The original Reata Restaurant located in the scenic Davis Mountains of west Texas offers the same fine dining and Legendary Texas Cuisine you can find at the Fort Worth location. Alpine, home to Sul Ross State University is near Texas tourist destination Big Bend National Park and the towns of Marathon, Fort Davis and Lajitas. Alpine is also a short drive from Marfa, Texas renowned both for the mysterious Marfa Lights and Donald Judd's Chinati Foundation.

Reata, named after the legendary ranch in the James Dean classic movie, "Giant", which was filmed in nearby Marfa, boasts the same high quality Southwestern dining you can find in Fort Worth. This is not food for the faint of heart, from Chicken Fried Steak to Calf Fries or the Pepper Crusted Tenderloin and Cowboy Rib Eye Steak, this is a dining experience not to miss.

  • "Our server did a great job. Too bad that the initial experience with the hostess was terrible. She was unfriendly, unhelpful and rude. I truly think that took away from the rest of the experience. The food was good and our server was very nice."

  • "For a starter we split the quail. It was a perfect combo of crispy outside and juicy meat. The grits and BBQ molasses glaze complimented it in just the right way! The rib eye and carne asada were both delicious. You could cut both with a fork. The asada was unique- a full flank steak with enchiladas and asada sauce on top. I'd never seen it served like that before, but it was incredible. The CF ranch wine was great, and dessert was delicious! Had the bread pudding tamale and pecan pie, which were worth stuffing yourself for!"

  • "Drove down to Alpine from Midland just to take my son to eat at the Reata!"

  • "Reata Alpine delivered! Great service, excellent food. We had the garlic sirloin and the citrus crusted chicken. Both were outstanding. The part I liked the best was the jalepeno grits. I could have made a meal on those alone. Highly recommend."

  • "Food was outstanding. Have never tasted better jalapeno cheese grits!"

  • "I had made a reservation for one, but ended up bringing two friends with me for an early evening reservation. Despite being very busy, they kindly accommodated us (due to another cancellation). Hostess was very friendly and attentive and the food was great. I would definitely go back there."

  • "Very nice old and big home converted into a VERY good restaurant. No parking problems, great bar and big menu. My chicken fried pork chops were outstanding. Next time I'm in Alpine I will be dining here again."

  • "Reata was very disappointing. During our 4 day stay at Alpine we had planned to go there at least 3 nights. However, we changed our minds after our first dinner. My rib eye Steak was overcooked (was supposed to be med rare...emphasis on rare as per my request)...came out well done. My girlfriends tenderloin was cooked well (med rare emphasis on rare) but it was totally dry. The vegetables that were supposed to come with steaks were substituted with out letting us know ahead. I did not mention my disappointment over my meal, but my GF did and we got the manager to charge for only the wine bottle we ordered. However, our intention was not to get a free meal, and insisted on paying for the entire meal. Mgr. comp the wine. Bad experience."

  • "Dined here in Alpine for 19th anniversary. The service and atmosphere were very good. The dining area is overall a little on the small side and the only negative is that if you are in the front dining room it is difficult not to notice patrons coming in, going out the front door. Regardless, this is a very rustic, ranch, cowboy feel experience with outstanding service and food! I had the rib eye, it was perfection, the butter on the steak added tremendous flavor. Highly recommend the steak! My wife had fish and enjoyed it very much. The waitress was a student at Sul Ross really into equine. She was very personable, patient and professional. Highly recommend Reata!"

  • "Huge portions of bland, tasteless sides. Fried foods seems like their thing. Onion rings were great other very disappointing especially for high prices."

  • "Portions to big for us as Europians !! Quality perfect !!"

  • "I wonder if this is the best Alpine has to offer. The food was average. The steak had a great flavor but was overdone, the salad was gritty (dirty lettuce?), the jalapeño grits were fantastic and the quail appetizer was seasoned and cooked perfectly. The margaritas were fairly large but were weak and didn't have enough ice so they were warm. We had to scoop ice out of the water glasses. The server was completely indifferent to us or our meals and beverages. Other than the steak, I think the prices were very reasonable. I doubt I'll go back again though. "

  • "We stopped in for lunch on a trip to the big Bend. We ate on the patio where it was very pleasant for late May. The tenderloin tacos were outstanding. We returned a few days later and had the appetizer sampler. The tamale, bacon-wrapped shrimp, and jalapeno cheese grits were our favorites."

  • "did not know what to expect in Alpine but this was indeed a "diamond in the desert". I have traveled to many foreign countries in my life and have had many great meals; this one ranks very high on my all time favorite list...superb!!"

  • "We dined at Reata on 5/23/14. We were very pleased! The service was excellent. Food selection also excellent. My appetizer of bacon wrapped shrimp was delicious! I had the salmon in cream sauce---it was perfectly prepared. My husband's food was also excellent. He had the onion rings for an appetizer and Carne Asada for the entre. The sad thing was we were too full for desert:( We will return!"

