Diner Reviews
  • "This was my first time trying Burmese food. Went to this restaurant on a whim and was very surprised as to how amazing the dishes were. The restaurant is on the smaller side, but other than that I love the atmosphere and vibe of the place. I ordered the tea leaf salad, salt and pepper calamari, basil chili beef, and coconut rice. Everything was delicious and the flavors were very unique! Our waitress was incredibly nice. Good experience. If you're up for trying a new cuisine, I highly recommend this spot."

  • "Some things on the menu are amazing (such as the mango salad) but others are a real let down (crispy salmon, for example). We have been back 3 or 4 times and each time have had about 2/3 great items and 1/3 really unimpressive items. If you are willing to experiment to find the good stuff it is amazing. It seems like a place with these prices would raise the bar on all items though."

  • "Our first few visits to RR were excellent. Great food, service and atmosphere. This week I took a visitor there for lunch and everything except the cucumber water and Burma Rice was off. We ordered the Tea Leaf Salad staple which came out over salted and a bit mushy. Our Chicken Burmese Curry was watery and bland with dry white meat chicken pieces which clearly were added to the sauce late rather than having been marinated. Only the Burmese Rice side dish was acceptable. RR is opening a second location in downtown Palo Alto. The kichen seems stretched right now with only one venue."

  • "the food is excellent . however , they serve every dish in very rapid succession. they served us our appetizers. within a minute came the salad and 30 seconds letter our main course. they clearly are trying to get everyone in and out really fast. (coupe next to us was in and out in 30 minutes for several courses.) this is fine for a business lunch but not for a nice dinner."

  • "The food here was incredible! I made a reservation for 8:30 PM for 3, and sure enough we showed up at 8:30 on the dot and our table was ready. All of us in the party thoroughly enjoyed every bite. On top of this, the portion sizes were perfect. It was more than enough food to fill you up, but not over the top gigantic like so many restaurants in America. The thing I disliked about this place was just how packed it was. The tables were so close together and the restaurant at capacity, I was bumped in to by servers and customers every time I turned around. If you're claustrophobic or want to be able to move around, this is NOT the place for you. I could barely get up to go to the restroom."

  • "The food was pretty good, although I felt like there was too much garlic in every dish. It would have been nice if other seasoning was used to pump up the flavors. The tables are a bit close together and the restaurant got very loud which made it hard to talk."

  • "First time at this restaurant and it is good to go early, with a reservation, as it fills up quickly. A friend and I shared the Palata - was not expecting whole pieces of chicken to be eaten with the bread - it was quite delicious. We asked for medium "heat" - it was extremely mild (but flavorful). Next time - hot please!. We also had the tea leaf salad - what a fabulous experience of texture and flavor. Then burmese rice and Kebat chicken - also very flavorful. We both thoroughly enjoyed our dinner along with a nice bottle of wine. Will be back!"

  • "For all the hype, the food is average. The service was great. Food was average, and price was too high. Overall I wont go again. Won't recommend to anyone."

  • "Food was very good. Also unique because there are not too many Burmese restaurants around. Service was excellent too. The only downside at this place is its too crowded - meaning the tables are set too close and so feels a little claustrophobic and crowded."

  • "Packed. Delicious. Spicy or not. Fermented tea leaf salad is a must. Just go. Reserve ahead."

  • "Had a wonderful Burmese salad (mango) and got a sparkler for my birthday. Delish food and quick service."

  • "Though they didn't seat us for a half hour after our reservation time, they sent out a complimentary tea leaf salad and hustled our food through the kitchen. It's certainly loud in there, though, even on a Tuesday night! Incredible food. Must try."

  • "The Burmese tea salad lived up to expectation and the roti palatta was very good. Entrees were a bit disappointing. Service was good but slow as it was very, very busy. This was at 7:00 pm. Next time I would try to go for an earlier dinner."

  • "This was recommended by a local who said that while we were visiting, we had to check it out. We weren't disappointed. Food was fast and yummy."

  • "This was the best of the four or five times we have eaten here, but one element was a bit annoying. We were still working on the appetizer (the ever popular tea-leaf salad) when the main dishes started arriving. In fact the appetizer came before the wine. Perhaps in a Burmese restaurant that's not a problem, except that we didn't have enough room on the table to put everything without shuffling dishes around. Service seemed super-efficient by a degree or two more than necessary."

  • "Must try the tea leaf salad! The Yellow Tofu Red currybis to die for.. all these to be eaten with burmese rice as originally expected!"

  • "The food was delicious, especially the garlic noodles with braised duck! The fish (I believe it was called mango asai) was succulent, the light sour flavor of mango perfectly cutting the fish. The service was fabulous!"

  • "I've been here on a first date, on a girls' night, and a work-team outing :) It's been great for all three! Make reservations in advance because tables get taken up real quick. Love the mango chicken, tea leaf salad, and palata! They had fresh coconut water (in the coconut!), which is quite awesome :) They are nice enough to give it with the spoon so you can get the flesh too :D Did not like the fried coconut pudding dessert so much."

  • "I love the green tea leaf salad and the Samusa soup. So many healthy things for vegetarians here!"

