RappahannockThis is easily one of theThis is easily one of the best restaurants in RVA. It should not be missed. The Knefla was delicious. Our server was outstanding. You could tell that incredible care was taken with all steps of the preparation (e.g., even the vinegar was made in-house) and presentation (all of my party's dishes were as photogenic as they were scrumptious). I highly recommend that anyone who appreciates the use of the freshest, in-season (and local) ingredients as well attention to detail should put Rappahannock Oyster Co. near the top of their list for fine dining in a fantastic downtown setting.6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMDelicious and hospitableWe had an odd availability and showed up 5 mins before the kitchen was even open--waitstaff let us sit early, recommended excellent drinks, and told us about the menu. Food was really, truly delicious--we ended up getting a second dozen raw oysters they were SO good. Salad was fantastic and dessert a sweet ending to a great meal. Be back next time I'm in town!6/11/2013 12:00:00 AMOysters about the best I've had!Read earlier reviews which seemed to focus on too-small portions, and occasional poor service. Didn't find that at all. Our ladies couldn't even finish their scallop dishes, but loved them. I thoroughly enjoyed a sampler of three types of oysters
and found the Rappahannocks outstanding. Very noisy( we arrived before the after-work financial district bar scene had died down, and it was clearly a "happening" kind of place), we found our waitress lovely , attentive, and very knowledgeable.6/11/2013 12:00:00 AMAnother excellent visitThird time here and just as great as the first two visits. Food and service are top notch and consistent.6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMWe went there for late lunchWe went there for late lunch during the week and it was pretty empty. The food was very good. The baked oysters were delicious!6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMHome RunThey get it!!! Everything was prefect. I can't wait to get back.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMInventive Seafood MenuCraving seafood, we decided to try Rappahannock. Initially, we were somewhat bewildered by the choices, but the server expertly answered our questions. The dishes that we chose were excellent.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMBest Catch!Great seafood and shelfish with ambitious and successful efforts by the chef(s) to produce novel combinations of fresh seafood and local greens and vegetables. Will be back!6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMRappahannock Date NightOverall this was a great experience. The noise level was very high and detracted somewhat. Food was excellent. We both thought that for the prices there could be a little more portions. The bar looked inviting and friendly.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMThe oysters were excellent! The oysters were excellent! The main meals were good, but the appetizers oysters were the highlight of our meal. Next time, I'll order the oysters and pearls appetizer all to myself along with a salad for my meal.6/5/2013 12:00:00 AMImaginative!Imaginative coupling of entrees and sides that have been well prepared. A bit overpriced compared to comparable restaurants, especially considering the small size of the portions.5/30/2013 12:00:00 AMOur dinner was delicious. Our dinner was delicious. The scallops and crab cakes were cooked perfectly. Not a good place for kids or people who do not like seafood.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMDining on Grace StreetWe have the list of recently reviewed restaurants from the Times Dispatch and decided to expand our repertoire. This will definitely be on our return places, although I probably will not have the octopus appetizer again. It really needed something to kick it up a notch and wasabi sauce might have done the trick. We had the grilled mahi mahi, which was great, and smoked trout. Portions were reasonable, and price was average.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMFun at the BarWe were supposed to sit at a table but opted for the bar so we could watch the oyster shucking. Fantastic service at the bar! Raw oysters are great but expensive at $2 a piece. Cocktails are delicious!! Food was very good except a few of our scallops were burnt and very bitter from the grill singe marks. Overall very good though.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMGood eats for those who knowThose who appreciate oysters and understand subtle differences will love Rappahannock. This century-old Croxton oyster family knows good oysters, raises them, and takes pride in presenting them. Has the feel of a place that has been around forever and already is willing awards. Menu is (something I appreciate) but with plenty of creative choices.Knowledgable staff. "Old Salts" from their own beds on half shell were a rare treat -- cold, tasty. salty and the right size -- as were the oysters in the half shell with trout caviar --"Oysters and Pearls." My seafood stew --"bourride" -- was topped with a crust of good bread and a poached egg. Scallops were excellent. Dessert, a citrus panna cotta.-- perfect for ending a seafood meal.5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMPerfect! My husband and I chose to make a reservation at Rappahannock after a friend told us about their experience. We are so happy we did! The service was wonderful, and the food delicious. We will be back!5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMNice going away night outWe took a team member out to dinner. The oysters were very good. The portions were just right. The menu is 90% seafood so be prepared for that. The noise level was not a problem even though the place was full and many groups of 6+.5/22/2013 12:00:00 AMWow MealMy husband and I went to Rappahannock for our anniversary. It seems that every time I take him to a restaurant that I think is great, he has a bad experience. Not this time! By the end of our meal, I thought he was going to lick the plate! He proclaimed it a "Wow Meal!"5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat experiment for seafoodA different experience for unique dishes and mix of flavors. Good salad, appetizer and main dish. Even had a gluteen free lager beer for my wheat intolerance.5/21/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Food & ServiceGreat food and service. Servers are very knowledgeable, attentive, but not overbearing. For Saturday night dinner, it is way to noisy. Don't mind vibrant and energetic places, but concrete floor and no soundproofing makes for having to repeat everything twice and to scream at our table. Otherwise the food was fantastic. I will be back to try more on the menu.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMAlthough the food was good,Although the food was good, the menu was very limiting.
