Diner Reviews
  • "This was the first time I had Burmese cuisine and had heard good reviews about it. It did not disappoint. The food was amazing and the service was good too. I particular like the Kebat - Lamb which was pleasantly soft and delicious. The samosa soup was awesome too. Most of the dishes were a cross between Thai and Indian food and went well with my taste."

  • "Every dish we've tried at Rangoon Ruby has been good, starting with their absolutely delicious Tea-Leaf Salad."
    Dined on 4/8/2014
  • "Really liked it the first time when my friend and I went out for a dinner a few months ago and we decided to go again. The wait staff are very professional and are never too far to be hailed and they don't disappear for long periods. The tea leaf salad is absolutely the star of the show in the beginning. We had the Fiery Beef and Salmon Crisp and both of them were cooked really quite well. I'm usually wary of restaurants which have 3-4 page menus but this seems to keep coming out ahead. Keep up the good work guys."

  • "This place has never had a dull menu for me. I went there as a group of 3 and tried the tea leaf salad and the mango salad... both excellent starters; full of flavor from its diverse ingredients. Alternating between the two acted like a palette cleanser for the next bite. My main dish was the Rangoon Noodle, which was just as delicious as the salads but unique; the fusion of the cabbage, chili sauce, cilantro and other fresh ingredients added to the experience."

  • "the salmon dish was small, expensive and overcooked, but beef and noodles were good."

  • "A great restaurant with unusual cuisine. The tea leaf salad is exceptional."

  • "My only complaint is that I received no Open Table points for dining at this restaurant."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "OPEN TABLE: I nor my friends are into "energetic noise level". We prefer to be able to hear each other. We find the "new American thing" of having a noisy restaurant ANNOYING. So when I put "three bars" its meant to be annoying NOT Energetic which y'all think is good. And your recommend this restaurant for, doesn't include something I'd recommend for. Perhaps add an option to write something in. For Rangoon! The food was delicious. Our server was knowledgeable, nice and attentive. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal - even though it was loud."

  • "And the Fiery Tofu and Broccoli in Garlic sauce was good too. But the Eggplant curry was a big disapointment"
    Dined on 3/18/2014
  • "excellent food but was very crowded and we were rushed. server was very capable but was clearly stressed and had zero personality or care as a result. sloppy awkward service."
    Dined on 3/16/2014
  • "RR is a wonderful place to enjoy a wide selection of southern Asian dishes. The server prepared Tea salad at the table is an effective touch, explaining all the ingredients to the diners. The option of "hotness" for the dishes gives diners with differing spice tolerances real choices. The portions are generous and well seasoned. Try it and see!"

  • "Having just traveled to Burma, the food and the atmosphere brought back wonderful memories of the good food we had there, except Rangoon Ruby's is even better. We loved the tea salad--not to be missed. Also the eggplant with shrimp. The service is excellent -- servers on both occasions were stand outs. Twice we tried coming here without a reservation but the wait was too long."
    Dined on 3/6/2014
  • "Everything we had here was delicious. Do not miss the salad and Palati w Lamb. That was likely the best thing we had. The portions were larger than expected for an "upscale" restaurant, so don't over-order, or if you do, be treated to delicious leftovers next day! For those of you in love with Burma Superstar in SF, this place is better, nicer, a bit pricier, but saves a drive to SF not to mention the queue is not 2hrs wait, for which there really is no reason at Burma S."

  • "I thought it was decent food. My qualm was that we arrived at the reservation time and they didn't seat us until almost 15 minutes later (what is the point of a reservation if the table isn't ready?) and our waiter could have been a bit more pleasant."

  • "I've been to Burma and was eager to experience some authentic Burmese cuisine here. The food was tasty but the sauce on the fish, chicken and beef dishes we ordered all seemed the same. In Burma the pace is relaxed. Not in Palo Alto. I felt rushed. The tables are placed so close together that waiters can hardly maneuver without leaning over the tables. There are too many tables in such a small space and that increases the noise well beyond what is comfortable. I think people will come here once to try the food and then opt for other restaurants where you can talk and linger."

  • "Great food. The tea leaf salad is amazing. All dishes are nicely balanced, delicious, and beautifully presented. A bit noisy."

  • "I liked the Tea Leaf salad. Otherwise, so-so. Service was pretty spot on, considering the place was packed. The hostess was very competent and kind. Nice to have table presentation of the salads. But… it was not Wow food. Would I go back? Maybe, but it would have to be because my guests were in love with the place."

  • "My mother-in-law is Burmese and she wholeheartedly approved of the dishes! We order 3 different soups, the tea salad, and a bunch of other chicken and beef dishes. Every one of them were delicious! Even my husband, who's not usually into ethnic foods, liked what he ate. We would definitely come back."

