Raven & Rose offers classic farmhouse cookery, fine cocktails, beer and wine in Portland’s historic Ladd Carriage House. The first-floor dining room features the finest, simply-prepared cuisine, rooted in American cooking and influenced by the British Isles. The atmosphere is warm and inviting with the highest level of attentive, friendly service.

The second-floor vaulted hayloft space is now a classic bar and lounge furnished with leather sofas, armchairs and cocktail tables that is at once intimate and grand, with soaring open trusses and a beautiful fireplace. It provides an exclusive hideaway for sipping cocktails inspired by the building’s exuberant history, for meeting friends for a game of chess or billiards, or enjoying after-dinner drinks, coffee and dessert.

  • "Brought out of town guests here as I wanted to try a new spot- food was really phenomenal, front of house was gracious, welcoming and informative (the building has historical significance). Plenty of small plates to do a tapas-like meal, and we all split one entree- house-made tagliatelle, and even though this is not a specifically Italian restaurant, the chef knows what al dente means, and the pasta had just the right amount of sauce. Will be back with local friends and likely make it a regular spot, very reasonable prices for the quality of the food, plus they serve bread from Ken's Artisan bakery - nuff said!"

  • "One of the only negative things about knowing several amazing chefs is that you become very critical, especially when dining out, about your food. We were looking for a romantic place for our ninth anniversary, looked a several websites and reviews before coming across the Raven & Rose. It was perfect! Nicer than where we would go for a quick dinner in Corvallis, but not intimidating. The service was attentive without being invasive. The starter, wine, and main courses were, for lack of a better word, perfect :) I had the pork chop, my partner had the braised rabbit, and we shared the artisan cheese plate. My only complaint is that I had zero too for dessert... I can only image how delicious it would have been."

  • "The Good: the ambience, the heirloom tomato salad, the beer, the sides. The Bad: limited menu (broccoli cream on a pizza? rabbit but no chicken?). The 'pastrami' treated hangar steak was way too salty and inedible; my husband and I could only take a few bites and left the rest. Server intentionally had the salad delivered with the entree(?) and didn't check in till the end of the meal and just shrugged but did comp us a beer. The Ugly: well, there's no ugly but it made for a good headline. Too bad we were so disappointed since I used to like this place but there's way too many other better options in Portland."

I had been there previously for lunch, and am happy to recommend it for either lunch or dinner. The food was excellent and well-prepared and the service was first rate.   • "This was our second visit to Raven and Rose, and we were again delighted with the outstanding service and excellent food. We were especially impressed with how a couple of problems were handled with aplomb and utmost professionalism. My friends' delayed flight into Portland necessitated a last minute request to change our reservation time, which was honored graciously without hesitation or demur. When a salmon entree turned out to be overcooked, it was replaced with a perfectly prepared piece of fish, with the personal apologies and concern of every staff member involved in our meal, from the chef to the server to the manager. We thank them all for a wonderful evening, and look forward to our next visit!"

  • "We went for the Sunday Roast before going to a show at Keller Auditorium. We had a great time and the food was very good in terms of flavor and presentation, but the sirloin tip was cold (as was the after dinner coffee) and the pork, while not cold was not really hot either."

  • "This place is ok, and I really mean ok. We both stared at the menu for a while hoping something would look good. Perhaps you would not have the same problem if Pastrami hanger steak sounds good to you? We would have left, but we made reservations based on a friends recommendation and we only had so much time before catching a show. The outside looks like a farmhouse, but the inside is modern and lacking in anything romantic or quaint. The service I will say was excellent. And the wine (Pinot Noir) was fabulous. I guess Im just not into English influenced food (They arent known for there cuisine afterall) Over all it was just a flat dining experience that just seemed to lack anything really special."

  • "We decided to have dinner here before a show at Keller auditorium. We were notified of the Sunday Family Dinner before our reservation: each diner chooses one of the proteins and 2 sides, all served family style. The salmon, and prime rib were amazing although the lamb was chewy and gamey. However, the side dishes mades up for this: carrots and padron peppers, roasted radishes, mushrooms, and salads all celebrate the local bounty and are well prepared and seasoned. I wish the salad came with the advertised dried cherries. And the Old Fashioned is one of the best in Portland."

  • "The Heathman recommended the R&R. The recommendation was well deserved. The food was exceptional. Perfectly prepared and served. The Shrimp and Clams appetizer was excellent and almost too much for two people. We ordered the salmon and the steak and mushrooms for entrée and both were fabulous. I have never had a better prepared salmon filet. Just the right doneness and texture. The steak and mushrooms were accompanied by a really tasty Yorkshire pudding. The dining experience was comfortable and the staff attentive but not overbearing. As we were celebrating our 45th anniversary, we were offered a lovely and different raspberry pavlova for dessert free of charge. The experience offered the best of both English pub and fine dining."

