A word from Red Egg
Originally opened in 2008 as both a Peruvian and Cantonese restaurant, owner and culinary director Darren Wan decided to reconceptualize the already successful restaurant in 2010 into the chic, upscale and exclusively Cantonese format that it is today.

Melding traditional Chinese cuisine with a hip and contemporary venue, RED EGG caters to those looking for excellence in their cuisine as well as in the ambiance they want to enjoy it in. In addition to the Cantonese and Szechuan specialties menu, RED EGG features classic Cantonese dim sum throughout the day.

Recently awarded the Bib Gourmand rating in the MICHELIN Guide New York City 2011. Don't forget to try the Peking Duck Sliders, Pan Fried Dumplings and Red Egg Filet Mignon to name a few.

Diner Reviews
  • "This restaurant offers excellent Chinese food for lunch at reasonable prices. I was on Jury Duty and the day before we went to another chinese restaurant in the area and the service was terrible as was the ambiance, etc. The Red Egg was clean, with excellent food and excellent attentive service."

  • "dim sum was so good we had to get entrees to try the whole menu my family is ready to go back"

  • "For Fathers Day my brother and I took our parents here for lunch. We weren't disappointed. The beef skewers were amazing and their dumplings are great. Highly recommend this place for a cheap, no-hassle kind of lunch."

  • "We always go to this local with my family! amazing food and it has a full bar which is rare in most chinatown restaurants. The duck pancakes are great as the whole or half duck is brought out and cut in front of the table and put into the steamed buns and served to the table!"

  • "Dim sum is excellent. It is prepared specifically for your table. No carts at this place, so if you're looking for that "experience," you'll be disappointed. If you're looking for good food, you'll be pleased."

  • "Dimsum was ok but other dishes were disappointing.. there won't be second visit for me.."

  • "Great food as usual. Ambience is a definitely plus here...not your typical Chinese Restaurant w/ all that noise & bustle during dim sum hours. However, disappointed egg custard is not available here. Manager(s) / wait staff were very professional & understanding due to our error on our dim sum order form. Would definitely dine here again."

  • "Delicious Dim Sum served in civilized setting with knowledgeable hosts and servers and many unique offerings -- no surly ladies with carts but lots of freshly prepared tidbits."

  • "Food is tasty. Service horrible. Let standing at front door host stand for almost 10 minutes before I could get anyone to help me...in a restaurant that only had two seated tables! Felt rushed. "

  • "Traditional and creative dim sum in a clean, sane, attractive setting that attracts enthusiastic Asians and other admirers of Chinese cuisine in large numbers but also accepts reservation. No ladies with carts but knowledgeable young servers and more experience hosts can explain ingredients and make suggestions if you need them."

  • "Restaurant in need of a reburb.... food v/bland, service friendly but difficult to find way to restaurant. "

  • "The food was mediocre and the waiters were rude. I went on a saturday night at 9:00 and the place was dead. The decor was okay but the lights were too bright and created a bad atmosphere. Don't go out of your way to go here; there are much better places. "

  • "Great, fast service! The dim sum was fantastic and they have a large selection. The best thing I liked about Red Egg is that they take reservations so you're not waiting with a crowd like most dim sum restaurants."

  • "Creative as well as traditional dim sum preparations with helpful, friendly servers."

  • "This is a step up from greasy Chinatown joints but not a huge leap. Food is fresh and tasty, though not refined or inventive. Atmosphere is tacky but okay. Overall nothing special but a notch above the low-end food you find in most Chinatown restaurants."

  • "My friend has been searching for a good and clean dimsum place and I recommended Red Egg. She was very happy with the quality of food and cleanless of the restaurant. We're definitely coming back!"

  • "I love Chinese food, but it has to be good. And Red Egg delivers the goods. Fresh and inventive dim sum, a mastery of the classics like General Tso's Chicken, rapturous delights like Chilean Sea Bass in Black Bean Sauce and Peking Duck Sliders. Go and Enjoy."

  • "We chose to celebrate Chinese New Year at Red Egg on Saturday afternoon both because they had good reviews on various sites as well as the fact that they accept reservations. They have a wide variety of food choices, but we were there for Dim Sum and were not disappointed. We particularly liked the soup dumplings, the pork cilantro shrimp dumplings, and the young coconut pudding (which is served in its coconut shell). We appreciated the fact that we could order off the normal menu instead of being forced to order from a "special" holiday menu. We'll be back!"

