  • Ethan Stowell never disappoints

I've yet to had a bad dining experience at an Ethan Stowell restaurant (except during restaurant week, but that shouldn't count), and Red Cow was no exception. Great food, good service. The salads we ate were delicious, and the hangar steak was perfectly cooked as well. I thought the gnocchi could have been a bit more tender, but that might be preference. The server was very helpful and engaging. My only complaint (though this is true of most resturants) is that we were seated close to the door on a very cold night, and it we had a blast of cold every few minutes. (Restaurant designers need to prioritize vestibules!)

I was left disappointed in my trip to red cow. All the dishes seemed to be missing one element or another. Beef tartar had no egg for the creamy, rich factor, beet salad looked thrown together with no attention to detail and needed seasoning, frisée salad was needing just a few more seconds on the egg, branzini needed a sauce and less char and the arugula needed attention. The highlight were the oysters. Service was ok, however no notice of disinterest on uneaten dishes, drinks were slow to come to the table as well as be refilled. Unfortunately, Red Cow didn't leave a positive impression.

Very charmimg. We had charcuterie selection to start which didn't "wow" me and I had the 8 oz filet and fries, which wasn't as flavorful as I expected. But it was an enjoyable dinner and great atmosphere. For sure a place to try but I wouldn't go back after experiencing it. Definitely would recommend anyone to try, especially small group of friends.

  • Great steak frites

    Dined on 11/6/2014
We started with a half dozen oysters, which were ok but not great. The steak frites was excellent; my brother and I both had the 10 oz. coulotte. They were cooked perfectly and the seasoning was just right. Sauces (especially the béarnaise) were good. We shared a chocolate mousse for dessert, one of the best I've had (and I will generally opt for mousse when it's available so I've had my share). Only downside was the noise level: the music was blaring too loudly which was a distraction.

We had a lovely dinner at Red Cow, but it was absurdly loud. I'm sure the amped up volume of one large party in the midst of a celebration didn't help, but the music continued to make things WAY worse. Honestly, I don't know of anyone who avoids a restaurant because it's too quiet, and yet most of the small places around here are incredibly noisy. I am struck by the utter uselessness of the "noise level" rating above. The only way one can indicate that a restaurant has an absurdly high level of ambient noise is by checking "energetic." Are you kidding me? How about "Boeing 747 Taking Off?"

Our food was wonderful, especially the charcuterie plate. I tried the roasted 1/2 chicken (small bird!) instead of steak this time, and enjoyed that. My dining mate ordered the gnocchi, which he found unremarkable. The restaurant was crowded and tables are closely packed, which is ok. But between the conversational noise (this has always been a noisy location) and the staff's attempt to play some music over it, it was far too noisy for my tastes. This will enter into consideration for future visits (it was that bad).

We live in the neighborhood, and have watched several restaurants rotate through this space. We have liked every one, including Cremant, June and especially, Restaurant Bea. But Red Cow has the feeling of a hot place that will last, for many reasons: fun ambiance; warm, professional service; interesting wine list; and creative but simple food. We're so happy Ethan Stowell finally came to our neighborhood!

While the Red Cow definitely has amazing steaks, we were pleasantly surprised by how great the seafood is as well. We began with an order of 6 oysters. They were beautiful! And so delicious that we ended up ordering 6 more. The beet salad was fresh and delicious. The mussels were amazing, perfectly cooked and sweet. Now let's talk about that steak. We got the 12 oz rib eye and split it. Sooooo good! The frites...sooo good...steak sauces (herbed butter and red wine) solo good! Cocktails (Black Manhattan and French Connection) were a perfect beginning. And the dessert and wine, all of it was just great. Our service was amazing and the ambiance was really fun. I had NOTHING to complain about.

This is the real thing. Hamburger on a wonderful toasted brioche bun, fresh fresh tomato slice, grilled onions, cheddar cheese...and then there's the pommes frites with aioli. We sat at the bar when our table wasn't ready -- and decided that sitting at the bar is the perfect spot. Bartender was a great mixologist and a skilled waiter besides. The only negative about Red Cow (that was also true of the predecessors in that location -- Cremante and Bea) is the acoustics are a challenge. The concrete walls and floor do not absorb any sound so as wonderful as Red Cow is, it's not the place for a quiet romantic evening.

The place was packed yet we were seated on-time for our reservation. Service was good (not exceptional), about what you'd expect for a Seattle foodie-cost place. The appetizers were solid foodie quality and surprisingly large. The heart of the issue is their steak - very expensive (same or more than Daniel's et al). You can't judge a steak place on one night. My two companions like their steaks (made French style, not the typical 1500 degree grill); I thought they were "ok" (especially for the price) - tougher than I would have expected. The recommended salmon as our third entrée was not good - undercooked (and we like fish rare) and tasteless (no salt, no butter, no anything including natural taste). If you go, go for the steaks.

We went there for the burger week. The fries were as great as usual - they stayed crispy even after I finished the burger! The burger buns were amazingly sturdy - they didn't become soggy after absorbing the juice from the beef patty. The beef patty was juicy and flavorful - medium-rare was a good call. My only complaint is on the height of the burger - it was a big challenge if I wanted to taste every layer in one bite. Overall it was very good!