  • "I am pretty picky on food, so three star is a good score for food. We went for lunch, many of the dinner specialties are not available. They could be more interesting food wise. We had mussel and qiche, both were good. The most interesting part is however its history and setting, very nice and romantic. We went up and tour the bar area as well, again very interesting. Service was very good and friendly. All in all, this is a good place to take out of town guests."

  • "We came here on Father's Day, not knowing that there was a special family-style menu for the evening. The server took the time to make sure that we ordered everything that we would want, didn't over-order, but had the perfect dinner. His beer suggestion was spot-on and we were made to feel very welcome. We were shown the space upstairs which functions as a bar, as well as a rental for private parties. We can't wait to come back and check out the bar scene some evening. We will definitely be back for dinner."

  • "Went for brunch - food was great but service definitely needs improvement. We were initially not attended and once i tried to ask someone to come over he became very pushy. While all of our friends were chatting, he just stood between our seats and interrupted our conversation to take the orders. Also we were automatically charged gratuity although we have one baby and 1 very young kid. If service can be improved, this place will rock."

  • "We've lived in Portland for 7 months and have eaten out 2-3 times/wk at a whole variety of places - this is probably the best meal we've had. Others came close but this pipped them. Service was v. good (Tracy). Welsh Rarebit and Ribeye excellent (although the Yorkshire Pud wasn't as good as my mother's). My wife had Beet Salad and Raven Cheese Plate- she was particularly taken with the honey with the blue cheese - an unusual combination. My 2 complaints - atmosphere in the 3 booths behind check-in is like sitting in a corridor, which you are and draft beer selection is a bit limited - other than that can't recommend this place highly enough. Its not cheap but is less so that other places claiming to be fine dining without the same success."

  • "My boyfriend and I ate here about a year ago and had an amazing dining experience. I'd been raving about this place to all ever since. I was so excited to bring my son here on weekend trip to Portland. It was an embarrassment. My son's steak was ok, but bland. My rabbit was completely inedible. Overcooked to a beyond rubbery texture. I hoped desserts would redeem the meal but they were nothing special. Just sugary concoctions. Yuk. So disappointing. My original memory forever tarnished. "

  • "Raven and Rose, housed in the historic Ladd Carriage house, is a welcome addition to the Portland food scene. The food is hard to categorize - nominally American fine dining but with notable Irish and British pub food influences (think Yorkshire puddings, Irish stews, and mustardy sauces). The menu tends to be heavy on meat, though there are always fish/vegetarian options, and includes a variety of custom cocktails and extensive wine/non-alcoholic drink list. Despite the old-school feel, service is not-as-stuffy-as-you'd-expect. Still a step below the finest restaurants in Portland, but an excellent all-around restaurant."

I had the lamb shoulder and it just melted in my mouth. We decided to visit the bar upstairs for an after dinner drink and they had such a nice list of specialty drinks we had two."

  • "We had reservations this past Sunday for our anniversary. It was for 8.30pm. 1. They didn't have a table reserved and sat us at a table right behind a really load pair of people at the bar. 1. They only had their 'Sunday Roast' package: Beef, Pork or Fish. When we tried to order the Prime Rib, they had run out. 2. We settled for the Pork. We received mostly fat in our meat. Each slice was 50% fat. Waitress shrugged when we told her. The manager came, doesn't look at us, and starts to clear our plates. He says "We were going to pay for your dessert as it is your anniversary. But what do you want now? More food?". He was rude, sullen and unhelpful at best. Our experience was not positive. We left feeling bullied, and $100 poorer. "

  • "My boyfriend and I had eaten here before and were very pleased, but this time was even better. Everything was cooked right and very tasty. the sauces on both dishes were smooth and flavorful. There was a nice mix of common and unusual ingredients. I had never had frikeh before, and I didn't find it freaky at all. The service was friendly, but not overly so, and the wine steward made an excellent recommendation for wine that would compliment both our meals and be within our price range. We were both very pleased with this dining experience."

  • "We dined on a warm and particularly quiet evening where we had much of the restaurant to ourselves. The food was delicious, beautifully presented and the portions were just right. The service was slow which may be due to preparing everything fresh, but the quality was worth it. I ordered the Diver Scallops which I thought were too salty, but the accompanying potato croquettes were perfect and helped balance them out a little. Dessert was amazing, and not to be missed! I definitely plan to try their brunch sometime."

Choice of dessert for $35 a head...would highly recommend ...and will return another Sunday. Kudos to the owner for the great idea...we miss our British Sunday roasts..."
