Diner Reviews
  • "A great find after a day at the Grounds for Sculpture. Great food, great service, good variety, excellent attention to detail and the most attentive waiting staff you will ever find. The ambience is exceptional as well."

  • "Although we had dinner reservations, the hostess attempted to seat us upstairs, in a small, dim dining room with a view of the building roof and next to the serving station. Why do restaurants always do this? We requested a table downstairs and were accommodated with our request. The food was good, but not outstanding. I chose the butter-poached lobster special which was slightly overcooked, my companions ordered duck and filet mignon and were happy with their choices. "

  • "Excellent place to go, by far one of the best places I have ever been to, unique to say the least and a stroll around the grounds is a must. Brian our server is the best. Recommend for special "dates" and also for happy hour at the bar which is half price drinks and low cost but very tasty finger foods."
    Dined on 4/17/2014
  • "Often when visiting a museum or tourist location the food is greasy fries and chicken fingers. Our lunch was good, not prepared in advance, and the staff was very nice. On a cool April weekday there were still a few tables, but I would recommend making a reservation during warmer dates. "

  • "Overall the experience was positive, the service was outstanding, the atmosphere could not have been better, making a reservation was simple and the food for the most part was good with some exception. The mussels were 5 stars, appetizers - 5 stars, deserts - 5 stars, scallops - 4 stars, DUCK - 3 stars (a disappointment). The scallops were good tasting however a little on the dry side. The duck had a great flavor BUT was undercooked even though I asked for med and it was chewy not tender like friends who dined there before us said it would be. Would we return? The atmosphere was really great and we would give Rats another try."

  • "Restaurant has an outdoor patio that sits on a lake. Beautiful view of the grounds with sculptures everywhere. Even the entrance to the restaurant is a treat."
    Dined on 4/12/2014
  • "The food was very nice, the waiter was wonderful. But the hostess to get us a table was border line unpleasant. My husband spoke with her three times about a table and each time it was more frustrating than the next. We had reservations, all he wanted was a table outside and could not get a straight answer. However, once we got the stress of getting a table, the setting alone was worth it. Lovely for lunch or early dinner."

  • "Rats is located on the edge of the Grounds for Sculpture so the restaurant is unique for its location which is beautiful. We have eaten dinner there about 8 or 9 times over the years and each time I have been disappointed with the selection of food. Just one example is there is no green salad on their menu. The choices are really limited as far as entrees are-concerned and I usually end up with the chicken. We ha;ve had better luck with their lunch menu and they also have a cocktail menu which we have enjoyed but as far as dinner is concerned this is not where we will go again.."

  • "My family and I had a wonderful celebration for my 50th birthday! The food and the service was absolutely wonderful! The outside atmosphere was breathtaking. We were impressed by the manager he came over and spoke to us on several occasions. We had such a great time walking around and seeing all the lovely sculptures! We are definitely coming back with our mother for Mother's Day!"

  • "We went for a special occasion and were reminded that we should definitely go more often. The atmosphere is a get away that reminds you of being back in a european experience. Food and service are outstanding. We had a party of 9 that included a wide variety of choices. Specialty drinks for all to start. The onion soup was raved about and the meats were prepared to taste and temperature!Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Walk the grounds and enjoy the bar as well"

  • "Everything was fabulous. It's so much fun to bring people there for the first time because they are always so impressed with the restaurant and the Grounds for Sculpture."

  • "This "Wind in the Willows" themed restaurant is charming and inviting. The food selections are varied and the food is very good. The view of the pond with the sculptures, huge koi and early spring blooms was delightful. A thoroughly enjoyable restaurant in the midst of the wonderful Grounds for Sculpture."

  • "Despite its unappetizing name, Rat's offers a delightful, whimsical and esthetically pleasing experience from start to finish. The restaurant is part of Seward Johnson's Grounds for Sculpture, and overlooks a pond and bridge designed to echo Monet's water lily paintings. The decor is rich without being overwhelming, the wait staff is friendly and helpful, and the food is superb. It is a fantasy dining experience set in a dream-like park, a uniquely satisfying way to spend an afternoon or evening."

