I was so hoping to impress a dear friend with a great seafood dinner for his one night in town. It turned out to be a disaster. After we were initially seated it took at least 15 minutes for water while we looked over the very limited menu. One side of the menu is totally devoted to drinks and wine and the other is for the actual food. I find that strange considering this was a place supposedly specializing in seafood. Soon after we received out bread and water a fire alarm went off and it was loud on a level I can't describe. The staff said we could stay at first but within a few minutes changed their minds and made us leave. I was back to square one in my car looking for a place to eat for us in a new city I'm not familiar. Awful.

The view from Ray's is spectacular. The food is good, but not particularly note-worthy. For the prices you should get blown away. My caveat is that we were there for restaurant week, but if the place can't make good food when it's trying to impress people to come back what is it going to be like on a regular day.

I've visited Ray's Boathouse for 20 years. I am amazed how this restaurant continues to maintain its level of quality and service. I've never (no kidding) had a bad meal here. I'd give it 10 stars if I could.

This was my first time dining at Ray's Boathouse. I had ordered the duck confit dish for Seattle Restaurant Week. Not only were the duck almost invisible and the dish is basically beans, the beans were not all cooked through. When the waiter was informed, he asked if he can bring me a replacement, I declined, but he took my plate away and I never saw it again. I thought he would pack it for me, but he did not. I was surprised when I was still charged for the dish even though I only took 3 bites out of it and the waiter took the plate away without packing it up for me. The waiter was pleasant and courteous, I just felt the situation should have been better handled for a better dining experience.

We try to dine at RB at least twice a year, often during Dine Around. Our experience this time was very disappointing. The pros Great service Beautiful view Good wine choices by the glass The Cons The meal For my starter, I ordered the stuffed peppers. Couldn't shake their vinegar flavor the entire evening My entree was a mediocre ling cod. So sad because it's one of my favorite fish. The tomato sauce was bland. It lacked salt abs herbs/ garlic and was thin. The fennel slices were oversized, raw, and not at all flavorful. The tirimazu was also blan. It did not have any rich flavor of chocolate or coffee. The chocolate dust on top nearly choked me. Not a great ending for an underwhelming meal.

We had early reservations so we could make our 7:30 curtain. My daughter and I ordered from the Sunset menu and both had delightful meals. The tuna was delightfully rare and the mushroom linguine was both flavorful and L al dente. Service was the perfect balance between professional and friendly. Wish I lived locally so I could come back soon!

Ray's always delivers whether in the restaurant or cafe. The only thing that surpasses the view is the food and service. The menu changes just enough to be interesting while always offering favorites. We always enjoy Ray's and it worth the longer drive to get there. Certainly a special event destination for romantic sunsets but affordable enuf to enjoy regularly!

The view is amazing, the staff was AWESOME (attentive, knowledgeable about the wine and food), and the food was DELICIOUS. We came from Minneapolis to celebrate our anniversary and Ray's did not disappoint. The seafood was fresh which is the main reason we came here was through recommendations from Seattle residents.

I've been a frequent diner of Ray's for decades. Our occasion was a birthday dinner so I had my favorite - the Sablefish in Sake Kasu. Dee-lish! It's just as good as the first time I had it; as were our appetizers, drinks and dessert. Oh, and the view's not too shabby either. Highly recommend.

  • Best View Ever in Seattle

    Dined on 10/4/2014
We were staying in downtown Seattle, so I was a little hesitant on going to a restaurant that was 20 minutes outside the city. When we finally arrived, our jaws were wide open for the first 30 minutes and we couldn't put away our cameras/phones. We got there 45 minutes before sunset, and it was one of the best I'd ever seen...anywhere! The food was pretty good and the bartender was overworked and short with us, but we didn't care. The view is what made this place. If I come back to Seattle, I'm definitely making a trip back to Ray's Boathouse.

Our family recently celebrated a special birthday at Ray's. The food was delicious, the view of the Olympics sunset was beautiful and our server was quite capable and friendly. Unfortunately, we had to wait 35 minutes for our entrees to arrive after salad plates were cleared, and our waiter was absorbed with other tables during this period. When you're hungry and trying to keep kids from spiraling toward poor behavior, this feels like an eternity to sit with dinner rolls and empty glasses. Our waiter volunteered to subtract the cost of one appetizer to compensate for the long wait, which was the right thing to do. All good restaurants have occasional glitches like this.

We chose Ray's for a special birthday and they did a great job of making it special, with a birthday card at the table and custom artwork on the dessert we ordered. Food was excellent and server was very knowledgable. On her recommendation I tried sablefish for the first time; very tasty and well prepared. The entire reason for choosing Ray's was so wife could have king crab legs. They were hard to find anywhere else, but she was not disappointed at Ray's. It was a great evening. We enjoyed it thoroughly.

Over the last few years we have found that many of the very good restaurants that we enjoyed have really gone down hill for taste and price for the food delivered. My boyfriend and I went to Ray's for a romantic dinner, and we were not disappointed. We got there just after sunset, and sat in a table facing the water. Watched a few boats float by the window as we shared two fantastic entrees: the sirloin with jumbo prawns, and the king salmon. The server was polite and attentive without being too formal. Very happy!

I must say that Ray's Boathouse has a great view right down by the water. Unfortunately, that has nothing to do with the actual restaurant. That was mother nature's doing. The first thing that kind of put me off at Ray's Boathouse was the tepid water that they serve you when you sit down - no ice, just tepid tap water. The second thing I noticed was when a member of our party ordered a soda. It came in an 8oz bottle. I have never seen an 8oz bottle, but it told me two things - One - there are no free refills and Two - this place is really frugal. I had their sirloin and prawns. The steak was good, albeit, small. You'll notice that the menu does not specify the size of the cut; probably because it's the smallest they could find.

The view is outstanding but the food is not. Drinks and salads were good but not great. Pork and tuna were overdone by a long shot, even when we stated a preference upon ordering. It took so long to get our food that we did not ask to have it redone. Only one vegetarian offering. All six of us felt we would not go back.

Every major U.S. city has a Ray's equivalent. Best local fish; a reasonable tho not incredible wine list; well trained staff; predictable quality. We like it (because we're serious fish eaters). We had dinner in the more formal restaurant and returned on a Sunday afternoon to Ray's Cafe for lunch. Fabulous location on Shilshole Bay. We're San Franciscans and Ray's can certainly be compared to good traditional fish houses anywhere.

We recently went to Ray's Boathouse for our anniversary dinner and found that it had been renovated and the menu updated. We had not been there since the restaurant was updated a few years back. The food preparations were odd and seem to be from an amateur chef who was trying to impress with the "art" of food rather than taste first. The dining room was stark painted glossy navy, very little art, tables were the same from before the renovation which did not fit the modern look they were trying to achieve.

As always, Ray's does not disappoint. First time at the Boathouse rather than the VERY busy cafe upstairs. We were seated by the window on the water with a stunning view across the sound to the Olympics and the ensuing sunset. Food was well prepared with good portions. Not too small, not too large. Halibut was very good and I enjoyed the Sablefish in Sake though it was a little sweet in spots and a little too salty in others. I would opt for the smoked version next time just to taste the difference. Clams in wonderful broth with a little kick to it that was quite good and the crab salad was excellent full of crab, rather than greens! Will definitely be back as we love the ambience and location.
