It is Emory that they won't forget!"

  • "This was our second time dining at Red Fox and we were impressed once again. We were nearby at wineries and decided to make a reservation for an early dinner on a whim. Needless to say, we were so glad we decided to go. Being that I'm a born and raised Marylander I have very high standards for Crab Cakes and I was hesitant to order them. The waitress assured me they are known for them so I decided to take a gamble. I was so satisfied with my decision; the crab cakes are wonderful, barely any filler whatsoever, and quite large. My boyfriend couldn't resist ordering the Fried Chicken that he is so fond of and was once again very happy. We have another reservation for this coming weekend to celebrate our anniversary and I'm very excited!"

  • "It is usually easy to find something wrong with a restaurant, not here, not an inexpensive place to eat but not overpriced for the food and service, plus you are in not only northern Virginia but Middleburg. Great place. We get to northern Virginia four or five times each year and We will return."

  • "Well done - the setting and ambience of this historic inn was warm, cozy, and welcoming. The brunch menu offered excellent selections and variety as well as something for the kids. Everything served was appealing and delicious - the service was attentive and professional. On site parking alleviated need to pay meter on street which was a nice benefit. Centrally located in Middleburg - a quaint town with great local shops that is walkable.Highly recommended - worth the price and they given option for two or three course brunch."

  • "I recently found a list of the oldest taverns in the US - the Red Fox Inn was listed at #6, being built in 1728. So, I took my wife and daughter there for Sunday brunch. We had a great time - the inn was a great old building with tons of character. The food was really good, the drinks were very tasty, and the service was exactly as friendly and attentive as we'd want it to be. We're looking forward to trying them again for dinner soon. I would certainly recommend the Red Fox Inn to anyone looking to visit Middleburg and have a great meal."

  • "We have always enjoyed Sunday brunch at the Red Fox Inn, but at the most recent visit (March 2, 2013) we discovered an even more interesting and wonderful menu and improved decor and organization! We thoroughly enjoyed our table by the rear fireplace in this most lovely historic building, and the service was great! Will be back soon!"

  • "Have dined at the Red Fox previously and enjoyed it then, as well. Had friends visiting from Philly. We also were getting together with some other friends who currently live in the Winchester area. All six of us originally came from Philly. We decided to meet at the Red Fox for dinner. Our friends from Philly were very pleased with the selection. As indicated above, everything was great. I should like to especially mention our server, Brad. His service was 'above and beyond', as the saying goes. To be fair, we arrived somewhat early; so it wasn't really crowded. However, that is not to take away from his service. He was pleasant and friendly while still remaining professional. We certainly will be coming back to the Red Fox Inn."

  • "This was our third visit to stay overnight! Been to the restaurant for lunch and dinner several times. First time this happened I ordered my dinner and received the wrong dinner. The next day we checked out and the dinner was not put on our bill. Had to wait for it to be checked out. When we said we asked for the dinner to be put on our room bill the lady at the desk said "oh you received the wrong dinner". I just looked at her and wondered why did you know this! We enjoyed our visit and will be back. This was just alittle bump in the road!"

  • "The peanut soup was an incredible start to the finish of the lamb sausage with butternut fettuccine and risotto. Just amazing food. Loved their collection and support of local wines, on top of many other choices. Unique, peaceful ambiance with a colonial touch. I definitely recommend this for a date night, for a quieter night out, and simply because of the scenic drive to get there. A great escape from the busy-ness of city life."

  • "The wife and I had a kid-free day thanks to grandma and decided to spend a nice afternoon alone starting with brunch at the Red Fox Inn. I had requested a table by the fireplace and that is exactly what we got.. The hostesses were personable and were excited to help us celebrate our much-needed quiet time. The service was low-key but helpful, timely and courteous. The place itself was quiet but not "dead." Just a real nice calming atmosphere. The smoked bacon was delicious and cooked just right. Cocktails were a little pricey for what we got, but the prix fixe brunch menu was reasonable. Good portion sizes, as well. We would return for brunch or a nice dinner and would recommend to anyone."

  • "...at least for a special occasion...We had dinner at the Red Fox Inn the day after Valentine's Day. Restaurant called twice in adance to make sure we were (a) still coming; (b) aware of the special, fixed-price, set menu ($160/couple); and (c) that we had no food allergies--a bit redundant, but a nice touch....Not sure why I had no choice of any dinner setting but 5:00--2 hours later restaurant was still not full...Also, due to snow, two substitutions on the menu, no big deal, but no reduction in price either...Food was outstanding--best filet I have ever had (girlfriend's meal) and best lamb I've ever had...Desserts were equally memorable...Definitely save it for a special occasion, but do go...."

  • "We drove about 45 minutes to Middleburg just to eat at the Red Fox Inn. The inn has a rich history with an ambiance that takes you back a few hundred years. Great fun. The food was great and my party thoroughly enjoyed their menu selections. I was a little disappointed in the country fried steak. It wasn't bad (I did eat the whole thing), but I guess I had high expectations. It made me wish as though I had gone with one of their other well-known-for items. Service was also great - the waitress was very pleasant and attended to us throughout the meal. A family did come in half-way through our meal with a crying baby which they couldn't quiet down. Not the inn's fault - but it did subtract from my overall experience. Will go again!"

  • "We ate here for Valentines dinner. They offered a nice 4 course sitting, which was exccellent, however the service was not what we are used to on a normal weekend. It seems they opened up the second level, which was very nice, fireplace, romantic, etc., but they must have brought in some part-time wait staff. Although the food and wine was excellent as usual, the service was a little weak."

  • "Red Fox is our favorite in Middleburg. Everytime we go the experience is wonderful. Everyone is extremely nice and the food is great. There was a set menu for Valentines Day, which was quite nice as the menu consisted of food not on the regular menu. Great Job."

  • "The Red Fox Inn dinning is always an enjoyable time for us for an afternoon escape for fine food, atmosphere, service and often a relaxing time and special treat with out-of-area friends. At the Red Fox Inn you can literally walk into another time and atmosphere that allows you, for a time, to escape today's rush and cell phones, sit, relax and enjoy delicious Virginia inspired foods, wine and conversation. In short, time spent there enjoying fine fare, good conversation and relaxation is equivalent to an afternoon spent at a therapeutic spa. And, the staff compliments your time there by focusing on you."