  • "A group of 8 of us went to Grounds for Sculpture for a late afternoon and ended a wonderful day at Rat's. We were pleasantly surprised: all of us left feeling it was one of the best meals we'd ever had. Everything was excellent."

  • "We always have a great experience at Rat's. The food is delicious with fresh ingredients and the atmosphere is cozy and comfortable no matter which room you are in. It is a wonderful choice for a special occasion. If you are able to leave time to wander the sculpture gardens after or before your meal I would highly recommend it."

  • "You can't beat the setting. Ground for Sculpture is simply fantastic. Rat's building and grounds are as fabulous as can be. The food is always wonderful, while the prices are very reasonable for the sophisticated and well executed menu. Always a treat! We've been going there for years, and are very happy to see the level of culinary experience going back up, after a few years of more generic menu. Now, it is once again a GREAT place!"

  • "Rat's never disappoints. The food and service are allways top notch. Although it can be a bit pricey, we went during their spring menu special, a 3 course meal for $49! What a fantastic deal."
    Dined on 3/28/2014
  • "An evening of welcome culinary decadence with each course surpassing the previous! We began with a more than ample price fixe three course and tacked on several side dishes including all three sides, two soups, two entrees and three deserts. Highlights included butternut squash soup, rabbit with pasta, truffled Brussels sprouts, flatbread with Brie and marmalade and a creme brûlée with marshmallow cream to die for. I highly recommend Rats, every meal has been unique and it's the perfect venue for me to try brand new dishes and taste combinations. Exceptional value."

  • "The restaurant is simply beautiful and located next to a small pond as if in Monet's Garden in Giverny, France. The décor is superb, setting perfect, service immaculate and the really good food is an American take on classic French. I can't fault anything. After a perfect lunch my party and I took a stroll through Grounds for Sculpture anthey even allow you to take(alcoholic) drinks from the bar to wak around with. A great experience and very highly recommended."

  • "The place is beautiful! The staff was friendly and professional. The service was excellent, quick, and accomodating to our dietary restrictions. Everyone in our party loved the food. All the lunch dishes we ordered as well as the appetizer looked and tasted great. I would definitely recommend the Rat's restaurant for everyone who is willing to spend a little bit more for an outstanding eating experience. I would love to go back for dinner next time."

  • "Fine dining in an exquisite restaurant. Located on the beautiful Grounds for Sculpture, Rats is a wonderful place to dine. The food is excellent and the service is flawless. It is a wonderful place to go to celebrate a special occasion or just to have a very fine lunch or dinner. I think it is one of the best restaurants in the area."

  • "Rats is such a hidden gem! I have been there 3 times and have not been dissaointed once. The happy hour is amazing! Great menu and great wines, their lunch/dinner menu is also great. I am a vegetarian so I ordered the soup du jour and the spinach salad. Both were excellent! I will always come back to rats, my server was extremely polite and although there was a wait for the food, I had no idea until she mentioned it. It is the perfect date place to get lost and catch up for a few hours!"

  • "We could not have enjoyed our fixed price lunch. For $20 wag we enjoyed a smoked salmon appetizer and a charcuterie that made us feel back in Italy. My mussels main course was excellent. My husband's pastrami sandwich was great and half came home with us. Our server Brian was attentive and helpful. All things considered a great value and great lunch in a magical setting."

  • "I hadn't been to Rat's for a meal before this visit. I am now sorry I haven't been visiting more often. Their staff has thought of everything to make the customer comfortable. Each room is beautifully appointed and a pleasure to dine in. The food is delicious and the menu is up to date with interesting items."

