  • "The Lunello family of restaurants assure their customers that there is attention to detail, quality food which is not prepackaged, and decent wine selections and informed wait staff to help with pairings. We had scallops, grass-fed sirloin, lamb osso bucco, and spaghetti, with one of the daily special salads and oysters appetizers. All items were prepared properly - not overcooked. The coffee makes our top 10 list. Staff is cordial & attentive. "

  • "Our whole family had dinner at the Rare Steakhouse for a birthday celebration. We had the octopus with marinara sauce for appetizer, it was surprisingly good. I had the 12oz prime steak medium rare and it was perfect with a side order of Broccoli Rabe. My bro had the Veal chop which he demonstrated how good it was by picking up the bone to finish what was left. Overall good food, but as the place got busy, we had to look for our waiter and flag him down a couple of times. other than that it was a very good dinner for all of us."

  • "This was our first time dining at Rare, and would definitely come back. We ordered the porterhouse steak for two which was cooked to perfection. The sides were also very good, we recommend the truffle fries. Dessert was OK, nothing special (cheesecake). Service was excellent."

  • "This was my second visit to Rare. The house made bacon is not to be missed. We ordered it over a salad and shared it at the table. The server was gracious enough to split it into 3 portions before it reached our table. I ordered the grass feed sirloin which was cooked perfectly medium rare as ordered. Super tender, lots of flavor. My friends ordered the filet mignon and the cowboy ribeye. Both were outstanding. We shared a few sides: the whipped potatoes, asparagus & the truffle fries. The whipped potatoes with creme fraiche was my favorite. I would go back in a heartbeat the next time I am looking for a steak."

  • "For a "steak house" this place really left much to be desired. If you suggest to have it prepared rare/med rare why were both our steaks well done? A $32 piece of meat charred? No thanks. I will say our waiter was very nice and accommodating however when you're calling yourself a steak restaurant I'd learn how to cook A steak correctly. Not a place I would ever go again."

  • "Great food BUT appetizers came with dinner..We arrived at 725 for a 730 reservation and we were not seated until 8...Waiter took about 5-10 minutes to come over...Brought drinks and one appetizers right away BUT waited about 45 minutes to an hour for appetizers and when asked they were brought out with dinner. Overall the food is great!"

  • "Not only was the food amazing but the service was outstanding. From the time we arrived to the moment we got up to leave, the staff was courteous and pleasant each step of the way. We were a table of two in a sea of large groups and we were not lost in the noise and needs of the larger tables. The food was excellent and if I could have I would have ordered seconds. I would highly recommended this restaurant to everyone and anyone who asked."

  • "My wife and I went to Rare for a belated Valentine's Day dinner and we were quickly seated and served. The manager and chef made their rounds asking about our meal when it was brought out. The wait staff made sure we had everything we needed and were close by when I needed more sides. The steak was cooked just right for both my wife and I. Dessert was an extra treat and my wife was able to take some home to enjoy the following day. I would recommend Rare to anyone and will definitely go there again."

  • "We had dinner at Rare last week. The food was first rate - Manhattan quality steakhouse beef. My wife had the 28 oz Cowboy cut rib steak -- nicely marbled, flavorful. I had the 10 oz filet with the blue chees and portobello mushroom crust - well seasoned, properly cooked, great flavor. We started with a crab cake that was all crab, although the horseradish tarter sauce could have used more zing. Sides were some excellent brussels sprouts with bacon and fries drizzled with truffle oil. All in all an excellent meal, well priced, and a real gem in the Wayne/Clifton/Montclair/Caldwell area. Our only issue was the bar - martinis served in glasses had just come from the dishwasher and were warm, not chilled as they should be."

The steaks were over cooked. Dessert was unimaginative. It was a sundae with a hodgepodge of toppings. Won't be going back."

  • "Went to rare for our Valentine's day dinner with my husband. We did try to order the Steak but was told if we want it cooked to well done it might not come out as we expected since it is sliced thin... so we opted for the halibut and snapper which did not disappoint us. The noise level is moderate...not really amiable for romantic dining because the tables are so close to each other that you can hear the conversation of the people next to you. For dessert, we ordered the gelato and the red velvet gelato was out of this world..for me anyway. my husband had the chocolate which was to his liking. All in all..it was a great night out..."

