I absolutely loved Range! Range takes pride in its unique menu items. This isn't your typical California style menu. The chef uses ingredients that may not be known to the average foodie. Nevertheless, everything was delicious. I recommend the uni, duck wings, and steak!

The taste, presentation, care and quality of the food and drinks is fantastic. The wait staff has consistently been uninterested or tired. This might be because the back room, where the majority of tables are, is too crowded, too loud, and otherwise unpleasant for them as well as the patrons. Once (out of four visits) we had a table in the front, and felt none of that. Don't sit in the back, and you'll be fine. Also, it's great to see a restaurant kitchen that's predominantly (all?) women.

The food was OK- some dishes were good, others were so so. We sent back one of the desserts - I don't think I have ever done that with a dessert. the cocktail of the day was a bust, and we had to buy the bread. $340 for 5 of us, plus tip- definitely wasn't worth it. It was disappointing, to be honest. I will not be back. It wasn't awful, just not worth the cost.

Everything we had was very good and quite rich (in flavor)... so dieters beware. Skip the fresh made bread, and save room for other things. Loved the fish dishes, the main duck course was ok... go with the duck wings. Drinks were good, but we've had same quality cocktails for much less - actually, thats the over all theme here...

It was a less than mediocre meal. Strange combonations of food. Way too much going on - on the plate and soooooooo over salted. Delicious sparkling wine though and the desserts were soooo much better than the entrees/appetizers so YEAH!!! to the pastry chef.

It is difficult to find perfectly cooked fish, really. My dish was amazing! The fish was perfect and the garnish (bacon, zucchini, kale, clams) worked so well. I could have easily consumed two full entrees. It was that good. If you want to eat meat that is well sourced and perfectly cooked, this is your place. Again, I cannot emphasize the point enough - it is hard to cook meat perfectly and this restaurant does just that.

I will agree with the other reviewers that the noise level is significant. There was one large party in the dining room which may have made things worse than with multiple small parties. It was difficult to hear my companion across the table from me. Other than the noise level in the small dining room, I thought the food, drinks, and service were great.

I barely remember the food, though it was good enough. But the noise level in the back room was astounding. The group seated at the table by the entrance were shouting at each other as we walked in. After being seated in the middle of the back wall, we could clearly hear a man's conversation with his date from their cozy corner table some distance away. Was he trying to impress with the thrust of his manly voice? A table of women in the center were having a vocal riot, as if no one else were around. Shouts by other diners trying to be heard only made things worse. When the food is just as good or better at some quieter restaurants, why come to Range? The place used to be a favorite, but the noise, always loud, is now intolerable.

Range got great reviews, but was disappointing. The service was rushed, the place was very noisy, and the food, although tasty, was all in the same color palette, brown. In addition, the portion of fish in my entree would have been appropriate for a tapas bar, but not for a full-service restaurant--way overpriced.

Cocktails - great! Imaginative bartender. Be sure to have one made just for you. Dinner was very good - you have to try the duck wing appetizer. The poached black cod was cooked to perfection. Range features a menu of Californian local, sustainable, organic fare served in delectable small plates, & well composed entrees that perfectly contrast flavors. We shared three appetizer plates: local sardines; the fresh daily soup (ours was a carrot compote made with coconut milk); & a house-favorite, glazed duck wings with pickled chillies. Each plate had a perfect balance of tastes: sweet to savory; light or rich textures. We each had an entree: Local halibut & a vegetarian dish of squash & white beans over ancient grains, then shared the homemade apple, white chocolate tart for dessert. The wine list is inexpensive (full bottles for <$100) mix of Californians, Italians & a smattering of others. We hope to be back on the Range soon.

Read great things but did not think the food was out of this world as some other reviewers have implied. Pricey for what you get, including the drinks. My coffee rubbed pork shoulder was a little on the salty side, albeit very tender. Atmosphere was nice, though tables so close that people can eavesdrop or overhear other conversations, so much so that one group had to give into conversation with the lone man sitting next to them. Server was superb and knowledgable.

We had a lovely meal from an outstanding looking menu. The only course that wasn't 100% what we'd hoped was dessert, which didn't seem quite as stellar as in previous visits. Be forewarned, though, that the room is noisy and would be challenging for older diners to have a conversation.

Of all choices along the Valencia corridor, this one is by far one of the best. And if not the most expensive, it's definitely on the top of the price scale too. It would be hard to walk out for less than $120 for two, even with a split salad and dessert, and one drink per person. That said, this really is amazing food. With a constantly updated menus, we've never been disappointed. The fish dishes (two per night!) are especially exceptional, with layers of complex flavors and textures. Their variation on corn cake desserts (gluten free) have been exceptional every time. Service (or maybe the kitchen) is slightly sluggish, but always professional and friendly. Highly recommended for a celebration or splurge.

We hadn't been to Range in quite a while, and had decided to go back. Our take away from Range is the same. The room is much too loud (our ears were ringing afterwards) and the tables are too close to together. As a result, we found ourselves shouting at each other, and hearing the table next to us shouting at each other too. The food is very good, but the ambiance is a deal killer.

We went in with high expectations, and were a bit disappointed. While the food was good, the menu was limited. In truth not much looked good to us. The service was mediocre, he seemed put off that we wouldn't have a higher tab, as we didn't order drinks or an appetizer. We were very disappointed and my wife commented as we left that we wouldn't be returning. However we did have two other fabulous meals while in San Francisco.

My husband and I were first time diners at Range. When we arrived, we waited about 10 minutes for our table. There were two seats available at the bar so we ordered a drink. The bar tender was a fun, friendly and efficient. When we were seated, our table was in the corner of the dining room. The dining room was packed and the table felt quite crowded. It was loud. We were served right away. Our food was delicious. We choose two different salads for a starter and for the entree we both had the vegetarian option. The food was absolutely delicious. Fresh and bursting with flavor - all served at the perfect temperature. Our server recommended a wine to go with our food - and her recommendation was fabulous.

We took a friend here for a group birthday dinner and ordered practically the whole menu for family style sharing. The craft drinks are terrific and if you want to skip the booze they will make you crafted non-alcoholic treats to drink as well. For starters, the purée of cannellini bean soup was awesome and the egg noodle pasta with manila clams is to die for. Even friends that don't like clams were scraping the plate. Our favorite entree was the poached flounder. Our waitress recommended the rubbed pork shoulder but I thought it was a bit dry. We finished off with a two nice plates of cheese and the chocolate peanut butter mousse cake which was perfectly dense and rich.
