Diner Reviews
  • "Food was great and our server was wonderful. Hostess was very rough and a little rude."
    Dined on 4/11/2014
  • "Have been here several times and love it! Have tried to find sushi as good at other places and have not found any! Have decided that if I want great sushi I have to go to Raw!"
    Dined on 4/5/2014
  • "Loved the wonderful sushi and sashimi and the gorgeous seaweed salad. Sake was a good visit to a past good time, but miss wine. If you offer beer, think you need to offer some decent wine too."
    Dined on 4/4/2014
  • "Raw is great. Interesting rolls, attentive service, and very tasty. However, it's pricey. Now, maybe that's because of the quality of the fish, but honestly, I can't tell the difference between this, and the sushi I get at my local place, for half the price. So go, enjoy, but consider yourself warned, the bill will not be small."

  • "When we want GREAT sushi, we know where to go. Can't wait for it to be warm enough to join our friends on the patio. Thanks for making every experience a good one..."

  • "I went for the Sushi and got a lot more! Great place to visit. Will make it a regular stop now."

  • "I have been here many times and I always have a great experience. Even though is seems busy, I find that very few people know its there. A must try if you have never been!"

  • "My husband and I went to Raw to celebrate by 30th birthday. We were 15 minutes early for our 6pm reservation, but the hostess seated us immediately. The menu can be a bit expensive if you are going for dinner, but the quality and flavor of the food is worth it. I had squid, eel, uni (sea urchin) and plum paste sushi, and everything was fresh and delicious. My only minor complaint (and I cannot fault the restaurant for this) is that there was a wait for our food due to a lot of carry-out or a la carte orders placed before ours, but the wait staff informed us of the delay well in advance. All in all, a great date night sushi place."

  • "Everything other than the table was amazing. The waiter didn't tell me I'd be charged for extra eel sauce but hey that's my fault for loving eel sauce so much I guess. We were a group of 5 and got seated at an awkward sideways table, with a booth on one side and both ends so we were one-three-one-none around the four sides of the table. Because of the weird seating we had basically two separate dinners, because we were so far at one end from the people on the other end that the only person who could talk to both sides without shouting was the one in the middle. Food was DELICIOUS and price point fine. Just bummed that our family dinner got split up!"

  • "The one thing above all required of a sushi bar; a product that was swimming the night before it was served. RAW meets or exceeds that "must" then adds creative specials, a selection of items not found on every menu such as "Suzuki" (sea bass) plus a small but diverse choice of sake. Make reservations, GO!"

  • "Restaurant has excellent decor. Food was delicious and the menu has a lot of variety. It is a little pricey, but go during restaurant week for a bargain. Bathrooms were clean."
    Dined on 1/24/2014
  • "The sushi was excellent. Very fresh and flavorful. Easy access to parking which I find important when in the city."

  • "Delicious, creative sushi! Spicy sashimi salad, special rolls and wonderful tuna varieties. Service was excellent and knowledgeable, offering thoughts on same and wine pairings as well as tasting. We enjoyed it very much!"

  • "This restaurant, although expensive, is fantastic. I had to change the number of people in my party twice AND my party was late and they accommodated me with no complaints! Their service is impeccable and their food is also amazing. I give this restaurant a star review!"

  • "My girlfriend and I dined here on a Thursday evening and we had a lovely meal. Sashimi of Yellowtail, California roll, edamame; nothing too exotic, but all tasted delicious. I would recommend this place for sushi lovers. Their dishes are so exquisitely-served, and their cocktails delicious! I had the Lady Dragon. Mmm - mmm good!"

  • "Very attentive to our needs - little things like halving the rolls for each end of the long table. The sushi and rolls were the best we have had - and we live a block from one of the best sushi bars in Northern California. A great dining experience top to bottom."