  • "Red Egg takes reservations, has accommodating staff, has an A rating in the window and has the best duck and duck sliders in Chinatown. The food is delicious! Great for groups"

  • "In 8 years of OpenTable dining, we've never run into this problem. We checked in 10 minutes early for 1 pm lunch on a Friday. Waited for 30 minutes and then left and went down the street to another restaurant and had a nice lunch. They seemed very disorganized. There were at least 3 other groups waiting when we arrived but only 1 with an Opentable reservation (I was sitting next to their computer) and 2 booths that were free and never got used while we were there. Our name was added to a handwritten list.....we were number 8 on her list (???). The place was packed so I assume the food was great. There was a huge round table of guests right by the bathroom that you had to walk around to get to - glad I wasn't seated there."

  • "Ambiance is fine, food is decent, but extremely overpriced. $30-40 per entree for Chinese food near Chinatown? I don't think so honey."

  • "Really enjoyed the food, waiter made some fantastic suggestions which complimented the dishes we were trying. Definitely go with the dim sum menu and choose a variety of dishes."

  • "Somewhat suspicious abt a restaurant in Chinatown needinga reservation but my husband did not want to take a chance abt waiting somewhere. Odd, clubby decor. Maybe it's a hot spot later at night? Ordered 3 dim sum- pork buns, shrimp dumplings & ribs with garlic. Buns & dumplings were okay but the ribs were deep fried? How would we have known this from the menu? How would we have known to even ask if this were a possibility? Noodles w/ black mushrooms were tasteless & gummy. Sauteed scallops w/ pea pods were better. Left food on the plates, not something we usually do. Bottom line- do more research. So many other possibilities in Chinatown that must be better. And they did not check us in as Open Table members."

  • "I had read the reviews and their website before booking. One of the reasons I booked for an early dinner was that the website stated happy hour until 7pm. The website didn't say anything about holiday exceptions. We (a group of 10) booked for New Years Day. After getting there, we discovered that there was no happy hour on holidays. The food was pretty good, but not exceptional. I probably wouldn't go back."

  • "Service was neither friendly nor efficient, and the food was just O.K, not worth the subway ride from midtown...it was a real letdown on Christmas day."
    Dined on 12/25/2013
  • "When you first enter and see the bar it looks kind of cool.....keep walking further into the restaurant and it starts looking like a cheap diner. The service was pretty crummy. Cloths on some tables and no cloths on the others. Just kind of icky. Waiter was hard to understand and he was having trouble understanding us. But the food was pretty darn good....only very expensive. All in all I would not return."

  • "good value for the price, we went as a group of 3 people and paid only $50 for 4 dim sum's and 1 entree"

  • "A friend recommended this spot on the fringe of Chinatown and it is a great spot. The regular menu is lengthy and there is a daytime and night time Dim Sum menu to choose from. The wait staff is pleasant and with capable English able to help you with unfamiliar selections or special requests--which they were happy to provide. Lots to choose from, and everything we selected was excellent. I am going to make this a regular stop when I am in NYC and looking for great Chinese food."

  • "Excellent food, big portions, but we got a table up the front under an air-con vent which wasn't great."

  • "Even though Red Egg has a regular menu, we partook from the Dim Sum menu. I fully appreciated the abilitity to ask questions as needed and check what I wanted from the listing. Our selections ranged from grilled meats to steamed buns and dumplings to fried rolls and dumplings. Everything we had was delicious and hot! The only downside was that there was only one cold choice from the Dim Sum menu we had and it was one in which we were not interested. We had red wine with the meal, which was satisfactory. But overall, it was an enjoyable and filling meal! It is not a big place so reservations are recommended."

  • "We started out in Chinatown @ Jing Fong, we explained a member of our party had a seafood allergy and they still served us shrimp! Then they got rude & plopped a plate of gelatinous plain rice noodle down telling us to eat that!! We left & went to the Red Egg What a wonderful experience @ the Red Egg! The wait staff was so solicitous! Taking the time to review the dim sum menu to point out the items which included seafood, then separating the selections when they served. The Peking Duck sliders!! They prepared @ our table & explained how the combinations of ingredients enhanced the flavor of the duck. The atmosphere was nice, not kitschy, black lacquer tables, white leather seating, subdued lighting. Absolutely going back to the Red Egg."

  • "I had dinner with a friend this week and was floored at how good the food was. We sampled the pork and shrimp shumai which was delicious, the beef skewers- a chef's favorite and at Alan the senior waiter's recommendation we had the garlic chicken which was out of this world. We'll be back!"

  • "We have been going to Red Egg since it first opened. The food has been consistently good: authentic Chinese and freshest ingredients. The dim sum appetizers (served even at dinner) and Peking Duck sliders are must-haves. There is an excellent selection of wines with suggestions to pair with the dishes."
