Diner Reviews
  • "As always dining at Rats was a wonderful experience. Interesting menu, excellent food and service.Dining on the patio near the pond is always enjoyable"

  • "Even though we arrived one-half hour earlier, we were accommodated at an outdoor table, which went well. Too few restaurants in the U.S. have dining outdoors in such an unusually lovely spot. This was not our first time at Rat's. However, as I booked online, there was no way to request the outdoor dining other than upon arrival at Rat's. I did find it a bit intrusive that so many people roamed around with cameras to take pictures."

  • "We are from Virginia and get the AAA magazine that had an excellent write-up for the restaurant. We were not disappointed in the gardens or the restaurant. We have an aunt in Mt laurel and will bring her there the next time we are up that way."

  • "Didn't know what to expect when we planned our trip to the Grounds for Sculpture and we were Amazed! The grounds were lovely, so well planned out. The Sculptures were awesome. We had the most enjoyable day and lunch at Rat's was wonderful. We ate outside on the patio near Monet's bridge, scenic and lovely. Looking forward to a return trip."

  • "Had a lovely lunch at Rats Restaurant! We snared a table for 2 directly overlooking the water and had a lovely view of the beautiful scenery. Our server was attentive and pleasant. I had the Tuna Nicoise Salad which I enjoyed. It was quite tasty! My dining companion got the Pastrami Sandwich which she also liked."

  • "The space was beautiful, I wish I had asked to be seated outside. The food was exquisite. We took a moonlit stroll after dessert. Magical!"

  • "I highly recommend this restaurant. We went for an anniversary dinner and it was the perfect place for a special event. The ambiance was perfect. And the grounds arw gorgeous. It was a perfect combo of sight and taste."

  • "Food and service was very good and the unusual decor was charming and interesting. Unfortunately our meal was disrupted by a screaming toddler."

  • "Great for a romantic dinner with great patio seating with excellent french food..The grounds and the restaurant were breathtaking and romantic. Service was excellent and food was superb.. I had the Kale salad, cheese platter and the veal.. Expensive but worth it."

  • "Rat's is always terrific - from cocktails to dessert - so it was our clear choice for our anniversary dinner. The food, drinks and service were top-notch, as usual. Thanks for a lovely evening!"

  • "Good place to eat when visiting the Grounds for Sculpture. Great space. Attentive service. Food hit and miss considering the hype from the wait staff. Flank steak sandwich special was served cold on soggy bread. Salads were great."

  • "Had a wonderful time service was outstanding for such a busy restaurant didn't rush us at all and thoroughly enjoyed it. Tried the burger and felt it was good not great, someone had the mussels and loved them and the chicken provencal was average. I think salads look the best of everything we saw come out of the kitchen. Dinner may be much better so will go back to try."

  • "While the grounds are wonderful the service we received was very slow and poor. The wine we ordered from the menu was not available and the waiter just brought out the next vintage year without a notice. The wine was too warm also. Transitions between courses was poorly managed and getting the bill at the end took much too long."

  • "We had another wonderful dinner at Rats last night! The appetizers and desserts were fabulous, however, the entrees were tasty but somewhat ordinary. We had asked for a table with a view, but the only thing they could offer us was an outside table that was big enough for 8 people. We will definitely be back, probably for the Valentines Buffet, which was spectacular last year!"

  • "My wife and I had lunch a few times at Rats, we are repeat customers as we always like the experience. Servers are great, great environment, food is great. No complaints what so ever."

  • "Although the atmosphere is unquestionably special, the food and service on this visit were below what i have experienced before at Rats and what one would expect from this establisment. I would suggest avoiding the Mezze appetizer, which is more akin to a party tray than fit for an individual, and the bouilliabaise main course, which was way too salty."

  • "My wife and I had a date while the kids were in camp. Fabulous time."

  • "Met a friend here for lunch. Convenient location midway between our locations. Service and food excellent. I had chopped salad with crispy shrimp-outstanding. We split the warm chocolate cake for dessert-also excellent. The specialty non-alcoholic drink was tasty. View of Grounds for Sculpture is an added attraction."

  • "This is a beautiful restaurant at a great place. So why was it so lacking? I had a panzanella salad for lunch; it was mostly bread. Two halves of a cherry tomato on the plate, that was all of the tomato. I was thinking that they had run out of the salad and just gave me what was in the bottom of the bowl. The nicoise was also disappointing. My friend asked for rare tuna. Our server said it was already prepared so rare was not an option. Turned out to be canned or bottled tuna. Why did he not say that? He should have. Pastrami sandwich was very heavy on bread."

  • "Decided to combine touring the wonderful grounds with a fine lunch experience. The service was great, and the atmosphere in the dining area was very positive. The menu had a wide range of choices, and the meal was both tasty and pleasing to view."