The desserts were fabulous.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat little spotWe went for Mother's Day, and every dish was a delightful surprise. Their wine list was very reasonable, and the food was much more affordable than the menu reflected.
Strongly recommend the salmon trout with beats, quail egg and caviar.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMNice restaurant, good foodThis was my first time here, but I was a little surprised that there was room for Mother's day dinner. Their staff was very friendly and accommodating for our toddler. The atmosphere was a little loud, but I thought it was good since we had a toddler. I've never had Rappahannock oysters before, which seemed a little small, but they were excellent tasting, especially with trout eggs in it. My wife had grilled shrimp in mole sauce and I had their salad with grilled shrimp. It was nice seeing fresh shrimp with their head and tails on them, because the shrimp seemed juicier and loaded with flavor. It would have been an even better if they had complimentary bread, but overall it was still a good experience. I would go here again!5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMDon't go with kids- they haveDon't go with kids- they have NOTHING kid friendly.
Don't go with a big group- its hard to hear conversation.
Portion sizes are smaller, so order a salad.
EXCELLENT food, though! You will not be disappointed!5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMGood SeafoodThe food was excellent. The crowd tended toward youngish, but there were older people there as well. It was loud. Reservations are needed a couple of weeks in advance for a table, but there always seemed to be some seats available at the bar.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMAll you need is sand and wavesLook and feel is very beachy. Nice array of seafood and some options for those who aren't big on fish or shellfish. Good wine choices to include Prosecco. Terrific to find a place that serves lunch up to 3:00 during the week. Had a great tuna melt with fresh tuna and salad side ... really yummy!5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMOFF THE RADARA great find for those who want something a little different. Well-worth the trip downtown.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMPotent drinks from the barPotent drinks from the bar equal a good after work stop. Food and service was excellent! I plan on going back. The noise level was loud. Busy during the weekends, best to go during the week.4/30/2013 12:00:00 AMWHAT A FIND!THE LOCATION WAS GOOD THE FOOD WAS REALLY REALLY GREAT ALL 4 OF US HAD SOMETHING DIFFERANT AND WILL TASTED EACH OTHER DINNER AND WE ALL SAID THE SAME THING WE HAVE TO COME BACK AND TRY SOME THING DIFFERANT. EVERY THING WAS MADE FRESH THE SEA FOOD, I HAD THE PORK BELLIES IS WAS OUTRAGOUS, TENDER JUST MELTED IN MY MOUTH, PAN FRIED GROUPER FLAKEY AND JUST SO..... IT WAS ALL GOOD. THE DRINKS A GREAT BEER SELECTION AND WINE SELECTION. WE ALL HAD LOTS OF FUN. WE ALL HAD A GREAT TIME.4/30/2013 12:00:00 AMA great addition to the downtownA great addition to the downtown Richmond area - especially for the Carpenter theater4/28/2013 12:00:00 AMeveryone seems to complaineveryone seems to complain about the noise, but we went between brunch and dinner on a sunday and it was great. by the time we were leaving, it was getting crowded and noisy. all the food was great. good instruction on the oysters. the shrimp and the crab cake were hits. the lamb and clams dish was good, if a bit salty.4/28/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful, wonderful new additionWonderful, wonderful new addition to the Richmond food scene. The interior is hip, yet rustic and the bar is large and filled with the attractive, young urbanites every bar needs to bring in to generate hype.4/28/2013 12:00:00 AMMy husband and I were pleasantlyMy husband and I were pleasantly surprised with Rappahannock. The oysters were the freshest we'vevhad in Virginia. And you just can't go wrong with processoco on tap! Try the asparagus salad, it was amazing!4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was my first time atThis was my first time at Rappahannock, and it definitely warrants many repeat trips! The food was all outstanding, the wine (a French sauvignon blanc) was excellent, and the baked oysters were divine. I can't eat raw oysters, and I've never found any "cooked" versions so delicious. Terrific pre-opera dinner!4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was excellent. ExpectedFood was excellent. Expected such from oysters, but was delighted with the smoked chicken entrée.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMI understand that the noiseI understand that the noise level is part of Rappahannock's ambience, but it is too loud for my taste. The food, on the other hand, is outstanding, so I'll probably go back again.