  • "Could not have been happier with anything that we ordered. We got a sashimi appetizer and 4 rolls, The presentation was great, and the sushi was better!"
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "I went with my wife and sister for valentines day. We had to wait about 20 minutes after our reservation to be seated. The sushi was great. A little pricey, but generally you pay more for good sushi. The service was slow for a dining room that wasn't very busy as well. All in all, it was a very good meal, but in the future I would recommend getting an appetizer."

  • "They seated us at the back of the restaurant near a wall of glass that fronted a street. The draft that was coming through the doors was so cold that we had to wear our coats throughout the entire meal. The server didn't seem to care and at no point did a manager come over to address this or move our table. They should be embarrassed that patrons had to eat dinner in winter coats in their establishment. Nonetheless, we braved the arctic blast at our table and ordered the Vday prix fixe menu which was mediocre at best and a couple of martinis which took a half hour to arrive (I suspect they forgot about us over in Siberia). To her credit, the server did offer to remove them from our bill. We'll see if Amex removes that charge."

  • "RAW has incredible sushi and a great atmosphere. Smack in the middle of Samson Street in Philly, you would never guess they have outside seating in the summer, but wedged between Raw and their neighbors is a great little courtyard where you can relax on sofas or sit at tables and enjoy their Sushi. Nice bar inside, too. We are addicted to their sushi. Always great service. Not only do the wait staff intimately know the specials every time, but the bartenders do, too. I HIGHLY recommend RAW."

  • "RAW was recommended to me and it did not disappoint. Service was exceptional, great atmosphere and the sushi is fantastic. I highly recommend for sushi lovers."

  • "Had Sushi and some good specialty drinks.... They have a nice outdoor area, but we were inside based on the weather... We enjoyed the drinks which complimented the Pretty good bar scene... Not really a special occasion place, and decor is not that special.. . But for good service, good drinks and some decent sushi with a bunch of friends it's a good choice..."

  • "RAW never disappoints - great sushi, awesome service and cool atmosphere."

  • "RAW is a beautiful place. I'm not too much of a hole-in-the-wall kind of guy, so the location wasn't my personal favourite, but any thoughts of the outside world melted away as soon as I walked through the curtain entrance. The whole place was a low-light theme with red accent lights. Of course, service was fantastic from the moment we walked in. There were only two of us, but we also saw a small groups of what seemed to be businesspeople during happy hour. We came in at 5:30, so the place was almost empty. The food was delicious, and the mochi ice cream is something everyone should try. For a three-course meal, the bill for two came to $70. It was restaurant week, but I still think that the price is quite reasonable. New customer for life!"

  • "My friend and I had a delicious dinner recently and the food is as good as I remember it. We shared an appetizer and I got the sashimi appetizer for my main course. The fish is always fresh and tasty."
    Dined on 1/25/2014
  • "Raw offered great sushi and drinks loved the salmon volcano roll and the margarita falls cocktail. The only reason why I wouldn't give this place 5 stars is because at the end of the night our waiter charged us an extra 19.00 on the bill. I went out with a party of 6 and the gratuity was already added.. So I wasn't sure if it was an innocent mistake or a way to get a bigger tip. However, I would return the sushi was made to perfection and the tofu soup was very tasty."

  • "We had a party of four and tons of two tops that got sat before us. We had to wait forty plus minutes past our reservation time. They final held two small tables and put them together for us. Luckily we didn’t have a tight timeline. There was not enough room at the bar for us to grab a drink; we just had to stand piled on top of each other in the very crowed atrium. Once we got seated the service was fast and the food was fantastic! They had a special “Drunken Dragon” roll that was amazing!!! The “Channel” cocktail was really good too. The males were quite impressed with the men's room and loved the fountain/urinal wall. They actually took pictures to show us and posted on Facebook."

  • "Food and ambiance are top notch. However, similar to other reviews I've read, the wait is long...even with a reservation. We had to wait almost an hour for our reservation which was a bit annoying. The place was packed, so my friends and I felt super squished trying to get drinks at the bar as we waited for our table. Although food was fantastic, they were out of a lot of the options I wanted to try which was disappointing."