  • "Tea leaf salad and garlic noodles were both very good- best I've ever had. Eggplant curry and veggie curry both very bland. Sweet coconut rice dessert...great everywhere, isn't it?!"

  • "I would recommend the trek to San Carlos over Palo Alto simply because of the servers. It's the same great food,--and really the Tea Leaf Salad can't be beat! -- but the servers were constantly intrusive and kept trying to up-sell and over-sell the food. We ordered a wine, and were immediately told we should purchase a more expensive (that is to say THE most expensive) one on the menu. We ordered one bowl of rice, because not all of us were going to eat rice, and were told to order 2 more...it became annoying. Our plates were cleared before we even finished eating! The same thing happened to the party next to us. Someone needs to retrain the staff and insert a little friendliness into the place."

  • "We have been eating at this place for years and have never tried the coconut the pudding. Shame on us, it was not what we expected but it was delicious. Especially after a light lunch sharing our staple 3 dishes, Northern Fried Tofu, Tea Leaf Salad (no protein) A MUST HAVE, and pea leaf"

  • "The food was very good and our waitress made good recommendations. However, we felt like the staff was constantly pushing us to leave."

  • "Good spot for hungry people. Food is delicious: green mango salad, calamari, shrimp dish. Pumpkin port (pork tasty; pumpkin tasteless). seemingly unlimited menu. Dishes offered spicy, medium or mild. We sat near front with window open on sidewalk and still had to shout across the table to be heard. It must be impossible to hear in back of the restaurant. Busy scene. Attractive young people in and out, crowded tables, people waiting outside for a table."

  • "Drinks were hit or miss, mine was not well mixed. Food was fantastic though."

  • "Good food, but way too noisy and tables are way too close to each other. Corkage at $25 for a restaurant of this caliber is a definite turn off. Tea leaf salad is way over rated and salty. The mango salad is a far better option with more suttle flavors. The palata is basically an Indian paratha with a coconut chicken curry, that is a tease more than a curry dish that you can enjoy with the palata & it's not cheap at $11. The restaurant needs to revisit the qty of curry they give with the palata. Catfish lacked the flavors, but garlic eggplant was flavorful. Fried banana dessert was as good as it can get. Two thumbs up to the servers."

  • "Fried tofu (the first listed) was astounding. The sesame beef was fantastic. Could pass on the Rangoon noodle. Mango chicken was good not great. Helpful server re nut allergy. Tasty cucumber tap water. Will be back."

  • "What a find! We loved everything we tried, especially the tea leaf salad...really a first class meal. It was our first time, and our server was very knowledgable and helpful, and right on top of the pacing. Our only quibble was in how loud it was...very hard to hear the conversation at the table. Probably better to go at a quieter time of day instead of prime evening time."

  • "The guy at the door, checking computer reservations, was not very friendly and the hostess who took us to our table was unbelievably surly. Did not crack a smile at anything. Yikes! If you don't like people, don't go in the hospitality business. However our waitress made up for it working nonstop and very efficiently in the most cramped space imaginable, and yet she kept on smiling (Kelsey, I think?) Good decor, great busboys and servers. Drink (Singapore sling) was watery. Big drawback: the tables are packed like sardines and the noise is deafening, so you end up just wanting to rush through your delicious food and wanting to leave. For that reason, we are not sure we would go back."

  • "love this place! even though it is not part of Burmese Superstar in SF , they have the same menu...can't get enough of the Chili lime Lamb and the tea salad...every thing was so great..introduced my niece and nephew to this place....they are hooked on it too..."

  • "What a fun restaurant in Palo Alto that is always busy with hungry guests. For those who aren't familiar with Burmese food, it is reminiscent of many Thai dishes (herbs like mint and basil) but with a somewhat Indian/Chinese flair. The food is absolutely delicious and service is typically quite good. Word to the wise, the dishes can be made to any "spice" level desired, but they are generally pretty safe up until the "very spicy" level, where the kitchen likely begins to feel a challenge. Those looking to clear their nostrils should try the Basil Chili Beef spiced to the nines."

  • "It was packed when I went last on Friday evening, but food and service remained outstanding. Staff communicated well with each other so very smooth service even though every table was busy and turn around was fast. Food is healthy and something different. Love this local gem."

  • "Every time that my wife and I eat at this place it never disappoints. You have to try the tea leaf salad and pea leaves (if in season)"

  • "This is a wonderful restaurant and dining experience all the way around. The food could be considered by many to be "world class" and it is definitely among the most unique and compelling dining experiences to be had in the area. There is a reason why it isn't easy to book a table at this wonderful place; more and more people are discovering that this is truly a "food paradise" in Palo Alto. I have taken a number of "uninitiated" guests to Rangoon Ruby, including a variety of skeptical people ("But we don't like 'Asian' food;" "What does 'Burmese" food even taste like?") ABSOLUTELY to a person EVERY guest that I have taken to this five star restaurant has raved about it afterwards. EVERY guest. GO FOR IT. You will be glad that you did."

  • "We have had lunch there several times and are never disappointed! It will take us a while to try everything on the menu, but we are determined to make it! The San Carlos location is our next destination for dinner. "