  • "I surprised my wife by taking her to Rat's for her birthday. We are new to the area and we didn't know where we should go, at first I reserved a table for two but then after our babysitter was not able to watch our kids, I added two more seats. They gave us a table near the back of the restaurant, which was very nice. We loved the ambiance as well as the service; honestly, I didn't know how it would look for me to bring my kids at the last minute but the Hospitality staff at Rat's were very accommodating. Even the waiter/waitresses came over and engaged our children in conversation; we absolutely loved this place. Although we live in Princeton, my wife and I've designated Rat's as the one restaurant to bring our out-of-state family to."

  • "My husband and I had dinner with another couple and everything was excellent. In March Rat's offered a weeknight prix-fixe menu that's an outstanding bargain. Three of us had first-course salads -- two kale, one calamari -- and one guest had butternut squash soup. The portions were surprisingly generous. For the main course two of us had escolar -- a monkfish-like white fish that was cooked in a sake sauce. The other two enjoyed short ribs en daube. Our desserts included house-made sorbets and ice creams and a killer chocolate creme brulee. We chose the prix-fixe with wine pairings, which were perfect accompaniments to the dishes. As always one of the best things about the evening was the impeccable service. Rat's is simply the best."

  • "We've dined at Rat's many times as we are members of Grounds for Sculpture. We chose to have lunch there on March 14th in order to take advantage of two special offers. For the entire month of March, there was a two course lunch special for $20. Then for the week of March 10th to 14th, for the celebration of Albert Einstein's birthday, they had a special menu of drinks and appetizers for $3.14 (the value of Pi). We each ordered a drink and an appetizer from the Pi menu and then we had our entree and dessert from the two for $20 menu. We had the cocktail made with citrus vodka and a blend of grapefruit and other juices. The food at Rat's is always great and the atmosphere is lovely, especially the Kabul Cafe and patio on warm days."

  • "This is a beautiful, elegant dining room and bar overlooking the sculpture garden. Service was attentive though the meal was uneven in success. We passed on the creative cocktails, and enjoyed sharing the mussel entree as an appetizer, served with warm crusty bread. I did think it was a limited menu as we weren't struggling between choices. The pastrami sandwich that the waitress highly recommended, was like shoe leather. My uncomplaining husband chose to leave most of it on his plate. My Cobb Salad was a better choice, served with good salad dressing. We ended with a shared tasty warm apple cobbler, served with a taste of cinnamon ice cream. Coffee was plentiful, rich and full bodied. Lunch was about $60., before the tip."

  • "My husband and I went to Rats prior to touring the Grounds for Sculpture. Our server was friendly, professional, and well-trained. The bloody Marys were delicious! We just ordered the cheese platter and sandwiches, all of which was nicely presented and tasty. I would love to come back in warmer weather and enjoy dining outdoors."

  • "Rats is a very pleasant experience. It's location with the sculpture gardens which are exquisite is a plus for this restaurant. The specials are very interesting fare which one must avail oneself. The presentation, plating is quite good, somewhere between 4 & 5 star quality. The service was attentive and pleasant Of course all the niceties and amenities come with a price which is well beyond the typical theme restaurants saturating New Jersey. But Rats is what it portends to be unlike so many others that lead you to believe they really know food preparation, quality and plating. We recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants a nice dining experience less the pomp."

  • "We've been to Rat's many times over the years, mostly for special occasions. It is a bit of a drive, but so worth it. Such a magical place - the restaurant, the Morrocan bar with tent near the fireplace to have a drink, the gardens. The food is always excellent. If you're looking for someplace special for a birthday or anniversary, this is definitely the place."

  • "I absolutely loved the chef's tasting menu with wine pairing. It was an exquisite experience! Counting down until I can go again. I have recommended this place to everyone I know since dining there on 02/15/14. The service is impeccable... from the complimentary valet, to the coat check person, to the abundant waitstaff... superb!"

  • "It was a nice dinner with typical good service. I was expecting it to be exceptional but it fell a bit short. My escargot and ravioli appetizer came out lukewarm, almost room temperature so the ravioli seemed a bit hard. My Carmelized Scallops main course was very good. Service was good but a bit abrupt. We arrived about a half an hour (we called) and they were understanding and gracious. I will try dinner here again."