  • "There are a lot of great sushi options in the area. I found RAW to be extremely over priced for basic options. I would only return for happy hour."

  • "You're not going to find a better sushi restaurant in Philadelphia."

  • "My friend and I ate at RAW for the first time on NYE. Our waiter was fantastic! Due to sinking cushions, we did not like the booth we were seated at so he moved our seat immediately. We ordered the PreFixe Menu thinking it would be an over abundance of food... and to our surprise, each course was perfectly portioned! The only complaint I have is that we were in the restaurant till about 11:55 and there was no mention of time regarding the ball dropping."
    Dined on 12/31/2013
  • "The atmosphere was great. We ordered an eel & avocado maki, a udon noodle stir fried with beef, and a donburi with spicy beef. The maki was fine, and we were both very happy about the udon noodle and the donburi."
    Dined on 12/15/2013
  • "The bartender was very friendly and offered me the specials of the day. Sushi was good; but I have had more flavorful sushi."

  • "Not a place I'll be running back to before I try some of the other sushi places around the city. I came here with a (first) date and while the food and conversation was good, I didn't like how close we were to other tables (only a foot of gap at most). I'm pretty sure diners three tables away could have listened to every word we said if they tried. Not a bad place to come if you've got a group of people going out to have fun, but not good for a night out for conversation, drinks, and food with a date."

  • "Wow. What a nice surprise. Friends had recommended this place as best sushi in Center City and it totally delivered! Brought a friend from out of town to 'show off' Center City and this place was perfect. Booked a 6:15 dinner on Saturday and restaurant started slow but was jam packed when we left...having successfully avoided the CRUSH of the crowd. Started with Edamame then avocado green salad (delicious & light), followed by Rainbow Roll (packed with some of the freshest fish I have found in Philly), then ended with a new traditional dish that I had never heard of called the Donburi...it BLEW my mind. unique dish that was delectable...sort of a vegetable rice casseroled with chicken...huge portion perfect for two. I will be back!"

  • "I recently visited Philadelphia and went to RAW for my birthday dinner. The staff was helpful, kind and prompt. The food was absolutely beautiful and delicious! We were given rolls compliment of the chef and was treated to a free birthday dessert of tempura bananas and green tea ice cream. I highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "We have been eating here for many many years with consistent excellent food until recently... Recently the food has just been "ok". Many of the dishes have changed and no longer taste the same. Their tuna tartare was one of the best in the city and now is lackluster and looks like it came out of a can. The sushi rolls don't taste as vibrant, they're boring and taste like you could get them anywhere. The chicken in our udon noodle dish was way overcooked and didn't taste like it was cooked with the noodles. I hate to see a good restaurant on the decline, but I would think long and hard before spending my money there again."

  • "I had reservations for 7pm and we were seated right away. Our waters came out quick as did the beverages ordered from the bar. Our food came out even faster and was absolutely delicious (we had the shrimp and lobster spring roll for appetizer, miso soup and sushi rolls along with banana tempura for dessert). The service was excellent, our empty plates were never on the table for more than 5 minutes. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant!!"

  • "My reservation was for 8:45, confirmed via open table. We did not sit to eat until close to 10 p.m., and with no explanation as to why. the food was overall still good, but at that point we were unfortunately just turned off due to the wait"
    Dined on 11/8/2013
  • "Nothing horrible to say about this restaurant. But equally bad is that we had nothing good to say about it either. We stated with drinks. The hot sake was good and abundant. My drink (Dragon Lady, I think) was completely unmemorable. While having drinks, we looked at the menu and found that it was such a generic menu we lost interest. What we both agreed for that for a very few extra dollars, we could experience greater sashimi/sushi variety just a few blocks west....so we finished/paid for our drinks and walked to the other restaurant. If you are just looking for basic, then eat here. If you want more from your meal...look elsewhere."