  • "We stumbled across this place a few years ago and it has not disappointed since. We drive from the Fremont area and pay a toll just too eat here. There are so many good eateries down university but this one set back on a cross street is a must go. The Tea leaf salad is delicious, especially when you add the chili paste to it. When in season, you have to get the pea leaf vegetable plate either alone or with the tofu."

  • "Food was very good and came out quickly. But the service otherwise can be improved. They seem a little stressed at lunch and can't seem to accommodate groups (at times) or other things you'd expect during the meal. might have been an off day in this respect."
    Dined on 2/27/2014
  • "Very wide selection of foods, all prepared with imagination and skill. The selection is so large that is can be intimidating. Ask the waiter/waitress for recommendations if in doubt. Reservations for dinner are necessary, unless you are willing to wait quite a while for an opening."
    Dined on 2/28/2014
  • "Food was too salty---wait staff rushed us--tried to remove plates before we were finished ---they are a very popular restaurant and had a line of people waiting to get a table the night we were there for dinner, still the service shouldn't feel rushed."

  • "A group of 4 adults shared dinner . Our experience had excellent food, good wine selection, and the waiter was prompt, polite and made great suggestions. I would for sure return for another meal!!!!"

  • "Food is delicious but the place is overcrowded. They have squeezed too many seats inside. We were seated next to the door and we're cold the entire dinner."
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "Food is excellent - a combination of sorts of Chinese, Thai and Indian in terms of spices. Service was very prompt. Prices are reasonable. Tables are too close together - gives a cramped feel."

  • "Great food and service. Wish there was a another location in East Bay."

  • "Vibrant atmosphere, good food. So much to choose from, need to go back to try them. Many vegetarian options, though pale in comparison to meat dishes. Packed until 8 on a Sunday evening, opens up after. Everyone was friendly. Made the occasion friendly. Loved the birthday candles, will try it sometime!"

  • "A yummy place to go out and share a meal with a friend."

  • "Why did you have to raise the prices? The salmon always tastes old, but the rest of the food was excellent, albeit overpriced."

  • "Excellent ambiance… Food was good, had not had Burmese before. We ordered family style for a group of 10. Enjoyed the Fried Tofu appetizer and Minted Jalapeño Chicken very much."

  • "For over 30 yrs I've dined in Palo Alto but Never heard of this "hidden gem". It's unexpected from the street view that the food, service and experience to be so superb Found this listed on Yelp and wanted to try something different with a group of friends to celebrate my birthday. The server was Outstanding. No one informed him of the occasion, but he sensed it. For appetizers you have to try the Samosas and Lettuce Wraps. Flavor and textures of the foods was perfect. I highly recommend a noodle dish called: Nan Gyi Dok (rice noodle, coconut chicken sauce, with light yellow bean powder, fried onion & hard boiled egg). Coconut juice comes in actual coconut. Bday surprise, large sparkler on top of Mango Ice cream. Will be returning!"

  • "I have been to both Rangoon Ruby restaurants -- Palo Alto and San Carlos. They are both excellent. I highly recommend the chicken, beef or shrimp kebat as an introduction to Burmese food. The staff are very good at describing the heat levels and I have found them consistent. If you want more heat, ask for the extra sauce. The wine choices are very complementary to the food, too."

  • "Everything was very good, lots if flavor. It is very loud and gets very crowded. Make a reservation or you will be waiting in line. If you like Burma Superstar you will like Ruby too! Happy to find Burmese food on the peninsula. Will be trying the new San Carlos location soon!"

  • "Food was good enough, not spectacular, but even 8 on a tuesday night it was way too crammed to enjoy."

  • "I love this place! One of my absolute favorites. If you love Thai or other Asian food, you've got to try this Burmese restaurant."

  • "One of the best restaurants in Palo Alto! Get the tea leaf salad and the spicy ground chicken dish!"

  • "I found Rangoon Ruby on Open Table and thought Burmese food would be interesting to try. We tried the salt & pepper fish, fried tofu, and samosas as appetizers, and they were all delicious and served with sauces that complemented them nicely. Our entrees included pork, lamb, shrimp, chicken and veggies and were all equally delicious. You could order rice a la cart for each entree, but I found that my mixed vegetable curry didn't really need it. We will definitely eat here again. There's a lot on the menu I'd still like to try."

  • "Excellent Burmese food & incredible service; we had two different food allergies in our group and they provided a listing of all menu items we could use - verified with the chefs. Very convenient, very fresh food. The garlic duck noodles are an amazingly tasty dish; their stews are also amazing. I look forward to my next visit!"

  • "We have eaten here maybe 10 times. The service is generally pretty good and the wait people, once they know you, are very sweet and solicitous. There is quite a selection of vegetarian food for me--being a strict eggless vegetarian. And my husband can also get plenty to eat! I don't tolerate hot spicy foods well and they do a good job of accommodating that request."
