A word from Red Cat
This Old Chelsea food hall is a New York original. The Red Cat's combination of come-as-you-are sensibilities and straightforward, satisfying, and occasionally irreverent cuisine instantly establish the restaurant as a favorite with New York diners. Andy Xu runs the kitchen that's become famous for such whimsical creations as Reuben Wontons with Red Cabbage Slaw and Pan Roasted Cod with Flageolets, Moroccan Olives, Oranges and Basil Oil. Such dishes only add to the restaurant's mystique as a place for all seasons, styles and spirits. As Frank Bruni wrote in the New York Times "The Red Cat feels vaguely colonial and tavern like, except when it feels downtown-gallery cool, and apart from those moments when it feels modestly and eclectically elegant."

Each dish appears basic on the menu, but is prepared with an exquisite touch that makes you confident you could never prepare it as well at home. We had to ask for bread and it came one slice at a time; there was no bread basket to order on the menu either. The smoked salmon platter I ordered was meager. Although the service is courteous and the atmosphere is nice, I would recommend maybe dinner more than brunch."

  • "This is our go to place. The food is always spot on. I've never had anything there that was not wonderful. Nothing ever disappoints. The savory bread pudding was mouth watering. The beet salad, just perfect. Both fish dinners were lovely. The drinks are so well made. I love the staff there. They have it all figured out. Friendly and professional. Rene the bartender was a sweetheart. I hate raving about a place because it creates more competition for a table. Make a reservation. It fills up fast."

  • "We ate dinner here about five months ago. That meal and experience was very satisfying. Our most recent dinner was just a little of the mark. In NYC everyone wants the best, and most sadly settle. You don't needto settlehere, as Here the wait staff will dote on you if you ask, or leave you alone if you want. The food is nicely presented and served hot and nicely plated. Bar drinks were well made and portions were large. We came on a very busy Friday night, and to the restaurants praise, we were not rushed or pushed to leave, and spent the hours there. We will be back."

  • "The Red Cat is over favorite restaurant in NYC. The food is excellent with just the right size servings. It is great because all of us, including one member of the group with dietary restrictions had great choices. The staff was very attentive to the dietary restrictions and the chef made all the adjustments without any complaints from anyone. The food is superb with unusual combinations with fish. Great combination of veggies with spices. Great bar with special cocktails...and friendly! Ambience is excellent....energetic but not too noisy Love the crowd which is very diverse.... Good prices as well for such great good and excellent service"

The service was less than I would expect from Red Cat. This was in spite of the fact that the restaurant was not exceedingly busy. There are many fine restaurants in the neighborhood and Red Cat has lost the edge."

  • "I am a regular diner at The Red Cat. I have been for many years. I recently met a friend there for dinner and found the experience wanting. I ordered a Manhattan from the bar and it was watery. We were seated at a table in the back that was so bright we had to ask the waiter to dim the light. We both ordered the special entrée. This was the low point of the evening. The entree was a half a chicken, deboned on a bed of carrot puree. The chicken was tasteless as if it had been boiled and thrown on the plate. As I have known The Red Cat to be historically consistent, I will return. But I offer this feedback as a way to correct these failures so diners can continue to enjoy the experience The Red Cat has offered over the years."

  • "I went with 2 dear friends and we couldn't decide on entrees so we ordered many appetizers and side dishes and shared. We got no complaints from our server (we ordered A LOT), who was wonderful throughout, and we sat and chatted and had a ball. For my taste, the entrees that looked enticing (like skate) seemed to have an ingredient that, for me, was unappealing or excessively heavy (e.g., pastrami stuffed skate or mussels with salmon). The appetizers and side dishes are OUTSTANDING, particularly the beet salad, polenta and brussel sprouts. Leave room for the lemon tart and/or banana bread ice cream sandwich!! The only reason I gave service 4 starts was because our busser reached in to grab dishes too soon twice. Otherwise, FAB service."

And the noise level was very moderate given the number of tables in the dining room. A great place for a romantic dinner or for enjoying dinner in an atmosphere where you don't have to shout to be heard by your tablemates."

  • "We went for brunch and it was totally disappointing. Nothing on the menu really stood out (we did try to fried string beans, they were good). I got the eggs with wilted greens and corn beef hash - when I asked for something other than corn beef, the waitress told me she might be able to put extra greens on my plate. So my dish was two fried eggs and half cooked spinach. It didn't even come with toast. Pretty disappointing."

I asked the waiter to please plate my food so that the roasted chicken was not sitting atop the starch and veggies, which, while this type of presentation is au courant, is pretentious and ruins the food, in my opinion. The waiter said that there could be no special requests of "Chef" because "Chef" wants the diner to experience his food his way, especially for Restaurant Week, because he wants you to come back again. Give me a break. The spaetzle that accompanied the chicken, insofar as I could find them, were unedible. The chicken was good. Bottom line; much too many restaurants in NYC to ever go back there again."

The space is cozy in an older-school kind of way. If you have a choice, I would request a table in the front of the restaurant. We sat in the back and it felt a bit cavernous and stale."

  • "I hate writing this review... I've dined at Red Cat many times over the years and have always enjoyed it, but my visit there Sunday evening will be my last meal in the dining room. Of the courses I had that evening, the appetizer was excellent, the entree a total disaster and dessert was also pretty bad. The saving grace was a stellar martini and Red Cat's excellent Green Beans Tempura. Our server however, was friendly and attentive. Please note, this review isn't being written based on this one experience. The food has been slipping for a while now. On Sunday, it finally hit bottom for me. Going forward, I'm relegating myself to the bar for a Martini & the Green Beans Tempura. In a place with this much potential, that's a damn shame..."

  • "My group of diners really loved Red Cat. The Restaurant Week menu was excellent. Some of my group ordered lots of appetizers from the regular menu and they were really excellent. I had the pork on the special menu which was so delicious-tender and tasty. Our server was excellent as well. He was attentive, personable and had a great sense of humor. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly and we were very comfortable. We will definitely return."

  • "I've heard great reviews about Red Cat months ago and thought I'd bring my brother here for his 23rd birthday. Upon arriving, we were greeted with a very friendly staff that seated us immediately. Between the three of us, we ordered 2 apps.. Steak Tartare and Chicken Liver Terrine... both equally delicious! My husband order the Grill Pork Chop, which was good only if you scraped off the charred layers. My brother and I ordered the Roasted Duck Breast, which was the favorite of the night! We shared two desserts, the Pistachio Semifreddo and Chocolate Creme Brulee.. the Pistachio Semifreddo was AMAZING! Overall, it was a great experience and worth coming back sometime in the future!"

  • "Sorry RedCat. I loved you before you got a new chef. Our meals were bland. Well cooked meats but bland and uninspired. we've been to this place once before, LOVED it and were excited to come back for restaurant week. Our meals were just not good. (pork and trout - the chocolate dessert tasted like it came from a supermarket shelf) We asked the waitress if there was a new chef. she said yes, she also told us he was using the Restaurant Week menu provided by the previous chef. If you can't cook it DON'T serve it! I'd love to know if he cooks his OWN flavor combinations better, but I'm not going back to find out. If you can't get the Restaurant Week menu to make customers DROOLING to return, I doubt the rest of the menu is all that good......."

Then a generous serving of pork sausages with a tasty salad with gigantes and dates, etc. Dessert Chocolate pannacotta..ortheoneI went with a banana bread ice cream sandwich. Great taste and value! Going back for the regular menu..fries look good!"
