A word from Red Cat
This Old Chelsea food hall is a New York original. The Red Cat's combination of come-as-you-are sensibilities and straightforward, satisfying, and occasionally irreverent cuisine instantly establish the restaurant as a favorite with New York diners. Andy Xu runs the kitchen that's become famous for such whimsical creations as Reuben Wontons with Red Cabbage Slaw and Pan Roasted Cod with Flageolets, Moroccan Olives, Oranges and Basil Oil. Such dishes only add to the restaurant's mystique as a place for all seasons, styles and spirits. As Frank Bruni wrote in the New York Times "The Red Cat feels vaguely colonial and tavern like, except when it feels downtown-gallery cool, and apart from those moments when it feels modestly and eclectically elegant."

We were seated at a table near the bar with a lively crowd out for a fun night it had a feeling of a small Parisian neighborhood joint."

  • "Our experience at the Red Cat was exceptional! Our waiter was great, he knew the menu in detail and was very helpful with our dinner selection. The food was outstanding. The menu was well thought out and offered an interesting twist on more traditional fare. I ordered the lamb and my husband had the steak, both of which I highly recommend. The green bean tempura is also not to be missed. The very best, however, was the cocktail menu. I will remember their Ginger Daiquiri for a long time to come. I recommend that you skip the wine and stay with the cocktails. Not that the wine selection is lacking, but you wouldn't want to miss the very inventive mixed drinks. The staff really cares about this establishment - and it shows."

  • "The service here was excellent, the food delicious, and the ambiance is like the country farmhouse of people who love visiting Morocco. Very cool, in other words. But what really stood out for me was the special menu of seasonal foods. I love super-seasonal vegetables and ordered the pea ravioli in brown butter sauce, which was just as good as it sounds. It is pricey, but it you're looking for something extra-special that's not sushi or steak (although they did have a steak on the menu), then this place is a great idea."

  • "The Red Cat continues to maintain its staying power and draws a good crowd. The non-alcoholic rhubarb hibiscus lemonade was just what the doctor ordered--both sweet and tart. The Dirty Burger (with fried egg) was decadent; though not sure why it came with chips instead of herbed french fries which had to be ordered a la carte. Service was attentive and the noise level allowed for conversation without having to shout at one another."

This is classic, delicious American dishes prepared to highlight fresh ingredients and flavors. The main dishes might be overpriced given their simplicity, but the ambiance is welcoming, warm, and well-worth the price. (Dishes to try: Lobster Crudo, Tempura Green Beans)"

  • "Happy to find such a pretty place in an area a little light on restaurants but the food was skimpy & just so-so. Soft butter lettuce salad was mostly a salty mound of lettuce. I couldn't taste any lemon or olive oil and the fennel & cheese were almost nonexistent. Two shrimp tacos had a few decent sized very flavorful shrimp but they were wrapped in cold flour tortillas stuffed with undressed, shredded napa cabbage and little else that I can remember. Salsa was really good but came in a tiny ramekin making it hard to get out to put on the tacos. Service was ok but it took a long time for the credit card to be processed once the check arrived. The waitress did seem to have too many tables to handle. Felt like the "C Team" had the kitchen."

  • "After spending a beautiful Sunday afternoon walking the High Line, my wife and I strolled over to Red Cat for an early dinner. We had driven into the city for the day and were lucky enough to find a parking spot on 23rd St close to the High Line. At that point we didn't know where dinner was going to be, but as we walked past Red Cat we remembered how much we enjoyed our first visit there and decided to try it again. As with our first experience, everything was perfect. The staff was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The menu was a foodies delight. On Sundays they offer a beef taco dish that we shared as an appetizer...so delicious. From beginning to end it was a wonderful experience. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone."

  • "ALWAYS Excellent! Red Cat is my favorite restaurant on the West Side! Staff and servers are ALWAYS gracious and professional! The several waitstaff members we have had, have ALWAYS been knowledgeable and helpful! They ALWAYS know their extensive and varying menu very well and are great at suggestions!--I ALWAYS listen! Love the fact that they serve Tito's Vodka! We have brought many friends to The Red Cat, and they have all returned on their own. I don't usually eat dessert, but ALWAYS have it here! Last Thursday, the Cavatelle (sp?), fava bean, and rabbit appetizer was spectacular!!-as were the calves liver, and the pork dish! Go! You will love it! "

The good news is, it is also easier to grab a table for brunch or dinner at a place that dishes out delicious, inspired and unpretentious food that, like the galleries that surround it, is a work of art in and of itself.   • "had read some good things about red cat, so we decided to try it before chelsea gallery hopping. unfortunately, the best thing about it was its location. the food was fair to middling, with one actually bad dish. best thing was the tempura green beans we all shared. light and crispy and delicious. i had a rabbit/fava pasta that was tasty, but pretty standard. my husband's grilled chicken salad was just sad. On a bed of limp iceberg with a few peas thrown on it, and a bland chicken breast that could have been cooked any time in the last few days sliced on top. No presentation or flavor. cocktails were nothing special, and we didn't order a second round, which we normally do at brunch! service was very good, though."

  • "Met some friends who were from out of town. Arrived at 11:45 am for brunch on a Saturday. The table was small, which worked in our favor for great conversation, restaurant got noisier as the meal went on, but compared to most places, it wasn't bad. Our bloody mary's were very good, and we ordered toasted bread to scoop up baked Fontina that came in a crock. It was delicious, and great for sharing. My husband had the Huevos Rancheros which he said was the best he ever had. I had an omelette which was good, nothing too special. Coffee was strong and good."

  • "I have hitherto been a great fan of the Red Cat and a repeat diner. My last experience at lunch was a disappointment. A chicken salad for one of my party was perfunctory and what was given in the menu as a Roast Beef Sandwich turn out to be a flavorless, slightly tough steak sandwich. The pasta passed muster with my guest. The wine list is good and partially saved the day as did the efficient service of PHILIP D. The staff is always courteous but management needs to buck up the kitchen a bit."

  • "Took my mom here for Mother's Day this past weekend and we had a really great time. Started with the filet mignon tartare and zucchini/pecorino apps, both of which were delicious (both independently and combined!); Mom enjoyed the crispy skin salmon and I loved the hake. Cocktails were expertly made, service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing and the ambiance was lovely. Worth the price, and we'll definitely be back. Meow!"