  • "We planned our trip through the Big Bend area to allow for a meal at La Reata, and we were not disappointed. The setting is unpretentious and the decor is simple (cowboy luxe), but the atmosphere and food are excellent, especially in a relatively small town. My stuffed chile poblano peppers were excellent, and the chicken-fried steak my partner had was as well - and very large to boot. He didn't care as much for the mashed potatoes, but the simple steamed brocoli (at least half a head!) was a nice accompaniment. The wine and drinks list is quite good and prices are reasonable. Don't miss this one!"

  • "On arrival the restaurant stated they did not have our reservation. Thankfully I had a copy of my confirmation. Being graduation weekend in a very small town I was relieved when the Manager stepped up and said she would honor the reservation. The food was great although service was a bit slow due to how busy they were. Would definately recommend."

  • "My husband and I had purchased the Reata cookbook a few months back while shopping in Fredericksburg, TX. We were headed down to Big Bend and decided to stay in Alpine for a night. We were so excited to find the restaurant was in the same town and could not wait to try it out! We loved how the chef had taken ranch recipes and turned them into refined foods with excellent culinary twists such as the brisket tamales with pecan mash, topped with sun dried tomato cream. Like everything in the town, it was small, but very inviting. The food was excellent, the wine selection was good, and the service was friendly, as well as knowledgeable. It was all we had hoped for!"

  • "Always make time for the Reata when in Alpine. Live in Georgia, so don't get there that often, but find the time for lunch and/or dinner any time there. Great choices on lunch and dinner menus. Never been disappointed."

  • "My husband and I have eaten at the Reata on past trips to Alpine. This time we went for lunch on Easter. Unfortunately, they just had the regular lunch menu, nothing special for Easter. The food was okay, albeit overly rich. Next time, we'll go to the Blue Bistro in FT, Davis."

  • "I love this restaurant. It's a great stop for lunch on the way to Lajitas. So different from Ft. Worth, with a just-as-big personality. The menu is fabulous. A must do."

  • "The third time to eat at the Alpine Reata Restaurant. Wife's birthday is on the 15th April each year. We drive the 350+ miles to enjoy the meal each April 15th. Excellent steak, margaritas, and ambiance. "

  • "Having read many reviews of this restaurant, we decided to try it and were not disappointed. We shared the calamari, a beautiful steak with potatoes and fresh pea pods. Every bite was perfection. The staff was friendly and warm, the waitstaff attentive. We were not rushed and enjoyed the loving dining room. Next time we will sit on the lovely outdoor patio in back. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who visits Alpine."

  • "We had a fantastic experience at Reata. We loved the food so much the first time, we came back for a second dinner during our 4 day stay in Alpine. The jalapeño grits are heavenly. The citrus chicken and salmon were so good, our young daughters ate every bite. The service was outstanding, as well. We can't wait to come back to Alpine to eat here again!"

  • "The restaurant was great. Decor was interesting and appropriate for area. Our wait person was helpful and she was friendly. The food was great starting with the calf fries. I would recommend it to anyone traveling the Big Bend area. I liked it better than Ft Worth one."

  • "This formally great spot is now veery average and overpriced. Muffins were stale. The spread(some kind of cheese I guess) was frozen solid. You could break it but you couldn't spread it. Chicken and black bean nachos very good. Fillet mignon tasteless though tender. My ribeye was fatty and not very good. Accompanied potatoes and green beans were a yawner. Reata, formally one of our favorite restaurants no longer warrants a detour to dine there."

  • "Nice spot, great service, so-so food. We ordered all of the signature dishes. Unfortunately they didn't have much flavor and were served barely warm."

  • "Wonderful, as always! Food is really good, and the folks who work there go out of their way to be truly helpful. Excellent guacamole, sinful onion rings, very good vegetable plate - and the carnivores were in heaven!"

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner. Service level was great!! I could not give more detail on the place. Our table was right in the entrance area. The chicken fried steak was excellent!! I will be returning and hoping to get to explore more of this place."

  • "Our last night in Alpine and what a great find in such a small town! We loved the cheese grits, the steaks and the wine. Can't go wrong with the basics!!"
    Dined on 1/1/2014
  • "I really want to like Reata, but it simply did not live up to my expectations. It very well could be the best restaurant in Alpine, and judging by the crowd, it seemed to be a beloved local eatery. Our criticisms on the food: The carne asada with enchiladas was good but the rice and beans were dull and tasteless. A more lively side dish - grilled vegetables? - would improve this offering. The chili rellenos were beautifully fried, but suffered from way too much cheese sauce inside. The service was a bit over-extended. The best part of the evening was that driving to Alpine for dinner from Marfa (25-minute drive) allows you to stop and experience the famous Marfa Lights on the way back."

  • "Everyone was raving about this restaurant when they found out I was visiting Alpine. Now I see why. The ambience is very warm and inviting. (There was a fireplace right next to the table, which was wonderful on a cold night!) The food was delicious and the dessert was amazing. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. We were able to relax after a day of hiking the local parks, and did not feel rushed to leave like so many chain restaurants do so they can get more customers."
