Diner Reviews
  • "Came here with a group of friends to try out Red Cow during Seattle Restaurant Week. Based on the name, I thought the beef was the main attraction. I also read a recent review about the fries not being crispy...this visit was not the case, everyone loved the fries. After tasting everyone's food, the Roasted Chicken was actually the star of the entrees. For the appetizers, the Frisee, Bacon, & Poached Egg was the best of the three. For desserts, all the options were spectacular. Will definitely be back to try out their regular menu. Decor is very sleek, modern, and has a neighborhood feel."

  • "Notable item was definitely the short ribs which were excellent but between them and the overladen plate of frites it felt like a heart attack on a plate. Fillet was overdone and tasteless even when doused with sauce. Frites are exceptionally good but way, way tooo many on the plate and. Veggies separate but we didn't order and should have to try and balance this out. Wine list is good but a tad pricey. Would have appreciated more wine selections in the lower to mid range. The chacuterie plate was good but was missing good pheasant bread which it so needed instead of little toasts as well as a few more "pickled items" to accompany it. ."

  • "Ecxcellent service was the best part of our visit. The food was good, but for steaks that average around $35, it should have been better - and at other restaurants there are..."

  • "An excellent take on French Bistro a la 'Steak Frites". Amazingly wonderful French Fries ! Great and interesting Charcuterie."

  • "The food here is fantastic. Kudos to Ethan Stowell for another great restaurant."

  • "Great food, friendly service and when asked good suggestions. The restaurant is a little noise and parking can be a problem, but we will definitely go again.. . ."

  • "All Red Cow needs is some sound buffering. It is brutally loud for a dinner spot in Madrona. Maybe a shelf around the sides of the ceiling with grass growing and model cows? Red Cows? Great food, drinks & service."

  • "I took my partner here for her birthday and it was well worth it. She is a foodie so I am always a bit nervous when I have to choose our dining experience. She found the Charcuterie to be exceptional and continued talking about it through the weekend. The atmosphere was fun and our server was outstanding. He was very attentive and did a great job taking care of us. I am so thankful that we live in walking distance to this great restaurant. We will be returning soon!"

  • "Good food, service a little slow. A group of four of us went and had a great meal. Even the one vegetarian in our group found some great food at this steak and frittes joint."

  • "We both ordered steak frites, it being our first time and wanting to check out the specialty of the house, one NY steak and one hangar steak., along with sides of brussel sprouts and kale. The quality of the meat was only average (though prepared well enough)l -- surprising given that the prices were in the fine-dining range and the dishes prominently featured by the restaurant. The sides were pedestrian -- too much butter and bacon overwhelming the flavor of the vegetables. We both felt we could have made this meal at home with better results, purchasing meat from a good butcher. All disappointing as we live in the neighborhood and were hoping it would become a hang out for us."

  • "Rib eye for 2 was more than enough for 3. I think they put the cut meat on a hot plate so it continued to cook. Still tasted great, but I like my steak rare. Can't believe how loud it gets in there though. It's pretty obnoxious so I'll probably bring ear plugs for next time."

  • "I was expecting this to be a great steak house but both my steak and my wife's were mediocre. Small cuts and undercooked. For a steak house I was underwhelmed. Service was great. expecting a full house but it was only half full"

  • "I really wanted to like this restaurant as I have enjoyed dining at several of the other Ethan Stowell establishments and have had a good time and good meals. At 7 on a Monday, the restaurant was packed. Small, attractive interior, but with all the hard surfaces it was really, really loud. The noise was the first thing I noticed when I walked in. The steak was ok. The Brussels sprouts were not what I was expecting from the menu description - Brussels sprouts and bacon. The bacon was more like ham chunks. The sprouts were browned and served in a puddle of ham juice. All and all not the crispy bacon-y deliciousness I was expecting. The waiter gave a great recommendation on the wine. The service was good."

  • "Food was good, table service fair BUT noise level made this place a big disappointment. We were a party of 4. And although we'd gone early (5:30) and requested a quiet table, we wee unable to carry on any conversation after about 6 pm. Too bad. We were hoping for better. But will not return unless something changes dramatically"

  • "Really looked forward to the new restaurant in our neighborhood, especially an Ethan Stowell place. Service was very friendly & helpful. We all had the signature steak frites--meat & sauces were very good, but the fries were much too salty. All of that could have been overlooked except for the fatal flaw that ALL restaurants in this space have encountered since the building went up: the NOISE is nearly unbearable. With no "soft surfaces", sound echoes in the vault-like space and people end up shouting. Our party of four (including teenagers with good ears) could not hear each other across the table. The space conforms to the designs of the architect-artist property owner, but although striking, it's uncomfortable, unfriendly, cold, loud."

  • "Like all of Ethan Stowell's restaurants, Red Cow has a beautiful interior, warm service, great wine list and amazing food. With a French twist, the starters are a great assortment of pates, rillettes and spreads - of the four we tried, the salt cod was a surprise favorite. Salads are large enough to share. Mains are also large portions. We ordered the pork chop, which was thick, juicy and well seasoned, and the short ribs, which were tender, rich and flavorful. Chop came with a terrific veg hash -short ribs came with a pile of fries that sort of overwhelmed the plate - tasty but so many! Cocktails are inventive and the wine list has many interesting bottles at reasonable prices. Only bummer - very noisy so conversation is difficult."