  • "When we first got there, the valet (who used to park our car) told us where to park our car....on a cold winter night! We used to frequent this restaurant but haven't been in a while. The menu didn't seem as exciting as it used to be (it might have been the same as the past but I was still upset about the parking) but the food was still good. And last, the waiter "up sold" us on sides because "the sides that come with the entree aren't substantial"...they were! I prefer honesty. We will return to the restaurant because it is satisfactory and well located but hope to see a return to the upscale product we were used to, including valet service on cold Winter nights....not just Spring to Fall."

  • "It's been a year since I have been to Rare, I remember because I was very pregnant on valentines day. We returned with baby in tow and found the same great service but a smaller menu. I wish they would just put the Osso Bucco on the menu and not just have it on random days. The only thing I found odd was the crowd, it reminded me of the real housewives of nj wannabes. And please bring back the original desserts! I find the dessert cart to be so lackluster, sad and not so appetizing."

  • "Second visit to Rare, food is very good. Restaurant was full and service staff were somewhat overwhelmed, noise was very significant - the decor is wood/flat walls etc so there is no noise insulation. That's probably why the waiter misheard my order and brought a veal rib instead of a rib eye as ordered. Half the table was cleared then it was a while before the rest was cleared, I think there's slightly less staff than needed. Food is excellent, wine list is excellent. If noise deadening could happen and a little more attention on staffing this would be a great restaurant."

  • "I have been to this restaurant a few times .When we arrived the parking attendent said there was no Valet parking that night.Cold icy night had to walk from parking lot.Second complaint they always do is take you to the table and before anyone asks if you want drink or wine they put Menus on table in front with no explanation of specials."

  • "Always a very good meal! Did not care for my server this time. Attentive but lacked personality. Five in our party ......one steak was under cooked and didn't want to send it back. Veal chop was a little tough. Rack of lamb excellent but has gotten smaller. I'm being very picky but for an upscale restaurant, I think you are entitled. Overall, still excellent food and am going back in 2 weeks. BTW, happy hour drinks are the best deal in town! Manager/maitre'D is the best!!! Really wants you to have a fabulous dining experience!"

  • "OK, I know the word transcendent does not apply to food but I am speechless at how delicious the meal at Rare was. I ordered the filet - medium with the Portobello mushroom / blue cheese glaze and was in heaven! I had to close my eyes to eat this meal because - I didn't want anything to distract me from enjoying every bit of flavor. Hands down the best steak I have ever had! EVER!!! Rare has set the bar for all future meals...I will return with an appetite and more people to share this experience with. Simply perfect."

  • "Overall, my feedback is good. We had 4 adults and 1 child in our party. Steaks and fish were cooked perfectly, and my niece finished her pasta without complaint. Even the drinks were perfectly mixed. Now, here's the negative......the place is extremely loud, which was made even worse by the others who brought their kids and grand kids to the restaurant. There wasn't enough coverage since the place was packed, and the staffed looked overtaxed. I have to blame the front of house manager for that. Lastly, no substitutions were permitted, which made it particularly difficult to order for a diabetic and a picky child. I would go back, but perhaps not on a holiday."

  • "A mixed bag on New Years Eve. Although had reservation for weeks had to wait 25 minutes to be seated and then was taken to the downstairs dining room. Food , for the most part, was excellent with the exception being a supposedly cold salad served on a hot plate thereby ruining the greens. When brought to the attention of our waitress she whisked the plate away without a word and made no effort to see if another salad, or anything for that matter, might be desired. It was evident throughout the meal that she would rather have been elsewhere that night."

  • "All the lobster bisque tasted like was spice and salt. It was so spicy I was sweating. I usually love spice when I order food I expect to be spicy, lobster bisque is not one of them. If the soup had any flavor I would not be able to describe it. For $12 I want to be able to taste my soup. The chilled seafood was served in a large martini glass, it was very good however very expensive considering the quantity of food. Our steaks and chops were very good and cooked to perfection. Deserts especially the napoleon were excellent and an excellent value. The cost was very high considering other quality restaurants in the area"
