A word from Red Cat
This Old Chelsea food hall is a New York original. The Red Cat's combination of come-as-you-are sensibilities and straightforward, satisfying, and occasionally irreverent cuisine instantly establish the restaurant as a favorite with New York diners. Andy Xu runs the kitchen that's become famous for such whimsical creations as Reuben Wontons with Red Cabbage Slaw and Pan Roasted Cod with Flageolets, Moroccan Olives, Oranges and Basil Oil. Such dishes only add to the restaurant's mystique as a place for all seasons, styles and spirits. As Frank Bruni wrote in the New York Times "The Red Cat feels vaguely colonial and tavern like, except when it feels downtown-gallery cool, and apart from those moments when it feels modestly and eclectically elegant."

Diner Reviews
  • "Good to find a place with creative but excellent food combinations, not heavy and blend well together. Excellent friendly service and none of the typical American pushiness. Only downside is the noise level but that seems typical in any place in NYC"

  • "Not that Red Cat isn't also a great destination spot. Always reliable, excellent food and very hospitable staff. Can't say enough good things about this place.)"

  • "Their restaurant week menu was excellent and gave a good intro to the rest of their menu. For that reason I would go back. Our goal was to spend time on the High line and visit galleries and the restaurant is perfectly situated. The service was wonderful and didn't discriminate against us even tho we were there for the special restaurant week menu."

  • "Four of us dined at the Red Cat on Monday evening. We were seated promptly at our reservation time. The food couldn't have been better, fresher or more creative in terms of side dishes. The bordeaux wine we ordered was wonderful, reasonably priced, and went perfectly with the food. We had several fruit-based desserts--all were outstanding, with everyone wanting to taste each dessert. Red Cat has two specialty coffees, but even the basic house coffee was rich and strong. The service was friendly and professional, the wine poured out unobtrusively when glasses had emptied. How many times can you say this--a joy from beginning to end!"

  • "Booked The Red Cat after seeing it on Barefoot Contessa and are we glad that we did. Wonderful and different food plus the service couldn't be beat. Don't miss the La Fontina baked cheese - it is only on the bar menu but you can order it when seated in the dining room."

  • "Maybe the best service I've had in NYC. The food was great and all, but the service shined. Our waitress saw my girlfriend struggling to cut her ice cream sandwich, insisted on bringing us another dessert and wouldn't accept no for an answer. The semifreddo was somehow better than the panna cotta and the ice cream sandwich we had ordered. And this was after an amazing appetizer of corn soup and our entrees of pork tacos and bluefish. Super impressed with everything about this restaurant. I live just 14 blocks north, and I guarantee I will be back."

  • "Really like this place on repeated visits. Came for lunch. Food delivery was down to a crawl. Headed for a two hour plus lunch when we asked what was wrong. Told 1st day of restaurant week was a problem. But it wasn't that busy, what is to work out? When server went to check we were told entrees were on warming table. Gee, we wanted to hear that. Little things like soup course with no spoon is just sloppy. Food was good, saving grace."

  • "Walked the Highline and went around Chelsea Piers for the day. Made reservation at Red Cat for 5pm, which is when they open. Nice place. They let us in a bit early and we sat at the bar for drinks. Creative cocktail menu and friendly staff. Dinner entrees change often. Very creative dishes and delicious. I had a pork chop, my son had grilled chicken and my wife had tile fish. All were tasty. Chicken was best my son ever had. Tile fish was tasty but it was in a risotto that was a bit too creamy. That was the only complaint. Will go back."

  • "Came a little early and sat at the bar. Was greeted by a friendly female bartender who insisted I try the wine I ordered before I buy. How nice! We were seated (4 of us) on time. Small but great menu; had the salmon and it was delicious. Atmosphere was perfect."

  • "I went to this restaurant thinking I was going to discover a gem of a place in the ever changing Chelsea. I was disappointed. The place is good but has no charm whatsoever and the food is just fair."

  • "great food/atmosphere/service - reasonable prices - that is a rare combination"

  • "Know it is a popular neighborhood staple but it seems a bit old and stale. Servvice very friendly though the bus boy was straight up surly. Food fine but hardly exceptional. Music from the bar was str annoyingly loud. And bad."

  • "Local friends told me about Red Cat when I asked them for a good date spot. The food was great, the service spot on (extremely fast, actually) and the setting was beautiful. Nothing adds class like a white table cloth and properly dressed, well spoken waiters."

  • "took clients out for lunch, the service was attentive, place was relatively quiet, not too busy, and the food got all the basics right. it was outstanding, and the well-written menu gave slightly higher expectations than what was delivered. nice wine list and the biggest shaving of parmesan ever!"

  • "The Red Cat was recommended to us and it didn't disappoint. The food was delicious and the service accommodating. Our son has food allergies and it was one of the best meals he's had on our vacation. The server was very careful to ensure his meal was safe. Definitely a place we will remember if we stay in the city again."

  • "This was my second time to the The Red Cat. The food and service were as good as I remembered. Wait staff are courteous and knowledgeable. Lobster Crudo appetizer was terrific. The pork chop with Orzo and shell steak entrees were wonderful. We will return."