Went to Red Cow with my girlfriend, had reservations and were seated right away. The server was helpful and available even though he had many tables and the appetizers we had, 3 choices from the charcuterie, ranged from quite good (fois gras) to excellent (pate) to possibly the best we've had (chicken liver mousse). We both ordered ribeye steak frites & ratatouille to share. Fries were very good, veggies excellent, cooked just right. Our steaks, however, were definitely lacking flavor, even with the bernaise and compound butter we ordered with them. Our steaks looked beautiful, cooked to temp (Med. Rare). Just missing the really rich beefy flavor you expect from a $42 ribeye - if I was blindfolded I would have said it was a leaner cut.

Red Cow is unabashedly devoted to steak frites (with a choice of both steaks and sauces) but has a variety of other French-brasserie choices as well. Service is impeccable and friendly. When the small room is full, it is quite noisy, to the extent that one's server has to lean over the table to be heard (this seems to be part of Mr. Stowell's preferred style). I had the hanger steak, medium, with red-wine reduction; both the beef and the fries were superbly prepared, although the meat was a little tougher than it might have been. I started with a special heirloom-tomato gazpacho; it was wonderful. There is a full bar with well-prepared traditional and avant-garde cocktails (I had an Aviation). All in all, quite a fine place.

This was our first visit to Red Cow and we took out of town guests, one of whom is quite particular. Everyone enjoyed their meal very much. Service was very good. Decor is modern; there are mostly hard surfaces so once the dinner hour was in full swing it was quite noisy and it's a bit stuffy inside. Our steaks were perfectly prepared; two of us had the melt-in-your-mouth filets, and one couple shared the boneless rib-eye, which was plenty of food since we started with the chacuterrie and lamb tongue salad. We brought our own wine -- the $25 corkage fee is a little high but the wine glasses were good quality, so made the wine drinking more pleasurable! For dessert we shared the peach sorbet - 3 big luscious scoops!

My husband and I went to Red Cow for my birthday dinner, and it was just outstandingly good. We started with the house made charcuterie (we went with chicken liver mouse, foie gras, and pork rilletes), and were amazed at how delicate and flavorful they all were. The mousse and foie just melted in your mouth. We followed that up with steaks. I went with the eye of ribeye, and I'm glad I did- it was just perfectly cooked. The marbling made the cut so flavorful and so tender, I think it might be the best steak I've ever had. To top it off, the server was attentive and helpful, and the atmosphere was friendly, welcoming, and just the right amount of hip. Dinner at Red Cow was just the perfect way to spend a summer evening.

Service was attentive, but not obsequious. The gazpacho was less gazpacho than a delectable, complex, cold cucumber cream (creme fraiche?) soup, wonderfully seasoned, with half cherry tomatoes afloat. The half chicken and pork tenderloin were otw, beautifully sauced and presented. My birthday guest loved the chocolate mousse, although I was not enthralled with my taste of it. The fig tart with creme fraiche ice was utter perfection. Hated my red wine choice (first on red wine-by-the-glass list). Very bitter. I look forward to returning soon for another lovely dinner out, but I'll be more careful in my wine selection.

We split 3 of the charcuterie and they were fantastic. The frisee and bacon salad was great too. I had the 16oz boneless ribeye and unfortunately that left much to be desired, especially for a steak frites restaurant. It wasn't a bad steak but it lacked flavor. The char on the outside was weak and it needed more salt. It wasn't dry but it also wasn't nearly as juicy as you'd expect a $38 ribeye to be. I would definitely go back for the charcuterie and appetizers.

The first thing that indicated to me that this restaurant might have been trying to hard was that you needed to be bilingual French-English to understand the menu. Fortunately, a few in our party were so we could translate the parts of the menu that weren't in English. Things like "haricots verts" (a.k.a. green beans) seems a little unnecessary to be in French. The food was decent. The base quality was good and the preparation was also well done but in several dishes they were heavy handed with the spices. The bearnaise sauce and terrine where overwhelmingly seasoned. You definitely needed to have something strong to drink to wash it down. They didn't have much beer but they did have a local favorite, Rachel's Ginger Beer, and wine.

Red Cow was to be my "meat relapse" as my dining partner put it, after 2mo of no meat. Martinis, great. Charcuterie amazing:pork rilletes, foie gras & pate de champagne, wow! Next, bone marrow also delicious, however to me needed a little parsley salad & some salt. She had the hanger MR, it was juicy and perfectly cooked, very tasty, tarragon-y béarnaise, although a little thin. My ribeye MR, was not as good. The lip was fatty and tasty, but the center of the steak was very overcooked and really tough, nowhere near MR. I was told it was sous vide and then pan seared..only on one side? Truly disappointing. They took it off my bill. I will try again, as overall we really enjoyed ourselves. Call it Red Cow...give me red cow. Attentive service.

From the moment we first walked in the door, every single employee was courteous and accommodating right through the end of the meal. The restaurant is very nicely done, but we opted to sit on their patio because it was cooler. We ordered the burger (one of the best I've ever had) and the steak sirloin frites, and finished off with homemade peach sorbet - it was all fabulous, which was evident by our clean plates. The food was excellent, but the service is what I'll be returning for.

This cozy restaurant was ultra accomodating and the service was excellent. Our party of four did include one guest whom does not consume red meat who was quiet happy with the halibut. The steaks were very nice and the charcuterie was fantastic. The smoked beef tongue was a hit as well. I would certainly recommend this place.