  • "we hadnt been back for years because we moved out of the area. took my sister and husband for her birthday . the grounds were even BETTER than we remembered and our lunch was good. your wait staff is exceptional -the waitress overheard us speak about a birthday and brought my sister alittle dessert w/happy birthday in chocolate. NICE TOUCH!! well be back to try an event in the future. my only disappointment was that your lovely museum qualilty store was closed and you only had a touristy shop in the reception area. Are you not going to offer an upscale shop anymore? again it was a FREAT day at the gardens!! L. Eisen"

  • " I had never had a dinner reservation until Friday June 27th. What a wonderful dining experience. It was our anniversary so the romantic factor was important. We received special attention at the table where we were sat...and then a recommendation to try the tasting menu was well worth it. We also had the wine pairings to go along with the exceptional dinner courses. Then at the end we had a dessert that had a special message written on the plate...so if you do want to get a little extra attention it is worth mentioning when you make your reservation. Grounds for Sculpture is a treasure to us...and now we have added Rat's as a special place to dine too. Hope to visit many times. Nick and Jane Spadafino"

  • "Nice menu, a bit expensive, but expected. The service was "spotty." For the price, I don't think you should have to ask for a spoon for your soup, nor more iced tea, or water when the glass is empty."

  • "it was a wonderful start the cheeses the walk through the gardens and than an hour and a half with the waiter saying this is a dining experience...no this was a lack of putting the food order in. The manager Mr. Hallmark was gracious and honest about the lack of service. We were married at Rats-have had many evenings there that were enjoyable but this was a nightmare as we missed being able to have desert and as planned in advance to celebrate our son's birthday. It was a huge disappointment. The table next to us had a complete meal while we sat and waited and i mentioned to the waiter it was taking to long...my dinner (bouballabaise) came out overcooked and was dreadful. I am sad to think Rats has lost its magic and service....."

  • "This is a special dining experience involving the food, service, atmosphere, and the Grounds. For health reasons we are being careful (necessary to be low fat) with certain foods and cooking methods and they were able to accommodate."

  • "The food was good and so was the ambiance. The server was helpful and explained the menu and food selections very well. However I would not rate the seating arrangement very high - specifically, the sofa seating. I think the cushioning should be changed. I found it very uncomfortable to sit on the sofa seats."

  • "Overall Rats is a very good place to eat. However, the night we were there (Thursday), the bar was jammed and the service was very poor. We had an early reservation in the dinning room which was the only one available, yet there were plenty of tables open throughout the dining room upstairs and down - seems they discriminate against Open Table guests. The dinner we had was excellent - perfectly prepared and well presented. The waiter, however, had to have us repeat our orders a couple of times, and then he brought the wrong wine. The desert we had (pineapple upside down cake with mascarpone ice cream) was horrible - very dry and the thinnest slice of pineapple I've ever seen. Certainly not worth the time, money or calories."

  • "The restaurant is lovely - just like a French chateau. The food was very good. I think I would have liked a better selection for lunch. However, the food we ordered was very good."

  • "My husband and I recently had a fantastic lunch experience at Rats! We are already recommending Rats highly! Our waiter Angelo was tremendous. Thank you."

  • "The atmosphere is a combination of whimsical and exotic. The outdoor dinning overlooked the pond and Monet Bridge. Just lovely to enjoy a casual meal. Lunch menu had variety and reasonable. We enjoyed the Mezza appetizer, sharing with a party of six. It was both ample and delicious. The drink menu offered a fun list. We tried several choices and found them delicious. Salads and burgers were delicious. Best of all was the service. We were never hurried and offered ample time to just relax, converse and enjoy the atmosphere. We ate in the bar dinning room, seating was comfortable and there was even a Turkish cozy cushioned floor setting for anyone who enjoyed that style."

  • "Rats Restaurant at Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton NJ was a lovely place for a good meal among beautiful art in a bucolic setting. There was a good choice of healthful, fresh food, great for those who want to keep their bodies healthy. The setting is good for keeping the mind healthy, too, beside a pond full of koi and a lovely piece of sculpture. The price was perfect for lunch. We have already made plans to return as it will be so different in the changing seasons."

  • "The food was very dissappointing. had the Mushroom Flambe as an appetizer and it was very tough to eat and needed seasonign of some sort. Tasteless. entee had Rack of Lamb and again was very tasteless. The apetizer and entree were so bad that I did not even conisder dessert. I had recommeneded this to my group and while the serivce and ambience are great the food was very disappointing."

  • "The whole place is whimsical in a formal and attentive way. Food is very good. But stay away from the house (Rats) white wine! Make sure you have the time to walk the grounds (Grounds for Sculpture). Fun adventure for everyone!"

  • "The ambience cannot be beat. The service staff is attentive and considerate and do an excellent job of making you feel comfortable and pampered. The food presentation is outstanding and overall one feel like a pampered and welcome guest."

  • "Food was fantastic and the staff was delightful. They even went out of their way when we ordered dessert. Leaving a special message on the plate written in chocolate for my father's first visit."

  • "Rats is part of the experience at Grounds for Sculpture. Food was outstanding with wonderful surroundings. Because of the heat, we sat inside for lunch and found it bit noisy. The outside diners showed more reverence for the surroundings. If we did not live so far away, Rats would become a favorite."