  • "Our experience at the Red Cat was exceptional! Our waiter was great, he knew the menu in detail and was very helpful with our dinner selection. The food was outstanding. The menu was well thought out and offered an interesting twist on more traditional fare. I ordered the lamb and my husband had the steak, both of which I highly recommend. The green bean tempura is also not to be missed. The very best, however, was the cocktail menu. I will remember their Ginger Daiquiri for a long time to come. I recommend that you skip the wine and stay with the cocktails. Not that the wine selection is lacking, but you wouldn't want to miss the very inventive mixed drinks. The staff really cares about this establishment - and it shows."

  • "The service here was excellent, the food delicious, and the ambiance is like the country farmhouse of people who love visiting Morocco. Very cool, in other words. But what really stood out for me was the special menu of seasonal foods. I love super-seasonal vegetables and ordered the pea ravioli in brown butter sauce, which was just as good as it sounds. It is pricey, but it you're looking for something extra-special that's not sushi or steak (although they did have a steak on the menu), then this place is a great idea."

  • "high quality food has always been a given here. charming and friendly. unusual and interesting menu. only regret is that prices are 10-20% higher than seems perfect. delightful to sit at bar and consume several small plates."

  • "The Red Cat continues to maintain its staying power and draws a good crowd. The non-alcoholic rhubarb hibiscus lemonade was just what the doctor ordered--both sweet and tart. The Dirty Burger (with fried egg) was decadent; though not sure why it came with chips instead of herbed french fries which had to be ordered a la carte. Service was attentive and the noise level allowed for conversation without having to shout at one another."

  • "One expects good food and presentation, but it's rare to find an entire staff cordial, personable, professional and intuitively talented and unobtrusively attentive. The Red Cat staff is the finest I've encountered in NYC. A delightful, memorable evening."

  • "I have been going here for years, since it opened and it is always a delicious treat! The food is perfection and the portions are very substantial and sooo so good. It is a neighborhood oasis! Thank you for staying consistent and keeping it fresh!!"

  • "I've dined at Red Cat a handful of times, always for a birthday or other special occasion, and the restaurant is a welcome reprieve from trendy NYC hot spots. This is classic, delicious American dishes prepared to highlight fresh ingredients and flavors. The main dishes might be overpriced given their simplicity, but the ambiance is welcoming, warm, and well-worth the price. (Dishes to try: Lobster Crudo, Tempura Green Beans)"

  • "Happy to find such a pretty place in an area a little light on restaurants but the food was skimpy & just so-so. Soft butter lettuce salad was mostly a salty mound of lettuce. I couldn't taste any lemon or olive oil and the fennel & cheese were almost nonexistent. Two shrimp tacos had a few decent sized very flavorful shrimp but they were wrapped in cold flour tortillas stuffed with undressed, shredded napa cabbage and little else that I can remember. Salsa was really good but came in a tiny ramekin making it hard to get out to put on the tacos. Service was ok but it took a long time for the credit card to be processed once the check arrived. The waitress did seem to have too many tables to handle. Felt like the "C Team" had the kitchen."

  • "We wanted a nice, but not over the top, place to have a dinner and fount it in Red Cat. The half bottles of wine were great and the food was wonderful. The summer squash side was a big hit! We were seated at a table near the bar with a lively crowd out for a fun night it had a feeling of a small Parisian neighborhood joint."

  • "Happy to have gotten an early reservation for dinner. One of my favs and always on my list of "go to" places. The summer specials were just sensational especially the asparagus salad. Its worth altering your dinning time in order to get a reservation. Its really THAT GOOD!"

  • "After spending a beautiful Sunday afternoon walking the High Line, my wife and I strolled over to Red Cat for an early dinner. We had driven into the city for the day and were lucky enough to find a parking spot on 23rd St close to the High Line. At that point we didn't know where dinner was going to be, but as we walked past Red Cat we remembered how much we enjoyed our first visit there and decided to try it again. As with our first experience, everything was perfect. The staff was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The menu was a foodies delight. On Sundays they offer a beef taco dish that we shared as an appetizer...so delicious. From beginning to end it was a wonderful experience. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone."

  • "Having moved out of New York to the country a few years ago and meeting out-of-town friends for dinner in Manhattan, we thought we'd try an "old reliable," the Red Cat. We weren't disappointed: the food and service were as good as ever and our friends said it was the highlight of their visit to New York. It was a great, relaxing end to a hectic, touristy day. Makes us want to move back."

  • "Red Cat is practically an institution as NYC restaurants go. Now well into its 15th year as a Chelsea anchor, it's not as hot as it once was. The good news is, it is also easier to grab a table for brunch or dinner at a place that dishes out delicious, inspired and unpretentious food that, like the galleries that surround it, is a work of art in and of itself. "

  • "Always a good family choice for comfort food. The hamburgers and fries are good choices. The deep fried zucchini and the green bean tempura are yummy. They must learn to reduce the salt they use."