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent evening out! HighlyExcellent evening out! Highly recommend a signature cocktail to start - the mixologist on staff was great and the concoctions creative and delicious. The raw bar and dinner menu was a terrific read - hard to narrow down what to order - and our waitress was well informed in answering our questions. And, of course, the entrees were visually pleasing and awesome. Scallops right off the boat and to the restaurant - outstanding! We shall return for lunch or another evening out...perhaps at the bar (shoulder to shoulder oyster slurping, AND no TVs).4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMLoved loved the food. OnLoved loved the food. On eof the best dinners I've had in Richmond. Loud, why not cover up some concrete and make it a little more quiet4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMSunday dinner pleaser! Our Sunday dinner was delicious! We tried several dishes, starting with raw oysters, oyster stew, asparagus salad, steamed clams, & the field greens salad. We then moved to our entrees, crab cakes, lamb burger, and rockfish, which were amazing. We finished off with the apple cobbler and homemade ice cream & the panna cotta. Each dish was prepared splendidly and the tastes were varied and unique. I highly recommend Rappahannock!4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMI have been looking for aI have been looking for a great raw bar for so time. My daughter and I went the for Sunday Brunch. The oysters were awesome! I had invested in a Virginia co-op program called "Oysters for Life"the week before where they will deliver 2 dozen oysters to my home for the next 10 years, and I found that they supply this restaurant as well. Wow! I struck the same oyster vein!4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMCool, fun atmosphere and great foodI haven't had a chance to visit Merroir, so was excited to try Rappahannock. Pretty much lived up to everything I've heard - though I was surprised at how much of the place the bar takes up. That said - it works. The place maintained a fun vibe all night. We sat at the bar until our table was ready - great bar staff served up some creative cocktails.
After we were seated our waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. We had all four types of oysters they were serving, a "salmon" trout app, asparagus salad and pan fried tile fish. All were excellently prepared and delicious - I'd recommend any of them.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMWhen all ages come throughWhen all ages come through the door you know it's a happening place!
Our first (of many, we expect)visit to Rappahannock was not without the rave reviews we had heard and read. Best ever salad, one of our party of four said about the asparagus salad. Two others raved about their oyster selections, and the grilled shrimp. Portions are so well planned that we even had room for dessert. One word of advice from a husband who was still a little hungry at the end: Be sure to order an appetizer or salad (which the rest of us did) because his entree of baked oysters did not go quite far enough for his appetite! We'll be back so he can get it right!4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMI had a great experience atI had a great experience at Rappahannock! My entree was one of the best I have had in RIchmond in quite sometime. The oysters were very tasty but a little on the pricey side. Our service was very prompt except our initial drink order and the restaurant was very loud. Other than those minor things, I would highly recommend Rappahannock and look forward to going back!4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMour first experience at Rappahannocour first experience at Rappahannock was unbelievable! The food was absolutely outstanding. We can hardly wait to go back!!4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was my second time atThis was my second time at Rappahannock's. Both were enjoyable. We enjoyed a dozen oysters on the half shell - nicely displayed and well explained. I had the panned fish of the day, which was halibut, and my son had the scallop entre'. We both had the pale ale. Great time!Thanks.4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat choice for trying riverGreat choice for trying river oysters. Halibut on special was amazing! You will smell like you were fireside after leaving since they use a wood burning for cooking, but well worth it for the authentic and great food!4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMsuper tasty foods, glutensuper tasty foods, gluten friendly, fun atmosphere, knowledgable staff and bartenders.4/10/2013 12:00:00 AMThe oysters were incredible! The oysters were incredible! My husband had the raw oysters (2 of each type) and I tried the baked oysters. We both very happy and enjoyed them with a bottle of Muscadet. For dinner we tried the Clams and the Fish of the Day which was Black Sea Bass and they were also great. We had the Apple Cobbler for dessert. Great dinner. We will go back4/4/2013 12:00:00 AM