  • "The noise level in this restaurant makes it impossible to enjoy the food. Cremant had the same problem, which was well-known and why I expected it to be addressed. Please understand, I do not and did not expect a quiet or even less-than-energetic ambience; in fact, I prefer an energetic dining experience. What I do expect is to hear my dining companions voices across a table and to not have to use my "outside voice" while talking over dinner. I have been to Red Cow three times, and after this last experience, I decided to write a review. I encourage the restaurant to address this issue soon."

  • "Everything we ordered was too salty, lacked other flavors, meat not grilled but done sous vide (customers should be told in advance as the focus of menu is beef!), nice waiter, high noise level, nice to see families, in our neighborhood, had high expectations since owner has several other restaurants, not likely to return too soon. Other friends who have tried Red Cow in the past two weeks report same comments."

  • "A little trendy pretentious for my taste Music a little too loud Fries great"

  • "Great food but don't plan on conversation. We had hoped new management would overcome noise issues, but not so - same deafening roar bouncing off ceiling and walls that existed under Cremant. Don't understand why owners do not appreciate the technology that so many types of noise dampening materials can provide."

  • "Great food, great service and a much better ambience than its predecessor. Chicken liver mousse was heavenly; scallops cooked to perfection with great accompaniments (the ham really makes it). Tasty and fresh beet salad and the best brussel sprouts dish I have ever had. I just need to save some room for the profiteroles next time..."

  • "It is wonderful to have this charming steak frites restaurant in Madrona. Everything was delicious and this could be some of the best meat in town. The portions were generous, the fries were divine as well as the sides. The chicken liver mousse was slightly better than the duck rillettes, so if that is the only downside, then we have a winner! The negative was the level of salt seemed a bit high and the place was noisy with all the hard surfaces., but we will certainly be back!"

  • "Good food, good wine and they didn't mess up the meat. I would recommend this restaurant to a friend because of the location and the menu. Outside of that, be ready to sit down, order, eat and drink and then leave. Conversation, at least one you don't want your neighbors to hear, is nearly impossible. It's loud, is what I'm saying. The noise level I mean, it's quite high."

  • "We had a great time dining with 6 friends in the restaurant - certainly some of the best steak we've had in Seattle and a really great staff. We each had a cocktail followed by wine + dinner and everything was delicious. I think the Manhattan and hanger steak were our favorites. Thank you!"

  • "Dinners for all were sensational. My husband, who is a burger connoisseur, said his burger was the best he has EVER eaten. Loved the place too."

  • "We enjoyed the food but the restaurant is much too loud and there's nothing there to absorb the sound. Service was quick and very friendly and all the food was well-prepared. The entrees were HUGE and we were very satisfied with one steak frites to share plus two side dishes and one dessert. Great selection of wine and cocktails and the dessert (pear almond tart with creme fraiche ice cream) was excellent!"

  • "The food was amazing - I've never eaten a better tasting steak (the fillet mignon). But the noise level was way too high. My husband and I couldn't hear ourselves talk. Perhaps a rug would help."

  • "My friend and I went last Saturday night at 8:30. We were seated at a table in the bar area and had a great experience. Our waiter was awesome; very attentive and accommodating. We ordered and shared the New York steak frites- which were cooked perfectly and came as a very large portion (definitely enough to split); the frisee salad with bacon- delish, the potato and leek soup- needed to add salt, and the profiteroles- to die for! I did like the ambience and felt it would be a good "date" place, but if you are looking for a cozy, romantic spot, this might not be it. The restaurant was full and very loud and at times it was difficult to hear my friend across the table. Overall a great place though and definitely worth trying."

  • "The acoustics are horrendous, so if you are planning on a quiet romantic dinner for 2, forget about it. Our table mates (and everyone around us) had to shout to make conversation. The bone marrow was to die for, the mushroom tartine was very good and loaded with mushrooms. Then we opted for the $75 (showed up as $80 on our bill) rib eye for 4 of us to share...flavor was good but there was a large piece of gristle making most of my portion inedible. Excellent wine at a decent price. Service was impeccable. I might try to go again but the noise level and having to shout over dinner isn't so great for digestion and will have to think hard about returning. I would try the hangar steak if I return, have heard from others that it's excellent."

  • "I wanted to like Red Cow. I live nearby and love French food. Sadly, it was not to be. This is the third restaurant iteration in this space and it is LOUD. So loud we couldn't hear each other. I wish there were a way to put in a drop ceiling, hang something on the walls (I know, it would ruin the lean aesthetic), but it is painfully loud. Then the food: our salad was overdressed, drippy (we got the salad with the egg). Flavors were great but it was sitting in soggy dressing. I was excited about my scallops and French lentils, which I love. The dish was SO SALTY. Yes,ham hock was in there, but seriously. I can't remember the last time my food was that salty. My husband's pork, also salty. Lots of great reviews. But for us, not so much."

  • "Jessica a good server, friendly and on the ball, Asian host was friendly & welcoming, rest of the service staff were robots, tall dark-haired guy who brought our wine to the table didn't even say hello or make eye contact, red-haired young server looked like she had eaten something unpleasant. short ribs were ok - we make much better at home -- hangar steak not tender, great gem lettuce salad, good wine list. Noise level a din, place desperately needs sound attenuation panels. We live 2 blocks away so will give it another shot, but not soon."
